Lessie Barnes

Lessie Dora Barnes, 89, a resident of Winfield for nearly 50 years, died March 20, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Evangelical Free Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and until noon Wednesday.

A memorial has been established with the Evangelical Free Church. Contributions may be made at the church or the funeral home.

Barnes was born March 11, 1910, at Welling, Okla., to Alex and Alice (Murrie) Brantley. She was raised and educated in Oklahoma and moved to Kansas as a young woman.

In 1927 she married Hosea H. Saltz. They lived in Oklahoma and Kansas throughout their marriage. Mr. Saltz preceded her in death.

On Sept. 20, 1948, she married Theodore D. Barnes in Halstead. The couple resided in the Winfield area throughout most of their marriage. Mr. Barnes died in February 1969.

Mrs. Barnes was employed 42 years as a cook for the Brettun Hotel, various Winfield restaurants, and Edgetown Manor and Winfield Rest Haven nursing homes.

She was a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Winfield. Survivors include a son, Kenneth Saltz, Greer, S.C.; a daughter, Leona Reynolds, Winfield; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Roberta Jean Denton, died March 22, 1996, and a son, Harold Saltz, died in 1990.

Norma Means

Norma Means, 97, of 1116 E. Seventh, Winfield, died March 21, 1999, at her home.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

A memorial has been established with the church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Means was born Nov. 2, 1901, in Oxford, to Willard and Alice (Notestine) Brian. She graduated from Derby High School and attended Emporia State Teachers College.

On Sept. 9, 1924, she married Clyde W. Means in Derby. He died Dec. 30, 1979.

She worked as a teacher for schools in Wichita, Derby and Sioux City, Iowa. She and her husband also farmed in the rural Derby area for many years before moving to Winfield in 1960.

She was very active in the church and served as president of many organizations, including the Sunday school class, church circle and the United Presbyterian Women's Club. She also taught Bible class and was an elder in the church. She was also a past president of the garden club.

Survivors include a son, Jack Means, Wichita; five daughters, Nadine Tillotson, Wichita, Joan Gedwillo, Sioux City, Iowa, Beth Weinert, Portland, Ore., Shirley Shelley, Half Moon, Calif., and Judy Franksen, Omaha, Neb.; 26 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

A daughter, Lois Rose Means, preceded her in death.

James Thurber

James R. Thurber, 69, of 1502 E. 12th St. in Winfield, died March 22, 1999 at Bryan LGH Medical Center East in Lincoln, Neb.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Millington Street Baptist Church. The Rev. K.B. Murray will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday and until noon Thursday.

A memorial has been established with Millington Street Baptist Church. Contributions may be made at the church or the funeral home.

Thurber was born July 31, 1929, in Arkansas City, to Roy James and Elsie May (Griffey) Thurber. He was educated in Winfield graduated from Winfield High School in 1947.

He served in the U.S. Army following graduation and began work with the Cowley County Highway Department as a young man. He worked with the highway department 16 years.

Mr. Thurber began employment as a truck driver for Greif Bros. Corporation at Strother Field in October 1966. He had completed over 32 years' service to the company.

On April 10, 1952, he married Doris Frances Lockwood at Ponca City, Okla. They resided in Winfield throughout their marriage. Mrs. Thurber preceded him in death on May 29, 1991.

Mr. Thurber was an active member of Millington Street Baptist Church. In earlier years, he was active in coaching Pop Warner and youth football programs.

Survivors include two sons, Gary Thurber, Belle Plaine, and Mike Thurber, Lincoln, Neb.; a daughter, Michelle Pacheco, Ocoee, Fla.; two brothers, Gene Thurber and Don Thurber, both of Winfield; and five grandchildren.

A son, Terry Thurber, did April 5, 1983.

Blanche Lawson

Services for Blanche (Mounts) Lawson, 80, who died March 19, 1999, were held at 2 p.m. March 23 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Art Hays officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Vocal music included "Amazing Grace" and "Peace in the Valley," performed by Gaye Mackey. Wanda Mackey was the organist.

Casket bearers were Bob, David and Justin Lawson, Mike Lundy, Steven McNutt and Chris Roark.

Memorials have been established with Hospice Inc. and the First Baptist Church in Burden.

Lawrence Lewis

Lawrence Lewis, 83, of Winfield, died March 22, 1999, at Cumbernauld Village.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home until 9 tonight.

A memorial has been established with the Cumbernauld Village Van and Employee Fund. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Lewis was born Oct. 31, 1914, in the Grandview Township area to Fred and Elmira (Sebastian) Lewis. He attended school in the Cowley County area.

On Sept. 22, 1935, he married Ruth Dicken in Floral. She died July 19, 1994.

Lewis farmed in Cowley County while also working as a truck driver for Watson Drilling Co. for 20 years. Following his employment with Watson, he worked in the maintenance department at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center for over 20 years until he retired.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge.

Survivors include two sons, Ken Lewis, Winfield, and Dick Lewis, Ponca City; a daughter, Martha Haselbush, Fredericksburg, Va.; three sisters, Florence Meier and Hazel David, both of Winfield, and Helen Sands, Wichita; 15 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

John McKinley

HUTCHINSON - John Edgar McKinley, 84, longtime resident of Hutchinson, died March 22, 1999, at Hutchinson Hospital.

Private services will be held later.

A memorial has been established with the Delos V. Smith Senior Center. Contributions can be sent to Johnson & Sons Funeral Home, 300 E. 30th, Hutchinson, KS 67502.

McKinley was born Dec. 30, 1914, in Wellington, to John J. and Goldie Valentine (Larmer) McKinley. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army.

He had worked as a theater projectionist in Wellington, Winfield, Arkansas City, Dodge City and Hutchinson. He also helped with lighting at the Kansas State Fair for many years.

McKinley was a member of Grace Episcopal Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, both in Hutchinson.

In June 1965 he married Goldie Renfro in Wichita. She died Oct. 1, 1988.

Survivors include three brothers, Eulos H. McKinley, Parkville, Mo., B.J. McKinley, Winfield, and Burleigh B. McKinley, Phoenix; and two sisters, Ruth Dednah, Marblehead, Mass., and Martha L. Reyes, Miami, Okla.

Oneida Randall

WOODWARD, Okla. - Oneida V. Randall, 68, of Woodward, formerly of Winfield, died March 19, 1999, at her home.

Services were held at 2 p.m. March 22 at Zwanziger Funeral Chapel. James Rucker officiated, and burial was in Elmwood Cemetery.

Randall was born Sept. 6, 1930, in Lee, W.Va., to William Marion and Orpha (Wicker) Spears.

On July 4, 1948, she married James A. Randall in Ravenden Springs, Ark. He died in 1985.

She was a member of the Fifth Street Church of Christ.

Survivors include two daughters, Chyrrl Ann Jones, Oklahoma City, and Carol Lynn Nelson, Charlotte, N.C.; two brothers, Paul Spears and J.R. Spears, both of Ravenden Springs, Ark.; a sister, Ruby Jean Wasley, Woodward; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Tammy Sue Randall, preceded her in death.

Mary Ellen Stoker

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. - Mary Ellen Stoker, 91, of Bartlesville, formerly of Elk Falls, died Aug. 13, 1998, at Jane Phillips Geriatrics Center in Bartlesville.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Elk Falls Cemetery. Lloyd G. Zimmerman will officiate. "Amazing Grace" will be sung.

A memorial has been established with the Audubon Society. Contributions can be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Stoker was born May 22, 1907, in Lawton, Okla., to Ed and Lena (Collins) Nelson. She was raised and educated in Elk Falls. After receiving a bachelor's degree from the University of Kansas, she married Carl E. Stoker. He died in 1949.

Stoker and her son moved to Pryor, Okla., where she was employed as a social worker for several years.

She attended graduate school at Tulane University in New Orleans and received her master's degree in social studies from the University of Oklahoma in 1958. In 1960 she moved to San Mateo, Calif., where she was employed as a social worker. She retired as director of social services for San Mateo County in 1972.

From 1963 to 1975 she resided in Montara, Calif. She moved to Caney in 1975 and to Bartlesville in 1988.

Survivors include a son, Sam Stoker, Fairbanks, Alaska; two sisters, Alice Olson, Moline, and Maxine Jontra, Emmett, Idaho; and a brother, Ed Nelson, Aurora, Colo.
