Sam Brady

ATLANTA - Sammy Joe Brady, 34, of Atlanta, died April 11, 1999, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Grandview United Methodist Church. The Rev. Julie Craft will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery at Atlanta.

Friends may call at Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home in Douglass until 8 tonight.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Sam Brady Children's Education Fund, c/o Howard State Bank, Box 428, Howard, KS 67349.

Brady was born Feb. 14, 1965, in Kansas City, Mo. He was a cowboy with Les Cooper Cattle Co.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Lynette Brady, a son, Ty Brady, and two daughters, Jessi Brady and Lacey Brady, all of Atlanta; his mother, Marjorie Mattke, Augusta; two sisters, Beverly Kolter, Douglass, and Carolyn Lucas, Wichita; and a half-brother, Cory Mattke, Augusta.

Leon Usher

CANEY - Leon Weslie Usher, 67, of Caney, formerly of Sedan and Winfield, died April 11, 1999, at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Graves Funeral Home Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery.

The family will receive friends between 7 and 8 tonight at the funeral home. Visitation will continue from 8 a.m. to noon Thursday.

A memorial has been established with Caney Masonic Lodge 324. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Usher was born Nov. 16, 1931, in Quinlin, Okla., to I. Darrell and Constance (Good) Usher. In 1933 they moved to Sedan where he graduated from Sedan High School.

He served in the Kansas National Guard before entering active duty in 1953.

In 1954 he married Guyla J. Tharp. They later divorced.

In August 1977 he married JoeAnna (Mounsey) Wilson.

Usher worked as an electrician in Winfield before moving to Caney in 1977. There he was employed by F&M Corp. He retired in 1996 from Kopco Inc. He was currently a part-time driver for Renzenberger in Coffeyville.

Usher was a member of Caney Masonic Lodge 324 and American Legion Post 138.

Survivors include his wife, JoeAnna Usher, Caney; two sons, Christopher L. Usher, Virginia Beach, Va., and D. Scott Usher, Coffeyville; a daughter, O.S. "Lyn" Buck, Coffeyville; a stepdaughter, MarJean Stimpson, Bartlesville, Okla.; a sister, Wanda White, Sedan; five grandchildren, eight stepgrandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Clare Harris

MOLINE - Clare Etta Harris, 93, homemaker, formerly of Howard and Grenola, died April 12, 1999, at Elk Manor Nursing Home in Moline.

Services will be held later in Floral Hills Cemetery in Kansas City. Cremation has taken place.

A memorial has been established with Elk Manor Nursing Home. Contributions can be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Harris was born July 12, 1905, in Jericho, Texas, to Frank Woodworth and Pearla Lonetta (Perkins) Bales. She attended school in Texas before moving with her family to a farm south of Grenola in 1918.

On Aug. 12, 1927, she married Lewis Earl Harris in Grenola. He died May 6, 1963.

Harris was a resident of Howard for several years before entering Elk Manor Nursing Home in 1989.

She was a member of Howard United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a son, Bill Harris, Salina; a daughter, Betty McQuagge, Columbus, Ga.; a stepson, Earl Harris, Lawrence; two sisters, Anna Garrett and Gladys Ingle, both of Howard; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Ruth Light

HOWARD - Ruth Mae Light, 97, longtime resident of Howard, died April 12, 1999, at Cedar Vale Regional Hospital.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Zimmerman Funeral Home. The Rev. Ted Smith will officiate. Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. in Byrd's Prairie Cemetery near Tupelo, Okla.

Memorials have been established with the Howard Church of Christ and the First Christian Church of Moline. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Light was born Oct. 19, 1901, at Globe in Indian Territory, Okla., to John Wesley and Winnie Haley (Austin) Mooney. She attended school in Cole County, Okla.

On March 29, 1921, she married Joseph Don Carlus Palmer in Tupelo, Okla. They made their home in Tupelo until his death on Dec. 17, 1953. She lived with her son Kenneth and his children in Oklahoma City for six years before returning to Tupelo.

On Dec. 31, 1959, she married Francis Light in Lamont, and they made their home in the Howard area. He died Nov. 12, 1992.

Light was a resident of Elk Manor Nursing Home in Moline for several years and was recently a resident of Twilight Manor Nursing Home in Howard.

She was a longtime member of the Howard Church of Christ.

Survivors include a daughter, Donnie Cranford, Moline; two stepsons and four stepdaughters; a brother, Roy Mooney, Moore, Okla.; a sister, Zona Shankle, Howard; seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and numerous stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

A son, Kenneth Light, and an infant daughter preceded her in death.

Arthur Carlson

UDALL - Arthur G. Carlson, 84, lifelong Udall resident, died April 14, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Udall Cemetery. The family will receive friends between 4 and 7 p.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield.

Memorials have been established with the Udall Congregational Church and the First Responders of Udall. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Carlson was born May 25, 1914, on a farm north of Udall, to Frank and Anna O. Carlson. He was raised and educated in the Udall community and graduated from Udall High School in 1933.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the military police and as a truck driver with the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 in Germany and the European theatre.

On Aug. 27, 1944, he married Dorothy Willis in Udall where they lived throughout their marriage.

Carlson was a carpenter and employed by Bob Sherrard Construction in Winfield for a number of years. He was employed by Montgomery Ward in Wichita for several years prior to his retirement.

A member of the Udall Congregational Church, he was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7065 in Udall.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Carlson, Udall; two daughters, Aletha Pearce, Salina, and Carrie Sharp, Warsaw, Ind.; a brother, Edd Carlson, Winfield; a sister, Ruth Newman, Yates Center; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Martha Neu

Martha M. Neu, 51, of 1802 Fuller, Winfield, died April 14, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon until 9 p.m. Friday.

A memorial has been established with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary in Winfield. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Neu was born Jan. 25, 1948, at Arkansas City, to Amer and Maxine (Bradshaw) Goodnight. She was raised and educated in Florida and moved to Winfield in 1964.

On Nov. 24, 1978, she married Lloyd Neu in Winfield. They had resided in Winfield throughout their marriage.

Neu had worked locally at the former Sears catalogue store and Heritage House nursing home, now Walnut Hill Nursing Center, from 1973 until her retirement in 1991.

She attended Praise Cathedral Church of God in Winfield and was formerly a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband, Lloyd Neu, Winfield; six sons Don Neal, Jerry Neu and Kenny Fields, all of Winfield, David Fields, Fort Rutgers, Ala., Ed Neu, Edmond, Okla., and Jimmy Neu, Hawaii; two daughters, Julie Lavy, Henrietta, Texas, and Linda Redenius, Belle Plaine; her mother, Maxine Ward Collins, Winfield; a brother, Russell Ward, Warrensburg, Mo.; a sister, Judy Smith, Burlington; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Lora Baloun

DOUGLASS - Lora Belle Baloun, 74, of Douglass, died April 14, 1999, in Douglass.

Services will be held at 2 p.m Saturday in Douglass Cemetery. The Rev. Ron Keith will officiate.

Friends may call at Dunsford Chapel in Augusta until 8 tonight.

Memorials have been established with Hospice Inc. and the American Cancer Society.

Baloun was born Nov. 5, 1924, in Thomas, Okla., to Bryan and Bertha (Beard) Taylor.

A retired aircraft worker and waitress, she was a member of the Independent Order of Foresters.

Survivors include two daughters, Johna Smith, El Dorado, and Lasandra Howes, Douglass; a brother, George Taylor, Wichita; two sisters, Gladys Currell, Thomas, Okla., and Edna Hale, Oakwood, Okla.; six grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Two husbands preceded her in death.

George Lentz

Services for George Cecil Lentz, 98, who died April 11, 1999, were held at 1:30 p.m. April 15 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Revs. Rick Thornton and Fred Houston officiated. Burial was in Resthaven Cemetery in Wichita.

Laura Belle Haines was the organist. Martin Rude sang "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross."

Casket bearers were Stanley Becker, Don Call, Bob Carter, Carl Finney, Gerald Raines, Bill Rosecrans and Adolph Weigant.

A memorial has been established with the First United Methodist Church.
