Beverly Sowder
Beverly N. Sowder, 70, of Route 1, Winfield, died May 13, 1999, at her home.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Christian Church. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday.
Memorials have been established with the First Christian Church, Hospice Inc. and the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be made at the church or funeral home.
Sowder was born Sept. 8, 1928, in Plainville, to Wilbur and Edna (Jones) Bright. As a child she moved with her family to Toronto where she was raised and educated. She graduated from Toronto High School in 1946.
On Feb. 25, 1946, she married Jack L. Sowder. They moved to Winfield in 1950. Sowder began her career in health care at St. Mary's Hospital and later worked at William Newton Memorial Hospital. She was also employed at Winfield Medical Arts for 10 years before retiring in 1994.
Sowder was a longtime member of the First Christian Church, where she was active as a deaconess, in the church choir and with the Dorcas group. She was also affiliated with Winfield Business and Professional Women.
Survivors include her husband, Jack Sowder, Winfield; four sons, David Sowder, Sarasota, Fla., Tom Sowder, Shawnee, Okla., Jon Sowder, Jeffersonville, Ind., and Monty Sowder, Wichita; two sisters, Wilburma Stults, Gravendell, Netherlands, and Barbara Hamilton, Corsicana, Texas; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Vera Branen
MOLINE - Vera Melba Branen, 93, a former Grenola resident, died May 13, 1999, at Elk Manor Nursing Home in Moline.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Grenola Christian Church. The Rev. Wallace Wartick will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery
at Grenola.
A memorial has been established with the Grenola Christian Church. Contributions may be left with Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
Branen was born March 25, 1906, at Grenola, to O.J. and Anna Elizabeth (Lendermuth) McKain. She attended rural schools in the Grenola area.
On June 7, 1930, she married Clinton L. Branen. She was a homemaker and helped operate the family farm near Grenola.
Her husband died in 1972. A daughter, Genevieve, also preceded her in death.
Branen was a member of the Grenola Christian Church and remained active until moving to Elk Manor in 1986.
Survivors include four nephews, Robert Potter, Winfield, Delbert Potter, Bartlesville, Okla., Johnny McKain, Gentry, Ark., and Mike McKain, Tulsa, Okla.
Paul Dill
AUGUSTA - Paul Herman Dill, 83, retired self-employed mechanic and KETCH maintenance supervisor, died May 14, 1999, in Augusta.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Southern Baptist Church. Pastor George Bloomquist will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
Friends may call at the church from 6 to 8:30 tonight.
A memorial has been established with the church, 2206 N. Ohio, Augusta, KS 67010.
Dill was born May 24, 1915, in Augusta, to Edward Burton and Gertrude Mary (Hill) Dill.
On Sept. 5, 1970, he married Rose Madeline Brown in Ponca City. She died in February 1992.
Surviors include a son, David Dill, Udall; two daughters, Donna L. Crittenden, Wichita, and Beverly Whaley, Tennessee; three sisters, Helen Ensminger, Wichita, and Ethel Cox and Elva Webster, both of Rose Hill; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Lucile Guthrie
BELLE PLAINE - Services for Lucile M. Guthrie, 80, who died May 10, 1999, were held at 2 p.m. May 14 at the First Presbyterian Church in Belle Plaine. The Rev. Steven Souther officiated. Burial was in Dexter Cemetery.
Organist was Evelyn Fuller. Vocal music selections were "Amazing Grace" and "Just as I Am."
Honorary casket bearers were Elmer "Red" Blasdel, Jim Childers, Elmer Dill, Merlin Nixon, Fred Shaffer and Bill Swigert.
Casket bearers were Chuck Ables, Tim Deshazer, Orin Heater, Andy Hohiesel, Bill McCulloch, Ted Norden and Carl Vandoran.
Miles Funeral Service of Winfield was in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established with the First Presbyterian Church of Belle Plaine.
Cindy Marks
Cindy Angie Marks, 26, a resident of Southwind Residential Services in Winfield, died May 13, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Winfield State Hospital Cemetery. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
Marks was born Feb. 28, 1973, in Wichita, to William and Diane Marks.
She resided at Kansas Neurological Institute from 1975 until 1976 when she moved to the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center. She made her home at Focus Developmental Center in Winfield from September 1996 until moving to Southwinds in November 1998.
She is survived by her sister, Linda Marks, of Winfield.
James Proctor
ARKANSAS CITY - James Robert "Jim" Proctor, 54, of Arkansas City, died May 15, 1999, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Pastor Stephen Butler will officiate. The body will be cremated after Proctor's funeral, and his ashes will be scattered in a private service.
A memorial has been established with the American Diabetes Association. Contributions can be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.
Proctor was born Aug. 17, 1944, in Fort Smith, Ark., to Oscar and Clara (Lydic) Proctor. He was raised and educated in Topeka.
On Dec. 29, 1970, he married Peggy Sue Rector in Topeka. They made their home in Oxford for several years when they owned and operated J.R. Proctor Sales and Service. Proctor later worked for the South Central Kansas Communication Co. in Oxford. Then they moved to Arkansas City where he worked for David's Electronic Store as a television technician for 10 years. He retired in 1993 because of his health.
Proctor was a former member of the Oxford Jaycees and the Cowley County Bass Masters Club.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy Proctor, and two sons, Robert T. Proctor and Jonathan Ryan Proctor, all of Arkansas City; a daughter, Debbie, of California; and his mother and stepfather, Clara and Bill Dinger, Topeka.
Gene Wilcox
Gene M. Wilcox, 91, of 1604 Mound, Winfield, died May 15, 1999, at Winfield Rest Haven.
Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Grace Episcopal Church. The Rev. Bill Fulton will officiate. Inurnment will be at the church.

Wilcox was born Aug. 6, 1907, in St. Paul, to Walter C. and Laura (Railsback) Wilcox. He was raised in Marion, where he graduated from high school in 1927. He graduated from Southwestern College in 1933.
On June 30, 1934, he married Louise Steinberg. She died Dec. 30, 1972.
On Dec. 22, 1973, he married Sally (Dutton) Jarrott.
Wilcox was a case worker for the Sumner County Welfare Department and later was director of the Butler County Welfare Department. He also served as an interviewer for the U.S. Employment Service in Baxter Springs.
In 1941 he became secretary for the Cowley County Medical Society and in 1944 he became secretary for the Butler County Medical Society. In 1951 he became executive secretary of the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians. He retired from that position in 1986 and from the Cowley County Medical Society in 1998.
Wilcox was a member of Winfield Lodge 172 Ancient Free and Accepted Masons and the Wichita Consistory and Scottish Rite. He had been on the board of directors of the Winfield Child Care Center, managed the Eagles' 10- to 12-year-old baseball team and was on the board of directors of Canterbury Village. He was also a member of Grace Episcopal Church where he served as a vestry member and chalicor.
Survivors include his wife, Sally Wilcox, Winfield; a son, Hal Wilcox, Arkansas City; a daughter, Laura Lee Kretschmer, Cincinnati, Ohio; a stepson, John Jarrott Jr., Hutchinson; two stepdaughters, Linda Jarrott, Colwich, and Sally Sue Stratmoen, Herndon, Va.; four grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren, four great-grandchildren and six stepgreat-grandchildren
A son, Philip Wilcox, preceded him in death.
Maxine Hittle
Services for Maxine A. Hittle, 72, who died May 9, 1999, were held at 10:30 a.m. May 12 in Highland Cemetery. The Rev. Ted Brown officiated. The music selection was "Amazing Grace."

Betty Jo Long
Services for Betty Jo Long, 60, who died May 12, 1999, were held at 2 p.m. May 17 in Highland Cemetery. The Rev. Thomas Mitchell officiated.
Vocal music included recordings of "Angels Among Us," sung by Alabama, and "The Rose," sung by Bette Midler.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Beverly Sowder

Martha Brandenburg was the organist. Robert and Carol Sanders sang "Oh, What a Day," and the congregation sang "I Am Thine, O Lord" and "Trust and Obey."
