JACOBS, Geraldine Thomas Jacobs, 83, Atchison, KS passed away Wednesday, October 6, 2004 at Atchison Senior Village.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, October 12, 2004 at Trinity Lutheran Church with The Rev. Lee Seetin officiating. Burial at Sunset Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 7:00-8:30 PM Monday at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church Building Fund or the American Cancer Society and left in care of the funeral home.
Mrs. Jacobs was born February 2, 1921 in Hamlin, KS the daughter of Clyde A. and Bessie (Bryant) Shields. She was a 1939 graduate of Fairview High School in Fairview, KS. She was an Avon representative for over 25 years. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She was a member of V.F.W. Auxiliary Post # 1175. Geraldine enjoyed fishing, camping and was an avid bingo player.
She married Robert Thomas on April 12, 1941 in Little Rock, AR. He preceded her in death in 1975. She later married Altice Jacobs in 1988 and he preceded her in death in 2001. She is also preceded in death by her parents, brothers Walter C. Shields and Norman A. Shields. Sister Mary M. Blair.
She is survived by her sons Gary Thomas and his wife Leslie of Atchison; Frank Thomas and his wife Robin of Atchison. Daughter Linda Martin and her husband Ray of Atchison. 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Sister Gladys Harris of Table Rock, NE.
WITTE, Edward C. Witte, 79 years old, of Bixby, OK, formerly of Winthrop, MO., died Wednesday, Oct. 6th, 2004 at his home in Bixby, OK.
Funeral services will be held at10:00 AM on Monday, Oct. 11th, 2004 at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 8th & Laramie, Atchison, KS. Burial will follow in the Sugar Creek Cemetery, Rushville, MO. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 PM on Sunday, Oct. 10th, 2004 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. The body will be moved to the church one hour prior to services on Monday. The family suggest memorial contributions be given to the American Cancer Society.
Edward C. Witte was born on July 24th, 1922 in Winthrop, MO., the son of John and Minnie (Cook) Witte. He attended Trinity Lutheran Grade School and Rushville High School. Mr. Witte served in the U.S. Air Force, was a raised in the Lutheran Faith, enjoyed hunting, fishing, and making things for family and friends. Mr. Witte had worked many places including General Motors, Aero Smith Tool & Die, Englewood, CA., Vankno Tool and Die, El Monte, CA., and had owned and operated for ten years his own W & W. Tool & Die Machine Shop, in El Monte, CA.
Edward was married to Ellen “Claydean” Vandrell on July 23, 1955 in Las Vegas, NV. She survivors of the home. Additional survivors include two sons; Edward Dean Witte and his wife, Christine, Aurora, MO., Michael Anthony Witte, and his wife Diana, Bixby, OK., a brother, Albert Witte, Winthrop, MO., two sisters, Mrs. Laverne Majors, Winthrop, MO., and Mrs. Opal Davis, Friendswood, TX., and four grandchildren. His parents, a brother, Leonard Witte, and sister, Leota Boatright, preceded him in death.
KAUFMAN, Bernice I. Kaufman, 82 years old, of Atchison, KS. died early Wednesday, October 6, 2004 at the Medicalodge of Atchison.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, October 9th, 2004 at the Trinity Lutheran Church. Burial will follow services at the Sunset Memory Gardens, Atchison, KS. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 PM on Friday, Oct.8th, 2004 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, Ks.. Bernice I. Gaul was born on March 15, 1922 in Troy, Ks., the daughter of Charles F. and Mary (Kley) Gaul. She graduated from Troy High School in 1940. She attended business school for one year, taught for two years at Trinity Lutheran School, and then worked several different places such as, Swift Packing Co., St. Joseph, Mo., Boeing Aircraft (during World War II), Tabor Dress Shop, and the former Snowden-Mize Company, Atchison. She worked as a purchasing clerk for Blish-Mize Company from 1968 to 1987.
She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, was a former member of the PTL of the Trinity Lutheran School, served on the Altar Guild, was a member of the Priscilla Guild, and the Atchison Hospital Auxiliary. Bernice enjoyed crafts, sewing, cooking, and canning.
Bernice was married to Norman Kaufman on Feb. 5, 1944 at the Christ Lutheran Church, Wathena, KS.. Mr. Kaufman preceded her in death on December 9, 1989. Survivors include three sons; Warren Kaufman and his wife, Vickie, of Moore, OK., Gary Kaufman and his wife Tracy ,of Leawood, KS., and Dean Kaufman and his wife Carol, of Topeka, KS. A daughter and her husband, Lisa and Joe Ortiz, Derby, KS. A brother, Raymond Gaul, Troy, KS., two sisters, Doris Myers, Highland, KS., and Virginia Ayres, Fairway, KS. and eight grandchildren.
KAUFMAN, Alice J. Kaufman, 84, Atchison, KS passed away Sunday, October 3, 2004 at Atchison Senior Village.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Thursday, October 7, 2004 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, with visitation from 1:00-2:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home. Burial in Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association in care of Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Kaufman was born September 17, 1920 in Bartlesville, OK the daughter of Ira and Luda (Simpson) Parnell. She was a 1939 graduate of Atchison High School. She worked in the Civil Service during WWII and retired in 1993 as Secretary Treasurer from Kaufman Laboratories. She enjoyed dogs and the outdoors and she loved her family. She was a gently soul and people that knew her loved her.
She married Fred W. Kaufman on November 27, 1941 in Atchison, KS. He preceded her in death on December 27, 1993. She is also preceded in death by her step son Doran Kaufman; brothers William and James Parnell and her parents.
Survivors include 4 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren; sister Mary Goetze and her husband Robert of Lenexa, KS; Brother in law Harold Kaufman
TWENHAFEL, Mildred Louise Twenhafel entered the presence of her Father on September 28, 2004 after viewing the beauty of his creation in Roatan, Honduras. She was born September 18, 1929, the oldest daughter of Herman and Christa Gohlke, in Vernon, Texas. She spent her childhood in Vernon and Littlefield, Texas, helping on the family cotton farm and caring for her younger siblings, especially her sisters. Mildred graduated from Littlefield High School and attended St. John’s Teacher’s College in Winfield, Kansas, where she enjoyed her studies and her friends. She began her lifelong teaching career at St. John’s Lutheran School in Corpus Christi, Texas. She met her husband Arnold through a mutual friend on a blind date. They were married on August 16, 1953 in Littlefield and were blessed with five children. Mildred spent the next forty-eight years as a faithful servant of God and assisting her husband in his ministry. She willingly and gracefully did all that was asked of her as a minister’s wife. Together, they served churches in Texas, Illinois, Michigan, Iowa and Kansas. Throughout all of their moves, Mildred continued her teaching career. In 1973, she began a preschool at their rural church in Victor, Iowa. She was present at the thirty-year anniversary of this preschool in 2003. She moved to Easton, Kansas in 1988 and began teaching in the Head Start program in Leavenworth and later in Atchison, where she was currently employed. Children, teaching and her faith in God were central to her life. She had the ability to make every child feel like they were the only child on earth whenever she spent time with them. Through the years, she taught Sunday School and was active in the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, served as a 4-H leader and taught numerous numbers of kids and adults to bake yeast bread. She was well known for her homemade breads, donuts, jelly and cream pies. She had a memorable laugh and infectious zest for life. She loved being a grandmother to Grant, Sarah, Luke, Jonah, William, Adina and Sammy. She taught them how to cook, bake bread and played and read with them on every visit.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother and a sister. She is survived by her children: Mark Twenhafel of Easton, Randy Twenhafel of Anchorage, Alaska, David Twenhafel of Frederick, Maryland, Christine Samms of Overland Park, Kansas and Karen Twenhafel Grassi of Colorado Springs, Colorado; three brothers, Hubert Gohlke of Farwell, Texas, Eldon Gohlke of Littlefield, Texas and Ernie Gohlke of San Antonio, Texas; two sisters, Gladys Hobratschk of Littlefield, Texas and Edie Bourland of Enid, Oklahoma, an aunt, Cornelia Schultz of San Antonio, Texas; countless friends. She is also survived by the hundreds of children whom she taught and whose lives she touched.
Her family would like to thank the kind people of Honduras and the staff of the United States Embassy for their assistance after her death.
Funeral Services will be 3:00 PM, Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 34771 – 243rd St., Easton, KS. Burial will be in St. John’s Lutheran Church Cemetery, Easton, KS. Family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:30 PM, Tuesday, at the church. Memorials in memory of Mildred are suggested to St. John’s Lutheran Church to be used for capital improvements at the church or the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML). DUNAVAN, Olive E. Dunavan, 86, life long resident of the Atchison Kansas community died Thursday, September 30, 2004 at the Heartland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph, MO.
Funeral Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, Oct. 4th, 2004 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 400 S. 6th St., Atchison with Pastor Valerian J. Ahles, officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Atchison, Ks. The family will receive friends from 3:00 until 6:00 PM on Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, KS. The family suggests memorial contributions be given to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church.
Olive Evelyn Schmidt was born on January 2, 1918 in Muscotah, KS., the second eldest daughter of eight children to Carl H. and Ruth (McBratney) Schmidt. The family moved to Atchison when she was very young, and she attended Atchison Elementary Schools. She graduated from Atchison High School in 1936. Olive received educational training at Fort Hays State College and worked in the Chicago fashion garment industry briefly. Olive worked in the Atchison area most of her life. Employers included; Stein Radio, Wilson Meat Packing, the Wagon Wheel Restaurant, the Kansas Children’s Receiving Home, and the Atchison Hospital.
Olive was a life long member of the St. Marks’ Lutheran Church and held many offices including Noble Grand, in the Atchison Rebecca Lodge. She was extremely creative and enjoyed writing, music, and the graphic arts. She was a constant goodwill ambassador for the Atchison community and always anticipated and enjoyed local happenings and community celebrations. As a member of the “ Greatest Generation”, Olive was patriotic and often wore patriotic colors, In recent days, Olive could be found at the Atchison Senior Citizens Center, playing bingo, games and participating in fund raisers.
She was married to Clayton A. (Pinkie) Dunavan of Clay County, Kansas on January 3, 1942 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Atchison, Kansas. The couple celebrated over 40 years of marriage before Clayton preceded her in death on Aug. 17, 1983. Survivors include a son and his wife, Myron and Patricia Dunavan, Topeka, Kansas, two daughters: Marsha Ann and her husband Larry Downing, Raymore, MO, and Miriam Ava Dunavan, of the home, Atchison, Kansas. Grandchildren are Marcus Aaron Dunavan, Everett, WA, and Matthew Allen Dunavan, Topeka, KS., Two sisters, Betty Ruth Woolston, Mesquite, TX., and Charlotte Kuhn, Atchison, KS., an uncle Arthur McBratney, Atchison and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and long time friends. Her parents, five brothers, Edwin, Robert, Frank, Johnny and Frederick Schmidt, and two sisters; Ethelderose Stanley and Nell D. Lister preceded her in death.
MORROW, Frances Louise Morrow, 98, Atchison, KS passed away Monday, September 27, 2004 at Atchison Hospital.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Thursday, September 30, 2004 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, KS, with The Rev. Steve Hollingsworth officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 AM Thursday at the funeral home. Graveside services will be 3:30 PM Thursday at Pisgah Cemetery

Frances L. Wenger was born on June 10, 1906 in Fairview, OK., the daughter of Ernest and Ottielie (Meyer) Wenger. She graduated from Research Hospital School of Nursing in 1928. She practiced nursing until shortly after her marriage to Walter F. Morrow on April 16th, 1932 in Kansas City, MO. They lived in Magnolia, Mo, on the farm from 1932 to 1963. Mr. Morrow preceded her in death on Aug. 7, 1963. She moved to Kansas City, Mo. and returned to nursing for a short time. She moved to Blue Springs Mo. in 1970 and lived there until she moved to Atchison, Ks. in 1993. She was a member of the Blue Springs United Methodist Church and was a member of the United Methodist Women’s organization. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, embroidery, and canning.
Survivors include a son, Bob Morrow, Harrah, OK., a daughter and her husband, Patricia and Glen Thorne, Lancaster, KS., three sisters; Roma Nave, Lansing, KS., Marie Middleton, Alameda, CA., and Opal McCaffrey, Portola Valley, CA., six grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Her parents, husband, two brothers, and three sisters preceded her in death.
CLINTON, Dorothy E. Buddenbohm Clinton, 78, Effingham, KS passed away Thursday, September 23, 2004 at her home.
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, September 28, 2004 at Effingham Union Church with Rev. Jeff Cochran officiating. Burial at Evergreen Cemetery
in Effingham. Visitation will be from 7:00-8:30 PM Monday at O’Trimble Funeral Home, Effingham. Memorial contributions may be made to Effingham Union Church Step Fund and left in care of the funeral home.
Mrs. Clinton was born April 7, 1926 in Effingham, KS the daughter of Henry W. and Anna A. (Olson) Buddenbohm. She graduated from A.C.C.H.S. Dorothy was a 50 year member of The Order of Easter Star and a member of Effingham Union Church. She served 21 years as the city clerk of Effingham. Dorothy worked 36 years at Atchison County Community High School as well as serving on the Centennial Committee in 1991. She was a long time member of the 48ers and Shirley’s Coffee Group.
She married John Junior Clinton on March 9, 1944 and they were lifetime residents of Effingham. He preceded her in death on June 24, 1984. She was also preceded in death by her parents, step mother Rose (Homolka) Buddenbohm, brothers Leroy, Chet and Harold Buddenbohm.
Survivors include her son Bob Clinton and his wife Jane of Lawrence, KS. Daughter Bonnie Kramer and her husband Jerry of Winchester, KS. 5 grandchildren Bonnie Mills, Lisa Silva, Tracy Vanoncini, Pam BeMent and Karla Larson. 8 great grandchildren Andrea, Samantha and Jacob Mills; Jason and Justin Vanoncini; Mary BeMent; Skyler and Forest Larson.
