Bruce Smith

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Bruce R. Smith, 60, of Kansas City, Mo., formerly of Moline, died May 19, 1999, in Kansas City.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. May 24, 1999, at the Moline Cemetery. Cremation has taken place.

A memorial has been established with the Moline Christian Church. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Smith was born March 13, 1939, in Moline, to Lionel R. and Myrtle (Purkey) Smith. He attended school and grew to manhood in the Moline community.

After graduating from Moline High School in 1957, he attended Emporia State Teachers College before entering the United States Army. After his discharge from the Army, he married Irene Steinmetz in Kansas City, Mo.

They made their home in Kansas City before moving to Sedan where Mr. Smith was employed by Sedan Floral. He served as a nursing home administrator in several Kansas communities before moving to Kansas City. The marriage ended after many years.

Survivors include three sons, Curt Smith, Laverne, Okla., Steve Smith, Pittsburg, and Josh Smith, Chetopa; two daughters, Paige Russell, Girard, and Jennifer Smith, Kansas City, Mo.; two sisters, Sherry Wilson, Moline, and Karolyn Cramer, Springfield, Mo.; and eight grandchildren.

Myrtle Ross

ARKANSAS CITY - Myrtle Iva Ross, 91, of Arkansas City, died May 22, 1999, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. James A.M.E. Church. The Rev. J.P. Taylor will officiate. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Friends may call at Hawks Funeral Home from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.

A memorial has been established with St. James A.M.E. Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home or church.

Ross was born June 6, 1907, in Arkansas City, to Ned Edward and Georgia Etta (Pierson) Preston. She was raised and educated in Arkansas City.

She married Charles Edward Ross, and they lived in Caldwell. After his death on Oct. 18, 1968, she returned to Arkansas City.

On Sept. 5, 1972, Ross began working at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center in the Foster Grandparents program where she worked until transferring to Jefferson Elementary School in Arkansas City in June 1992. She worked there as a foster grandparent until her death.

Ross was a lifelong member of St. James A.M.E. Church where she had been president of the choir and a steward. She joined Meridian Chapter 19, Order of Eastern Star, in 1945, had served as past matron and was still an active member.

Survivors include a nephew, Malcom Preston, Lamesa, Texas; and her great-nephew and nieces whom she raised, Scott Preston, Kansas City, Mo., Rhonda Prince, Atlanta, Ga., Torrie Preston, Oklahoma City, and Montez Elston, address not listed.

Rena Sitton

BURDEN - Rena P. Sitton, 90, of Burden, died May 23, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Burden United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Burden Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorials have been established in the name of Fallyne Lundy, Sitton's granddaughter; with the American Arthritis Association and the Burden United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the church or funeral home.

Sitton was born Feb. 11, 1909, near Wilmot, to Albert and Bessie (Cayton) Walker. She received her early education in Wilmot rural schools before moving with her family to Blackwell, Okla., where she attended high school. As a young woman she worked in restaurants.

On Feb. 21, 1934, she married Ralph "Bud" Sitton at the Cowley County Courthouse in Winfield. They made their home in New Salem for 17 years. They moved to a farm west of Burden in 1951 and into Burden in 1963. She was employed by Arctic Lockers in Burden for many years and also worked for several years at the 160 Cafe.

Sitton attended Burden United Methodist Church and was a longtime affiliate of the Kansas Old-Time Fiddlers, Pickers and Singers.

Survivors include her husband, Ralph Sitton, and a daughter, Pat Lundy, both of Burden; two brothers, Bill Walker, Sterling, and Don Walker, Halstead; a sister, Juanita Norris, Huntsville, Ala.; a grandson and four great-grandchildren.

Esther Littell

BURDEN - Esther Littell, 98, a Burden resident for 66 years, died May 23, 1999, at Grouse Valley Manor in Dexter.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Burden United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Burden Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and until noon Friday.

A memorial has been established with the Burden United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the church or funeral home.

Littell was born Sept. 1, 1900, in Sistersville, W.Va., to Lewis A. and Elsie Etta (McCamey) Fair. She moved with her family to Kansas in 1918.

On June 15, 1919, she married Harley Littell when he returned from service in World War I. They lived in Burns before moving to Cowley County in 1928 and to Burden in 1933.

Her husband died Aug. 27, 1977. Two sons, James L. Littell and Harley Littell Jr., and two daughters, Dollie June Cummings and Marian Luetta Thomas, also preceded her in death.

Littell was a 65-year member of Burden United Methodist Church and a longtime member of the Order of Eastern Star of Burden.

Survivors include two sons, Gene Littell, Burden, and Roland Littell, Bella Vista, Ark.; a daughter, Esther Brunton, Cambridge; 10 grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

Mark White

NEWTON - Mark Wesley White, 29, of Newton, formerly of Winfield, died May 21, 1999, at Newton Medical Center.

Private services were held May 24 in Fairlawn Burial Park in Hutchinson. Pastor Willard D. Stafford officiated.

Memorials have been established with Sleepy Hollow Ronald McDonald House, Wichita, and Northview Development Services, Newton. Contributions may be made through Johnson & Sons Funeral Home, Hutchinson.

White was born May 4, 1970, in Hutchinson, to Marshall K. and Judith A. (Rank) White. He moved from Winfield to Newton in January 1998.

He was a member of Westside Baptist Church in Hutchinson.

Survivors include his father and stepmother, Marshall and Kathi White, a sister, Marsha Ann Maness, and his grandparents, Ervin and Emmaline Rank, all of Hutchinson; and a grandmother, Edythe White, South Hutchinson.

His mother, Judith A. White, preceded him in death.

Charles Bowlby

WICHITA - Charles F. Bowlby, 75, retired Veterans Administration expediter, formerly of Winfield and Udall, died May 22, 1999, in Wichita.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday in White Chapel Cemetery in Wichita. Broadway Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with SCCS Hospice of Derby.

Survivors include a son, David W. Bowlby, Wichita; a daughter, Linda K. Gross, San Antonio, Texas; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Ruth Phillips

MAPLE CITY - Services for Ruth E. Phillips, 89, who died May 20, 1999, were held at 10:30 a.m. May 24 in Maple City Cemetery. The Rev. Art Hays officiated.

Lynn Merritt, Carlene Whitney, Connie Lawson and Jim Phillips performed "Amazing Grace" and "Oh, How I Love Jesus."

Honorary casket bearers were Mike Bowman, Greg and Kevin Hughes, Bill, Brian, Dale, Danny, David, Rick, Roger and Wayne Phillips, Steve Richardson and Mike Vargas.

A memorial has been established with the Winfield Fire Department's Lifesaving Equipment Fund.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Everett Buchanan

LONGTON - Wesley Everett Buchanan, 83, of Longton, died May 23, 1999, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

Services were held at 2 p.m. May 26 in Longton Cemetery. The Rev. Ted D. Davis officiated. Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard was in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association.

Buchanan was born Feb. 13, 1916, in Elk County, to Otis Everett and Viola (Keller) Buchanan. He attended school in Longton and Elk Falls and graduated from Elk Falls High School in 1934.

On Dec. 24, 1937, he married Blossom Mae Smith at Independence. Buchanan was a longtime farmer in the Longton and Elk Falls communities.

Survivors include his wife, Blossom Buchanan, Longton; a daughter, Bonnie Arnold, Lexington, Okla.; two sisters, Bernice Cain and Verna Wilson, both of Moline; a grandson and a great-grandson.

A son, James Buchanan, preceded him in death.

Letha Hebb

HOWARD - Letha Blanche Hebb, 87, of Fall River, died May 23, 1999, at Howard Twilight Manor.

Services will be held at 2 p.m Thursday at Zimmerman Funeral Home. The Rev. Don Harper will officiate. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with Howard Twilight Manor and Fall River Christian Church.

Hebb was born July 21, 1911, in Higgins, Texas, to Charles Ellerson and Lanora Lamira (Furman) Jontra. The family moved to Shattuck, Okla., where she attended school. When she was a teenager, they moved to Elk County.

On Jan. 1, 1929, she married Manley Lee Hebb in Howard. They lived south of Howard until moving to a ranch near Fall River in 1931. Her husband died Dec. 19, 1995.

Two sons, Melvin and Roland Hebb, and two daughters, Phyllis and Kathy Hebb, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include four sons, Kurly Hebb, Kaufman, Texas, Gary Hebb, Howard, and Donald and Max Hebb, both of Fall River; a daughter, Donna Cross, Eureka; two sisters, Weltha Wells, Clintwood, Va., and Muriel Cody, Longton; 24 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Corey King

Corey King, 3, son of Richard King and Linda Mauzey of 406 Indiana, Winfield, died May 25, 1999, as a result of a car accident east of Winfield.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 p.m. today.

Corey was born July 29, 1995, in Osage County, Mo.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his grandparents, Betty Lacey, Arkansas City, and Mr. and Mrs. Leland King Jr., Winfield; and his great-grandmother, Arlene White, Winfield.

Charlotte VanLaningham

TOPEKA - A memorial service for Charlotte Love VanLaningham, 98, who died Feb. 17, 1999, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Winfield.

Survivors include a son, E.L. VanLaningham, Topeka; a daughter, Geraldine Thomas, Albuquerque, N.M.; a sister, Ruth Lamb, Detroit; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Newcomber Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
