Mildred Morris

DALLAS - Mildred K. Morris, 88, of Dallas, formerly of Winfield, died June 14, 1999, at St. Paul's Hospital in Dallas.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel in Winfield. The Rev. Guy Rendoff will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. to service time Friday.

Morris was born Sept. 7, 1910, in Winfield, to Alonzo P. and Mary Elizabeth (Smith) Tonkinson. She attended Winfield schools and graduated from Winfield High School in 1929.

On Sept. 21, 1928, she married Marshall A. Morris in Winfield. They lived in Arkansas City where he owned and operated Morris Ready Mix. They moved to Dallas in 1960. He died Aug. 16, 1991.

Morris was a member of Lover's Lane United Methodist Church and the Fortnightly Club. She had operated a Girl Scout Camp in Arkansas City and belonged to several bridge clubs.

Survivors include a son, Philip Morris, Dallas; a daughter, Melinda Kehr, Arkansas City; a sister, Martha Kempton, California; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Bernard Stiner

WAUKEGAN, Ill. - Bernard H. Stiner, 82, of Waukegan, died May 22, 1999, at Provena St. Therese Medical Center in Waukegan.

Services were held May 26 at Peterson and Patch Funeral Home in Waukegan. A memorial has been established in his memory.

Stiner was born Sept. 18, 1916, in Cowley County and had lived in the Waukegan area since 1942. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1936, from Southwestern College in 1941 and from the University of Oklahoma, Norman, with a Master of Music Education degree. He also studied at Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and the University of Kansas, Lawrence.

Stiner began his teaching career at Arkansas City High School in 1941 as band and orchestra director and as a graduate assistant at the University of Oklahoma in 1942. During World War II, he served as a musician in the Navy at Great Lakes.

Stiner taught instrumental and vocal music at many schools in Chicago and Waukegan and was assistant professor of music and director of bands at the University of Wisconsin, Parkside Campus. He also directed the Waukegan All City Concert Band.

He belonged to numerous professional and music organizations and received many awards for achievement, including outstanding participation as director of the Waukegan Municipal Band in American Legion Memorial Day parades presented by Waukegan American Legion Post 281.

Survivors include his wife, Caryl (Keating) Stiner, Waukegan, and a sister, Frieda Beth Kuhn, Long Beach, Calif.

Bobbie Haak

Bobbie Q. Haak, 70, a resident of Martin Luther Homes in Winfield, died June 12, 1999, at his home.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday.

A memorial has been established with Martin Luther Homes Inc. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Haak was born July 2, 1928, in Whitewater to Jesse and Edith (Jameison) Haak.

In 1933, when he was five years old, Haak became a resident of Winfield State Hospital and Training Center where he lived for 63 years. He moved to Focus Developmental Center in Winfield in 1996 and to Martin Luther Homes in October 1998.

He is survived by a brother, Charles Haak, California, and his guardian, Shirley Booe, Winfield.

Twilla Sadler

ARKANSAS CITY - Twilla Lucille Sadler, 70, of Arkansas City, died June 7, 1999, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul United Methodist Church. Hawks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

There will be no visitation as the body has been donated to the University of Kansas Medical Center.

Sadler was born Nov. 9, 1928, in Adair County, Iowa, to Howard Everett and Hazel Lucille (Kelley) Milhern. She attended schools in that area and graduated from Orient-Macksburg High School in 1948.

She lived in southern Iowa, St. Joseph, Mo., Waynesville, Mo., Texas and Ponca City before moving to Arkansas City in 1985.

In 1946 she married John Krabiel. They later divorced.

She married Harold "Tubby" Sadler, who died in 1965.

She married Les Hope in 1967.

For many years she worked in food service.

Survivors include her husband, Les Hope, a son, Harold "Ben" Sadler, and two daughters, Nancy Schroff and Lynda Redman, all of Arkansas City; a stepson, David Sadler, Creston, Iowa; and several grandchildren.

Kalman Csukas

Kalman Csukas, 86, of Winfield, died June 17, 1999, at Winfield Rest Haven.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church with a reception to follow. Private services will be conducted in Highland Cemetery.

Visitation at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home will be until 8 this evening.

Memorials have been established with the First Presbyterian Church, Winfield Rest Haven and Hospice Inc.

A longtime resident of Winfield, Csukas was born June 20, 1912, in Komarno, Hungary, to Jan and Jolana Pati-Nagyova Csukas.

After completing agriculture school, he worked on the family farm until joining the Hungarian Cavalry. He served in the cavalry during World War II, was an American prisoner of war and was interned in Germany. At the end of the war, his homeland was under communist rule and he did not return.

He met Rose Pfeiffer Liebherr in Mannheim, Germany, and they married on Nov. 30, 1946.

In January 1952, sponsored by Church World Services and the Presbyterian Church, the family, consisting of Kalman, Rose, Gunter and Jolan, arrived in Winfield. Shortly after their arrival, their son, Clay, was born.

For the next 16 months, they lived in Cambridge where Kalman worked on the ranch of Clay J. and Eldearia Smith. After moving to Winfield, he was employed by Smith and Moon Steel Co. as a welder until his retirement in 1980. An avid builder and gardener, he also worked part time for Joe Gordon Construction and maintained yards for a number of friends.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Winfield for 47 years.

Survivors include his wife, Rose Csukas, and a daughter, Jolan Womacks, both of Winfield; a stepson, Gunter Liebherr, Andover; two sisters, Christina Moroc and Jolan Csukas, both of Komarno, Slovensko; and two grandsons.

He was preceded in death by a son, Clay Kalman Csukas, in 1970.

Marcelo Cornejo

A Mass of Christian Burial for Marcelo Cornejo Sr., 65, who died June 15, 1999, was celebrated at 2 p.m. June 18 at Holy Name Catholic Church. A Rosary service was held at 7 p.m. June 17. The Rev. Michael Maybrier officiated at both services. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery. American Legion Post 10 provided military honors.

Annette Linnebur was the organist. The St. Rose Spanish Choir sang "Me Allegre," "Oye El Llamado," "Pan De Vida" and "Caminando Juntos."

Ushers were Paul Cornejo Jr. and James Aikins.

Casket bearers were Lloyd Negrete, Tony Ramirez, Tony Cornejo, Salvador Jaramillo, Andy Castaneda and Pete Negrete.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Russell Hall

Russell R. Hall, 92, of 5 Roberts Court, Winfield, died June 16, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, north of Arkansas City.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight.

A memorial has been established with Home Health Care at William Newton Memorial Hospital. Contributions may be made through the hospital or funeral home.

Hall was born Jan. 25, 1907, in the Tisdale community, to Will R. and Theresa (Sackett) Hall. He attended Winfield schools and graduated from Winfield High School in 1925. He was employed by Paul Guy Battery Service in Winfield and attended Winfield Commercial College.

On Aug. 3, 1929, he married Eva L. Smalley in Winfield.

During the 1930s he worked as a mechanic for the Oscar Gafney Dodge Agency and Robert Latta Auto Service in Winfield. He was employed for two years by the Kansas Highway Department and later worked as a mechanic for Jack Lane Chevrolet in Winfield before working at Boeing Aircraft Co. during World War II.

Following the war, Hall worked as a mechanic for Floyd Davis for 10 years. He owned and operated Russ's Auto Service from 1953 until retiring in 1985.

Hall was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he served as an usher for 23 years. He was also a member of Winfield Country Club.

Survivors include his wife, Eva Hall, Winfield; a son, Ray R. Hall, Phoenix; two grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Irwin Huggins

SABETHA - Irwin M. "Hug" Huggins, 76, of Sabetha, formerly of the Oxford area, died June 15, 1999, at Sabetha Community Hospital.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. June 18 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sabetha. The Rev. Donald Redmond, OSB, officiated. Burial was in Sabetha Cemetery. Military honors were conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7285.

A parish prayer service was held at 7 p.m. June 17 at Popkess Mortuary Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Basic Cancer Research at Kansas State University or the Sabetha Community Hospital. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Huggins was born May 23, 1923, near Wichita, to Ivan and Mary (Stout) Huggins. He grew up in the Oxford area and graduated from Oxford High School in 1941.

He went to work for Douglas Aircraft Base in Los Angeles after graduation but entered the United States Army during World War II. After being discharged in 1946, he worked for an oil well drilling company until 1951 when he began working for Flentie's Implement Co. in Sabetha. He worked there as a mechanic until his retirement in 1997.

On April 7, 1951, he married Virginia Nolte in Seneca.

Huggins was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the parish council, the Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7285, John L. Palmer American Legion Post 126 and Sabetha Men's Bowling League.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Huggins, Sabetha; two sons, Mark C. Huggins and Patrick J. Huggins, both of Topeka; two daughters, Mary Walton, Topeka, and Susan Tollefson, Longview, Texas; a sister, Ruth Gillock, Arkansas City; a niece, Theresa Waite, Winfield; and nine grandchildren.
