Kalman Csukas

Services for Kalman Csukas, 86, who died June 17, 1999, were held at 10:30 a.m. June 19, 1999, at the First Presbyterian Church. Associate Pastor Diane Massey officiated.

A private committal service was held in Highland Cemetery.

Liturgist Gyula Mikler read the 23rd Psalm in Hungarian.

June Vasey was the organist, and Charlotte Hayward sang "The Lord's Prayer." Congregational hymns were "Amazing Grace," "Morning Has Broken," "In the Garden" and "Take My Life."

Honorary casket bearers were Michael, Darren and Rex Womacks, Sheilah Liebherr, Eldearia and Clay Smith, Hilda Ray and Florence Gordon.

Casket bearers were Joe Gordon, Jim King, Jim Gardner, Ernest Hensley, Van Coble and Gilbert Scott.

Memorials have been established with First Presbyterian Church, Winfield Rest Haven and Hospice Inc.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mary Sue Lawrence

INDEPENDENCE - Mary Sue Lawrence, 56, of Independence, died June 20, 1999, at Mercy Hospital.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Potts Chapel. Memorial services will be held later by Class Ltd. in Independence.

Lawrence was born Sept. 23, 1942, in Winfield, to Harry Alford and Mary Josephine (Esch) Lawrence.

Employed by Class Ltd. in Independence, she was a member of Seniors with Class.

Survivors include her guardian, Karen Irving, and friends at Class Ltd.

Charlie Berry

ARKANSAS CITY - Charlie Joe Berry Sr., 68, of Arkansas City, died June 19, 1999, at Walnut Hill Nursing Center in Winfield.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hawks Funeral Home. The Rev. William O. Reed Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home this evening until 8 and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Berry was born Feb. 10, 1931, in Holbert, Okla., to George Dewey and Sally Berry. He was raised in the Oklahoma City area. He married Lottie Mae Berry, who preceded him in death.

While living in Oklahoma City, he worked at Otasco.

Berry later moved to Arkansas City and married Helen Vera Major. She preceded him in death.

He worked at Otasco, A.L. Short Motors, Tubbs Motor Co. and Rodeo Meats until his retirement in the early 1980s.

He later married Pat McGinn.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia McGinn, Arkansas City; four sons, Nathan Berry and Porter Berry, both of Arkansas City, Glendale Berry, Winfield, and Charlie Berry Jr, Hackney; five daughters, Linnie Mae Berry, Paulette Jackson and Rosetta Berry, all of Oklahoma City, Glenda Brantley, Arkansas City, and Mary Denise Thompson, Wichita; four brothers, Dewey Berry, Oklahoma City, William Berry and James Nero, both of Wichita, and Anthony "A.D." Berry, Arkansas City; two sisters, Vernabelle Pratt, Oklahoma City, and Lulu Mae Wright, Dallas; 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A son, Reggie Berry, and two daughters, Alversa Berry and Debra Berry, preceded him in death.

Nellie Batt

Nellie E. Batt, 82, longtime resident of Florence, died June 21, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village in Winfield.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Florence United Methodist Church. The Rev. Steve Thaden will officiate. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Zeiner Funeral Home, 104 W. Fifth, Florence, from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Family will greet friends at that time.

Memorials have been established with the Florence United Methodist Church and the Florence Alumni Association.

Batt was born Aug. 1, 1916, in Weir, to Charles Crabb and Rosa French.

On July 22, 1942, she married Alvin M. Batt in Weir. She lived in Florence from 1939 to 1997 when she moved to Good Samaritan Village.

A retired elementary school teacher in Florence, she was a member of the Florence United Methodist Church, Delta Kappa Gamma, the Florence library board, the American Association of University Women and the Kansas Teachers Association.

Survivors include her husband, Alvin Batt, and two daughters, Candy Pettey and Cindy Goertz, all of Winfield; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Marie Wells

MULVANE - Marie C. Wells, 92, formerly of Winfield, died June 21, 1999, at Villa Maria care home in Mulvane.

A Rosary will be said at 7:30 tonight at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Holy Name Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with Holy Name Catholic Church.

Wells was born Dec. 1, 1906, at Wellsville, Mo., to Josiah James and Rosa (Wollenman) Reighley.

On June 4, 1936, she married Otis Flynn Wells in Winfield. He died in February 1967.

Wells worked for many years as an attendant at the Giant Wash in Winfield. She was active in Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts and was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and its altar society.

Survivors include two sons, Joseph Wells, Mulvane, and David D. Wells, Wichita; a daughter, Rosann Voigtlander, Grenola; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Ronnie Seeliger

Services for Ronnie Jean Seeliger, 62, who died June 16, 1999, were held at 2 p.m. June 21 at Tisdale United Methodist Church. The Revs. Quentin Bennett and Steven R. Chambers officiated. Burial was in Union-Graham Cemetery.

Irma Scholfield was the the organist, and Katherine Seeliger was the piano soloist. Mary Akers sang "The Lord's Prayer" and "Because He Lives." The Tisdale United Methodist Choir sang "Make Me a Blessing."

The piano postlude was a recording of "The Hallelujah Chorus" made by Ronnie Jean Seeliger in 1986.

Honorary casket bearers were Richard Rock, Dick Turner and Richard Vaughters.

Casket bearers were Laurence Cunningham, Orvel Mason, Mark Seeliger, Mike Seeliger, Mike Smith and Lee Velasquez.

Memorials have been established with the American Cancer Society, Central Christian Church in Arkansas City and Tisdale United Methodist Church.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Maxine Wells

ROCK - L. Maxine Wells, 75, of Rock, died June 23, 1999, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Rock United Methodist Church. Bishop Choo Sin Ho and the Rev. Guy E. Rendoff will officiate. Burial will be in Stalter Cemetery near Rock.

Memorials have been established with the Rock Community Council and the Arthritis Foundation. Contributions may be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home in Arkansas City.

Wells was born Dec. 21, 1923, in Harper County, to Lester L. and Rachel Marie (Evans) Brown. She was raised and educated in Argonia and graduated from Argonia High School in 1941.

On May 28, 1944, she married Marvin J. Wells in Argonia. They had made their home at Rock since 1949.

Wells worked as a cook in the Rock and Udall schools for several years in addition to working on the family farm.

She was a longtime member of Rock United Methodist Church and the Rocket Extension Homemaker Unit.

Survivors include her husband, Marvin Wells, Rock; two sons, Dennis Wells, Winfield, and Deuane Wells, Arkansas City; a daughter, Connie Hittle, Winfield; four brothers, Clayton Brown, Apache Junction, Ariz., Marvin Brown, San Diego, Donnie Brown, Wichita, and Gary Brown, Seattle; four sisters, Colleen Meyers, Tucson, Aline Gregory, Mesa, Ariz., Mary Lou Petersen, Derby, and Diane Kent, Seattle; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Marie Wells

A Rosary service for Marie C. Wells, 92, who died June 21, 1999, was held at 7:30 p.m. June 23 at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. June 24 at Holy Name Catholic Church. The Revs. Mike Garrahy and Jim Mainzer officiated.

Dorothy Groene was the organist, and Bill Chamberland was the song leader. Music included "Ave Maria," "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art."

Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery. Casket bearers were Andy and Bill Voigtlander, Paul Schultz and Stephen, Davis and Matthew Wells.

Vernon Hazzard

WELLINGTON - Clarence "Vernon" Hazzard, 87, of Wellington, died June 23, 1999, in Wichita.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Belle Plaine United Methodist Church. The Rev. Andy Torres will officiate. Burial will be in Belle Plaine Cemetery.

Friends may call at Hatfield-Smith Funeral Home until 8 tonight.

Memorials have been established with the Belle Plaine United Methodist Church and Belle Plaine Alumni.

Hazzard was born April 24, 1912, in Belle Plaine, to Rex Hilliard and Ora May (Overy) Hazzard. He married Mildred M. Conklin in Oklahoma on Nov. 26, 1937.

A retired farmer and stockman, Hazzard had been president of the rural electric cooperative and a member of the Belle Plaine school board, Belle Plaine Buckeroos, Belle Plaine United Methodist Church and Farm Bureau policy committee.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Hazzard, Wellington; a son, Lt. Col. Bill Hazzard, Copperas Cove, Texas; a daughter, Connie Jo Bannon, Aztec, N.M.; a brother, Rex Hazzard, and a sister, Clarina Clewell, both of Wellington; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Rita Bonesteel

BURDEN - Laurette "Rita" Bonesteel, 75, longtime Burden resident, died June 23, 1999, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus, Wichita, as a result of injuries received in an automobile accident.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Burial will be in Burden Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The family will receive friends at the Tracy Spencer home, 1820 Millington, Winfield.

Memorials have been established with the Burden Volunteer Fire Department and the Evangelical Free Church in Winfield.

Bonesteel was born Aug. 24, 1923, near Burden, to Ernest E. and Ida (Logsdon) Tredway. She was raised and educated in the Burden community and graduated from Burden High School in 1941.

For several years she was employed as an operator for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. in Winfield.

On Sept. 19, 1943, she married Riley E. Bonesteel at Blackwell, Okla. They resided in Michigan for a short time before returning to Burden. Her husband died Nov. 11, 1997.

Bonesteel began employment with Winfield State Hospital and Training Center in 1959 and retired in 1985, following 26 years of service as a psychiatric aide.

A member of the former Bible Baptist Church in Burden, she attended the Evangelical Free Church in Winfield. She was also affiliated with the Burden Masonic Lodge and the Burden Community Club.

Survivors include a son, Rex Bonesteel, Burden; two daughters, Linda Spencer, Winfield, and Teresa Cannon, Burden; a brother, Leland Tredway, Winfield; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
