Carmel Miller
Carmel Miller, 87, formerly of 1520 Millington, Winfield, died June 25, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Highland Cemetery. The Rev. Shawn Sturm will officiate.
Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday.
A memorial has been established with the First Christian Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Miller was born Aug. 22, 1911, in Braman, Okla., to Harry Aaron and Mary Marie (Peterson) Markley. She attended Winfield schools and graduated from Winfield High School. She also graduated from the Wichita School of Cosmetology.
In 1946 she married Harry Miller in Winfield where they resided. He died April 6, 1955.
Miller owned and operated the Beauty Rest Salon for more than 60 years. She was a member of the Winfield American Legion Post 10 Auxiliary and had been active in the First Christian Church.
Survivors include two brothers, Arnold "Buck" Markley and Wayne Markley, both of Winfield; and two sisters, Lola Clodfelter, Winfield, and Verda Porter, Norman, Okla.
Guy Denton
HOWARD - Guy Morgan Denton, 68, died June 26, 1999, at Howard Twilight Manor.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Howard United Methodist Church. The Rev. Kibum Kim will officiate. Military services and burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with the Howard United Methodist Church Building Fund and the Howard Twilight Manor Van Fund. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home.
Denton was born Nov. 19, 1930, in Wichita, to Guy Vernet and Gladys Viola (Morgan) Denton. He graduated from Howard High School in 1949 and attended Oklahoma A&M at Stillwater before entering the United States Air Force in 1951.
He served as a fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force until 1956 and enlisted in the Kansas Air National Guard in June 1962. He attained the rank of major before being discharged in November 1975 due to ill health. In addition to his military career, he was a farmer and oil producer in Elk County.
Denton was married twice.
A former member of the West Elk school board and past president of the Howard Fair Association, he was a longtime member of Carter-Raider American Legion Post 149 in Howard, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Howard United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, David Denton, Howard; two daughters, Marcella Price, Emporia, and Lora Kerns, Highlands Ranch, Colo.; his mother, Gladys Denton, and his sister, Dorothy Pagan, both of Howard; and seven grandchildren.
Anna Goode
CEDAR VALE - Anna "Ruth" Goode, 87, of Cedar Vale, died June 25, 1999, at Cedar Vale Community Hospital.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Wauneta United Methodist Church. The Rev. Dois Nix will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery
at Sedan.
Friends may meet with the family at the church from 5 to 8 tonight.
A memorial has been established with the church. Contributions may be made through Graves Funeral Home in Caney.
Goode was born Jan. 17, 1912, in Rolla, to Edmund B. and Anna L. (Hobson) Dryden. She was raised in Rolla and Sedan and graduated from Sedan High School in 1930. After attending Southwestern College, she taught in Chautauqua and Elk county schools.
On Dec. 24, 1934, she married Cecil Goode in Burden. They made their home in Wauneta for many years before moving to Cedar Vale in 1994. He died July 30, 1995.
Goode was a member of the Wauneta United Methodist Church where she played piano for services and took part in other church activities for many years. She was also involved with 4-H and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma sorority.
Survivors include a son, Don Goode, Cedar Vale; two daughters, Eva Bever, Sedan, and Coral Ann Magnus, Cedar Vale; seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
Betty Harris-Geer
DERBY - Betty Ruth (Shields) Harris-Geer, 57, homemaker, of Derby, died June 25, 1999, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Services were held at 2 p.m. June 28 at First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Larry W. Cracraft officiated, and burial was in El Paso Cemetery. Smith Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
Memorials have been established with the American Heart Association, the American Diabetes Association and the Leukemia Society.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth R. Geer, Derby; four sons, Kenneth Geer Jr. and Larry Harris, both of Douglass, Kevin Harris, Winfield, and Roger Bergen, Detroit, Mich.; five daughters, Jeanette Mohr, Rose Hill, Cindy Collingsworth, Westminster, Calif., Pauline Leckie, Diamond Bar, Calif., De De Geer, Huntington Beach, Calif., and Sheryl Moore, Missouri; her mother, Maxine Shields, and a brother, Virgil Shields, both of Derby; two sisters, Joyce Merritt, Rose Hill, and Marilyn Bevins, Ozawkie; 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Grace Cantu
Grace Isabell Cantu, daughter of Jose' Luis and Elizabeth "Libby" (Kent) Cantu, was stillborn June 25, 1999, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services were held at 3 p.m. June 26 at Holy Name Catholic Church. Private burial services were in St. Mary's Cemetery. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Survivors in addition to her parents are two brothers, David Cantu and Dominick Cantu, and three sisters, Katie Cantu, Gaby Cantu and Bethany Cantu, all of Winfield; and her grandparents, Mary Kent, Winfield, and Juan and Margarita Cantu, Monterrey, Mexico.
Marjorie York
ASHLAND - Marjorie Ellen York, 83, of Ashland, died June 23, 1999, at Ashland Health Center.
Services were held at 10:30 a.m. June 28 at the First Baptist Church of Ashland. The Revs. Joe Conaway and Don Hasty officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery, Ashland.

York was born Oct. 15, 1915, in Ashland, to Harry Brannon and Gertrude Abbie (Johnston) Christman. A lifetime resident of Ashland, she married Russell Raymond York on June 9, 1940, in Topeka. He died April 5, 1996.
A homemaker, York also worked as a secretary for the Office of Price Administration, W.G. Carson Real Estate and Abstracting, the firm of Price and Cosman and State Representative W.H. Shattuck.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church, 20th Century Club, Circle of Friends Club and Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors include two sons, Robert Lee York, Wichita, and Walter Frank York, Ashland; a daughter, Jane Hart, Vail, Colo.; a brother, Harry V. Christman Jr., Tucson; a sister, Mildred Smith, Denver; and 10 grandchildren.
Rita Bonesteel
Services for Laurette "Rita" Bonesteel, 75, who died June 23, 1999, were held at 2 p.m. June 28 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Art Hays officiated. Burial was in Burden Cemetery.
Organist Keith Anglemyer played "In the Garden." Vocal music selections were "How Great Thou Art," "Where the Roses Never Fade" and "Amazing Grace," performed by Rex Beeney.
Honorary casket bearers were Brandi and Robin Bonesteel, Rachel Sparks and Mandi Stout.
Casket bearers were Mike and Rod Bonesteel, Chris Cannon, Alan Miller and Tim and Tyler Spencer.

Daniel Marten
Daniel Frederick Marten, 87, of Route 1, Winfield, died June 29, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church. The Rev. Roderick Hathaway will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Memorials have been established with Trinity Lutheran Church and the American Cancer Research Foundation. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Marten was born May 22, 1912, in Effingham County, Ill., to William and Katherina (Esch) Marten. He attended the German Lutheran parochial schools in Effingham. In 1934 he hitchhiked to Kansas to work the wheat harvest.
On Dec. 10, 1939, he married Marie Sherwood in Winfield. Together they farmed and ranched in the Grandview community for more than 40 years.
Marten was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Cowley County Landowners Association and Kansas Sunchasers camping organization.
Survivors include his wife, Marie Marten, Winfield; a son, John Marten, Wichita; two daughters, Sandra Lyons, Denton, Texas, and Janice Kamen, Wichita; three sisters, Ruth Wilson, Wichita, Dorothy Bailey, Watson, Ill., and Minnie Anna Parmentor, Waterford, Mich.; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Gladys Bewley
AUGUSTA- Gladys Amina Bewley, 93, of Augusta, formerly of Howard, died June 30, 1999, from injuries received in a vehicle accident.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Fawn Creek Cemetery
near Tyro. The Rev. Vern Bowers will officiate.
Memorials have been established with the Howard and Augusta United Methodist churches. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
Bewley was born Feb. 19, 1906, at Udall, to Frank Albert and Ada Belle (Reder) Brewer. She graduated from high school in Wichita.
On May 29, 1926, she married Cliff Sawyer Hitchcock in Newton. They made their home in Howard where they owned and operated the Western Auto store for many years. He died April 26, 1978.
On July 6, 1982, she married Maurice Bewley in Miami, Okla. They lived on a farm north of Fall River. After his death on May 13, 1989, she moved to Augusta.
Bewley was a member of Chapter R of P.E.O. in Howard, the Augusta United Methodist Church and the Round Table organization of Augusta. She was a former member of the Howard United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a stepson, Calvin Bewley, Eureka; a sister, Edith Barkley, Wichita; 11 stepgrandchildren and one stepgreat-grandchild.
