Elsie Schwartz
AUGUSTA - Elsie E. Schwartz, 84, of Augusta, died July 7, 1999, at Lakepoint Nursing Center in Augusta.
No service will be held. Cremation has taken place. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Schwartz was born June 7, 1915, in Chicago, to Frank and Elizabeth (Schimmel) Huss. She graduated from high school in Chicago.
On June 3, 1939, she married Donald Schwartz in Chicago. He died March 14, 1996.
Schwartz was a secretary for Wagner Corp. in Schaumberg, Ill., for many years.
Survivors include a daughter, Donna Bohaty, Jordan, Ark.; a brother, John Huss, California; a sister, Ruthie Koehler, Sacramento, Calif.; three grandchildren, including Chris Williamson, Rock; and seven great-grandchildren.
Jim Thompson
BELLE PLAINE - James R. "Jim" Thompson, 47, of Belle Plaine, died July 6, 1999, as a result of an automobile accident.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Memorial Chapel in Winfield. Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight. Cremation will take place after the service.
Thompson was born Oct. 7, 1951, in Wellington, to Warren and Kathryn (Bickel) Thompson. He graduated from Gardena High School in Gardena, Calif.
On Nov. 5, 1976, he married Carrie Renea Milam in Wellington.
Thompson owned and operated Thompson Lawn Care in Belle Plaine. He had previously worked at Cessna Aircraft and Piaggio Aircraft in Wichita.
Survivors include his wife, Carrie Thompson, Belle Plaine; a son, James W. Thompson, Wichita; a daughter, Jaime Albright, Belle Plaine; his mother, Kathryn Thompson, address not given; a sister, Glenda Alter, Wichita; and one grandchild.
Shannon Gustafson
GRENOLA - Shannon Lynn Gustafson, 19, of Grenola, died July 8, 1999, at her grandparents' home in Grenola.
Services will be held at 9 a.m. Monday at the Grenola Christian Church. The Rev. Wallace Wartick will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery.
Friends may call at Zimmerman Funeral Home from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday.
Shannon was born June 3, 1980, in Winfield, to John Cook and Kelly Diane (Shoemaker) Gustafson. Because of her health, she was unable to work.
She was a member of the Grenola Christian Church.
Survivors include her mother, Kelly Diane Gustafson, Walnut Creek, Calif.; a brother, Michael Gustafson, Dallas; and her grandparents, Harriet and Charles Mundy, Grenola.
Geneva Near
DERBY - Geneva K. Near, 87, homemaker, of Derby, died July 9, 1999, in Derby.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Udall Cemetery. Dr. Don Snyder will officiate.
Smith Mortuary has charge of arrangements.
Near was born Jan. 16, 1912, in Mountain Hope, Mo., to George and Memory (Vanderpool) Anderson.
She married William Howard Near in Hugoton.
Survivors include two sons, Gary L. Near, Idaho, and Rodney R. Near, Wichita; a stepson, Billy D. Near, Kingman; a sister, Nellie, Liberal; and two grandchildren.
Charles Thompson
WICHITA - Charles R. Thompson Jr., 68, of Wichita, died July 7, 1999, at his home.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Lakeview Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Lakeview Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 8 a.m. to noon Monday.

Thompson was born Aug. 25, 1930, in Dayton, Ohio, to Charles Russell Thompson Sr. and Hazel Adeline (Childers) Thompson.
A veteran of the Korean War, he was a technical sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. He retired as a technical sergeant stationed at McConnell Air Force Base.
Survivors include three sons, Stephen Thompson, Huntersville, N.C., Dennis Thompson, Copperas, Texas, and Daniel Thompson, Wichita; three daughters, Cheryl Underwood, Winfield, and Kathleen Hill and Andrea Thompson, both of Wichita; two brothers, John Thompson, Nevada, and James Thompson, Dayton, Ohio; two sisters, Geraldine Lemmings, Kettering, Ohio, and Elizabeth Gibson, Dayton, Ohio; 16 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and his former wife, Wilma Thompson, Winfield.
Helen Dean
Helen C. Dean, 74, of 1217 E. 15th, Winfield, died July 9, 1999, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Central Baptist Church. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery.
Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. to service time Tuesday.

Dean was born July 29, 1924, in Dexter, to Leonard and Gladys (Myers) Koonce. She attended schools in the Dexter area.
In September 1958 she married Samuel Emberton. He died in May 1986.
In January 1988 she married Robert Dean.
She had worked in health care at White Hall in Winfield, Winfield State Hospital and Training Center and Riverview Manor in Oxford before retiring in 1976.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Dean, Winfield; three daughters, Karen Jenkins and Carol Lee, both of Oxford, and Sharon Marsh, Winfield; three stepsons, Kerry Dean, Midlothian, Va., Kelly Dean, Gahanna, Ohio, and Mark Dean, Jonesboro, Ga.; a stepdaughter, Merry Belle England, Winfield; a brother, Max Thomason, Oklahoma City; a sister, Marie Wakefield, Augusta; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
Jim Thompson
Services for James R. "Jim" Thompson, 47, who died July 6, 1999, were held at 11 a.m. July 9 in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Memorial Chapel. The Revs. Lyle Bolen and Charles Taff officiated.
Music selections were "Love Me Tender," "Wish You Were Here" and "Just an Old Hippie."
Jack Carl
DOUGLASS - Jack W. Carl Sr., 76, of Douglass, formerly of Mulvane, died July 12, 1999.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Douglass United Methodist Church. The Rev. Neal Alford will officiate. Burial will be in Douglass Cemetery.
Friends may call at Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Carl was born Nov. 1, 1922, in Mulvane to Earl Ray Carl and Mary Mildred Wells. On June 7, 1980, he married Troy Sage in Winfield.
An area resident since 1927, he was a farmer.
Survivors include his wife, Troy Carl, Douglass; three sons, Jack Carl Jr., Towanda, Jim Carl, Wichita, and Larry Carl, Douglass; two daughters, Judy Williams, Derby, and Glenda Gulick, Douglass; two sisters, Jeanne Berg, Douglass, and Phyllis Gibbons, Wichita; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Helen Dean

Treva Dringmann
ARKANSAS CITY - Treva M. Dringmann, 89, of Arkansas City, died July 11, 1999, at Medicalodge East in Arkansas City.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Larned Cemetery. The Revs. Jerald Hooley and Adelia Hooley and Dr. Richard Reed will officiate.
A memorial has been established with Medicalodge East. Contributions may be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.
Dringmann was born Jan. 29, 1910, in Larned, to Harry L. and Mary L. (Hunsley) Shady.
On Sept. 17, 1927, she married Lester M. Clark in Pratt. They made their home in Larned until his death in 1962.
In October 1964 she married Fred Dringmann. He died in 1977.
A homemaker, Dringmann was a member of the First Christian Church of Larned and the Eagles Auxiliary of Great Bend.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ann Hooley and Sarah Jane Groh, both of Arkansas City; a stepson, LeRoy Dringmann, Great Bend; two stepdaughters, Velma Jean Clark, Casper, Wyo., and Ruth Basgall, Larned; 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and many stepgrandchildren.
A son, Merele Clark, and a daughter, Ima Leta Doggett, preceded her in death.
