Fay Buss
WELLINGTON - Fay I. Buss, 89, of Wellington, died Aug. 16, 1999, at her home.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Oliver-Hawks Funeral Home in Oxford. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 9 a.m. to service time.
A memorial has been established with the First Christian Church of Oxford.
Buss was born March 1, 1910, to Merton and Molly (Teter) Patterson. When she was three years old, the family moved to a farm south of Oxford. She attended Jenkins rural school and graduated from Oxford High School in 1928. In high school she was captain of the girls' basketball team.
On Feb. 3, 1929, she married Gerald W. Buss at her family's home. The Busses lived in Abilene, Wellington, Oxford, Iola, Winfield and Weslaco, Texas.
She was a member of the Christian Church in Iola and Oxford, serving 25 years in the choir, as deaconess and as substitute organist.
Survivors include her husband, Gerald Buss, Wellington; a son, Darrell D. Buss, Iola; a daughter, Patty Kinyon, Wellington; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Robert Stone
EUREKA - Robert F. "Bob" Stone, 77, of Eureka, formerly of Howard, died Aug. 16, 1999, at Greenwood County Hospital.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Campbell-Kelley Funeral Home in Eureka. The Rev. Jim Bush will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Rites will be conducted by Fidelity Lodge 106 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2712.
A memorial has been established with the Greenwood County Hospital. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Stone was born Sept. 19, 1921, in Howard, to Forest and Minnie (Clayton) Stone. The family moved to Eureka when he was an infant, and he graduated from Eureka High School.
In 1942 Stones entered the United States Army and served as an infantryman in World War II in the European Theater and the Philippines. Following his discharge in 1946, he returned to Eureka and for a short time worked on a pipeline in Kentucky.
On May 31, 1958, he married Clara Swayne in Miami, Okla. They made their home in Eureka where he was self-employed for over 50 years as the owner of an auto repair garage, car wash, salvage yard and used car dealership.
Stone was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Fidelity Lodge 106 Ancient Free & Accepted Masons, Queen Bess Chapter 56 Order of Eastern Star and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2712, all of Eureka.
Survivors include his wife, Clara Stone, Eureka; two sons, Randy Stone, Ann Arbor, Mich., and Rick Stone, Wichita; and five grandchildren.
Veda Mullin
Veda Iris Mullin, 79, of Winfield, formerly of Arkansas City, died Aug. 13, 1999, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Aug. 17 at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home in Arkansas City. Burial will be later in Forest Lawn Cemetery
in West Covina, Calif.
Mullin was born April 25, 1920, in Burden, to Lawrence Wesley and Daisy Diamond (Palmer) Mills. She was raised in Arkansas City and graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1939.
On Nov. 25, 1955, she married John Townsend Mullin.
For many years, she worked as a consulting engineer for the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force in Washington, D.C.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church and Phi Beta Psi sorority. She was a licensed HAM operator and had served as the Southwest director of Girl Scouts of America.
Survivors include a brother, Marvin E. Mills, California; a sister, Joyce C. Barkus, Winfield; a stepdaughter, Barbara Van Heerden, California, and a stepgrandson.
Jim Hinson
ARKANSAS CITY - James L. "Jim" Hinson, 70, of Arkansas City, died Aug. 15, 1999, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
The family has suggested a memorial to Cookson Hills Christian Ministries. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Hinson was born April 5, 1929, in Chicago, to Frank and Florence (Tubbs) Hinson. The family moved to Arkansas City in 1942, and he graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1947. In 1952 he graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in agronomy.
In 1954 he married Irma Wittenborn in Arkansas City, and they had resided in Arkansas City since their marriage.
Hinson was a carpenter, a self-employed builder and an inventor. He designed and built much of the remodeling work at Home National Bank as well as many homes in the area.
Survivors include his wife, Irma Hinson, Arkansas City; two sons, Kent Hinson, Arkansas City, and Gary Hinson, Conway, Ark.; a daughter, Lois Baier, Abilene; two brothers, Bob Hinson, Bertrand, Neb., and Paul Hinson, Canon City, Colo.; a sister, Joanne Maxson, Ponca City; and nine grandchildren.
Ellen Hermanson
GEUDA SPRINGS - Ellen F. Hermanson, 66, of Geuda Springs, died Aug. 14, 1999, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center in Arkansas City.
No service will be held. Cremation has been effected. Hawks Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Hermanson was born Oct. 27, 1932, in Wichita, to Daniel and Ellen Morris. She attended college in San Diego. After living in California for nearly 30 years, she moved to Las Vegas. In 1993 she moved to Geuda Springs.
In 1984 she married Gordon Hermanson in Mexico.
Hermanson attended the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Imperial Beach, Calif., and Arkansas City.
Survivors include two sons, Daniel Parks, Tonkawa, Okla., and Kevin Parks, Geuda Springs; a daughter, Lynda Parks, Arkansas City; a stepdaughter, Sandy Parks, Grand Junction, Colo.; and seven grandchildren.
A son, James Parks, preceded her in death.
John Maendele
John Maendele, 84, of 410 W. 15th, Winfield, died Aug 12, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Private services will be held later. Cremation has taken place. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Maendele was born Aug. 30, 1914, in Marysville, to Harry E. and Maude (Harrison) Maendele.
On Aug. 14, 1937, he married Virginia Irene Harsh in Marysville. They resided in Marysville throughout their marriage. His wife died Aug. 19, 1977.
Maendele worked for Union Pacific Railroad for 34 years and was a member of the union.
Survivors include two sons, James Maendele, Effingham, and John Maendele II, Frontenac; a daughter, Marilyn "Jeane" Maendele, Winfield; two brothers, Forest Maendele, Marysville, and Jerry Maendele, Topeka; and three sisters, Bettie Oehm and Joann Clowe, both of Marysvile, and Lucille Williams, Iowa.
Dominick Cantu
Dominick Abram Cantu, 11-month-old son of Jose' Luis Cantu DeLeon and Elizabeth "Libby" Cantu, of 1616 Simpson, Winfield, died Aug. 17, 1999, at his home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Name Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Dominick was born Aug. 23, 1998, in Winfield.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, David Jacob Cantu, and three sisters, Katherine Elizabeth Cantu, Gabriela Elisa Cantu and Bethany Christine Cantu, all of Winfield; and his grandparents, Mary Kent, Winfield, and Juan and Margarita Cantu DeLeon, Monterrey, Mexico.
Spencer McDowell
ARKANSAS CITY - Spencer Alec McDowell, son of George and Heidi McDowell of Arkansas City, was stillborn Aug. 9, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Riverview Cemetery. Jesse A. Kindred will officiate. Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by three brothers, his twin, Hunter Dylan McDowell, Mason Alexander McDowell and Zachary Chase McDowell; two sisters, Jordan Elizabeth McDowell and Madison Lauren McDowell; and his grandparents, Bob and Renate Jordan and Jim and Sherry McDowell, all of Arkansas City.
Marie Kidwell
Marie Lucy Kidwell, 95, of Winfield, formerly of Topeka, died Aug. 18, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Aug. 19 in Mount Hope Cemetery
at Topeka. Newcomer Family Funeral Home of Topeka was in charge of arrangements.
Kidwell was born May 15, 1904, in Everett, Wash., to Shannon and Elizabeth O'Dell. At the age of nine she was adopted by Ray and Winnie Pfoutz and raised in Ottawa.
She married Virgil McKinney who preceded her in death.
Her second husband, Paul Kidwell, also preceded her in death.
In 1952 Kidwell became a licensed practical nurse and worked several years at St. Francis Hospital and Security Benefit Association Hospital, both in Topeka. She also worked at Ransom Hospital in Ottawa.
The Kidwells traveled between their homes in Osage City and the Rio Grande Valley in Texas during their retirement.
She was a longtime member of Presbyterian Women.
Survivors include a daughter, Marilee Emerson, Winfield; four grandchildren and a stepgranddaughter.
Lloyd Lively
Lloyd Lively, 75, of 621 Menor, Winfield, died Aug. 18, 1999, at his home.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Memorial Chapel. Private inurnment will follow in Highland Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 10.
A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Lively was born Aug. 19, 1923, in rural Winfield, to Benjamin and Catherine (Scott) Lively. He attended Winfield schools. During World war II, he served in the U.S. Army.
On April 27, 1949, he married Mary Elizabeth Shriver in Wichita.
A cement finisher for over 40 years, he retired from Kuist Construction in Wichita in 1965.
Lively was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544 and American Legion Post 10, both of Winfield.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Lively, Winfield; two sons, Calvin Berry, Winfield, and Howard Berry, Wichita; a daughter, Donna Irvin, Winfield; two sisters, Grace Carlton, Wichita, and Mable Huff, Winfield; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
