Jeffrey Orand

Services for Jeffrey Dean Orand, 38, who died Aug. 21, 1999, were held at 2 p.m. Aug. 24 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. Chaplains Cecil Lilliston and Larry Anderson officiated. Burial was in New Salem Cemetery.

Casket bearers were Butch Bailey, Bill Ball, Lowell Fiscus, Vince Gonzales, Kevin Harris and Darren Hibbs.

Memorials have been established with the Kansas Foundation for the Blind, the American Kidney Foundation and the American Diabetes Association.

Mary Cadwell

A memorial service for Mary Cadwell, 76, who died Aug. 22, 1999, was held at 11 a.m. Aug. 25 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. Evangelist Donald Moore officiated, and Daylene Morrell was the pianist.

A private burial will be held later in Memorial Lawn Cemetery at Arkansas City.

Honorary casket bearers were Kathleen Hoyle, Margaret Kittelson, Abelle McCaslin, Bryan Morrell, Cecil Morrell, Dale Morrell, Daylene Morrell, Karen Morrell, Marion Northeast, Marjorie Morrell, Matthew Morrell, Noble Morrell Jr., Noble Morrell Sr. and Robert Northeast.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc.

Viola McConnell

Services for Viola McConnell, 88, who died Aug. 18, 1999, were held at 2 p.m. Aug. 21 in Highland Cemetery. The Rev. David Mitchell officiated.

Casket bearers were John Boyle, Vicki Boyle, Deb Bennett, Randy White, Brenda White, Ron Smith, Ken McConnell, Pam McConnell, Kathy Golubske and Nick Golubske.

A memorial has been established with the Arthritis Foundation Kansas Chapter, 1602 E. Waterman, Wichita, KS 67211-1878.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Grace Sanders

Services for Grace Alma Sanders, 89, who died Aug. 21, 1999, were held at 2 p.m. Aug. 25 in Highland Cemetery. The Rev. Gerald Graber officiated.

A memorial has been established with the American Lung Association.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

William Mayo

William "Roy" Mayo, 73, of 613 E. 14th, Winfield, died Aug. 25, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Military services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service until 9 tonight.

A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Mayo was born Sept. 4, 1925, in Winfield, to Loyal and Stella Violet (Riley) Mayo. Raised in Winfield, he attended Winfield High School and entered the United States Navy in July 1942.

Mayo served in the Navy during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was involved in seven major battles during World War II and received numerous medals and ribbons for service during all three wars. He retired from the Navy in 1975 following 33 years of service.

He was later employed by the Winfield Fire Department.

Survivors include two daughters, Judy Kraus, Oak Hill, Va., and Janice Grandy, Dallas; a brother, Charles Mayo, Wichita; and four grandchildren.

William Cleary

PAOLA - Dr. William R. Cleary, 65, of Paola, formerly of Burden, died Aug. 24, 1999, at his home.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Paola United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Fort Gibson National Cemetery, Fort Gibson, Okla.

Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Wilson & Son Funeral Home in Paola.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Paola High School Endowment Fund or the Lyndon Endowment Fund, c/o Wilson and Son Funeral Home, 305 N. Pearl, Paola, KS 66071.

Cleary was born Sept. 24, 1933, in Okay, Okla., to William R. and Teressa (Bird) Cleary. He graduated from Okay High School and attended college at Muskogee, Okla.

He then served in the United States Army as a military policeman for three years. He was later chosen to serve at Shape Headquarters in Versailles, Paris, France. While in the service, he coached a European basketball team.

After his discharge from the Army, Cleary continued his education and eventually received his doctorate in education from Central University of Oklahoma.

He taught and coached at Offerle; Minneola; Harrah, Okla., and Wichita. He then worked as an administrator at Central High School in Burden and Augusta High School. He was superintendent of the Paola school district for 16 years before his retirement five years ago.

After his retirement, Cleray became interim superintendent of the Lyndon school district where he was employed at the time of his death.

Cleary had served on the advisory board of the State Department of Education and was on the committee that developed law-related curriculum for Kansas public schools. He served on the advisory board for TRI-CO and many positions in the Lions Club. He was a member of the Academy of Fellows, IDEA Institute, the Ancient Order of Free and Accepted Masons and the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Cleary, Paola; a son, Rick Cleary, Broken Arrow, Okla.; a brother, Robert "Bud" Cleary, Muskogee, Okla.; a sister, Clara Mehl, Bentonville, Ark.; and a granddaughter.

Flossie Hunt

BELLE PLAINE - Flossie Beatrice Hunt, 97, of Belle Plaine, died Aug. 26, 1999, at Riverview Manor in Oxford.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Belle Plaine United Methodist Church. The Revs. Andy Torres and Kendal Utt will officiate. Burial will be in Belle Plaine Cemetery. Music will include Hunt's favorite hymn, "Count Your Blessings." Darlene Poage will be the organist.

Honorary casket bearers will be members of the Stitch and Chatter Club, and casket bearers will be her 14 grandchildren.

Friends may call at Hatfield-Smith Funeral Home from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to noon Monday. The family will be present Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial gifts to the Belle Plaine Museum Fund may be sent to: Belle Plaine Community Foundation, c/o Flossie Hunt Memorial, Belle Plaine, KS 67013.

Hunt was born April 25, 1902, southwest of Udall, to Artie Oliver and Mary Catherine (Hopson) Skinner. She attended Bushnell Country School and graduated from Udall High School in 1920.

On Nov. 4, 1920, she married Henry Bryan Hunt in Wellington, and they lived northwest of Belle Plaine. Her husband died April 10, 1971.

Hunt was a homemaker and a cook for the Belle Plaine school district from 1953 to 1972.

She was active in the Belle Plaine United Methodist Church as a Sunday school teacher and member of United Methodist Women. She was also a member of a home demonstration unit and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She was the last surviving charter member of the Stitch and Chatter Club and was on the steering committee of the Sumner County Council on Aging when the Barner Center was established.

Survivors include a son, James Hunt, Belle Plaine; two daughters, Bernice Barlow Wyant, Burlingame, and Barbara Brummett, Belle Plaine; 14 grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, 15 stepgreat-grandchildren and several stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

Edith Walton

UDALL - Edith M. Walton, 85, of Udall, died Aug. 25, 1999, in Wellington.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Udall Congregational Church. Pastor Blake Orr will officiate. Burial will be in Udall Cemetery.

Friends may call at Senter-Smith Mortuary in Mulvane until 8 tonight.

A memorial has been established with the Alzheimer's Association and the American Diabetes Association.

Walton was born March 31, 1914, in Wichita, to Joseph and Melinda (Haines) Metzger.

She married Gerald James Walton in 1930. He preceded her in death.

A homemaker, she was a member of Rural Neighbors and the Udall Cooperettes.

Survivors include two sons, Donald Walton, Udall, and Robert Walton, Harrisburg, Pa.; two daughters, Joeann Rowley and Sharon Howard, both of Udall; a brother, Jack Metzger, Eldon, Mo.; a sister, Edna Edwards, Augusta; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Orland Kolling

Orland W. Kolling, 73, longtime Winfield resident, died Aug. 25, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the First Christian Church. Inurnment will be in Union-Graham Cemetery.

There will be no visitation, but friends may sign the register at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home.

Memorials have been established with the First Christian Church, Southwestern College and Hospice Inc.

Kolling was born March 23, 1926, in Wichita, to Henry and Ernestine (Buckley) Kolling. He was educated in Wichita public schools, graduated with honors from Friends University and earned graduate degrees in chemistry at Washington University and Kansas State University.

In 1948 he married Esther June Shaw in Wichita, and they were married for 43 years.

In 1997 he married Marian Hinson in Winfield.

Kolling worked as a research and development chemist for Mallinckrodt Chemical Co. in St. Louis for five years. He was a member of the science faculty at Friends University from 1955 to 1959 and taught chemistry, physics and geology at Southwestern College from 1959 to 1992. At Southwestern he was the first Oncley Professor of Chemistry and was a Beck Lecturer in science and religion.

After he retired, he was an adjunct instructor in mathematics for Cowley County Community College for five years and continued his research program at Southwestern, Oklahoma State University and New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology.

Kolling was author or co-author of over 100 research publications in the areas of physical and inorganic chemistry as well as monographs on curriculum modeling in higher education.

He was a member of scientific organizations, including the Kansas Academy of Science, American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Chemical Society and Rocky Mountain Chemistry Conference.

Kolling was named a National Science Foundation Fellow at Case Western Reserve University in 1962 and at Kansas State University in 1963-64 and a fellow of the American Institute of Chemists in 1970.

He made many fossil-collecting trips and was an authority on the invertebrate fossils of the Permian and Pennsylvanian rocks of Cowley and Elk counties and plant fossils in the Oligocene shales of the Florrisant Fossil Beds of Colorado.

He was a member of the First Christian Church of Winfield and the Albuquerque Friends Meeting.

Survivors include his wife, Marian Kolling, Winfield; two daughters, Annette Weaver, Columbia, Mo., and Elizabeth Buckley, Albuquerque, N.M.; a brother, Dr. Harold Kolling, Baldwin City; and two grandchildren.
