Velma Jones
NEWTON - Velma E. Jones, 77, of Newton, died Oct. 3, 1999, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Halstead Baptist Church. Pastor Roger Ericksten will officiate. Burial will be in Halstead Cemetery.
Friends may call at Kaufman Funeral Home in Halstead from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
A memorial has been established with the American Diabetes Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Jones was born July 27, 1922, in Iuka, Miss., to Murray B. and Lithia E. (West) Moore.
She married William Lee Jones in 1939 in Tippah County, Miss. He died in 1966.
A homemaker, she attended Halstead Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Lee T. Jones, Oxford, Thomas E. Jones, Halstead, and Stanley Jones, Newton; two daughters, Helen Cagle and Brenda Schultz, both of Newton; four sisters, Christine Murray, Athens, Ala., Josephine Dunn, Marked Tree, Ark., Bobbie Chenowith, Oxford, and Maxine Courtney, Lepanto, Ark.; 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
An infant son, Steven, preceded her in death.
Myrtle Whitson
Myrtle K. Whitson, 91, formerly of 1418 Hackney, Winfield, died Oct. 4, 1999, at Winfield Rest Haven.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Highland Cemetery. The Rev. Rick Thornton will officiate.
Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.
A memorial has been established with Winfield Rest Haven. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Whitson was born Aug. 19, 1908, in Arapahoe, Okla., to George and Anna (Venneberg) Kroth. She graduated from Winfield High School in 1925.
In 1937 she married Robert W. Gordon in Alexandria, Va. He died in 1954. On Dec. 14, 1963, she married Leslie T. Whitson in Winfield. He died Nov. 10, 1992.
After graduating from high school, she moved to Washington, D.C., and worked for the federal government for seven years. After Mr. Gordon's death, she returned to Winfield in 1955 and worked for First National Bank as a secretary before marrying Mr. Whitson and moving to Santa Ana, Calif. They retired and moved to Winfield in 1967.
Whitson was a member of Business and Professional Women and worked as a volunteer at William Newton Memorial Hospital for a number of years.
Survivors include two daughters, Diana Cox, Winfield, and Rhona Avant, Wichita; a stepdaughter, Elsie Baker, Cypress, Calif.; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
John Swisher
John Morris Swisher, 84, of 1330 Wheat Road, Winfield, died Oct. 5, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village.
Services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Miles Funeral Service and 11 a.m. Friday in the Colony cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 7 p.m. Thursday.
A memorial has been established with the Hackney Baptist Youth Fellowship. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Swisher was born Nov. 11, 1914, in Garnett, to Benjamin Perry and Flossie Fern (Sigler) Swisher. He was raised and educated in Leroy.
On Jan. 31, 1942, he married Pauline Stauffer in Iola. They made their first home on a ranch at Silkville, near Ottawa. Swisher also worked on farms and ranches at Westmoreland, Ottawa and Colony and a railroad section gang at Leroy and Garnett.
The Swishers moved to Winfield in 1956. He worked as a yard manager for Smith and Moon Steel Co. at Strother Field until his retirement in 1976.
His wife died Dec. 1, 1997.
Swisher played softball until he was 65. He had been a leader of the Pleasant Valley 4-H Club and was a volunteer for Meals On Wheels. He was a member of the Flirts and Skirts Square Dancers and Hackney Community Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, John Raymond Swisher, Lafayette, Ind., and Benjamin "Benny" Harris Swisher, Winfield; a daughter, Mary Edith Foster, Winfield; a brother, Charles E. Swisher, Ellington, Mo.; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, one stepgrandson and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
Lura Hedges
MOLINE - Lura Opal Hedges, 90, longtime resident of Longton, died Oct. 4, 1999, at Elk Manor Nursing Home in Moline.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Longton Cemetery. Bishop W. Don Cragun will officiate.
A memorial has been established with the Longton Senior Citizens. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
Hedges was born July 6, 1909, at Elk City, to John and Minnie Williams.
On May 30, 1929, she married Robert Stark in Tucson, Ariz. He died in 1970.
She was employed at Tucson Medical Center for many years.
In 1971 she moved to Longton and was employed by Colonial Lodge in Independence until her retirement in 1985.
In 1988 she married Jean Robin Hedges. The marriage ended a few years later.
She was a longtime member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of Independence.
Survivors include a nephew, Jim Fairbanks, Bloomington, Ill.; a niece, Ellen Klotz, Brandywine, Md.; and a sister-in-law, Betty Williams, Longton.
Jennifer Norris
DEXTER - Services for Jennifer Nicole Norris, 20, who died Sept. 27, 1999, were held at 2 p.m. Oct. 1 in the Dexter school gymnasium. Dr. Stanley Upchurch and the Rev. Dane Massey officiated. Burial was in Cedar Vale Cemetery.
Pianist Evalyn Upchurch played "His Eye Is on the Sparrow." Other selections included "In the Arms of the Angels" performed by Sarah McLachlan and "Electric Light Parade" by Bach. Congregational hymns were "Amazing Grace" and "It Is Well With My Soul."
Casket bearers were Alan, Chris, Eric, Jack and Tom Norris, Harold James Pettigrew Jr., Jamey and Stephen Pettigrew, Steve Powell and Ron Slaven.
Memorial contributions may be made to Martin Luther Homes of Kansas or for scholarships in music, writing and social work at Cowley County Community College and Kansas State University.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Ernest Callison
Ernest H. Callison, 85, of 716 N. Tweed, Winfield, died Oct. 5, 1999, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Central Baptist Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may visit until 9 tonight at Miles Funeral Service.
A memorial has been established with the Central Baptist Church Steeple Building Fund. Contributions may be made at the church or funeral home.
Callison was born Dec. 30, 1913, near Norwich, to Henry H. and Martha P. (Ellis) Callison. He was educated in Norwich schools and graduated from Norwich High School in 1931. He attended Southwestern College.
On June 20, 1937, he married Ruby F. Daniel in Winfield.
During World War II, Callison served in the United States Army from 1944 to 1946. He saw action in the North Pacific during both the Okinawa and Iwo Jima landings.
Callison drove a bus for the Winfield Bus Service for several years and worked as a postal clerk for the Winfield Post Office. From 1953 to 1971 he was a contractor for Callison Builders, constructing over 300 Winfield area homes.
In 1971 the Callisons moved to Edmond, Okla., and he was employed with the Federal Home Administration in Oklahoma City until his retirement in 1978. The Callisons then moved to Wichita where he continued working as a fee appraiser for the FHA and other independent offices.
The couple returned to Winfield and had resided at Cumbernauld Village since 1989.
He was known for his gardening and woodworking and was a member of Central Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby Callison, Winfield; three sons, Keith Callison, Wichita, Norman Callison, Winfield, and Danny Callison, Bloomington, Ind.; a sister, Helen Lowrey, Winfield; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Danny Smith
Danny R. Smith, 62, of Route 2, Winfield, died Oct. 5, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church. The Revs. Ted Brown, John Stone and Kendall Utt will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Nursery care will be available.

Smith was born Dec. 1, 1936, in Blackwell, Okla., to Earl T. and Martha Pearl (Curry) Smith. He attended schools in Blackwell and Belle Plaine. From 1955 to 1957 he served in the U.S. Army, including 18 months in Europe.
On Oct. 18, 1957, he married Carol Ann Burgess in Wellington.
While residing in Belle Plaine, Smith worked for Beech Aircraft from 1957 to 1967. He then took over the bulk gas service from Paul Sanders. In 1974 Amoco transferred him to Winfield. He later became owner of Smith Oil and Big "D" Oil Co. which he operated until his death. He also worked in oil exploration and the manufacturing of used oil and waste products.
Smith was a member of Belle Plaine Masonic Lodge 173, Wichita Consistory and Hackney Community Baptist Church where he served as a trustee and deacon.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Ann Smith, Winfield; three daughters, Danna Gowdy, Arkansas City, and Cheryl Brock and Andrea Smith, both of Winfield; a brother, Joe Smith, Quitman, Ga.; a sister, Phyrne Kingsley, Tulsa; and eight grandchildren.
Linda Faber
Linda K. Faber, 53, homemaker, of 420 Broad, Winfield, died Oct. 7, 1999, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Danny Ginn will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery
in rural Winfield.
Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 tonight.

Faber was born Feb. 22, 1946, in Winfield, to Merle and Thelma (Hostetter) Rhodes. She attended Winfield schools and graduated from Winfield High School in 1964.
On Dec. 18, 1966, she married Ray Faber in New Salem.
Survivors include her husband, Ray Faber, and a daughter, Sheryl Metz, both of Winfield; her father, Merle Rhodes, New Salem; a sister, Eva Runyan, Winfield; and two grandchildren.
