Eugene Crandall

TOPEKA - Eugene L. "Gene" Crandall, 75, died Oct. 7, 1999, in a Topeka nursing home.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in Mount Hope Cemetery in Topeka.

Visitation will be from noon and 9 p.m. Sunday at Davidson Funeral Home in Topeka.

A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society. Contributions can be sent to the funeral home at 1035 N. Kansas, Topeka, KS 66608.

Crandall was born Dec. 21, 1923, in Centralia, to William C. and Lela M. (Lightbody) Crandall. He graduated from Corning High School and the University of Kansas.

Crandall served in the Army Air Force during World War II as a tail gunner on a B-24 aircraft.

Crandall had resided in Topeka since 1950. He owned and operated Accounting and Business Services in Topeka and was a member of American Legion Capital Post 1.

Survivors include two cousins, Ronald W. Crandall, Topeka, and Beth Meers, Junction City.

Mary Lou Wright

Services for Mary Lou Wright, 72, who died Oct. 1, 1999, were held at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 7 at Grandview United Methodist Church. The Revs. Connie Wooldridge and Ticia Bennett officiated. Burial was in Wilmot Cemetery.

Vocal music included "Warren and Mary Lou" performed by Kathy Enoch and "Wind Beneath My Wings" performed by David Watters. Rose Marie Watt was the organist.

Casket bearers were Bob Collyar, Jack Kelsey, Joe Kendrick, Bill Miller, John Rogers and Bob Winn.

Memorials have been established with Grandview United Methodist Church and St. Paul's United Methodist Church of Arkansas City.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

John Swisher

Services for John Morris Swisher, 84, who died Oct. 5, 1999, were held at 7 p.m. Oct. 7 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Ted Brown officiated.

Vocal music included "How Great Thou Art" and "The Old Rugged Cross."

Burial was in Colony Cemetery at 11 a.m. Oct. 8 with Howard Rieter officiating.

Honorary casket bearers were Marvin Hostetter, Gene Conrod, Rick Reynolds, Claude Goodnight, Truman Woods, Harold Muret, Vollie Priest, Wayne Othick, Ken Jackson, Don Filbert and John Reynolds.

Casket bearers were Swisher's grandchildren, Terri Browning, Michael Swisher, Rusty Swisher, Cynthia Foster, Rechelle Foster, Vernan Stout, Freddy Swisher, Paul Swisher and Bobby Stout.

A memorial has been established with the Hackney Community Baptist Church Youth Fellowship.

Shorty Bonfy

Quay T. "Shorty" Bonfy, 92, of Winfield, died Oct. 9, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Ralston, Okla. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Ralston, under the direction of Miles Funeral Service. Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight.

Memorial contributions can be made in his name to the Calder Bonfy Memorial at Cowley County Community College through the funeral home.

Born March 29, 1907 at Skedee, Okla., Bonfy was a son of Bert and Pearl (Horne) Bonfy. He attended country and Skedee schools.

On Oct. 23, 1930, he married Margie M. Teichmer at Skedee, and the couple lived and farmed in the Skedee area for several years.

In 1937, the Bonfys moved to Ponca City to serve in the 101 Ranch Resettlement Project. They lived and worked on a farm located within the boundaries of the original 101 Ranch for over 50 years.

Following retirement, they moved to Winfield in 1992. His wife died Dec. 28, 1996.

Bonfy was a member of the 101 Truck Growers Association, Farmers Union, Ranch Drive Co-op and Association of American Retired People.

Survivors include a daughter, Wilma Roady, Winfield; two sons, Dick Bonfy, Winfield, and Buddy Bonfy, Albert Lea, Minn.; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Melvin Clinkingbeard

BLACKWELL, Okla. - Melvin Clinkingbeard, 68, of Blackwell, formerly of Winfield, died Oct. 10, 1999, at the hospital in Buffalo, Okla.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Blackwell City Cemetery with Rev. Wayne Bookout officiating. Hackler Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Clinkingbeard was born July 5, 1931, in Kansas City, Mo., to George Samuel and Lucille "Dolly" (Dockery) Clinkingbeard. He attended Blackwell schools.

He worked for the City of Winfield in the Sanitation Department for many years.

Survivors include four daughters, Judy Treaster, Wellington, and Mary, Marie and Polly Clinkingbeard, all of Texas; three sons, Ronald Clinkingbeard, Wellington, Richard Clinkingbeard, Texas, and Charles Clinkingbeard, Blackwell; a brother, Lawrence Clinkingbeard, Aurora, Mo.; three sisters, Elnora Calkins, Pueblo, Colo., and Marie Snow and Clara Mae Glormley, both of Blackwell; and many grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Clinkingbeard.

Zorene Thompson

HOWARD - Mary Zorene Thompson, 79, of Howard Twilight Manor, died Oct. 10, 1999, at Fredonia Regional Hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Howard Twilight Manor with Pastor Robin Haines officiating. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with Howard Twilight Manor. Contributions can be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home.

Thompson was born March 1, 1920, at Clay Center to Joseph Oscar and Mary Ruby (Scott) Thompson. She attended school in Clay Center.

Disabled since birth, Thompson lived with her mother for many years. After her mother's death in 1962, she moved to Fall River. She had resided at Howard Twilight Manor since 1977.

There are no immediate survivors.

Bob Smith

ROCK - Robert D. "Bob" Smith, 62, of Route 1, Rock, died Oct. 11, 1999, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will be in Douglass Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Thursday.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc. Contributions may be made at the funeral home.

Smith was born May 6, 1937, at Furley, to Robert L. and Clara (Reynolds) Smith. He attended Douglass schools and graduated from Douglass High School.

On Jan. 3, 1984, he married Shirley Henry, and they lived at Rock. Smith had been employed by Raytheon Corp. in Wichita for over 30 years.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Smith, Rock; two daughters, Dee Dee Partee, Mountain Home, Ark., and Kathy Mora, Arkansas City; two stepdaughters; Jerri Palmer and Lora Landis, both of Ozark, Mo.; his father, Robert "Buck" Smith, and a brother, Donnie Smith, both of Rock; a sister, Carol Smith-Foy, Arkansas City; seven grandchildren and three stepgrandchildren.

Claude Adams

Claude H. "Hap" Adams, 92, longtime resident of Winfield, died Oct. 8, 1999 at Walnut Hill Nursing Center.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Highland Cemetery. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Adams was born Dec. 19, 1906, in Kansas City, Mo., to LeRoy and Temple (Quincy) Adams. He moved to the Winfield area as a youth and attended Bryant Elementary School.

Adams was a longtime employee of Santa Fe Railway. Following retirement he was employed at Joe Collins Buick-Rambler dealership and later at Bodkins Motors Inc., both in Winfield.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Jewell Adams, Wichita; two nieces, Kathryn Adams, Wichita, and Karen Greenburg, Assonet, Mass.; and his guardian, Willard Bodkins, Winfield.

Linda Faber

Services for Linda K. Faber, 53, who died Oct. 7, 1999, were held at 10 a.m. Oct. 9 in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Danny Ginn officiated. Burial was in Mount Vernon Cemetery.

Music selections included "Holes in the Floor of Heaven," "Love of My Life," and "Go Rest High on That Mountain." Casket bearers were Marvin, Keith and Dale Hostetter, Larry and Roger Rhodes and Larry and Ron Samms.

Memorials have been established with William Newton Memorial Hospital and the Kansas Cancer Center.

Jim Watson

Ralph James "Jim" Watson, 88, of 1320 Wheat Road, Winfield, died Oct. 11, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

A memorial has been established with the Good Samaritan Village. Contributions may be made at the funeral home.

Born Sept. 28, 1911, in Dale, Watson was a son of Harry A. and Mattie E. (Hill) Watson. He received his education in Winfield schools.

On Dec. 24, 1931, he married Macel Marcella Norris in Wellington, and they resided in Winfield. He worked for Wakefield Oil Co. in the 1940s. In the early 1950s, he and his partners, Joe Everly and Ben Grallap, formed Watson Drilling Co. He retired in the mid-1970s and farmed and ranched north of Winfield until the early 1990s.

His wife died July 14, 1983.

Survivors include his son, James Watson, Ponca City; two brothers, Pearl A. Watson, Winfield, and Arthur Watson, California; three sisters, Helen Wise, Udall, Jane Conley, Holcomb, and Harriett Watson, Winfield; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
