LONG, Anna Lorene Long, 73, Atchison, KS passed away November 1, 2004 at Medicalodge of Atchison.

Graveside services will be 3:30 PM Wednesday, November 3, 2004 at Sunset Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 2:00-3:00 PM Wednesday at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Long was born March 14, 1931 in Neosho, MO the daughter of William and Sarah Melinda “Linnie” (Moore) Carterman. She attended Midway Schools in Missouri. She was a past member of Carol Baptist Church, and she worked for Hudson Oil Company and later Fisca Oil. She enjoyed gardening and loved she her family.

She married Bobby Long on March 14, 1950. He preceded her in death on December 27, 1982. She is also preceded in death by 2 sons David Leroy and Jerry E. Long. Brothers Burley, BJ and Loren Carterman, sisters Goldie Clouse and Elzie Carterman and her parents.

Survivors include her son Wayne Long of Leavenworth; and brother Troy Carterman of Granby, MO and a host of other family.

CHRISTIAN, Kathryn Bertha Christian, 86 years old, of Atchison, Ks. died Sunday, October 24, 2004 at the Cray Senior Manor, Atchison, KS.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, October 26th, 2004 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Joseph Hansen, Pastor of the Carol Baptist Church Officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memory Gardens, Atchison, KS. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 PM on Monday, Oct. 25th, 2004 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Atchison, Ks. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Carol Baptist Church, Atchison Hospice, or for Project Concern.

Kathryn B. Chapman was born on October 23, 1918 in Atchison, KS., the daughter of Wiley and Laura (Freeman) Chapman. She attended Sunnyside grade school and did sewing for Saunders MFG for over 20 years. She was a member of the Willing Workers Club, Atchison, and enjoyed fishing, sewing and making quilts for family and friends.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Charles and Mary Christian, Atchison, KS., two daughters, Bertha and her husband Terry McKinney, Atchison, and Opal and her husband LeRoy Jamvold, Troy, KS., a sister; Mrs. Erma Ellyson, El Paso, TX.,, ten grandchildren, and eighteen great grandchildren. Her parents, two brothers and four sisters preceded her in death.

COLBY, Walter A. Colby, 45, Everest, KS died Saturday, October 23, 2004 in an auto accident 3 miles south of Effingham.

Memorial services will be 7:00 PM Tuesday, October 26, 2004 at O’Trimble Funeral Home, Effingham, KS with The Rev. Jeff Cochran officiating. Visitation will follow until 8:30 PM. The body has been cremated. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association and left in care of O’Trimble Funeral Home.

Mr. Colby was born October 3, 1959 in Bucksport, Maine, the son of Russell and Barbara (Dunham) Colby. He attended school in Groveland, FL and moved to the Everest area in 1985. He had worked for Mo-Kan Concrete and was currently employed with Meiers Concrete. Walter enjoyed being outdoors, hunting and karaoke.

Mr. Colby was preceded in death by his father Russell Colby, Sr. in 1998 and an infant brother Milford.

Survivors include his mother Barbara Colby of Auborndale, FL; brothers, Wilford Colby of Auborndale, FL, Steve Colby of Lakeland, FL, Russell Colby, Jr. of Auborndale, FL and Daniel Colby of Effingham, KS. A sister Diane Bonds of Atchison, KS. 4 nieces and 1 nephew.

DORSSOM, Virginia Ruth Dorssom, 85, of Lancaster, KS, died Wednesday, October 20, 2004 at the Atchison Hospital in Atchison, KS.

Mrs. Dorssom was cremated. Memorial Services will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, October 30, 2004 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lancaster, KS with Rev. Jane Rothman, officiating. Inurnment will be in the Lancaster Cemetery, Lancaster, KS. Family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until time of services, Saturday, at the church in Lancaster. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers are suggested to St. John’s Lutheran Church and may be sent to the funeral home. The Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, 800 Kansas Ave., Atchison, KS 66002 is in charge of the arrangements.

Virginia Ruth Alban was born March 3, 1919 in Winifred, KS, the daughter of Charles and Lillian (Trial) Alban. She graduated from Huron High School in Huron, KS. Virginia was a homemaker and member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lancaster, KS and an active member of church and community circles. She enjoyed reading; quilt making; all sports, especially baseball; and apple pie.

Virginia and Charles D. Dorssom were married on March 18, 1938 in Syracuse, NE. He preceded her in death on June 23, 1995. She was also preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Charles, Paul and Wayne Alban; one sister, Mary Hudson; and one grandson, Steven Dorssom.

She is survived by five sons and their spouses, Harold and LouAnn Dorssom of Marysville, KS, Robert and Floretta Dorssom of Lancaster, David and Dyna Dorssom of Warrensburg, MO, Steven and Joyce Dorssom of Shawnee, KS and James and Martha Dorssom of Lecompton, KS; one daughter, Mary Dorssom of Lancaster; one brother, Bob Alban of Springfield, OR; eighteen grandchildren; and nineteen great grandchildren.

McBRATNEY, Arthur L. McBratney, 99 years old, of Atchison, KS. died Wednesday, Oct. 20th, 2004 at the Atchison Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, Oct. 25th, 2004 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Valerian Ahles officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Atchison, KS. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 PM on Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. The body will be moved to the church one hour prior to services on Monday. Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Mr. McBratney was born on October 8, 1905 in Centralia, KS., the son of Edwin and Rosa Nell (Cox) McBratney. He started school in Centralia, KS. before moving to Atchison in 1914. He attended Washington grade school, graduated from Ingalls High School, Atchison, and attended Emporia College for one year. He went to play semi-pro basketball in Chicago for a short time. Mr. McBratney had worked in several different places during his long life; they include Atchison Leather Products, the former L.F.M. Foundry, Kottman Upholstery, and Blish-Mize. Mr. McBratney worked for many years at Blish-Mize as a shipping clerk, and supervisor of the gunroom. He retired in 1975. Mr. McBratney was a member of the St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, had served in the National Guard, was a Boy Scout leader for Troop 91, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church for many years, and Refereed football games. He enjoyed bowling, was a member of the Men’s Bowling Association. He enjoyed softball, baseball, fishing, and especially gardening, raising flowers, and woodworking.

Mr. McBratney was married to Hazel Bock on December 7, 1929 in Lakevilla, ILL., She preceded him in death on January 1, 1997. His parents, a son Edwin McBratney,(11-2-1996), brother Frank McBratney, (1997) and a sister, Ruth Smith also preceded him in death.

Survivors include; two daughters; Mrs. Joan Grieco, Houston, TX., and Mrs. Rae Alexander, Atchison, KS., twelve grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren.

ROBINSON, Thelma J. Robinson, 77, Atchison, KS passed away Monday, October 18, 2004 at Atchison Hospital following a battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be 8:00 PM Tuesday, October 19, 2004 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with The Rev. Doug Williams officiating. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 PM Tuesday at the funeral home. Graveside services will be 11:30 AM Wednesday, October 20, 2004 at Downs Cemetery, Downs, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be made to NEK Multi County Home Health and left in care of the funeral home.

Mrs. Robinson was born June 13, 1927 in Sidney, Nebraska, the daughter of Edwin Elmer and Helen Mae (Willis) Hoisapple. She attended the Atchison Schools. She was a homemaker and was a member of the United Methodist Church in Atchison. She enjoyed playing Bingo, helping with monthly lunches at Santa Fe Place Apts., and especially spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was an avid watcher of TV Soaps.

She married Floyd L. Robinson on December 17, 1955 at the United Methodist Church, Atchison. He preceded her in death on May 8, 1992. She was also preceded in death by her parents and sister Bea Friday and Dorthy Bussell.

She is survived by her sons Daryl and his wife Sherri Hoisapple of Bellevue, NE; and Floyd and his wife Belinda Robinson of Atchison. Daughters Gail and her husband Mike Purcell of Atchison and Susan Mae and her husband Dennis Draper of Atchison. Nine grandchildren whom she adored, Jason Purcell, Jodi Purcell, Joanie Sinclair, Jennie Fuhrman, Miranda Robinson, Kayla Brummer, Nichole Brummer, Eric Hoisapple and Kelly Hoisapple.

LAURIE, John “ Jack” Laurie, III, 55 years old, of Atchison, KS., died as a result of an automobile accident on I-29, seven miles south of Mound City, MO. on Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, Oct. 18th, 2004 at the Maur Hill – Mount Academy Gymnasium, with Abbot Barnabus Senecal, OSB officiating. The body has been cremated and private family interment of the cremated remains will be at a later date. The family will receive friends from 5:30 PM until 8:30 PM on Sunday, Oct. 17th, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, KS.. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Lightning Strike and Electric Shock Survivors International, Inc. or for the Benedictine Raven Football and may be sent to the funeral home.

John “ Jack” Laurie, III was born on June 21, 1949 in Atchison, Ks. the son of John and Lois (Wood) Laurie, Jr. He attended the Washington grade school, graduated from Atchison High School, where he played football ,basketball, and golf. He graduated from Pittsburg State University with a degree in Physical & Recreational Education. Mr. Laurie worked as a salesman, and then as Regional Sales Manager for the Blish-Mize Company for over 32 years. He had just recently retired this year. Mr. Laurie was a member and served on the Board of Directors of the Bellevue County Club, Atchison, was a member of the Sunflower Hills County Club, Bonner Springs, KS.. He was a member of the Lighting Strike & Electric Shock Survivors International, Inc, after being struck by lighting at his home seven years ago. He was a member of the Reynolds Coffee Club, the Raven Tailgaters Club, was an avid Benedictine Raven Football Fan, and a member of the American Association of Alpaca Breeders. Mr. Laurie was an avid golfer, having won many golfing awards, enjoyed hunting, and had started a new career of being an Alpaca rancher. He loved working his Labrador retriever, Hummer who was also killed in the automobile accident.

Jack was married to Courtney Mize on July 31, 1971 at the Trinity Episcopal Church, Atchison, KS. Courtney survives of the home. Additional survivors include a son, Jack Laurie, Jr, Atchison KS., a daughter, Katie Laurie, Denver, CO., his father, John Laurie, Jr., Atchison, a brother, Lance Laurie, Atchison, KS., a sister, Lynne Laurie Gates, Beloit, KS., and several nieces and nephews. His mother, and one sister preceded him in death.

REID, Evelyn M. Reid, 91, Atchison, KS passed away Saturday, October 9, 2004 at Medicalodge of Atchison.

Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, October 12, 2004 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, KS with the Rev. Lee Hendon officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7:00-8:30 PM Monday at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Humane Society of Atchison, Alzheimer’s Association or The First Christian Church and left in care of the funeral home.

Mrs. Reid was born September 15, 1913 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky the daughter of Jess and Annie (Warren) Mahan. She was a 4-H Leader, member of the Good Intent Women’s Club and Shannon Hill Community Club. She was a member of Wildlife Federation. She enjoyed her birds, gardening and she loved music.

She married Roy A. Reid on May 22, 1932 in Atchison, KS., he preceded her in death on February 2, 2003. She is also preceded in death by her son Paul Reid in 1979, 3 brothers and her parents. Survivors include her son David Reid and his wife Lois of Good Intent Community; daughter June Bullock and her husband Rev. Joseph Bullock of Good Intent Community. 7 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren; brother Larry Epperson of Atchison and several nieces and nephews.
