Victor Walker

Victor M. Walker Sr., 68, of Route 3, Winfield, died Oct. 21, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials have been established with Trinity Lutheran Church and Bible Broadcasting Network. Contributions can be made through the church or funeral home.

Walker was born July 17, 1931, in Winfield, to Doc and Bessie (Irvin) Walker. He worked on various farms as a youth and attended Winfield High School. He later played football for Cowley County Community College, Washburn University and Southwestern College.

On July 31, 1967, he married Gayle A. Korman in Wichita.

Walker was employed by Kansas Neurological Institute and the Boys Industrial School in Topeka; Winfield State Hospital and Training Center and the Winfield Correctional Facility. He retired in 1991. He also owned and operated Viga Construction for several years and a bait shop for 30 years.

Walker had coached youth basketball, football and baseball.

Survivors include his wife, Gayle Walker, and a son, Victor Walker Jr., both of Winfield; two daughters, Bessie L. Walker, Winfield, and Sheila M. Walker, Wichita; a brother, Eugene Walker, Arkansas City; a sister, Jane Bowen, Santa Cruz, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

Dusty Bannister

WELLINGTON - Dustin Alan "Dusty" Bannister, 19, of Wellington, died Oct. 21, 1999.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church with the Rev. Kendale Finley officiating. Friends may call at Frank Funeral Home until 9 p.m. today.

A memorial has been established with the Worden Park Fund.

Bannister was born Aug. 17, 1980, in Wellington, to Les and Jill (Hyter) Bannister.

Survivors include his mother, Jill Bannister, Wellington; his father and stepmother, Les and Susan Bannister, Burden; four brothers, Colby, Chad and Eric Bannister, Wellington, and Lane Bannister, Burden; three sisters, Mindy Bannister, Wellington, and Shelby and Kylie Bannister, Burden; two stepbrothers, Derek and Josh Norris, and one stepsister, Jessica Norris, all of Burden; and his grandparents, Mary Lou Hyter, Wellington, and Robert S. Hyter, Anthony.

Richard Randall

ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. - Richard M. Randall, 39, of Rock Springs, formerly of Winfield, died Oct. 21, 1999, from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Services will be held Tuesday in Rock Springs.

Randall was born Oct. 19, 1960, in Winfield, to Irvin and Janie Randall. He attended Winfield schools and moved to Wyoming after graduating from high school.

Survivors include three daughters, Valarie, Amanda and Sierra Randall, Rock Springs; his parents, Irvin and Janie Randall, Harlingen, Texas; a sister, Catherine Pierce, Winfield; and his twin brother, Randy Randall, Laurel, Md.

Ruth Headrick

EL DORADO - Ruth May Headrick, 95, of El Dorado, died Oct. 24, 1999, at an El Dorado nursing home.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Union Cemetery at Winfield. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Kirby-Morris Funeral Home.

A memorial has been established with Rosalia Christian Church.

Headrick was born Aug. 25, 1904, in Rosalia, to Charles Fredrick and Minnie (Cannon) Correll. She graduated from Rosalia High School and Emporia Teachers College, then taught in Rosalia, Syracuse and Summit, N.J.

On Aug. 20, 1929, she married Luke B. Headrick in Potwin. They attended Columbia University in New York and later taught in Potwin. She obtained a pilot's license in the 1930s.

In 1939 the Headricks moved to El Dorado. She was a member of Rosalia Christian Church and active in various community groups.

Survivors include two sisters, Bertha Morris, Winfield, and Myrtle Weaver, El Dorado; and several nieces and nephews.

Jack Jarrett

DEXTER - Jack L. Jarrett, 68, of Dexter, died Oct. 25, 1999, at Grouse Valley Manor.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church in Winfield. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery west of Winfield.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday.

A memorial has been established with Grouse Valley Manor. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.

Jarrett was born Aug. 25, 1931, in Cherokee County to Henry Loren and Leona (Parsons) Jarrett. He graduated from Columbus High School and attended the College of Emporia, Parsons Junior College and Pittsburg State University before serving with the U.S. Army at Fort Sill, Okla.

On Sept. 20, 1952, he married Eva J. Pitzer at Hepler.

Jarrett received his bachelor's degree in business and his master's degree in education from Pittsburg State in the 1950s.

He taught at Lockwood (Mo.) High School; was a principal in Viola from 1959 to 1965; was superintendent at Central of Burden High School from 1965 to 1967; was supervisor of adult education programs for Cowley County Community College from 1968 to 1970; and was dean of students at Central Business College in Wichita through the mid-1970s.

Jarrett was administrator of special education at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center for 13 years before retiring in 1989 to care for his ailing wife.

His wife died Aug. 5, 1989.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Mariners and Winfield Kiwanis Club. He was a former member of the National Education Association and Kansas Education Association.

Survivors include a son, Stuart Jarrett, Winfield; two daughters, Debra Schmidt, Winfield, and Barbara Chapman, Wichita; two brothers, Jim Jarrett, Littleton, Colo., and Larry Jarrett, address not given; and six grandchildren.

Gertrude Cheek

SALINA - Gertrude A. Cheek, 86, formerly of Winfield, died Oct. 26, 1999, at Ken Wood Manor in Salina.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday in Highland Cemetery at Winfield. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with Sunrise Presbyterian Church in Salina.

Cheek was born June 22, 1913, to John W. and Agnes (Ogilby) Bernaud.

On Nov. 3, 1931, she married Garold L. Cheek in Newkirk, Okla. He died June 26, 1979.

Cheek worked at Boeing during World War II and later in medical records at Snyder Clinic until retiring in 1975.

She moved to Salina in 1991.

Survivors include a sister, Mary Dobbins, LaVerne, Okla.; a niece, Sara Hauser, Salina; and a nephew, Jack Stackhouse, Franklin, Ohio.

Alice Taylor

ARKANSAS CITY - Alice Elizabeth Taylor, 81, of Arkansas City, died Oct. 25, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Private services will be held with Hawks Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Taylor was born April 20, 1918, at Bluejacket, Okla., to Joseph Sherman and Virginia Crecie (Cusic) Wilson.

On Nov. 4, 1933, she married William Alonza Raby in Garfield County, Okla. He died in 1975. Her second husband, Elvin Taylor, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include two daughters, Patsy Finuf and Kay Rector, both of Arkansas City; two sons, William Joseph Raby, Bixby, Okla., and Kenneth James Raby, Ponca City; a sister, Nellie Virginia Coffman, Joplin, Mo.; 13 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Florence Deichman

Florence A. Deichman, 93, formerly of 1608 E. 19th, Winfield, died Oct. 24, 1999, at Winfield Rest Haven.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service with burial in Wilmot Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday.

A memorial has been established with the Atlanta United Methodist Church. Contributions can be made at the church or funeral home.

Deichman was born Aug. 15, 1906, near Atlanta, to Christian H. and Alma (Wadsack) Peterson. She attended Atlanta schools and graduated from Atlanta High School in 1924.

On July 8, 1925, she married Homer F. Deichman in Winfield. They lived and farmed northeast of Atlanta for more than 45 years before moving to Winfield in 1972. Her husband died July 1, 1984.

Deichman had resided at Winfield Rest Haven since 1991.

She was a member of the Atlanta United Methodist Church and served as superintendent for many years.

Survivors include two sons, Loren K. Deichman, Mercedes, Texas, and Olen F. Deichman, Augusta; three grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Billie Thurman

WICHITA - Billie R. Thurman, 79, of Wichita, formerly of Winfield, died Oct. 25, 1999. She was a homemaker.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Resthaven Mortuary Chapel.

Memorials have been established with Dawson United Methodist Church and Hospice Inc.

Survivors include two brothers, Harry "Bud" Peetoom and Carljay Peetoom, both of Arkansas City; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceeded in death by her husband, Thomas Thurman, and a daughter, Karrol Kay Haines.

Opal Biddle

Opal Frances Biddle, 90, of Cumbernauld Village, Winfield, died Oct. 26, 1999, at Cumbernauld Village.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Central Baptist Church with the Rev. Raymond Heltzman officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Vistation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home.

A memorial has been established with William Newton Memorial Hospital's Home Health Care. Contributions can be made at the funeral home.

Biddle was born Feb. 10, 1909, at Hanson to Levi R. and Malissa (Searle) Simmons.

On Aug. 24, 1933, she married Curtis F. Biddle in Braman, Okla. They resided in Braman until 1938 and moved to Winfield in 1948. He preceded her in death March 16, 1981.

Biddle was employed as a cook at several cafes and the snack bar at William Newton Memorial Hospital before retiring.

She was a member of Central Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Phyllis Thurman, Winfield, three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
