Ethelyn McCrabb

Ethelyn J. McCrabb, 92, of Winfield, former resident of Oxford and Ponca City, died Nov. 17, 1999, at Cumbernauld Village in Winfield.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church in Oxford. The Rev. Danny Ginn will officiate. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery.

Friends may call at Oliver-Hawks Funeral Home in Oxford this evening until 8.

A memorial has been established with the Oxford Christian Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

McCrabb was born Oct. 11, 1907, in Winfield, to Henry James Ross and Adda Belle (Welliver) McCreary. She was raised in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 1925.

On Sept. 6, 1927, she married William Orville McCrabb in Newkirk. After their marriage, they moved to the Oxford area and into town in 1939. Her husband died Dec. 7, 1972.

When she lived in Oxford, McCrabb was a member of the First Christian Church, Order of Eastern Star, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and several bridge clubs.

In 1980 she moved to Ponca City and lived there until moving to Cumbernauld Village in 1996.

Survivors include two sons, Bill McCrabb, Auburn, Wash., and Neil McCrabb, Long Beach, Calif.; a daughter, Marilyn Campbell, Ponca City; a brother, Buell McCreary, Petersburg, Alaska; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Hazel Ward

Hazel B. Ward, 93, longtime Winfield resident, died Nov. 18, 1999, at Cumbernauld Village in Winfield.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery, east of Atlanta.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to service time Monday.

A memorial has been established with the Atlanta Christian Church. Contributions may be made at the church or the funeral home.

Ward was born Nov. 4, 1906, in Oxford to George Edward and Bertha (Reeves) Duncan. She was raised and educated in the Atlanta area and graduated from Atlanta High School in 1924. She also graduated from Wichita Business College.

On June 24, 1926, she married Errett L. Ward in Wichita. They resided in Wichita where she was employed as office manager for Steve Wise Wholesale Co. for 30 years. She retired in 1955.

The couple moved to Winfield in 1968. Mr. Ward died on Dec. 2, 1974. Mrs. Ward had resided at Cumbernauld Village since April 1995.

A member of the Atlanta Christian Church, she was a charter member of the Rose Douglas Chapter 475 Order of Eastern Star and a life member of the Wichita Consistory.

Survivors include four brothers, Ray E. Duncan, Stroud, Okla., Wayne W. Duncan, Wichita, Sheldon Duncan, Winfield, and Dale D. Duncan, Fair Play, Mo.; and two sisters, Freida Brown, Bixby, Okla., and Phyllis Mock, Ponca City.

Lucille McDonald

BELLE PLAINE - Lucille McDonald, 82, of Belle Plaine, died Nov. 18, 1999, in Belle Plaine.

Services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Belle Plaine Cemetery. Pastor Richard Schmidt will officiate.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and Tuesday at Hatfield-Smith Funeral Home.

A memorial has been established with the First Baptist Church.

McDonald was born March 20, 1917, to Carson and Nora Penny. On May 14, 1944, she married the Rev. C.E. "Brother Mac" McDonald in Kansas City, Mo.

She had lived in Belle Plaine for 28 years and was a homemaker. She also volunteered to help students learn to read.

Survivors include two sons, Ronald McDonald, Wellington, and Rodger McDonald, Rose, Okla.; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

William Stone

CEDAR VALE - William N. Stone, 77, of Cedar Vale, died Nov. 19, 1999, at his home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Wauneta United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Cedar Vale Cemetery.

Friends may call until 8 tonight at Wheeler Funeral Home.

A memorial has been established with the Wauneta United Methodist Church.

Stone was born Dec. 27, 1921, in Elgin, to William Leroy and Grace (Lynch) Stone. He was raised and educated in the Elgin area.

During World War II Stone served in the U.S. Army. He was a prisoner of war in Germany and received a Purple Heart. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans.

On Oct. 28, 1942, he married Ellen Belle Byrum in Camp Crowder, Mo. She died Oct. 26, 1998.

Stone worked for the Kansas Department of Transportation for 16 years. He had also farmed and run the cream station in Cedar Vale.

Stone had lived in and around Cedar Vale since 1945 but moved into town in 1975.

Survivors include six sons, William L. Stone, James E. Stone and Terry D. Stone, all of Blackwell, and Tim Stone, Donald Ray Stone and Robert Dale Stone, all of Cedar Vale; four daughters, Caroline Contreras, Cedar Vale, Opal May Evert, Holdenville, Okla., and Ruth A. Lane and Loma L. Smart, both of Sedan; 25 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Jim Wilson

James H. "Jim" Wilson, 59, of 5 Hoylake Court, Winfield, died Nov. 22, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Rick Thornton will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Visitation will be until 9 tonight at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home.

Memorials have been established with Southwestern College and the First United Methodist Church. Contributions can be sent to the funeral home.

Wilson was born Feb. 7, 1940, in Great Bend, to James Floyd and Elsie Weiter (Reed) Wilson. After his mother and sister were killed in a car accident, he was raised by many family members but considered Matilda Wilson to be his mother. He graduated from Wichita West High School in 1958 and from Wichita State University in 1970 with a mechanical engineering degree.

On July 3, 1978, he married Charlotte Miller in Oklahoma.

Wilson worked as a machine operator at DeCoursey Cream Co. from 1960 until 1963. He worked for Beech Aircraft as a draftsman/engineer from 1963 until 1971. He then worked for Binney & Smith where he became a department manager and later the plant manager. After the closing of Binney & Smith, he worked at Raytheon Aircraft in Wichita.

Wilson was a director of First Community Federal Savings and Loan for seven years. He held a variety of leadership positions at First United Methodist Church and was a member of the Rotary Club for 20 years and the Winfield Elks Lodge for 25 years.

He was a Southwestern College Booster; on the Winfield Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors; active with Kansas Special Olympics; on the board of directors with the Winfield Country Club and active in the Winfield Optimist Basketball Club, Economic Development Task Force Main Street Winfield Project and the St. John's Acquisition Committee.

Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Wilson, Winfield; two sons, James Wilson, Winfield, and Chris Wilson, Defuniak, Fla.; four daughters, Michelle Stinson and Danielle Wilson, both of Winfield, Sandy Stewart, Derby, and Bobbie Weed, Edmond, Okla.; a stepbrother, Leonard Weiter, Colorado; and 13 grandchildren.

Clara Hamm

Clara L. Hamm, 94, longtime Cowley County resident, died Nov. 22, 1999, at Winfield Rest Haven.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Tisdale United Methodist Church.

Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor and Morris Funeral Home from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.

A memorial has been established with Tisdale United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made at the church or funeral home.

Hamm was born Jan. 11, 1905, in Cowley County to James and Laura (Bulion) Barnett. She attended Pleasant View District 77 (Frog Hollow) school, graduated from Winfield High School in 1925 and attended Southwestern College.

On May 18, 1926, she married Louis H. Hamm in Wellington. The first four years of their marriage were spent in rural Anthony and and the remainder in Cowley County where they farmed. Her husband died in 1972.

Hamm was a member of Tisdale United Methodist Church, Tisdale United Methodist Women, Pleasant View Extension Homemakers Unit and Walnut Valley Card Club.

Survivors include a son, Robert L. Hamm, Winfield; a daughter, Maxine Mikesell, Clearwater; 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Four children, Wanda, Velma, Dorothea and Philip, preceded her in death.

John Cook

BODEGA BAY, Calif. - John F. Cook, 65, of Bodega Bay, formerly of Winfield, died Oct. 29, 1999, at his home.

A memorial service will be held Dec. 11 in Bodega Bay.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Petaluma, 416 Payran St., Petaluma, CA 94952; the Milo Foundation, which rescues pets and animals, P.O. Box 500, Willits, CA 95490; or any other charity.

Cook was born Oct. 7, 1934, in Winfield, to Thales and Nora (Chambers) Cook. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1952 and received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Kansas in 1956. He worked as an architect in Kansas and Oklahoma for 12 years.

In 1969 the Cooks moved to Bodega Bay. There he worked with Carson Bowler for 30 years, 25 of them as partners. Their practice encompassed residential, professional and business projects, primarily in northern California. He helped design about 100 homes in The Sea Ranch area over the past 30 years.

Survivors include his wife, Mary L. (MaLo) Cook, Bodega Bay; and a son, P. Stevan Cook, Redondo Beach, Calif.

Annabel Wade

WICHITA - Annabel D. Wade, 93, of Wichita, a homemaker, died Nov. 21, 1999.

The Rosary will be said tonight at 7 at Cochran Mortuary.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Cedar Vale Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with St. Margaret Mary Catholic School, 2701 S. Pattie, Wichita, KS 67216.

Wade was born Dec. 12, 1905, in Cedar Vale, to Ray and Bessie (Lemaster) McGill.

On July 31, 1923, she married Ernest L. Wade in Cedar Vale. He died in 1943.

Survivors include a son, Eugene E. Wade, and a daughter, Marjorie Sanburn, both of Wichita; a sister, Nellie Whyde, Arkansas City; 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Lloyd Emmel

Lloyd A. Emmel, 89, formerly of 1406 John, Winfield, died Nov. 21, 1999, at Walnut Hill Nursing Center in Winfield.

Following cremation, inurnment will take place in Highland Cemetery. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Emmel was born Nov. 6, 1910, to Dorsey A. and Celia (Smith) Emmel. He attended Winfield schools.

On June 18, 1933, he married Ellen E. Hoyland at Wellington. The couple made their home in Winfield. Emmel served in the United States Army during World War II and was a food inspector in the European Theater.

He returned to Winfield and worked as a butcher and meat cutter for many years at Sheneman's Market and was manager of the meat department at Higginbottom Market and Grocery. He later was a manager of the meat shop at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center.

Emmel was a member of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen Emmel, Winfield, and many cousins, including Pat Sommers, Winfield.
