Mayphonh Phouthavong

Mayphonh Phouthavong, 61, of 1224 E. 19th, Winfield, died Dec. 4, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Phouthavong was born Jan. 1, 1938, in Meunglap, Samneua, Laos, to Inpangna and Ay Phouthavong. He graduated as a physician's assistant in Vientiane, Laos, and worked at the Vientiane Hospital from 1957 to 1978.

In December 1958 he married Kongsy Kingsada in Mouanghim, Laos.

He worked with the Red Cross documenting statistics for disease control and was a physician's assistant during the Vietnam War, aiding U.S. soldiers.

Phouthavong and his family immigrated to Winfield in April 1980. He worked at Gordon-Piatt Energy Group at Strother Field until his retirement in 1998 due to ill health.

Survivors include his wife, Kongsy Phouthavong, Winfield; four sons, Viengsoth Phouthavong, Tulsa, and Khoroth Phouthavong, Vinny Phouthavong and Chris Phouthavong, all of Winfield; two daughters, Mitmaly Phouthavong, Overland Park, and Sisavanh Houghton, Carbondale; two brothers, Khamtanh Phouthavong, Winfield, and Phan Phouthavong, San Diego; three sisters, Soy Rassavong and Toui Siphonekham, both of San Diego, and Phouang Sithavone, Vientiane, Laos; and eight grandchildren.

Genevieve Greene

WILLIAMSTOWN, W.Va. - Genevieve Faith "Judy" (Daves) Greene, 75, of Williamstown, formerly of Winfield, died Oct. 21, 1999.

A memorial has been established with the Parkersburg Actors Guild Preservation Fund at the Parkersburg Community Foundation, P.O. Box 1762, Parkersburg, WV 26102.

Greene was born Feb. 26, 1924, in Wichita, to John and Emma Florence (Snyder) Daves. Raised in Winfield, she was a musical prodigy by the age of four years. Her parents and community nurtured her ensuing career as a concert pianist and violinist. As a young girl, she was awarded scholarships for four summers to study at the Tanglewood Music Festival in Massachusetts and at Music Mountain in Connecticut.

At age 16, she won a four-year scholarship to the Juilliard School of Music in New York City after attending Southwestern College for a year. As an undergraduate she was concertmistress of the Juilliard Graduate School Orchestra. She played as concertmistress of the American Youth Symphony under the direction of Leopold Stowkowski and played the violin under the direction of Arturo Toscanini. Eventually she became concertmistress of the New York City Opera, played in several New York City nightclubs and was a member of the Oklahoma City Symphony. She also toured extensively.

On May 29, 1944, she married Capt. Fay P. Greene of the U.S. Army Medical Corps in Chicago. After World War II, they lived in New York City and Cleveland, Ohio, before moving to East Hampton, Long Island, N.Y. In East Hampton, she provided musical direction for several productions of the John Drew Theater. In 1952, the Greenes moved to Parkersburg. Since 1957 they had lived near Williamstown.

Over the years, Greene performed concerts and provided musical direction for various productions by the Parkersburg Actors Guild. For 25 years she taught music courses at Marietta College and was concertmistress and co-director of the Marietta College Civic Symphonette.

Green wrote several ballets as well as numerous pieces for piano and violin. She composed the musical score of the historical drama "Eden on the River," based on the life of Aaron Burr.

She is listed in "Who's Who in American Women" and the "International Who's Who of Musicians."

She was a member of the Junior League, Parkersburg Actors Guild, Arts and Letters Society, Parkersburg Community Concert Association, Ohio Federation Women's Clubs and Parkersburg Academy of Medicine Auxiliary and was a founding member of the Ohio Valley Symphony. She received the Distinguished West Virginian award in 1987.

Survivors include her husband, Fay Greene, Williamstown; a son, John Fay Greene, Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; two daughters, Sandra Lee Stevenson, Ottawa, Canada, and Laura Genevieve Greene, San Diego; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

James Harper

FREDONIA - James Fleming Harper III, 67, longtime resident of Severy, died Dec. 7, 1999, at Fredonia Regional Hospital.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Severy Baptist Church. The Rev. Tony Pameticky will officiate. Burial will be in Cresco Cemetery on Highway 99, north of Howard.

A memorial has been established with the Center for Basic Cancer Research at Kansas State University. Contributions may be left with Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Harper was born on April 11, 1932, in Clayton, N.M., to James Fleming Harper II and Ola Faye (Hart) Harper. At an early age he moved with his family to Texas where he attended school at Darrouzett.

On March 19, 1949, he married Patricia Inez Smith in Perryton, Texas. They lived in Texas and Oklahoma but made their home in Kansas during most of their lives.

Mr. Harper was a lifetime farmer and rancher. He was also an accomplished craftsman in woodworking and was a self-employed construction contractor for many years.

He was a member of the Severy Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Harper, Severy; a son, James F. "Bud" Harper IV, Lawrence; three daughters, Donna Peter, Pryor, Okla., Karen Werner, Grove, Okla., and Tricia Seimears, Howard; his mother Ola Harper, Howard; 12 grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Frederick Kill

Services for Frederick A. Kill, Jr., 64, who died Dec. 4, 1999, were held at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 7, 1999, in the Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Connie Wooldridge officiated. Burial was in Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Moline.

Special music included "Riders in the Sky," performed by The Sons of the Pioneers, "Go Rest High on that Mountain," performed by Vince Gill, and "My Special Angel," performed by Bobby Helms.

Honorary casket bearers were Kelly Arnett, Billie Bettz, John Brewer, Don Davis, Dan Dennis, Bud McKenley, Don Snyder and Bill Webster.

Casket bearers were Joe Couch, Frank Culp, Vernon Dennett, Chuck Easum, Bill Gates, Jim McEwain, Bill McKenley and Billie Webster.

A memorial has been established for the benefit of Mr. Kill's children.

Charles Teter

Services for Charles Phillip Teter, 74, who died Dec. 3, 1999, were held at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 8 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. K.B. Murray officiated, and Jim Banks played "Amazing Grace" on the bagpipes.

Following cremation, the family will hold private inurnment ceremonies.

Memorials have been established with Grouse Valley Manor and the Alzheimer's Association.

Nellie Rogers

Services for Nellie Evelyn Rogers, 92, who died Dec. 5, 1999, were held at 2 p.m. Dec. 8 at First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Fred Houston officiated, and "Love Lifted Me" was sung.

Burial was in Memorial Lawn Cemetery at Arkansas City. The Rebekah Lodge of Winfield performed special ceremonies.

Casket bearers were Ben Harris, Norman Hearn, Ben Holman, Randy Kaiser, Lee Wheeler and Gene Wheeler.

Memorials have been established with Winfield Rest Haven, First United Methodist Church and the American Arthritis Foundation.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Kenneth Gatton

BURDEN - Kenneth L. Gatton, 89, of Route 1, Burden, died Dec. 8, 1999, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Cambridge Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight.

A memorial has been established with the Burden First Responders. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Gatton was born May 18, 1910, in Burden, to Rufus and Nancy (Tredway) Gatton. He attended Burden schools and graduated from Burden High School.

On Feb. 18, 1933, he married Easter Whiteman in Winfield. They made their first home in the Cambridge area where Gatton farmed and ranched for 50 years, raising registered Hereford cattle. He retired in the 1980s. The Gattons moved to Burden in April 1997.

Gatton attended the Burden United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Easter Gatton, Burden; a daughter, Mary Buckmaster, Cambridge; and two sisters, Doris Laker, Evergreen, Colo., and Margaret Bickham, Burden.

Norma Cormier

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. - Norma M. Cormier, 76, of Sedro-Woolley, formerly of Winfield, died Dec. 6, 1999, at her home.

Inurnment will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery near Arkansas City. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.

Cormier was born Sept. 16, 1923, in Winfield, to Yancie and Ollie (Chambers) Oldham. She was raised and educated in Winfield.

During World War II, she began working as a clerk for Boeing Co., classifying parts for airplanes. She was employed by Boeing for nearly 20 years.

On March 17, 1956, she married Germain Cormier in Wichita where they made their home until moving to Kent, Wash., in 1965. In 1971 they moved to Sedro-Woolley.

Cormier had been president of a women's bowling league in Sedro-Woolley.

Survivors include her husband, Germain Cormier, Sedro-Woolley; two daughters, Kathryn Olsen, Colville, Wash., and Sherry Stensrud, Edmond, Okla.; a brother, Raymond Oldham, St. Louis; a sister, Vera Engel, Wichita; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Raymond Eaton

ARKANSAS CITY - Raymond Eaton, 92, of Arkansas City, died Dec. 9, 1999, at Presbyterian Manor Health Care Center in Arkansas City.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Hawks Funeral Home. The Rev. Steve Chambers will officiate. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

A memorial has been established with the Sheri Gordon Memorial Park Brick Fund in Perkins, Okla. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Eaton was born June 4, 1907, in Perkins, Okla., to Frank "Pistol Pete" and Anna (Sillix) Eaton. He graduated from high school in Perkins and from Oklahoma A&M in Stillwater in 1931.

On Dec. 1, 1931, he married Pearl Shurtz in Newkirk. They lived in the Perkins area until moving to Arkansas City in about 1933. They later moved to Missouri for a few years but returned to Arkansas City in 1941.

Eaton worked for Total Petroleum for 39 years before retiring. He then worked part time as a Pinkerton security guard and at Midwest Supply.

Survivors include his wife, Pearl Eaton, Arkansas City; two sons, Lyle Eaton, Arkansas City, and Randy Eaton, Wichita; a daughter, Debra Vaughn, Winfield; a brother, Frank Eaton, Enid, Okla.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A son, Wayne Robert Eaton, preceded him in death.

Wanda Cowles

ESTES PARK, Colo. - Wanda Cowles, 69, of Estes Park, formerly of Mayfield, died Dec. 7, 1999.

A memorial service will be held at Community Church of the Rockies, Estes Park, at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Revs. Karen Carl and Ned Linegar will officiate.

Memorials have been established with the Rocky Mountain Nature Association and the Victims Assistance Program. Contributions may be made through Allnutt Funeral Service, 1302 Graves Ave., Estes Park, CO 80517.

Cowles was born April 16, 1930, in Mayfield, to Roland A. and Iola (Von Weber) Miller. She graduated from Wellington High School and received a bachelor's degree in physical education from Southwestern College.

On July 3, 1952, she married George M. Cowles in Estes Park.

Cowles taught school in Kansas and worked in the Chicago area as a missionary. From 1950 to 1954 she worked at the YMCA of the Rockies, and they also resided at Cheley Camp, Brighton and Greeley, Colo.

She accompanied her husband on National Park Service assignments in Rocky Mountain, Everglades and Olympic national parks. They returned to Estes Park in 1971, and she worked at Estes Park Medical Center as a certified nurse's assistant, an emergency medical technician and an operating room technician. She retired in the mid-1970s. She later worked as a psychology technician at Harmony Foundation; at Rapid Transit Rafting Co. and at Estes Valley Home and Garden Center.

She was a past member of the Business and Professional Women and a member of the Rodeo and Horse Show Committee and the Estes Park Garden Club. A Rocky Mountain National Park VIP, she had volunteered there for over 20 years. She was also a volunteer for the Rocky Mountain Nature Association.

Survivors include her husband, George Cowles, Estes Park; three daughters, Nancy Cowles, Glen Haven, Colo., Cindy Isham, Durango, Colo., and Becky Johnson, Estes Park; a brother, Dean Miller, Wellington; a sister, Ruth Anna Hollingsworth, Salt Lake City; and two grandchildren.
