Estella Johnson

ARKANSAS CITY - Estella Mae Johnson, 69, of Arkansas City, died Dec. 11, 1999, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Hawks Funeral Home. Burial will be in Newkirk Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to noon.

A memorial has been established. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Johnson was born Dec. 15, 1929, in Celestine, Okla., to Albert and Areliua (Batum) Johnson. She moved to Arkansas City from Virginia in the early 1950s.

Her husband, Royce Johnson, died Sept. 15, 1982.

She had been a cook at the Shamrock Cafe and attended both the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church and the Church of God in Christ.

Survivors include three sons, Ronnie Bradford, Spokane, Wash., and Eugene Cain and Michael Budd, both of Arkansas City; four daughters, Constance Bradford and Pat Kay Jackson, both of Arkansas City, Michelle Vaccarella, Rosedale, Md., and Terri Hays-Geisdorf, Wichita; a sister, Vivian Phillips, Dallas; 27 grandchildren, including two grandsons she helped raise, Marcus D. Reed, Lansing, and Herbert Lee Reed, El Dorado; 35 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

A son, Terry Johnson, preceded her in death.

Beulah McCord

Beulah C. McCord, 96, of 1020 E. 11th, Winfield, died Dec. 13, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Central Baptist Church. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery near Arkansas City.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday.

A memorial has been established with South Central Baptist Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

McCord was born Jan. 14, 1903, in Berry County, Mo., to John and Orlena (Stever) Chappell. She was educated in Mano, Mo., schools and graduated from Cassville High School.

She received her teaching certificate in Cassville in 1922 and taught at Brock School and Shady Grove School in Missouri for five years.

On March 9, 1927, she married Floid R. McCord in Cassville. They made their first home in Cowley County, later moved to Russell County and returned to Cowley County in 1948. She was a substitute teacher in Winfield in 1949 and a homemaker for over 72 years.

For many years McCord taught vacation Bible school and Sunday school. For the last several years she was a member of Central Baptist Church. She was presented the Central Baptist Church "Grandmother of the Year" award on Mother's Day 1986. She was also a member of a women's club in Arkansas City.

Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Floid R. McCord, and a son, Floid Ray McCord, both of Winfield; three daughters, Imogene Hoyle, Goddard, Esther Faye Wolf, Amarillo, Texas, and Joan Winterscheid, Gridley; a brother, George Chappell, Augusta; a sister, Inez Douthitt, Barnesville, Ga.; 11 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren, 11 stepgreat-grandchildren and four stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

Bill Powers

J.W. "Bill" Powers, 94, of Cumbernauld Village in Winfield, died Dec. 13, 1999.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Grace United Methodist Church with burial in Highland Cemetery. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions can be made to Grace United Methodist Church or the Bill and Lucille Powers Scholarship Fund at Southwestern College.

Powers was born Oct. 6, 1905, in Orlando, Okla., to J.W. and Charlotte Powers. When he was four, his father died.

Powers graduated from Winfield High School in 1923 and from Southwestern College. In 1928 he married Lucile May Green.

The Powerses lived in several western Kansas towns while he taught, coached and later served as principal and superintendent of several schools. In 1944 they returned to Winfield where he was an Internal Revenue Service agent. In 1947 he bought Newland Insurance and Real Estate Agency and was a businessman and civic supporter until selling the business in 1980.

Powers was a past president of the Winfield Lions Club and active in the Winfield Area Chamber of Commerce and Grace United Methodist Church. A supporter of Southwestern College, he was named to the college's sports hall of fame in 1997.

His first wife died in November 1981.

On March 9, 1985, he married Mary Hatteberg. They had resided at Cumbernauld Village since 1989.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Powers, Winfield; a daughter, Marilyn McNeish, Winfield; a son, Louis Powers, Houston; a stepson, Larry Hatteberg, Wichita; seven grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Leola Ring

Leola May Ring, 85, of 712 E. Fourth, Winfield, died Dec. 11, 1999, at her home.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Central Baptist Church. Burial will be in Rose Valley Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with Central Baptist Church.

Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Ring was born Sept. 3, 1914, in Spearman, Texas, to Orville and Elsie Ruth (Hostetter) Thomlinson. She was raised in the Tuttle, Okla., area and graduated from Tuttle High School. In 1973 she received her Associate of Arts degree from Cowley County Community College.

On Dec. 30, 1931, she married Olen Thomas Ring in Tuttle. He died in March 1983.

Ring worked as a licensed mental health technician at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center for many years.

She was active in the American Association of Retired Persons and was a member of Central Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Olen Ring Jr., Georgetown, Calif.; four daughters, Ruth Theimer, West Yellowstone, Mont., Anita Beer, Branson, Mo., Virginia Sheriden, Franklinton, La., and Kathy Stiner, Winfield; two brothers, Leroy Thomlinson, Schenectady, N.Y., and Bill Thomlinson, Nowata, Okla.; two sisters, Etta Faye Howell, South Dakota, and Elsie Fern Plumlee, Tuttle, Okla.; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Allen Rothgeb

LONGTON - Allen Benson Rothgeb, 83, died Dec. 12, 1999, at his home in Longton.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Longton Cemetery with Ray Dean Rothgeb officiating.

A memorial has been established with the Longton Senior Center. Contributions can be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home.

Rothgeb was born Sept. 12, 1916, near Upola in Elk County to Ira Thomas and Mary Annette (Hamilton) Rothgeb. The family moved to Longton in 1934, and he graduated from Longton High School and Independence Junior College.

Rothgeb taught school in rural Elk County before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force Reserve in 1940. He was inducted into the Army in 1941 and served as a sergeant in India during World War II before being discharged in 1948.

Rothgeb graduated from Oklahoma A&M with honors.

He was employed by Boeing Airplane Co. in Wichita as a machinist from 1950 to 1971. He then moved to Longton and took care of his mother.

Survivors include his sisters, Mary Buchanan, Youngstown, Ariz., Myrtle Kramer, Altoona, and Viola Reynolds, Longton; and a brother, Delbert Rothgeb, Bentonville, Ark.

Jorge Sturich

Services for Dr. Jorge M. Sturich, 45, who died Dec. 11, 1999, were held at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 14 at the First United Methodist Church. The Revs. Jerre Nolte and Ken Davidson officiated. Private inurnment will be in Highland Cemetery.

Dr. James and Louise Schuppener performed "On Eagles' Wings." The congregation, accompanied by Dr. James Strand, sang "How Great Thou Art." Dari Trout played "Color My World" on the flute, accompanied by Roxy Callison. Tim Durham on mandolin and Gary Gackstatter on guitar performed "Amazing Grace."

The postlude was the Tocatta Symphony IV, performed by Charles Widor.

Honorary casket bearers were Scott Ernest, Tom Hamoor, Tom Sinclair, Dr. Guille "Bill" Sturich, Dr. Robert Brown, Keith Thurber, Melvin Finuf, Kenny Day and Don Short.

Casket bearers were Jerry Hopper, Dr. Anthony Johnstone, Brent Casad, Dr. Robert Gonzales, Mark Krusor, Dr. Stan Sawyer and Gene Branscum.

Memorials have been established with the Southwestern College Scholarship Foundation and USD 465 Scholarship Foundation.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Clyde Combs

BLACKWELL - Clyde Norse Combs, 72, of Blackwell, died Dec. 12, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital in Enid, Okla.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Freewill Baptist Church. The Revs. Wayne Bookout and Richard Hood will officiate. Burial will be in Blackwell Cemetery. Hackler Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Combs was born Jan. 14, 1927, in Foraker, Okla., to James T. and Amanda E. (Collins) Combs. When he was 11 years old, the family moved to Shidler, Okla., where he resided for four years, then moved to Arkansas City. He moved to Blackwell in 1952.

On Feb. 4, 1954, he married Gladys Sayre in Newkirk. She died Nov. 16, 1994.

Combs worked for the Oklahoma Department of Transportation as assistant supervisor for Kay County for 21 years. He retired in May 1989.

He was a member of the First Freewill Baptist Church where he had taught Sunday school.

Survivors include two sons, Warren D. Combs, Blackwell, and Richard L. Sayre, Bartlesville; a daughter, Janie Marie McConnel, Enid; a sister, Marie Peterson, Winfield; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Nelda Teter

UDALL - Services for Nelda L. Barnett Teter, 62, who died Dec. 11, 1999, were held at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 15 at the Udall United Methodist Church. The Rev. Cathy Holley officiated. Burial was in Ninnescah Cemetery.

Cora Mettling was the organist. Sheena Godwin sang "Precious Lord, Take My Hand" and "Amazing Grace." The congregation sang "The Old Rugged Cross."

Honorary casket bearers were Don Chapman, Randy Hoffman, Lloyd Klein, Ray Lacey, Gregg Mettling and Donald Ruth.

Casket bearers were Bob Bailey, Brad Barnett, Kirk Barnett, Mark Barnett, Chris Holmes, Jole Jessip, Ken Ruth and Kevin Ruth.

A memorial has been established with the Udall United Methodist Church.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Ernest Williams

Ernest Lee Williams, 83, of 2019 W. 14th, Winfield, died Dec. 16, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from noon until 9 p.m. Friday. Family will receive friends there from 7 to 8 p.m.

A memorial has been established with the First Assembly of God Church Youth Group.

Williams was born July 26, 1916, in Yellville, Ark., to George Lee and Minnie (Baker) Williams. He was raised and educated in Everton, Ark., and began farming as a youth.

On Oct. 10, 1936, he married Shelline Taylor. They made their first home in the Everton area.

In 1955 they moved to Winfield where he was employed by Deal Lumber Co., Southern Produce Co. and Daniels Stone and Ready Mix. He was later self-employed and retired in 1989.

He had resided at Good Samaritan Village since April 1998.

Survivors include his wife, Shelline Williams, and a daughter, Betty J. Daniels, both of Winfield; two granddaughters and five great-grandchildren.
