Ahwilda Gray
Ahwilda M. Gray, 89, longtime Winfield resident, died Dec. 15, 1999, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center in Arkansas City.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church in Winfield. Burial will be in Dexter Cemetery.
Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday.
A memorial has been established with the First Baptist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Gray was born Dec. 30, 1909, on a farm near Udall, to Frank and Mary Rogers. She attended Udall and Winfield schools.
In 1927 she married Melvin B. Gray, and they made their first home in Latham. As a young woman, Gray worked for Ericson Ranch. The Grays later lived on a farm at Dexter until moving to Winfield in 1967. In Winfield Gray worked as a psychiatric aide at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center.
Her husband died in 1975.
Gray was a member of the First Baptist Church where she was involved with the Baptist Missionary. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the local chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons.
Survivors include three sons, Howard Gray, Pratt, Roger Gray, Hays, and Richard Gray, Winfield; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Two sons, Zane Gray and Franklin Joseph Gray, preceded her in death.
Leola Ring
Services for Leola Mae Ring, 85, who died Dec. 11, 1999, were held at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 16 at Central Baptist Church. The Rev. Gerald Graber officiated. Burial was in Rose Valley Cemetery.
Gwen Lumbert was the organist. Music selections included "Amazing Grace," "How Great Thou Art" and "Blessed Assurance."
Honorary casket bearers were Carl Theimer, Daniel Theimer and Jeffrey Ring. Casket bearers were Ben Theimer, Nick Crocker, Scott Teenor and Shane Sloan.
A memorial has been established with Central Baptist Church.
Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Beulah McCord
Services for Beulah C. McCord, 96, who died Dec. 13, 1999, were held at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 17 at Central Baptist Church. The Rev. Ken Beckner officiated. Burial was in Memorial Lawn Cemetery
near Arkansas City.
Gwen Lumbert was the organist, and Randy Clifford sang "In the Garden" and "How Great Thou Art."
Honorary casket bearers were Wesley Book, Clint Bryant, Keith Bryant, Ken Bryant, Aaron Hunt, Nathan Hunt, Norman Hunt, Jason Teague, Shawn Teague, Chris Weaver-Carlson, Tracey Weaver and Kristen Wolf.
Casket bearers were Paul Book Jr., Kevin Hoyle, Steve McCord, Larry Teague, Col. Richard Weaver and Gaylon Wolf.
A memorial has been established with the South Central Association of Southern Baptists.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Nina Brooks
BURDEN - Nina L. Brooks, 79, lifelong Burden area resident, died Dec. 16, 1999, at her home near Burden.
Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Burden. The Rev. Art Hays will officiate. Burial will be in Burden Cemetery.
Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday and until noon on Monday.
A memorial has been established in her name for Hospice Inc. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Brooks was born April 12, 1920, at Kingsley, to Thomas Jefferson and Helen Iline Fitzgerald. She was raised by John Calvin and Ada (Peters) Ore in the Burden area and was educated at New Salem rural school. She also attended Burden High School.
On April 12, 1940, she married Donald Brooks at the Baptist Church parsonage in Burden. They resided in the Burden area throughout their marriage. They had lived and worked on their farm northeast of Burden for 50 years. Mrs. Brooks was also employed as a nurse's aide in various nursing homes in Cowley County.
She was a member of the Burden Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Don Brooks, a son, Eugene Brooks, and her daughter, Shirley L. Shelton, all of Burden; nine grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren and 11 stepgreat-grandchildren.
A son, Harold Edward Brooks, preceded her in death.
Sylvia Albright
LONGTON - Sylvia Elizabeth Albright, 96, formerly of Longton, died Dec. 17, 1999, in Independence.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Dec. 20 at the Longton United Methodist Church. The Rev. Joe Nichols officiated. Burial was in Longton Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Longton United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
Albright was born Aug. 24, 1903, in Longton, to Judge John E. and Samantha Caroline (Staneart) Murphy. She grew up in the Longton community and graduated from Longton High School.
After graduating from business college in Wichita, she returned to Elk County where she made her home in Howard. She worked at the Elk County Courthouse and taught in rural schools.
On Nov. 11, 1928, she married Hilbert Lamar Albright in Longton. They lived in Independence and Coffeyville before moving to Wichita in the early 1930s. In 1945 they moved to Longton and owned and operated Albright Drug Store for over 20 years.
Albright also operated Sylvia's Antiques in Longton for many years.
She was a lifetime member of the National Press Photographers Association and worked as a stringer for KAKE television station in Wichita. She was also a member of Longton United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Larry Albright, Los Angeles; and a cousin, Ina Murphy, Longton.
Leroy BrakeA. Leroy Brake, 63, of 315 E. Fourth, Winfield, died Dec. 18, 1999, at his home.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Maple City Cemetery.
Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday. The family will receive visitors there from 7 to 8 p.m.
Memorials have been established with Hospice Inc. and the American Cancer Association. Contributions may be made at the funeral home.
Brake was born July 24, 1936, in Elsinore, Mo., to Grady and Pearl (Boyer) Brake. He was raised and educated in Elsinore.
In 1958 he moved to Kansas where he was employed in construction and factory work.
On April 15, 1982, he married Helen Phillips in Newkirk. They made their home in Winfield. Brake retired in 1990 due to ill health.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Brake, Winfield; three sons, Lee Brake and Larry Brake, both of Abilene, Texas, and Floyd Brake, Terre Haute, Ind.; two daughters, Charlotte Allen, Belle Plaine, and Brenda Brake, Maize; three stepdaughters, Christine Casebolt and Sandy Casebolt, both of Winfield, and Cathy Heinz, Garden City; a granddaughter he helped raise, Desi Boyle, Winfield; two brothers, Clyde Brake, Winfield, and Ed Brake, Arkansas City; four sisters, Lily Gooch, Doniphan, Mo., Edna Allison, Arkansas City, Glenda Hogg, Wichita; and Dorothy Watkins, Belle Plaine; 17 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Wava Carter
MOORE, Okla. - Wava Mary Behymer Carter, 87, formerly of Winfield, died Dec. 16, 1999.
Services were held at 1 p.m. Dec. 20 in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. The Rev. Bob R. Fasgold officiated. John M. Ireland Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established with the League of the Blind.
Carter was born June 6, 1912, in Tucumcari, N.M., to Moses and Flossy Derusha.
Her first husband, Homer H. Behymer, preceded her in death.
On June 6, 1958, she married Marion Carter in Amarillo, Texas.
Survivors include her husband, Marion Carter, Moore; and a son, Homer Behymer, Oklahoma City.
Laura Graham
Services for Laura Mae Graham were held at 10 a.m. Dec. 18, 1999, at Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Rick Thornton officiated, and a letter from Carlton Ward was read by Carol Rupp.
Ed Larsen sang "The 23rd Psalm" and "Amazing Grace." Laura Belle Haines was the organist.
Burial was in Highland Cemetery
under the direction of Miles Funeral Service. Honorary casket bearers were E.C. Flower, Stanley Graham, Claude Goodnight and Price Heimer.
Casket bearers were Keith Flower, Ben Holman, Ron Mozingo, Bruce Ranger, Wayne Rush and Joe Vann.
A memorial has been established with the Herbert C. Hawk Memorial Scholarship Foundation.
Ella Mae Leonard
Ella Mae Leonard, 95, died Dec. 18, 1999, at Cumbernauld Village in Winfield.
A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton. The Rev. Jay Anderson will officiate, and burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with the United Methodist Committee on Relief and the Winfield Area Habitat for Humanity.
Leonard was born May 13, 1904, in Okeene, Okla., to Jacob and Mollie (Schuber) Haas. She graduated from Chapman High School.
On Aug. 14, 1924, she married John Spohn in Abilene, and they resided in Tampa. He died in 1945.
On Aug. 4, 1946, she married Roy H. Leonard in Wichita. They were partners in Leonard Builders Co. and built more than 100 houses in Newton from 1947 to 1966. He died Sept. 8, 1976.
Leonard was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and Fidelis Sunday School Class, all in Newton.
Survivors include a daughter, Shirley Jester, and one grandson, Chad Jester, both of Winfield, and two great-grandchildren.
