Veryl Moon
Veryl Archer Rowe Moon, 91, of Winfield, died Dec. 19, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Contributions may be made through the funeral home to a charity of the donor's choice.
Moon was born March 5, 1908, in Cambridge, to Nathaniel Stephen "Mood" and Amanda Allen (Taylor) Archer. She attended Winfield area schools and graduated from Winfield High School in 1927. She then attended Emporia State Teachers College and taught in rural schools.
On Nov. 2, 1929, she married Daniel Merle Rowe in Wichita. They made their home on a farm in Cowley County. He died Sept. 12, 1945.
On July 26, 1958, she married Harold William Moon at Tisdale, and they made their home in Winfield. She retired from Woolworth's in 1958. Her husband died May 25, 1997.
She was a member of Tisdale United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Kermit Rowe, Wichita, and Daniel Rowe, Papillion, Neb.; two daughters, Charlyne Paton, Winfield, and Virginia Shutt, Bartlesville; two stepdaughters, Elaine Thomas, Augusta, and Janice Filbert, Kirksville, Mo.; two brothers, Dale Archer and Mace Archer, both of Winfield; three sisters, Letha Rising, Nadine Peck and Ruth Sparks, all of Winfield; 15 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
An infant daughter, Leah Francis, and a stepson, Royce Moon, preceded her in death.
Ernest Williams
Services for Ernest Lee Williams were held at 2 p.m. Dec. 18, 1999, at Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Ken Davidson officiated, and burial was in Highland Cemetery.
"I'll Fly Away" and "Precious Memories" were sung by Lynn Merritt, Kay Perdaris, Sherri Beebe, Lisa Delgado and Jim Phillips. Guitar and mandolin music recorded by Williams was also played.
Honorary casket bearers were Ben Green, Loyd Hittle, Charlie Martin, Arthur Morris, James Clinton Morris, Conception Tarin, Floyd Thomas and Jerry Williams.
Casket bearers were John Brazle, Dennis Hittle, Byron Jones, Bill Larkin, Larry Mossman and Jim Phillips.
A memorial has been established with the First Assembly of God Church Youth Group.
John Jackle
DOUGLASS - John Edward Jackle, 62, of Douglass, died Dec. 18, 1999, in Douglass.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Douglass Christian Church. The Rev. Cliff F. Muci will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery
in Augusta.
Friends may call until 8 tonight, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home.
Memorials have been established with the Douglass Public Library and Hospice Inc.
Jackle was born May 3, 1937, in Wichita, to Edward W. and Marguerite (Dunn) Jackle.
He was employed at Cessna as a data base systems analyst and engineer.
A former member of the Douglass City Council, he was on the Douglass Public Library Board of Directors.
Survivors include three sons, John E. Jackle Jr., Wichita, James Jackle, Turpin, Okla., and Jerry F. Jackle, Douglass; two stepdaughters, Glenda Campbell, Wichita, and Kristi Davis, Kansas City, Mo.; a sister, Betty Rousch, Joplin, Mo.; his companion, Lila Guyot; and 12 grandchildren.
William Baucus
TAOS, N.M. - William D. Baucus, 72, of Taos, formerly of Winfield and Arkansas City, died Dec. 14, 1999, at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 28 at College Hill United Methodist Church in Wichita.
Baucus was born in Kansas City, Mo. He attended New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell and graduated from Oklahoma A&M. He was a veteran of the Korean War.
For a number of years, Baucus served as personnel manager for John Morrell Meat Packers in Arkansas City and subsequently served as general manager. He then organized and operated Ark Valley Feeders east of Arkansas City. Following his years with John Morrell, he continued to be involved in ranching while establishing The Merchant Group in which he continued to be active until his death.
Baucus was involved in numerous organizations during his lifetime. He served on and chaired the board of Presbyterian Manors, Mid-America.
A daughter, Lou Dickey, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Caroline Baucus, Taos; two daughters, Mary Hunt, Liberty, Mo., and Karen Mills, Colenso, South Africa; a sister, Lou Dickey Farr, Austin, Texas; and three grandchildren.
Nina Brooks
BURDEN - Services for Nina Louise Brooks, 79, who died Dec. 16, 1999, were held at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 20 at the Burden First Baptist Church. The Rev. Art Hays officiated. Burial was in Burden Cemetery.
Ilah Marshall performed "He Hideth My Soul," and the Rev. Norman Reeves performed "Amazing Grace."
Casket bearers were Orville Bair, Jerry Bryan, Carrol Harris, Dwain Lauppe, Roger Snyder and Jack Thompson.
A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Ahwilda Gray
Services for Ahwilda Marie Gray, 89, who died Dec. 15, 1999, were held at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 20 at the First Baptist Church. The Rev. Warren Smith officiated. Burial was in Dexter Cemetery.
Jane and J.K. Campbell performed "Beyond the Sunset" and "In the Garden." Marilyn Buffum played "Peace in the Valley." A recording of "Angels Among Us" by Alabama was also played.
Casket bearers were Paul Brown, Kim Howell, Todd Leftwich, Mick Parvin, Mark Scales and Deuane Wells.
A memorial has been established with the First Baptist Church.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Dorothy Taylor
TOPEKA - Dorothy Canfield Taylor, 86, of Topeka, died Dec. 16, 1999, at a local care facility.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Dec. 21 in Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel. A private inurnment will take place later in Highland Cemetery
in Winfield.
Memorial contributions may be given to an organization of the donor's choice.
Taylor was born Feb. 18, 1913, in Grundy Center, Iowa, to Marion Albert and Millie Elizabeth (Canfield) Tharp.
On March 26, 1932, she married Roy M. Taylor in Winfield. They divorced in 1954.
In 1955 she moved to Topeka from Winfield. She worked for The Topeka Capital Journal in the advertising department until her retirement in 1975. She also worked for the Santa Fe Railroad in Galveston, Texas, and Crown Drug Store, Owl Drug Store and Jayhawk Drug Store, all in Topeka. In Winfield she was employed by Binney & Smith.
Taylor was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1650 Auxiliary and Santa Fe Old-Timers Club.
A daughter, Susan Jean Taylor, died in 1943.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary A. Haller, Falls Church, Va.; a foster daughter, Margaret Jantzen, Topeka; a stepbrother, R. Donald Amrine, Winfield; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Margaret Austin
ARKANSAS CITY - Margaret Austin, 82, of Arkansas City, died Dec. 21, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home will announce arrangements.
Jon Brantley
LARNED - Jon Blaine Brantley, 58, of Larned, died Dec. 20, 1999, at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus, Great Bend.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Larned. Pastor Charles Grant will officiate.
Friends may call until 8 tonight Wednesday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned, and until service time Thursday at the church. The family will receive friends at the church in the fellowship hall following the service.
Cremation has taken place.

Brantley was born July 1, 1941, in Winfield, to Pleas and Thelma (Barnhill) Brantley. He graduated from Winfield High School, attended St. John's College and graduated from the Russian language program at Syracuse University in New York.
Brantley served in the Seventh U.S. Air Force as a Russian linguist specialist in Berlin, Germany.
He then worked for the communities of Little River, Lyons and Larned as a law enforcement officer before obtaining his private investigator's license.
On Dec. 29, 1960, he married Marcia Cranblett in Winfield.
Survivors include his wife, Marcia Brantley, Larned; a son, Todd Brantley, Topeka; a daughter, Heather Helvie, Larned; two brothers, Virgil Brantley, Texas, and Eugene Brantley, Oklahoma; two sisters, Sondra Jarvis, Asheville, N.C., and Julia Dillard, Winfield; and one grandchild.
Laura Olberding
Laura Beth Olberding, 71, of Route 3, Winfield, died Dec. 19, 1999, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight.

Olberding was born Dec. 26, 1927, in Sedan, to Leslie Ray and Thelma (McSpadden) Smith. She attended Sedan schools and graduated from Sedan High School in 1944. She also graduated from Bartlesville Beauty College and owned and operated Laura's Hair Shoppe near Winfield for more than 25 years.
Survivors include a son, Charles Anthony Thomas, Winfield; three daughters, Billie Jean Thomas, Pawhuska, Okla., Charlotte Rae Thomas, Bartlesville, and Thomasa Carol Davenport, Salina, Okla.; two brothers, Loren Smith, Sedan, and Frank Smith, Oxford; two sisters, Georgia Dale, Arkansas City, and Myda Sallee, Winfield; 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
