Redmon
Lee Redmon, 54, died March 28, 2001. He was born July 19, 1946, in Rossville, the son of Homer and Mary Redmon. At the age of 3 the family moved to Mayetta and lived in the area until he graduated from Mayetta High School in 1963. Lee joined the Navy that same year and served aboard the USS Clamagore FS343 for four years. Returning home, he moved to Kansas City, Mo., and began work with Kenworth. He was a member of the UAW until the closing of the plant. Lee started work at Garfight as a mechanic in 1987. He earned his associates degree with honors in aircraft mechanics from Maplewoods Community College and went to TWA in 1990. He was a member of the IAM until his death. He was an active member of the First Christian Church in Smithville, Mo., and held positions as a board member and on the deaconate team. Mr. Redmon was preceded in death by his father, Homer Redmon, a sister, Margaret Ballard, and two brothers, Carl Redmon and John Redmon. Survivors include his mother, Mary Redmon, Kansas City, Mo.; three sisters, Anna Lou Lahey, Anderson, Calif., Mary Ann Bryant, and Monica Olson both of Topeka; six brothers, Theron Redmon, Chicago, Ill., Gene Redmon, Kansas City, Mo., Bill Redmon, Valley Falls, Edward Redmon and Lloyd Redmon, both of Topeka, and Don Redmon, Rossville. Services will be held at 2 p.m. March 31 at First Christian Church in Smithville, Mo. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. April 1 at Delia Cemetery. Military honors by the Rossville American Legion. Memorial contributions may be given to the cancer research in care of the Cox Funeral Home in Plattsburg, Mo. or to the First Christian Church in Smithville, Mo.
Fox
John Lester Fox, 50, Denison, died March 27, 2001 at a Topeka hospital. Services are pending at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton.
Kennedy
Virginia M. Kennedy, 54, Holton, died March 27, 2001 at her home. She was born Aug. 5, 1946 in Topeka, the daughter of John and Mildred Boucher Ullery. Mrs. Kennedy graduated from Scranton High School in 1964. She lived in Topeka for five years where she worked for American States Insurance Company as a secretary. She had lived in Holton since 1969. She was a homemaker and seamstress. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall in Holton and was a past member of the East Grant Unit near Holton. She married Charles Kennedy on April 19, 1969 in Holton. He survives. Other survivors include three sons, Matthew Kennedy, Luke Kennedy, and Jacob Kennedy, all of Holton; three daughters, Zena Kennedy, Hiawatha, Sarah Kennedy and Laine Kennedy, both of Wichita; two brothers, James Ullery and William Ullery, both of Scranton; two sisters, Irene Lindberg, Tacoma, Wash., and Nancy Hinkle, Scranton; and four grandchildren, all of Holton. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. March 30 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will be in Holton Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. March 29 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be given to the Ronald McDonald House, and sent in care of the funeral home.
Owens
Daymond Newton Owens, 91, Topeka, died March 27, 2001 at a Topeka nursing home. He was born June 22, 1909, in Perkins, Okla., the son of Calvin and Tilda Bowman Owens. He worked as a security guard for Santa Fe Railroad for 42 years. He married Ruth Jacobson on June 12, 1972 in Miami, Okla. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Dale Owens, Alabama; a daughter, Damalee Owens, Texas; a stepson, William A. Meyers, Topeka; and two stepdaughters, Shirley Blake, Florida, and JoAnn Bulger, Overland Park. He was preceded in death by a son, Don Owens, in 1982; a step-daughter, Doris Viergever, in May 1999; and his first wife, Bessie Owens, in January 1972. Graveside services will be held March 30 at Memorial Park Cemetery
in Topeka. Burial will follow. Mr. Owens will lie in state after 4 p.m. March 29. Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. March 29 at Parker Price Mortuary in Topeka. Memorial contributions may be given to Plaza West Regional Health Center, 1570 SW Westport Dr., Topeka, Kan. 66604.
Eby
Arthur E. Eby, 92, Mayetta, died March 26, 2001 at Stormont-Vail Regional HealthCare Center in Topeka. He was born July 6, 1908, in Mayetta, the son of Ora and Anna Zirger Eby. He was a graduate of Circleville High School. He was a farmer/stockman and had worked for the sale barn in Emmett for seven years. He married Mildred Wells on April 17, 1938 in Soldier. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, Larry Eby and Gene Eby, both of Mayetta; a daughter, Leetha Smith, Osawatomie; a sister, Josephine Shupe, Holton; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sisters, Callie Hudson and Lottie Hodge, and by a brother, Bill Eby. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. March 31 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will be in Rossville Cemetery. A visitation will be held March 30 from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be given to the Pottawatomi United Methodist Church, and sent in care of the funeral home.
Koch
Vincent P. Koch, 90, Axtell, died March 26 at a nursing home in Seneca. He was born Jan. 19, 1911 on a farm north of Baileyville, the son of John P. and Carolyn M. Eisenbarth Koch. He grew up in Baileyville and attended rural school and Sacred Heart School in Baileyville. Mr. Koch was a farmer. He later worked for the Marshall County Road and Bridge Department. He and his wife cleaned St. Michael’s Church in Axtell from 1968 to 1983, and they were custodians for St. Michael’s School from 1974 to June 1990. He was a member of St. Michael’s Church in Axtell and a former member of Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville. He married Helen B. Hulsing on Jan. 19, 1937 at Baileyville. She survives. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cecelia Rose Koch, Dec. 19, 1947; and a grandson, Bradley Koch. Survivors include seven sons, John Koch, Baileyville, Francis Koch, Holton, Ralph Koch, Leroy Koch, Carl Koch and Roger Koch, all of Axtell, and Michael Koch, Lindsborg; seven daughters, Verita Schmitz, Baileyville, Edna Lackey, Kansas City, Kan., Mary Kramer, Grand Junction, Colo., Alice Porting and JoAnn Porting, both of Axtell, Barbara Korte, Goff, and Sharon Skalla, Beattie; 47 grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; 13 step-great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. March 30 at St. Michael’s Church in Axtell. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery
in Baileyville. Mr. Koch will lie in state at the church for an hour preceding the mass. The rosary will be prayed at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. March 29 at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca, where Mr. Koch will lie in state after 3 p.m. March 28. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael’s School and sent in care of the family.
Payne
James Henry Payne, 88, Holton, died March 26, 2001 at his home in Holton. He was born May 20, 1912 near Holton, the son of Charles Cleveland and Lula Maude Richard Payne. He attended schools in Jackson County. Mr. Payne was a farmer, dairyman and stockman in Mayetta and Holton. He retired from farming in 1965 and later worked as a supervisor for a hybrid seed company in Carrollton, Mo. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Holton, Mayetta Lodge 393, AF&AM, and the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry in Topeka. He married Grace Evelyn Reamer on June 26, 1938 in Holton. She died Sept. 16, 2000. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Bessie M. Bailey. Survivors include a sister, Virginia Gray, Kansas City, Mo.; and nieces and nephews. Services were held March 28 at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton. Burial with Masonic rites by Mayetta Lodge 393, AF&AM was in Holton Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church and sent in care of the funeral home.
Worley
Sherrod Joseph Worley, 40, Atchison, died March 26, 2001 at his home following a lengthy bout with cancer. He was born May 19, 1960 in Horton, the son of Richard Joseph and Wesley Nichols Worley. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1978. He then attended Highland Community College for two years before graduating from Northwest Missouri State College at Maryville, Mo. Sherrod had worked at McDonald’s for three years, Wal-Mart for eight years and Atchison Leather Products for the past three years, all in Atchison. He attended Faith Bible Fellowship Church. He was very active in Theatre Atchison, having worked in many areas of the productions including lights, sound, and building sets. He also was a member of the Board of Directors for Theatre Atchison. He enjoyed watching professional wrestling, working on computers, gardening, shopping and was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan. He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Worley, on April 25, 1989, his maternal grandfather, his paternal great-grandmother, and an infant brother, Randy Lee Worley. Mr. Worley is survived by his mother, Wesley Worley, of the home; his maternal grandmother, Oklahoma City, Okla.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Services will be held March 29 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home in Atchison. Burial will be in Holton Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to Theatre Atchison in memory of Sherrod.
Falley
Elizabeth Jeanette (Jean) Falley, 76, Topeka, died March 25, 2001 at a local hospital. She was born May 4, 1925, the daughter of William C. and Rose Elizabeth (Hawks) McFadden. She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church. She married Bert Falley on Sept. 21, 1961 at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Topeka. He survives. A son, Lewis Bill, preceded her in death on March 26, 1986. Other survivors include a son, Bert Falley II, Topeka; a daughter, Margaret Bartell, Dillon, Colo.; a brother, William H. McFadden, Topeka; and seven grandchildren. Mass of Christina Burial will be held at 11 a.m. March 29 at Holy Name Catholic Church. Burial will be in Prairie Home Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to any of the following organizations: Holy Name Catholic Church, Hayden High School, The Boys and Girls Clubs of Topeka, Let’s Help, The Salvation Army, or The Topeka Rescue Mission, sent in care of the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home.
Newlin
James Calvin “Cal” Newlin, 90, Sabetha, died March 25, 2001 at a Sabetha nursing home. He was born July 22, 1910 in the Wetmore community, the son of Edward and Daisy White Newlin. As a high school student, he moved to Sabetha with his parents, two sisters and a brother. He graduated from Sabetha High School in 1928. Representing Nemaha County in 1943, Cal, a father of three daughters, was one of 32 fathers drafted into service where he spent two years as a naval gunner in World War II in the Pacific theatre. He worked for the U.S. Post Office in Sabetha for 32 years and for 10 years as a clerk at Davis Hardware in Sabetha. He was a past master of the Sabetha Masonic Lodge, a lifetime member of the Sabetha VFW and a member of the United Methodist Church. He married Lila Mary Brougher on June 23, 1933. She survives. Other survivors include three daughters, Jeanine Hannah, Sun City West, Ariz., Judith Hanna, San Antonio, Texas, and Karen Bailey, Loveland, Colo.; a son, Gregory Newlin, Sabetha; four sisters, Della Hinkle, Holton, Doris Calwell, Topeka, Bernice Lichty, Long Beach, Calif., and Lois Bassett, Phoenix, Ariz.; a brother, Carroll Newlin, Dexter; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents and a sister, Geneva Brenner, Gothenburg, Neb. Services were held March 28 at Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha with Masonic service to follow. Interment was in Sabetha Cemetery
with military honors conducted by the VFW Post 7285 of Sabetha. Memorial contributions may be made to Sabetha Community Hospital or Sabetha Methodist Church, sent in care of the funeral home.
Platz
Gertrude E. Platz, 90, Leonardville, died March 25, 2001 at home. She was born June 22, 1910 west of Leonardville, the daughter of Ludwig and Bettie Zeisser Hoerman. She later lived in Abilene and Hutchinson. She was a registered nurse. She had been a student health nurse at Hutchinson Community College before she retired in 1979. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Leonardville. She married Charles R. Platz on Feb. 23, 1933. He preceded her in death on Jan. 5, 1988. Survivors include two sons, Charles E. Platz, Iowa City, Iowa, and Robert D. Platz, Frederick, Md.; a twin sister, Gladys Llewelyn, Leonardville; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Services were held March 28 at United Methodist Church in Leonardville. Graveside services were held in Holton Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church in Leonardville or to Homecare Hospice in Manhattan.
Harrison
Frankie Jo Harrison, 34, Ft. Wayne, Indiana, died March 23 at her mother’s home in Coolidge, Texas. She was born April 9, 1966, in Seattle, Wash., the daughter of Franklin N. and Geraldine R. Green Harrison. She was a graduate of Lindale (Texas) High School and was a machinist with Tetra Pak, Inc. in Ft. Wayne. She had lived in Ft. Wayne for eight years, moving there from Lindale, Texas. She was in the U.S. Marine Corps two years. Survivors include a daughter, Josie Kara Harrison, Coolidge, Texas; her mother, Geraldine Casey, Coolidge, Texas; her father, Franklin N. Harrison, Mayetta; five sisters, Jeannine Johnson and Priscilla Wooley, both of Ft. Wayne, Patricia Harrison, Whitehouse, Texas, Jessica Jenkins, Chapel Hill, Texas, and Kathleen Casey, Coolidge, Texas; a brother, Stewart Casey, Tyler, Texas; 12 nieces and nephews; grandparents, Earl and Lois Johnson, Fort Wayne, Ind., and a grandfather, Lando Green, Mayetta. Funeral services were held March 28 at Pottawatomi Pentecostal Church on the Potawatomi reservation near Mayetta. Burial was in Wago Cemetery
on the reservation. Mercer Funeral Home in Holton was in charge of arrangements.
