Bertha Russell
PARSONS - Bertha Vivian "Biddy" Russell, 95, formerly of Moline, Sedan and Howard, died Dec. 19, 1999, at Good Samaritan Center in Parsons.
Services were held at 1 p.m. Dec. 22, 1999, at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard. Lloyd G. Zimmerman officiated. Burial was in Grace Lawn Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with Good Samaritan Center in Parsons. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Russell was born July 30, 1904, in Moline, to James H. and Martha Jane (Pettigrew) Fouts. She attended school in Moline until moving with her family to Howard in 1916. She graduated from Howard High School in 1921.
She was employed at Reid & Cook Abstract Office in Eureka while attending Eureka School of Business. After graduating, she worked several years for Moore Abstract Co.
On Feb. 14, 1926, she married Dr. William Oliver Russell in Eureka. They lived in Kansas City, Kan., where her husband was a dental school resident, until moving to Sedan in 1927.
Russell assisted her husband in his dental office; worked as a reporter for The Sedan Times-Star; was a secretary for Holroyd Abstract Co.; and was a fiscal officer for the Chautauqua County Welfare Department.
Her husband died Feb. 5, 1955.
She moved to Howard in 1962 and was employed as an assistant to Dr. Berthelson and was elected to serve two years as probate judge in Elk County.
In 1968 she moved to Grand Junction, Colo., where she worked as a home caregiver and secretary for the Museum of Western Colorado. She later served as a volunteer at Ratekin Towers and Museum in Grand Junction where she was honored as a volunteer of the year.
Russell had been active in the Federated Tuesday Study Club, Business and Professional Women and Coterie Club, all of Sedan, and a member of the United Methodist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Virginia Emrich, Grand Junction, and Jeannette Lowe and Nadine Schnackenberg, both of Shell Knob, Mo.; two stepsisters, Opel Blunk, Chanute, and Bernadine McDonald, Nebraska; 10 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Anna Spresser
EMPORIA - Anna Amelia Spresser, 87, formerly of Winfield, died Dec. 21, 1999, at Holiday Resort in Emporia.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Name Catholic Church in Winfield. The Rev. Michael Maybrier will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
A Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Memorial Chapel. Friends may call at the funeral home until 6.
Spresser was born Aug. 24, 1912, in Angelus to John and Amelia Kamphaus.
On June 26, 1932, she married Edward N. Spresser in Selden. He died in 1975.
From 1932 to 1989 Spresser lived in Winfield where she worked as a cosmetologist at Kerr's until her retirement in 1962.
She volunteered at William Newton Memorial Hospital and helped with voter registration. She was a member of Holy Name Altar Society and Women for the Democratic Party.
Survivors include a son, Charles E. Spresser, Fall River; two daughters, Anna M. Powell, Fall River, and Norma Jean Reeves, Lecompton; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Margaret Austin
ARKANSAS CITY - Margaret May Austin, 82, of Arkansas City, died Dec. 21, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. The Rev. Ken Davidson will officiate. Private burial services will be in Parker Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the American Lung Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Austin was born June 23, 1917, in Winfield, to George and Elsie (Bonesteel) Naw. She was raised and educated in Winfield.
On Nov. 8, 1934, she married John Howard Austin in Winfield. They made their home in Silverdale. A homemaker, Austin was a longtime member of the Silverdale Community Church.
Her husband and a son, Fred Austin, preceded her in death.
Survivors include two sons, Howard B. Austin and Thomas C. Austin, both of Arkansas City; two daughters, Barbara Joyce Hockenbury, Silverdale, and Martha Howell, Winfield; two sisters, Frances Marts, Oklahoma City, and Louise Simmons, Winfield; 17 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, two stepgreat-grandchildren and one stepgreat-great-grandchild.
Leroy Brake
MAPLE CITY - Services for A. Leroy Brake, 63, who died Dec. 18, 1999, were held at 2 p.m. Dec. 22 in Maple City Cemetery. The Rev. Jeff Fletcher officiated.
Vocal music included "One Day at a Time" and "Precious Memories," presented by Jim Phillips, Lynn Phillips and Larry Hooper.
Honorary casket bearers were Scott Allen, Ronnie Browning, Lloyd Casebolt, Farrell Edwards, Fred Haynes, Don Mashburn, Ron Mashburn, Bill McKimson, Dale Phillips and Mike Spaulding.
Memorials have been established with Hospice Inc. and the American Cancer Society.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Darla Minkler
Darla Fay Minkler, 63, of 1115 Howland, Winfield, died Dec. 21, 1999, at Sumner County Regional Medical Center in Wellington.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.
A memorial has been established with the Make A Wish Foundation. Contributions may be made at the funeral home.
Minkler was born Jan. 1, 1936, in Taloga, Okla., to Jonathon J. and Corinda Alice (Boose) Koehn. She attended Taloga schools and graduated from Enid (Okla.) High School.
On Feb. 20, 1955, she married John H. Minkler in Enid.
Minkler graduated from Cowley County Community College and Wesley School of Nursing in Wichita. She was a registered nurse at St. Luke's Hospital in Wellington for many years.
Her husband died July 30, 1970.
Survivors include two sons, Larry Minkler, Shawnee, and John Minkler, Winfield; a daughter, Jeannette Minkler, Winfield; two brothers, Don Koehn, Garden City, and Jerry Koehn, El Reno, Okla.; a sister, Sonja Bloom, Charleston, S.C.; and four grandchildren.
A son, Wayne Patrick Minkler, preceded her in death.
Iver Hutchinson
ARKANSAS CITY - Iver Ray "Bud" Hutchinson, 77, of Arkansas City, died Dec. 21, 1999, at Medicalodge North Post Acute Care Center.
Cremation has been effected. There will be no service.
A memorial has been established with Medicalodge North. Contributions may be made through Hawks Funeral Home.
Hutchinson was born June 1, 1922, in Earlton, to Ivor Rice and Lottie May (Cassingham) Hutchinson. He was raised in the Chanute area.
During World War II and the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army. After his discharge, he moved to Arkansas City.
Hutchinson had been a truck driver and retired from the Arkansas City Street Department.
Survivors include his companion of 18 years, Loretta Blackshere, Arkansas City; a son, Ivor Roy "Butch" Hutchinson, Winfield; three daughters, Dianna Waltz, Chillicothe, Mo., Patty Degario, Chanute, and Judy McGee, Victorville, Calif.; a brother, Max Lamonti Hutchinson, Wichita; two sisters, Marion Pearl Dickey, Knoxville, Tenn., and Gwendolyn Vea Young, LaLuz, N.M.; 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Thelma Witter
NEWTON - Thelma Witter, 91, of Newton, formerly of Winfield, died Dec. 21, 1999, at Friendly Acres Retirement Community in Newton.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Fairlawn Burial Park in Hutchinson. The Revs. Don Swender and Henry Murray will officiate. Petersen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials have been established with Trinity Heights United Methodist Church and Friendly Acres Retirement Community.
Witter was born Sept. 13, 1908, in Hutchinson, to Frank W. and Elizabeth (Jones) Monzingo.
On Nov. 21, 1931, she married Dr. J.C. Witter. He died Sept. 2, 1999.
Witter, who received her teaching credentials at Sterling College, taught music at Jetmore from 1929 to 1935; Fowler from 1951 to 1952; Niotaze from 1955 to 1956; and Winfield's Whittier Elementary School from 1957 to 1974.
She was a member of Trinity Heights United Methodist Church, Retired Teachers Association, Association of American University Women, United Methodist Women and Friendly Acres Choir and Activities Association.
Survivors include a daughter, Maridene Akin, Crested Butte, Colo., and five grandchildren. A son, Bill Witter, preceded her in death.
Daisy Greer
ARKANSAS CITY - Daisy Anna Greer, 94, of Arkansas City, died Dec. 22, 1999, from injuries received in an automobile accident which also claimed the life of her companion, Phillip Shook.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Mission Cemetery
near Shawnee, Okla.
A memorial has been established with the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center Auxiliary. Contributions may be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.
Greer was born Sept. 17, 1905, near Tecumseh, Okla., to George Washington and Lucinda (Dunlop) Clark. She was raised and educated in the Tecumseh, Shawnee and Moore areas.
On June 14, 1924, she married Henry L. Greer in Shawnee. They lived in Tecumseh for several years, then in Tulsa a short time before moving to Arkansas City in 1940.
A homemaker, she was an active member of the First Baptist Church and the Gleaners Sunday school class. She was a longtime member of the Green Thumb Garden Club, Royal Neighbors, Spencer-Ralston Post 1254 Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and Democratic Women's Club.
Greer served on the election board for 41 years. She was a longtime member of the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center Auxiliary, a 50-year volunteer for the American Red Cross and a 37-year worker for the American Red Cross canteen.
Survivors include a son, Ralph Greer, Wichita; seven grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
Her husband and two daughters, Ruth Greer and Carrie Lee Vickery, preceded her in death.
