Arlene Kennedy

PASO ROBLES, Calif. - Arlene Mae (Farney) Kennedy, 76, of Paso Robles, formerly of Winfield, died Dec. 20, 1999, at Twin Cities Community Hospital in Templeton, Calif.

Private burial will be in Paso Robles Community Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with the Alzheimer's Foundation, the San Luis Obispo Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary and the U.S. Army Relief Fund.

Kennedy was born Jan. 21, 1923, in Winfield, to Dewey Clayton and Mary Elizabeth (Mason) Farney. She and her future husband, George Kennedy, met in front of the First National Bank in 1942. On Aug. 19, 1943, they were married at Fort Sill, Okla. Her husband had completed artillery officer candidate school and was assigned to Camp Roberts in Paso Robles.

In 1946 they returned to Winfield. When her husband returned to active duty in the Army, they lived in the Panama Canal Zone for several years. They returned to the United States in 1954 and lived in Chicago for a year and a half. They later lived in Japan before moving to California.

She had been in long-term care facilities for four years.

Kennedy was a former member of the Order of Eastern Star, Coral Chapter 3 of Gatun, Panama Canal Zone; and was a member of the SLO Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband, George Kennedy, Paso Robles; two daughters, Marsha Hower, Mountlake Terrace, Wash., and Deborah Kennedy, Paso Robles; two grandsons and two great-grandsons.

Veryl Moon

Services for Veryl Archer Rowe Moon, 91, who died Dec. 19, 1999, were held at 10 a.m. Dec. 23 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Revs. Blake Orr and Ellie Foster officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Music included "How Great Thou Art" and "Amazing Grace."

Honorary casket bearers were David Anglemyer, Jerome Anglemyer, Martin Moon and Michael Moon.

Casket bearers were Bryan Rowe, Curtis Rowe, Kraig Rowe, Marcus Rowe, Michael Rowe and Gary Shutt.

Contributions in Moon's memory may be made to any charity.

Bill Powers

A service of celebration of the life of J.W. "Bill" Powers, 94, who died Dec. 13, 1999, was held at 2 p.m. Dec. 16 at Grace United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jerre Nolte officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Louise Schuppener was the organist and pianist, and James Schuppener was the soloist. Music included "God's Time Is Best," "Going Home," "His Eyes Are on the Sparrow" and "On Eagle's Wings."

Honorary casket bearers were Ned Graham, Ralph Hanna, Gerald Raines and Bill Stephens.

Casket bearers were Greg Rollin McNeish, Jerry Alan McNeish, G. Thomas McNeish, Marya Jeanne McNeish, James Rolland Powers, Lou Ann Davenport and Cheryl Ruth Powers.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Ivan Barg

EUREKA - Ivan Maynard Barg, 81, of rural Eureka, died Dec. 25, 1999, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Pleasant View Cemetery south of Eureka. The Rev. Tony Pameticky will officiate.

A memorial has been established with the Center for Basic Cancer Research at Kansas State University. Contributions may be left at Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Barg was born on a farm south of Eureka to Edward Knutson and Ellen Marie (Johnson) Barg. He attended rural school in Greenwood County.

Barg, a longtime farmer, was first married to Mary Ball.

He later married Ruth Evelyn (Vanderpool) Ward. She died Nov. 16, 1997.

Survivors include a son, Gary D. Barg, Eureka; two daughters, Ramona Kay Douglass, Wichita, and Lois Jean Harman, Great Bend; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A son, Larry Dee Barg, preceded him in death.

Ronald Carrell

Ronald Carrell, 66, of Winfield, died Dec. 18, 1999, at Cumbernauld Village in Winfield.

Memorial services were held at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 22 at Trinity Lutheran Church. Military committal services were in Highland Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with Trinity Lutheran Church and the National Parkinson's Foundation. Contributions may be made at the church or Miles Funeral Service.

Carrell was born Aug. 21, 1933, in Moline, to Harold and Viola (Cox) Carrell. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in electrical engineering.

A retired Air Force master sergeant, he served in occupied Germany at the close of World War II and in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was fluent in Russian and learned to converse in several other languages. While serving in the Air Force, he was a translator/interviewer for 10 years. He was then employed for the military as an operator at nuclear power plants.

Following his discharge, he moved to Philadelphia and worked for an engineering firm.

On June 30, 1989, he married Dava Dumler Simonton in Winfield. They lived in Winfield where Carrell taught part time for Cowley County Civil Defense.

Survivors include his wife, Dava Carrell, Winfield; a son, Michael William Carrell, Middleton, R.I.; two daughters, Christina Lutz, Sellersville, Pa., and Kim Shelby, Encinitis, Calif.; two stepsons, Charles Simonton, Washington, D.C., and Troy Simonton, Olathe; two stepdaughters, Marsha Sawyer, Rome, Pa., and Mona Anz, Carney, Okla.; a sister, Billie Lou Holman, Winfield; seven grandchildren and 14 stepgrandchildren.

Mabel Crabtree

ELDON, Mo. - Mabel Amelia Crabtree, 86, of Eldon, died Dec. 25, 1999, at St. Mary's Health Center in Jefferson City, Mo.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Highland Cemetery at Winfield. The Rev. K.B. Murray will officiate.

Visitation will be until 5 p.m. today at Rekus Funeral Home in Eldon.

Memorial contributions can be made to Eldon Healthcare, Eldon, Mo.

Crabtree was born July 25, 1913, in Langdon, N.D., to Oscar and Lottie (Agar) Rutherford.

On Nov. 15, 1952, she married Delbert Crabtree in Winfield. He died in 1980.

She was a former resident of Winfield and a member of Millington Street Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Rhuman, Clackamas, Ore.; a brother, Ray Rutherford, Winfield; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Betty M. Sexton, died in 1996.

Zachariah Cross

Zachariah Henry Cross, 21, of 421 E. 13th, Winfield, died Dec. 26, 1999, at his home.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Ronald McDonald Houses.

Cross was born July 5, 1978, in Winfield, to Mark Steven and Mary Goodaile Cross. He was raised and educated in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School.

He had been employed in several local restaurants and had worked for Paradise Gardens and with a roofing service.

Survivors include a daughter, Candase Renne' Cross, Winfield; his parents, Mark Steven Cross, Arkansas, and Richard and Mary Weller, Winfield; four brothers, Mark Moss, Wichita, Steve Moss, Atwood, and Matthew Weller and Richard Weller IV, both of Winfield; three sisters, Mary Battles and Tericka Benjamin, both of Arkansas, and Martha Miller, Wichita; and his grandparents, Martha Goodaile and Richard and Rita Weller, all of Winfield.

Raymond Divine

HOWARD - Raymond Adrain Divine, 84, longtime resident of rural Howard, died Dec. 23, 1999, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Dec. 27 in Grace Lawn Cemetery. The Rev. Kibum Kim officiated. Lloyd G. Zimmerman sang "In the Garden" and "In the Sweet Bye and Bye."

A memorial has been established with the Howard United Methodist Church. Contributions may be left at Zimmerman Funeral Home.

Divine was born Dec. 3, 1915, on a farm north of Howard, to George Washington and Pella Lee (Martin) Divine. The Divine family has owned the farm for more than 100 years.

He attended rural Elk County schools and graduated from Howard High School in 1935. He was a member of the high school football and track teams.

On Oct. 21 1934, he married Phyllis Mae Jones at Hamilton. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year.

A farmer, rancher and carpenter, he was a member of the Howard United Methodist Church, Howard Alumni Association and Kansas Farm Bureau.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Divine, rural Howard; a son, Randy Divine, Tulsa; a daughter, Connie Claypool, Wichita; and a grandson.

Fernita Jacob

LYNDON - Fernita E. Jacob, 85, formerly of Winfield, died Dec. 22, 1999, at Overbrook Nursing Home in Lyndon.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 27 at Feltner Chapel in Lyndon. Burial was in Evergreen Mound Cemetery near Ottawa.

A memorial has been established with the First Christian Church of Overbrook.

Jacob was born Aug. 4, 1914, in Winfield, to Ivan and Agnes (Rule) Stout.

On Feb. 22, 1942, she married Robert Jacob in Mulvane. He died July 19, 1996.

Jacob had lived in the Argentine area of Kansas City, Kan., since 1975. She had been a seamstress for a coat factory in Kansas City.

Survivors include a brother, Shirley Stout, Winfield; and three sisters, Elizabeth Shisler and Dorothy Johnson, both of Wichita, and Margaret Stamper, Florence, Ala.
