John Neal
John D. Neal, 84, a resident of Good Samaritan Village in Winfield, died Dec. 24, 1999, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Neal was born Oct. 23, 1915, in Winfield, to LeRoy Dee and Myrtle (Karaker) Neal. He was educated in rural Winfield schools.
On Oct. 12, 1940, he married Lois Walker in Wichita, and they made their home in Winfield. His wife died Oct. 14, 1983.
Neal worked at flour mills in Winfield and Wichita. He had been a member of the Winfield Sportsmen's Club.
Survivors include two sons, Charles Neal, Wichita, and Norman Neal, Denver, and a granddaughter.
Marguerite Peyton
SEVERY - Marguerite Roberta Peyton, 87, longtime resident of Severy, died Dec. 25, 1999, at Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Severy United Methodist Church. The Rev. Kibum Kim will officiate. Burial will be in South Lawn Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with the Severy United Methodist Church and Severy Senior Citizens Center. Contributions may be left at Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
Peyton was born Nov. 30, 1912, at Severy, to David Lawrence and Mattie Julia (Norton) Hathaway. She graduated from Severy High School in 1931 and attended Wichita School of Cosmetology. She then moved to El Dorado where she and her sister, Fern, owned and operated Crystal Beauty Shop.
On Aug. 2, 1936, she married Clyde Allen Peyton at Severy. They made their home in El Dorado until purchasing the grocery store at Severy in 1946. After the death of her husband on July 17, 1963, Peyton continued operating the grocery store until selling it in 1978.
Peyton was a member of Columbia Chapter 142 Order of Eastern Star and the American Legion Auxiliary of Carter-Rader Post 149, both at Howard. She was also a member of Cosmos Club at Severy and a longtime member of the Severy United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women.
She is survived by her daughter, Carol Brown, Severy; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
James Carpenter
James Carpenter, 55, of 1503 Menor, Winfield, died Dec. 25, 1999, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Central Baptist Church. The Rev. Ken Beckner will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Carpenter was born Aug. 19, 1944, in Winfield, to Bud Emmett and Madeline (Kendrick) Carpenter.
On Nov. 15, 1970, he married Donna Calvin in Arkansas City.
He worked as a security guard for Burns Security Co. in Wichita.
Survivors include his wife, Donna Carpenter, and two daughters, Kathy Wirtz and Stacy Carpenter, all of Winfield; and a brother, Larry Carpenter, Cincinnati, Ohio.
Bula Hendrickson
MERRIAM - Bula Henson Hendrickson, 97, of Merriam, formerly of Wellington and Winfield, died Dec. 15, 1999, at Shawnn Gardens Nursing Center.
Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Highland Cemetery
at Winfield.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hawks Funeral Home, Wellington.
A memorial has been established with the First United Methodist Church of Wellington. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Hendrickson was born Nov. 5, 1902, in Cane Creek, Mo., to Riley and Della Photine (Smith) Henson. After graduating from high school, she was a reporter for the Daily American Republic in Poplar Bluff, Mo.
On Feb. 18, 1928, she married Clyde Houston Hendrickson in Fredricktown, Mo.
During World War II, she was an agricultural extension instructor, teaching food processing techniques. The Hendricksons lived in various Missouri and Arkansas towns before moving to Winfield in 1944. In 1955 they moved to Wellington. She operated Bula's Ceramics and, along with her husband, Hendrickson Tax Service.
Her husband died July 5, 1986. Hendrickson moved to Merriam in 1992.
She was a past worthy matron of the Order of Eastern Star in Poplar Bluff and past district director of Kansas Business and Professional Women, as well as a member of numerous social clubs and organizations.
Survivors include a son, Marshall David Hendrickson, Merriam; a brother, Hardin O. Witte, Poplar Bluff, Mo.; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mary Kovach
TRENTON, Mich. - Mary R. Kovach, 80, of Trenton, died Dec. 10, 1999, in Trenton.
Services were held Dec. 13 at Our Lady of the Woods Catholic Church. Martenson Funeral Home, Trenton, was in charge of arrangements.
Kovach's husband, Joseph, preceded her in death.
Survivors include two sons, Daniel Kovach and James Kovach; three daughters, Mary Schneider, Arkansas City, Donna Yacuone and Linda Mateja; 17 grandchildren, including David Schneider, Derby, Laura Hankins, Burden, and Amy Lawson, Arkansas City; 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Darla Minkler
Services for Darla Fay Minkler, 63, who died Dec. 21, 1999, were held at 10 a.m. Dec. 27 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. John Stone officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
Vocal music included "Ave Maria," "Amazing Grace" and "Peace in the Valley."
Casket bearers were Larry Barnes, Todd Cirks, Kent Delong, Charles Miller, Stan Potter and Todd Rush.
A memorial has been established with the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Lola Jones
CASTRO VALLEY, Calif. - Lola V. Jones, 85, of Castro Valley, died Dec. 27, 1999, in Edens Hospital.
Services will be held in Chapel of the Chimes in Hayward, Calif., with burial there.
Jones was born on a farm north of Cambridge on March 2, 1914, to William A. and Ethyl P. Mathews.
She taught school in the Cambridge area and later in Castro Valley.
In July 1951 she married Lewis Jones. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include two sons, Thomas Jones, Roseville, Calif., and Robert Jones, Seattle; a brother, Paul Mathews, Winfield, a niece, Lucille Bailey, Burden; and a granddaughter.
Elmer Braun
ARKANSAS CITY - Elmer Braun, 68, of Arkansas City, died Dec. 28, 1999, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery
chapel. Jesse A. Kindred will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Braun was born Sept. 11, 1931, in Enid, Okla., to Abe K. and Gertrude (Toews) Braun. He was raised and educated in Enid.
During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army with the Thunderbirds of the 45th Infantry Division.
Since 1955 Braun had lived in Arkansas City. He was a retired welder for the Total refinery.
Braun was a member of Spencer Ralston Post 1254, Veterans of Foreign Wars; Shelton Beaty Post 18, American Legion; Cowley County Amateur Radio Club; the National Rifle Association and Ducks Unlimited.
Survivors include a son, Garry Braun, Dexter; a daughter, Charlotte Tennant, Wichita; two sisters, Dorothy Balzer and Esther Kliewer, both of Enid; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Dorothy Charlton
Dorothy R. Charlton, formerly of Newton, died Dec. 29, 1999, in Winfield.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Greenwood Cemetery
at Newton.
Petersen's Family Funeral Home of Newton is in charge of arrangements.
Zachariah Cross
Services for Zachariah Henry Cross, 21, who died Dec. 26, 1999, were held at 11 a.m. Dec. 29 at Miles Funeral Service. James French officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
Casket bearers were Mary Battles, Martha Miller, Mark Moss, Matthew Weller, Richard Weller III and Richard Weller IV.
A memorial has been established with Ronald McDonald Houses.
