Betty Franks

TULSA - Betty Jean Franks, 75, of Tulsa, died Dec. 25, 1999.

Services were held Dec. 28 at Heath Griffith Memory Chapel in Tulsa. The Rev. Chuck Burton officiated. Burial was in Floral Haven Memorial Gardens.

Casket bearers were Jimmy Franks, Ben Giles, David White, Don Wickersham, Rick Fraley and Roger Bair.

Music selections were "Serenaded by Angels" and "Wish You Were Here."

Franks was born Feb. 10, 1924, in Winfield, to Arthur L. and Clara (King) Goodrich. She attended school in Cambridge for 10 years before graduating from high school in Leesville, La., in 1943.

On June 2, 1943, she married Orville J. Franks in Leesville while he was in the Army. Most of their 56 years of marriage were spent in Tulsa.

Survivors include her husband, Orville Franks, two daughters, Debra Giles and Janet White, and a stepson, Jim Franks, all of Tulsa; a sister, Eleanor Bair, Burden; and eight grandchildren.

Ralph Fry

Services for Ralph Dean Fry, 87, who died Jan. 3, 2000, were held at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 6 at the First United Methodist Church. The Revs. Rick Thornton and Fred Houston officiated.

Burial was in Highland Cemetery. Blue Lodge 110 Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Winfield conducted Masonic services.

Laura Belle Haines was the organist. Ed Larsen sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In the Garden."

Honorary casket bearers were Michael Alderman, Bruce Cardwell, Robert Cardwell, Herman Dietzsch, Ralph Harper, Hank Johnson and Joe Kelley.

Casket bearers were Abe Elam, Jason Frazier, Jim Fry, Henry Leake, Glen Scutter and Evert Shiever.

Memorials have been established with the First United Methodist Church and the Winfield Public Library.

Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Bobby King

REDFIELD, Ark. - Bobby Gene King, 58, of Redfield, formerly of Winfield, died Jan. 5, 2000, at his home.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Redfield Missionary Baptist Church. Brothers Bill Williams and John Mooney will officiate. Burial will be in Redfield Cemetery.

Friends may call at Cranford Funeral Home in White Hall, Ark., until 8 tonight.

Memorials have been established with the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 1400 W. Markham, Little Rock, AR 72201; the Arkansas Cancer Research Center, UAMS, 4301 W. Markham, Little Rock, AR 72205; and the St. Vincent Carti Unit, 2 St. Vincent Circle, Little Rock, AR 72205.

King was born July 17, 1941, in Brady, Texas, to Edd C. and Mary (Henderson) King. He was educated in Arkansas and Kansas and graduated from Winfield High School in 1959. From 1959 to 1962 he served in the U.S. Army.

On Sept. 1, 1962, he married Elaine Boyd.

King received a bachelor's degree in math from Sterling College in 1967 and took additional classes at Kansas State Teachers College.

He was a senior project leader for the Arkansas Department of Correction. He had previously been employed by National Bank of Commerce, Pine Bluff, Ark.; First National Bank & Trust, Great Bend; Emporia State Bank and NCR Corp. of Hutchinson.

He had taught business and banking at Barton County Community College in Great Bend and math at a Catholic school in Oden.

King was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church, American Legion Post 343, Southeast Arkansas Regional Planning Commission and many other organizations.

Survivors include his wife, Elaine King, and a son, Steven King, both of Redfield; a daughter, Norma J. King, Pine Bluff; his mother, Mary Henderson King, and a brother, Edward King, both of Stephenville, Texas; and two sisters, Kathie Meador, Freeport, Texas, and Carolyn King, Stephenville.

Margaret Snell

A Mass of Christian Burial for Margaret Theresa Snell, 92, who died Jan. 1, 2000, was celebrated at 10 a.m. Jan. 5 at Holy Name Catholic Church. The Rev. Michael Maybrier officiated. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery.

A Rosary service was held at 8 p.m. Jan. 4 at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Memorial Chapel.

Organist was Dorothy Groene, song leader was Bill Chamberland and vocalist was Cheryl Freeman. Music selections were "Ave Maria," "Amazing Grace," " On Eagle's Wings," "How Great Thou Art" and "Song of Farewell."

Casket bearers were Daniel, Timothy, Kevin, Walter and Duane Snell, Robert, Bradley, Diane and Dereice Hoheisel, Donna Bunyard, Cathi Maynard, Mori Mohr, Janice Schlichting, Lori Offutt, Rhonda Anawalt, Patricia Moore, Deborah Layne, Cheryl Freeman and Elizabeth Sponauer.

Memorials have been established with Holy Name Catholic Church and Good Samaritan Village.

Sam Welty

OXFORD - Sam Welty of Oxford died Jan. 6, 2000, in Oxford.

Services will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Oliver-Hawks Funeral Home.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Rhea Wise

PONCA CITY - Rhea Ruth Wise, 81, of Ponca City, died Jan. 5, 2000, at Tender Heart Health Care, Ponca City.

Her service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Newkirk Cemetery. The Rev. Cliff Fite will officiate. There will be no viewing. Miller-Stahl Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with Hospice of Ponca City, 1904 N. Union, Suite 103, Ponca City, OK 74601.

Wise was born Aug. 6, 1918, in Blackwell, to William Stephen and Ruth Ellen (Manahan) Beavers. She attended Excelsior rural school and Blackwell High School.

She married Bill Walker in Blackwell, and they made their home in California before returning to Blackwell.

Several years later she married Beryl Cletus Wise Sr., and they made their home in Ponca City. He died in 1986. In 1987 she moved to Tender Heart Health Care.

A homemaker, Wise was a longtime member of the Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Richard S. Walker, Raeford, N.C.; a brother, Marion Beavers, Ponca City; and a sister, Genevere Clements, Huffman, Texas.

Raymond Burdick

Raymond O. Burdick, 67, of Winfield, died Jan. 7, 2000.

Memorials have been established with the American Cancer Association. Hillside Funeral Home East had charge of arrangements.

Burdick was in the maintenance department at Coleman Evcon.

Survivors include his wife, Dovie Burdick, Winfield; two daughters, Ruth Wisdom, Winfield, and Lela Burdick, Wichita; brothers, Lawrence Burdick, Davis. Calif.; two sisters, Lela Taylor, Haileyville, Okla., and Beverly Vestal, Texas; and two grandchildren.

Philip French

ARKANSAS CITY - Philip E. French, 59, of Arkansas City, died Jan. 6, 2000, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Arkansas City.

Cremation has been effected. Hawks Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

French was born Sept. 1, 1940, in Carthage, Mo., to Granville William and Medah (Tarvin) French. The family moved to Arkansas City in 1944 and later to Wichita where he graduated from Wichita West High School.

In 1962 he married Gwen Sailor in Arvada, Colo. To this union was born a daughter, Justine.

On March 27, 1982, he married Marsha Blevens in Winfield. For several years they lived in Tahlequah, Okla., where he worked at Reasor's Grocery. In 1995 they moved to Arkansas City where he worked at Dillons. He had worked in the grocery business for 20 years. For the last year, he had worked at the Comfort Inn in Winfield.

He served as a minister of Jehovah's Witnesses for 42 years and had been an elder of the local congregation for many years.

He was an award-winning artist throughout the area, including the Denton Art Center's "Barn Again!" competition. He was also the author of "Phil's World Phantom Cartoonist" for the Summit Up weekly newspaper in Arkansas City.

Survivors include his wife, Marsha French, Arkansas City; a daughter, Justine Brewer, Colorado Springs; a stepson, Tyrone Spielman, Emporia, two stepdaughters, Sonyia Mantz, Wichita, and Denise Smith, Winfield; two brothers, Robert G. French and James J. French, both of Oxford; three sisters, Jesselyn Rice Goosetree, Palm Desert, Calif., Katheryn Simonson, Tulsa, and Alice McCormick, Tahlequah; and nine grandchildren.

Bobby King

Three memorials were suggested for Bobby Gene King, 58, who died Jan. 5, 2000, in Redfield, Ark.

However, the family has asked that the Muscular Dystrophy Association be removed from the list. Instead, they want to add the Multiple Sclerosis National Society, 1100 N. University Ave., Little Rock, AR 72207.

Sam Welty

OXFORD - Sam L. Welty, 53, of Oxford, died Jan. 6, 2000, in Oxford.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Oliver-Hawks Funeral Home. The Rev. Curtis Fike will officiate. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 8 p.m.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Welty was born Aug. 17, 1946, in El Dorado, to Lloyd Welty Sr. and Emma (French) Welty. He was raised in El Dorado and graduated from El Dorado High School and Butler County Community College.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

On June 20, 1975, he married Janis Howard in Wichita, after which they moved to Oxford. For the last 15 years he had worked at Hiland-Steffen Dairy Foods as a pasteurizer.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Oxford Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Janis Welty, Oxford; a son, Bob Welty, Manhattan; a daughter, Julie Welty, Ottawa; a brother, Lloyd Welty Jr., Rock Springs, Wyo.; and a sister, Mary Jane Randall, Harlingen, Texas.
