Bessie White
ROSE HILL - Bessie M. White, 79, of Rose Hill, died Jan. 13, 2000, in Rose Hill.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Douglass Cemetery. Pastor Tiger Moses will officiate.
Friends may call at Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home in Douglass from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to noon Monday.
White was born Dec. 10, 1920, in Walnut Township, to John Allen and Ruth (Banfil) Cody. In 1946 she married Jefferson M. White in El Dorado. She was a homemaker.
Her husband and a son preceded her in death.
Survivors include two sons, John White, Leon, and Richard White, Texas; a daughter, Linda Spangler, Rose Hill; two brothers, Frank Cody, El Dorado, and Walter Cody, Augusta; two sisters, Alice Hollingsworth, Wichita, and Hazel Mauk, Augusta; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Barbara Bazil
ARKANSAS CITY - Barbara Ann Bazil, 64, of Arkansas City, died Jan. 14, 2000, at Medicalodge East Health Care Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Parker Cemetery. The Rev. H. Dean LaVelle will officiate.
A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc. Contributions may be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.
Bazil was born April 2, 1935, in Arkansas City, to Roy and Edna M. (Norris) Hagan. She was raised in Arkansas City and graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1953.
On June 19, 1970, she married Carlos Bazil in in Winfield. They made their home in Arkansas City.
Bazil worked as a surgical technician at William Newton Memorial Hospital for 15 years and later was a custodian for the Arkansas City school district until her retirement.
Survivors include her husband, Carlos Bazil, Arkansas City; two sons, Russell C. Bazil, Winfield, and Mark L. Bazil, Newkirk; two daughters, Carla M. Reger, Arkansas City, and Miranda Whittaker, Newkirk; two brothers, Roy A. Hagan, Colorado Springs, and Thomas A. Hagan, Arkansas City; four sisters, Lila McEwen and Collene Bailey, both of Arkansas City, Anna Weekley, Portland, and Lurlene Bogguss, San Antonio, Texas; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Bertha Bohannon
CEDAR VALE - Bertha L. Bohannon, 94, of Cedar Vale, died Jan. 15, 2000, at Cedar Vale Community Hospital.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Cedar Vale Cemetery. The Rev. Stanley Upchurch will officiate.
Friends may call at Wheeler Funeral Home of Cedar Vale until 8 tonight.

Bohannon was born July 13, 1905, in Cedar Vale, to John and Annie Lorene (Cochran) Duncan. She was raised in Cedar Vale and graduated from Cedar Vale High School in 1924 as class valedictorian. She graduated from Pittsburg State University in 1928.
On May 18, 1929, she married Carl Bohannon in Cedar Vale.
Bohannon taught in area schools for many years and later served as city treasurer. She retired from the Cedar Vale Farmers Cooperative where she was in charge of bookkeeping.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church and Order of Eastern Star 268 and was also active in numerous community organizations.
Survivors include her husband, Carl Bohannon, Cedar Vale; two sons, Don Bohannon, Leon, and Reese Bohannon, Wichita; two sisters, Maxine Magnus and Pat Bailey, both of Cedar Vale; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Coma Jones
Coma Irene Jones, 90, longtime Winfield resident, died Jan. 15, 2000, at Cumbernauld Village.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Arkansas City.
Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 4 to 8 p.m. today.
A memorial has been established with the Total Health Care Facility at Cumbernauld Village. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Jones was born Oct. 22, 1909, in Atkins, Ark., to P.R. and Bennie (Johnson) Lazenby. She was educated in Atkins schools and graduated from Atkins High School.
She attended Arkansas Tech at Russellville, Ark., and completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in education at Southwestern College. She received her master's degree in education from Emporia State College.
On June 12, 1935, she married D.B. Jones in Atkins. They lived in Oregon during World War II. After the war, they moved to Winfield where Jones began teaching in rural schools. She also taught at Akron and Udall and in Winfield at Bryant and Lowell elementary schools.
Jones was a member of the National Education Association, Retired Teachers Association, Christian Women's Club and First Presbyterian Church.
Her husband died in 1976.
Survivors include a son, Byron Jones, Winfield; and two granddaughters.
Gilbert Wells
UDALL - Gilbert E. Wells, 82, of Udall, died Jan. 15, 2000, at Medicalodge of Douglass.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Faith Lutheran Church in Derby. The Rev. Richard Boyer will officiate. Burial will be in Ninnescah Cemetery
at Udall.
Friends may call at Smith Mortuary of Derby until 8 tonight.
Memorials have been established with Medicalodge of Douglass, Faith Lutheran Church and the Alzheimer's Association.
Wells was born Aug. 31, 1917, in Mulvane and served in the U.S. Army.
A retired farmer, he was a former member of the Udall school board and the Udall co-op board and had been a leader in both 4-H and FFA.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Wells, Udall; two sons, Dale Wells, Derby, and Dan Wells, Udall; a brother, Marvin Wells, Rock; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Gail Brokaw
ARKANSAS CITY - Gail Beniah Brokaw, 82, of Arkansas City, died Jan. 11, 2000, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
Services were held at 1 p.m. Jan. 15 in the chapel of Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Pastor Mark McDonald officiated. Hawks Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Brokaw was born April 17, 1917, in Copan, Okla., to Jesse B. and Stella Mae (Snook) Brokaw. In 1926 the family moved to Arkansas City where Brokaw attended school.
He later moved to Wichita where he worked as the foreman of the laundry room at the Lasson Hotel for 30 years. In 1964, he returned to Arkansas City.
On July 1, 1973, he married Elva Pearl King Voorhees in Arkansas City. She died Jan. 10, 2000.
He was a member of the Church of God-Holiness.
Survivors include a brother, Jesse W. Brokaw, Ponca City; a twin sister, Gladys Wall, Arkansas City; and two stepgrandsons.
A stepdaughter, Mary Jo Tewell, preceded him in death.
Bessie McAlister
MOLINE - Bessie Violet McAlister, 95, longtime resident of the Moline area, died Jan. 16, 2000, in Sedan City Hospital.
Services will be held at 2 p.m Thursday at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard. Lloyd G. Zimmerman will officiate. Burial will be in Belknap Cemetery
south of Moline.
Memorials have been established with the Belknap Community Fund, Elk Manor Nursing Home in Moline and Elk Falls United Methodist Church.
McAlister was born Nov. 8, 1904, near Grenola, to Elmer Francis and Anna Belle (Mercer) Storms. She attended rural schools in the Grenola area.
On Dec. 26, 1923, she married Ralph Wilson McAlister in Howard. She was a homemaker.
McAlister was a member of the Elk Falls United Methodist Church and a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary in Grenola.
Survivors include a son, Melvin McAlister, Moline; six daughters, Phyllis Hawkins, Grenola, Darlene Stephenson, Sedan, Mary Osborn, Garfield, Ark., Karen Hey, Independence, Helen Yocham, Moline, and Wanda McAlister, Derby; 25 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Bill Still
William Perry "Bill" Still, 100, longtime Winfield resident, died Jan. 17, 2000, at Walnut Hill Nursing Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Still was born Nov. 23, 1899, in Exeter, Mo., to Daniel Asbury and Laura Belle (Lankford) Still. He moved to Kansas in 1916 with his parents and family. In 1919 they moved to Winfield where he was employed as a youth in area oil fields.
In 1949 he married Mae Smith in Denver, and they made their home in Winfield. His wife died June 9, 1968.
Still worked many years for various lumber companies in the Winfield area, including Comley Lumber, Shanklin & Cathcart Lumber Co., Patterson Lumber and Everett Lumber Co.
After retiring from Everly Lumber Co. in 1968, he was employed as a delivery man for Winfield Floral until 1983.
A resident of Winfield for over 80 years, Still was a longtime member of the International Order of Odd Fellows, Winfield Lodge 101.
Survivors include a nephew, Charles Russell, Ponca City; a niece, Leoma Gay, Winfield; and a great-nephew, Robert L. Russell, and a great-niece, Deborah Irene Russell, both of Ponca City.
