Doris Hammon
BELLE PLAINE - Doris (Utt) Hammon, 77, of Belle Plaine, died Jan. 23, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Joseph Campus in Wichita.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Belle Plaine. The Rev. Eugene Blake will officiate. Burial will be in Old Mission Cemetery
in Wichita.
Friends may call at Hatfield-Smith Funeral Home until 8 tonight.
A memorial has been established with the First Presbyterian Church.
Hammon was born Sept. 24, 1922, in Silverdale. She had been a bookkeeper for J.C. Penney.
A son, Elmer Lee Hammon, died in 1983.
Survivors include five brothers, Doyle Utt, Belle Plaine, Wayne Utt, Mulvane, Wade Utt, Hemet, Calif., Wendell Utt, Silverdale, and Kenneth Utt, Belle Plaine; a twin sister, Dora Howard, Ponca City; and one great-grandson.
Dorothy Leslie
COLORADO SPRINGS - Dorothy Leslie, 82, of Colorado Springs, formerly of Winfield, died Jan. 2, 2000, in Colorado Springs.
The body was cremated, and no service is planned. Mountain View Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
Leslie was born Jan. 16, 1917, in New Salem. In September 1975 she married Herbert Leslie. He preceded her in death.
Leslie had been a bookkeeper for Crawford Dental Labs.
Survivors include a daughter, Joan Cardwell, Colorado Springs, and two grandchildren.
Betty Bourne
Betty Bourne, 75, of 716 N. Tweed, Winfield, died at her home Jan. 25, 2000.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Wilmot Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday.
Memorials have been established with the Winfield Public Library, Cumbernauld Village Library and Hospice Inc. Contributions may be made at the libraries or funeral home.
Bourne was born July 6, 1924, on a farm near Wilmot, to LeRoy Earl and Mary (Stuber) Lewis. She attended the Floral grade school and graduated from Winfield High School in 1942.
On April 8, 1944, she married Owen Tucker, and they lived and farmed north of Winfield. He died Oct. 23, 1965. Following her husband's death, she began working as a secretary for Cowley County Farm Bureau Insurance where she worked until her retirement.
On Jan. 4, 1969, she married Wayne Bourne in Winfield. He died Nov. 6, 1997.
Bourne was a member of Grandview United Methodist Church. She recently attended vesper services at Cumbernauld Village and took part in a Bible study group.
Survivors include two daughters, Sheryl Clower and Dena Youle, both of Winfield; three brothers, Walter Lewis, Dee Lewis and Alan Lewis, all of Winfield; two sisters, Katherine Taylor, Douglass, and Marjorie Abel, Winfield; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and four stepgrandchildren.
Patrick Jones
WICHITA - Patrick Lon Jones, 50, of Wichita, formerly of Winfield, died Jan. 20, 2000.
A memorial service was held at 10 a.m. Jan. 25 at University Congregational Church. Downing & Lahey Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established with the University Congregational Church Music Fund, 9209 E. 29th St. North, Wichita, KS 67226.
Jones, a 1967 Winfield High School graduate, graduated magna cum laude from Wichita State University with a degree in music. He was a Southwestern Bell field maintenance supervisor as well as a University Congregational Church organist and a music teacher.
He worked with Cabaret Oldtown, Stage One and the annual Wichita journalists' "Gridiron" revue, among many musical activities.
Survivors include his mother, Edna Mercedes Jones, and a sister, Marsha Vestle, both of Wichita.
Deloris Lee
ARKANSAS CITY - Deloris Lee, 71, of Arkansas City, died Jan. 24, 2000, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Burial will be in the Atlanta cemetery.
The casket will remain closed at all times, but friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday to sign the register book.
A memorial has been established with the Atlanta United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made at the church or funeral home.
Lee was born Oct. 8, 1928, at Atlanta, to Elmo and Gertrude (Brannum) Groom. She graduated from Douglass High School in 1946.
On Feb. 4, 1949, she married Clifford Lee in Hutchinson. She attended cosmetology school in Wichita and worked as a cosmetologist from 1946 to 1950. From 1951 to 1974 they lived in Dodge City. They moved from Alabama to Augusta in 1984 and had made their home in Arkansas City since 1986.
Lee was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Ponca City.
Survivors include her husband, Clifford Lee, Arkansas City; two sons, James W. Lee, Wichita, and Kirby W. Lee, Neodesha; a daughter, Shari Lee Brown, Derby; a brother, Don Groom, Nowata, Okla.; and eight grandchildren.
Thelma Vandergriff
DOUGLASS - Thelma E. Vandergriff, 92, a retired dental assistant, died Jan. 22, 2000.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Douglass United Methodist Church. Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established with Douglass United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Burley Onon II, Colorado Springs, six grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
Freida Brewer
Services for Freida M. Brewer, 88, who died Jan. 23, 2000, were held at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 26 in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Fred Houston officiated, and "Going Home" was the music selection.
Burial was in Douglass Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the First United Methodist Church.
Doris Miles
BURDEN - Services for Doris Hilda Miles, 74, who died Jan. 22, 2000, were held at 2:30 p.m. Jan. 26 in Burden United Methodist Church. The Revs. Sheila Ratzlaff and David Broddle officiated. Burial was in Burden Cemetery.
Musicians included Barbara Shively, organ; Valerie Philips, piano; and Jim Banks, bagpipes. Selections included "Amazing Grace" and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," presented by Clarissia Broddle, "Moonlight Sonata," presented by Maureen Moore; and "Waltzing Matilda," the Australian national anthem.
Honorary casket bearers were Miles' grandchildren, Jason Miles, Julie Miles and Londa Shackelford; and members of the Open Door Sunday School Class at Burden United Methodist Church, Ava Deets, Ora Parsons, Lilly Smalley, Lois Starkey, Susie Tatum and Ruby Temple.
Casket bearers were Don Alexander, Wes Keely, Bart Moore, Ryan Moore, Steve Otto, Tom Starkey, Bob Tatum and Richard VanSickle.
A memorial has been established with the church.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Eva Hodges
BUHLER - Eva L. Hodges, 79, of Buhler, died Jan. 27, 2000, in Buhler.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Anthony. The Rev. Stan Hughes will officiate. Burial will be in Forest Park Cemetery
in Anthony.
Memorials have been established with the United Methodist Church of Anthony and the music and theater departments of Southwestern College in Winfield.
Hodges was born July 7, 1920, in Hugoton, to C.C. and Florence (Farrar) Morris.
She marred Wendell L. Hodges Aug. 7, 1943, in Enid, Okla. He died June 5, 1989.
A retired teacher, she was a member of the United Methodist Church of Anthony, Harper County Retired Teachers Association and Kansas Music Educators.
Survivors include three sons, David Hodges, Buhler, Jeff Hodges, DeSoto, and Tim Hodges, Portage, Ind.; two daughters, Wendy Estes, Winfield, and Cherlene Graves, Sterling; a brother, Harry Morris, Hugoton; and 14 grandchildren.
Mitch Wisneski
TORRANCE, Calif. - Mitch L. Wisneski, 77, of Torrance, died at his home on Jan. 23, 2000.
Burial will be later in Highland Cemetery
at Winfield.
Wisneski was born March 26, 1922, in Warsaw, Poland. He was a veteran of World War II who was caught up in the turbulent times after the fall of Poland to the German invasion in 1939. He was in the Polish underground, in the Warsaw uprising of 1944 and later in the British army in Europe.
He came to the United States from Canada in 1953.
By profession he was an aerospace engineer working selectively on advanced programs for companies in Wichita, Seattle and southern California. He retired from Northrop Aircraft in 1987.
An amateur historian, he specialized in western civilization and had a strong interest in and feeling for his adopted country.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn (Hurley) Wisneski, Torrance, formerly of Cambridge.
