Doris Franks

GRENOLA - Doris A. Franks, 60, of Grenola, formerly of the Latham and Beaumont area, died Jan. 28, 2000, at Sedan City Hospital.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Carlson Funeral Home in El Dorado. Burial will be in Greenfield Cemetery at Grenola.

Memorial contributions to any charity may be left at the funeral home.

Franks was born Sept. 23, 1939, in Adrian, Mo., to William Edward and Helen Esther (McGill) Gooch. She was employed by Cessna Aircraft for nearly 30 years before her retirement.

Franks had lived in Grenola since the fall of 1999. She lived previously for six years in the Latham area and for over 30 years at Beaumont.

In July 1960 she married Larry Franks in Wichita.

Survivors include her husband, Larry Franks, Grenola; two sons, Jesse Franks, Latham, and Chet Franks, Grenola; a brother, Dale Gooch, and a sister, Naomi Laswell, both of El Dorado; five grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

Eleanor Hoag

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Eleanor P. Hoag, 89, of Fort Collins, formerly of Winfield, died Jan. 22, 2000, in Fort Collins.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Fort Collins. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery at Hinckley, Minn. Bohlender Funeral Chapel of Fort Collins is in charge of arrangements.

Hoag was born Oct. 3, 1910, in Hinckley, Minn., to Ira Benjamin and Ethel Elma (Brown) Hoag. She spent her last years in Fort Collins where she attended college.

She received her Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry at Colorado State University (Colorado A&M) in 1930 and her doctorate in education from the University of Northern Colorado-Greeley in 1946.

Hoag taught in rural schools in Grover and LaJunta, Colo., and later at Southwestern College, Emporia State University and Hampton Institute, Hampton, Va. A Browning scholar, she was a volunteer researcher for 12 years at the Armstrong-Browning Library at Baylor University in Waco, Texas.

She was a member of the Campus Ministry Board and the First United Methodist Church.

While on the faculty at Southwestern, she served as president of the American Association of University Women. During the 1960s she participated in civil rights marches and taught classes in the South. An activist for women's rights, she attended the first conference of the National Organization for Women.

Opal Parson

OXFORD - Opal F. Parson, 86, of Oxford, died Jan. 28, 2000, at Sumner Regional Medical Center in Wellington.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Oxford. The Rev. Curtis Fike will officiate. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery.

Friends may call at Oliver-Hawks Funeral Home until 8 tonight.

A memorial has been established with Oxford Friendship Meals. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Parson was born July 8, 1913, in Warsaw, Mo., to William Anthony and Ida May (Johnson) Leibli. In 1918 the family moved to the Wakita and Manchester area in Oklahoma where she was raised.

On June 30, 1934, she married Harold Claude "Shorty" Parson in Enid, Okla. They moved from Wakita to Oxford in 1952. He died May 2, 1983.

Parson had been a cook at several Oxford restaurants and a nurse's aide at Heritage House in Winfield.

She was a member of the Southern Baptist Church of Oxford.

Survivors include a son, Wesley Parson, Oxford; two daughters, Eunice Cooper, Winfield, and Etta May Craven, Oxford; a sister, Lillian Moyer, Eagle Rock, Mo.; five grandchildren, one great-grandchild and three stepgreat-grandsons.

A son, Lavern Lynn Parson, preceded her in death.

Richard Sproat

ARKANSAS CITY - Richard H. Sproat Sr., 95, of Arkansas City, died Jan. 29, 2000, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Missionary Baptist Church in Arkansas City. The Rev. Richard Coldwell will officiate. Private burial services will be in Parker Cemetery.

Friends may call at Hawks Funeral Home until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorial contributions can be made at the funeral home.

Sproat was born June 12, 1904, in Oklahoma Territory, to Orange Riley and Mary Elizabeth (Smith) Sproat.

He first married Gertrude Metzinger.

In 1945 he married Lucille Blacksmith in St. Joseph, Mo. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Wichita. He farmed in the Derby area and worked for several construction companies. They moved to Arkansas City in 1981. After his wife died in 1985, Sproat returned to Wichita but moved back to Arkansas City in 1997.

He was a member of Missionary Baptist Church and recently had a poem he had written recognized by the Presbyterian Manor Association.

Survivors include five sons, Raymond Sproat, Lawton, Okla., and Richard Sproat Jr., Marvin Sproat, Johnny Sproat and Charles Sproat, all of the St. Joseph, Mo., area; three daughters, Collene VanDyke, Arkansas City, Patricia Tigner, Seattle, and Dorothy Young, Florida; two sisters, Pearl Trimmell and Mildred Murphy, both of Wichita; 29 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Bert Williams

BLACKWELL - Bert O. Williams, 97, formerly of Winfield, died Jan. 30, 2000, in Blackwell.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Highland Cemetery at Winfield.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home.

A memorial has been established with the Church of God in Blackwell. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Williams was born Oct. 31, 1902, in rural Leady, Okla., to William H. and Belinda Verna (Close) Williams. He was raised and educated at El Reno, Okla.

On Dec. 18, 1949, he married Wilma A. Sherrill in Tonkawa, Okla. She died July 5, 1995.

Williams worked at the APCO Refinery in Arkansas City before retiring in 1967. He was also a gospel minister with the Baptist Church for many years, serving in Perry, Okla., and Bazine.

He moved to Winfield in 1991 and lived at Good Samaritan Village. In 1995 he moved to Blackwell.

Survivors include two sons, George C. Williams, Tulsa, and Ron A. Williams, California; a daughter, Naomi J. Humble, Blackwell; 12 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Bert Williams

BLACKWELL - Bert O. Williams, 97, formerly of Winfield, died Jan. 30, 2000, in Blackwell.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Highland Cemetery at Winfield.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home.

A memorial has been established with the Church of God in Blackwell. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Patsy Barnett

HOLLISTER, Mo. - Patsy R. Barnett, 70, of Hollister, formerly of Winfield, died Jan. 28, 2000, at Skaggs Community Health Center in Branson, Mo., after a long illness.

Services were at 1 p.m. Feb. 3 at Snapp's Ozarks Memorial Park Funeral Home, Branson. The Rev. Melvin Hatten officiated. Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday in Highland Cemetery at Winfield. The Rev. Steve Souther will officiate. Ruth Ann Wengeler will receive friends and family following the services.

Contributions to the Patsy Barnett Memorial will help with funeral expenses. They can be sent to Snapp's Funeral Home, 1638 E. Highway 76, Branson, MO 65616.

Barnett was born Feb. 9, 1929, in Ponca City, to Ferd and Mae (Gill) Wells. She attended Winfield schools and was a retired restaurant worker.

Survivors include a son, Johnny Mize, and a granddaughter, both of Muskogee, Okla.; and several cousins in the Winfield area, including Ruth Ann Wengeler, Betty Miller and Robert Reed.

Irene Kelly

CEDAR VALE - Irene L. Kelly, 81, of Cedar Vale, died Feb. 1, 2000, in Wichita.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Cedar Vale. Burial will be in Round Mound Cemetery. Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials have been established with the Cedar Vale First Baptist Church, Wauneta United Methodist Church, Sedan First Baptist Church and Grenola Christian Church.

Kelly was born Nov. 12, 1918, near Harmon, Okla., to Dona and Albert Coram. Following her graduation from Vici (Okla.) High School, she married Earl Kelly of Harmon in 1936. They moved to the Cedar Vale community in 1938 to begin a ranching business.

Kelly was active in the Kansas Extension Homemakers Council and the Kansas Council of Women, serving as president of both and as a delegate to a number of international conventions. Her travel took her to countries on five continents as an official delegate to meetings of the Associated County Women of the World. In 1978 she received the Kansas Mother of the Year award from the American Mothers Committee.

Survivors include her husband, Earl Kelly, Cedar Vale; three sons, Carl Kelly, Peck, Myrl Kelly, Wichita, and Lynn Kelly, Grenola; a daughter, Patsy Johnson, Storrs, Conn.; a sister, Fern Billings, Vici, Okla.; 18 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A son, Gerry Kelly, preceded her in death.
