Ora McKenna

JUNCTION CITY - Ora Jane McKenna, 73, of Winfield, died Feb. 2, 2000, from cancer.

There will be a private memorial service. Hillside Funeral Home East is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Inc. of Wichita.

Survivors include her husband, Edward McKenna, Junction City, formerly of Winfield; two daughters, Janet McKenna, Springfield, Mo., and Chris Cimino, Junction City; and three grandchildren.

A son, David Lee McKenna, preceded her in death.

Bob and Milly Meyer

TWIN FALLS, Idaho - Bob and Milly Meyer, 67, of Twin Falls, formerly of Winfield, died Jan. 30, 2000, in Idaho from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Twin Falls Reformed Church. Hansen Mortuary, Burley Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Contributions can be made to the Bob and Milly Memorial Fund, c/o Rob Meyer, 484 W. 45th North, Burley, ID 83318. Recipients will include the Magic Valley Christian High School Scholarship Fund and overseas mission work.

Bob was born Feb. 7, 1932, in Owensville, Mo., to Emil and Ruby Meyer. Milly was born Dec. 10, 1932, in St. Louis, to Rudolph and Auanda Meyer. Bob and Milly married Aug. 11, 1953, in St. Louis.

Bob graduated from Concordia Teachers College in River Forest, Ill., in 1953. He taught in Lutheran elementary schools in Chester, Ill., Houston, Texas, and Chattanooga, Tenn., and at Mayer (Minn.) Lutheran High School before accepting an appointment as an instructor of music and education at St. John's College in 1980. After he left St. John's, he began training in nursing home management and served as manager of nursing homes in Minneapolis and St. Louis.

Bob received a master's degree from Mankato State University in Minnesota and did other graduate work.

Milly attended Concordia College and was an elementary and high school teacher for over 40 years. She taught art for the Winfield Art Center, now the Winfield Arts & Humanities Council, for a number of years. She also directed arts and crafts programs at the nursing homes where her husband was an administrator. At the time of her death, she was the art instructor at Magic Valley Christian High School.

Bob was a church organist for many years, while Milly was involved in many projects at the Twin Falls Reformed Church.

Survivors include two sons, Rob Meyer, Burley, Idaho, and Martin Meyer, Los Angeles; two daughters, Julie Hammer, Lawrence, and Carrie Berndt, Twin Falls; Bob's mother, Ruby Meyer, St. Louis; Bob's sister, Betty Kellis, Hazelwood, Mo.; Milly's brother, Ken Meyer, Upper Montclair, N.J.; and 10 grandchildren.

Grace Kunkle

UDALL - Grace Kunkle, 86, of Udall, died Feb. 2, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

There will be no service. Cremation has been effected. Smith Mortuary of Derby was in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with the Udall First Responders. Contributions can be sent to the Udall City Building or Bank of Commerce, Udall, KS 67146.

Kunkle was born Sept. 8, 1913, in Winfield, to Fred and Laura (Garrick) King.

On May 30, 1935, she married Robert Kunkle in Rockaway Beach, Mo. He died July 31, 1984.

A homemaker, Kunkle was a longtime resident of Rock. She had lived in Udall since 1974.

Survivors include three sons, Gary Kunkle, Udall, Mike Kunkle, Carmel Valley, Calif., and Robin Kunkle, San Antonio, Texas; a daughter, Susanne Pashin, Udall; a brother, Garrick King, Arkansas City; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Laura Lee Kunkle, preceded her in death.

Josephine Bennington

D. Josephine Bennington, 68, of Winfield, formerly of Arkansas City, died Feb. 3, 2000, at Walnut Hill Nursing Center.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Parker Cemetery in Arkansas City. The Rev. Guy E. Rendoff will officiate.

A memorial has been established with the First United Methodist Church of Arkansas City. Contributions may be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home in Arkansas City.

Bennington was born Aug. 18, 1931, to Benjamin and Cassie (Hays) Rogers. She graduated from El Dorado High School in 1949.

On Oct. 1, 1953, she married Clifton L. Bennington in El Dorado where they made their home. In 1983 she moved to Winfield and in 1988 to Arkansas City.

A homemaker, she was also a member of the First United Methodist Church of Arkansas City and a past member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion ladies' auxiliaries.

Her husband, Clifton Bennington, and a son, Clifford Bennington, preceded her in death.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Gandolph and Karla Sultz, both of Arkansas City; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Betty Estes

SOUTH HAVEN - Services for Betty Estes, 64, who died Feb. 1, 2000, were held at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 4 in Rose Hill Cemetery at South Haven. The Rev. Jerry Crenshaw officiated.

Gary Appleton recited a poem, "For Mimi," written by Jacob Muller. Julie Appleton gave the remembrance, "Things My Mama Taught Me."

Special music recorded by Julie Estes-Appleton included Garth Brooks' "The Dance"; "Amazing Grace," performed by Nicholas Muller; Neil Diamond's "I Am, I Said," and the "Adagio" from a Mozart clarinet concerto.

Casket bearers were Rickey Muller, Nicholas Muller, Jacob Muller, Troy Rebold, LeeRoy Nally, Bobby Nally and Gary Appleton.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Serenity Lyons

OXFORD - Serenity Rose Lyons, infant daughter of Karen Marie Lyons of Oxford, was born and died Feb. 2, 2000, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Services were at 1 p.m. Feb. 6 in Oxford Cemetery. Bishop Robert Atkinson officiated. Oliver-Hawks Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Survivors in addition to her mother are a brother, Dustin Miller, Mulvane; and her grandmother, Marilyn Lyons, Jackson, Wyo.

Alice Cooper

HUTCHINSON - Alice I. Cooper, 90, formerly of Winfield, died Feb. 6, 2000, in the Hutchinson hospital.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. The Rev. Jerre Nolte will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with Grace United Methodist Church and Southwestern College.

Cooper was born April 14, 1900, in Buffalo, to Omer and Ollie (Fulmer) Cook. She was educated in the Buffalo area.

On April 17, 1933, she married H. Don Cooper. They moved to Winfield in 1947. Her husband died May 23, 1982.

Cooper was a homemaker and active in Grace United Methodist Church. She also was a member of the Winfield Country Club, bridge clubs and other social clubs.

Survivors include a sister, Opal Jones, Inman; and nieces and nephews, including Kenneth Jones, Hutchinson.

Betty Duncan

Betty Denise Duncan, 52, of Winfield, died Feb. 5, 2000, at her residence.

Services were scheduled for 2 p.m. today at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home in Arkansas City. The Rev. Steve Chambers officiated. Burial was in Riverview Cemetery in Arkansas City.

Duncan was born Aug. 26, 1947, to Edward and Betty (Lawton) Duncan of Waynoka, Okla. She was a past member of the Central Christian Church.

Survivors include two brothers, F. Dee Duncan, Allendale, N.J., and E. Lee Duncan, Gardnerville, Nev.

Wayne McNown

DOUGLASS - J. Wayne McNown, 86, a retired Beech Aircraft machinist, died Feb. 7, 2000, in Winfield.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Douglass First Christian Church. Burial will be in Douglass Cemetery. Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with the Douglass First Christian Church.

McNown was born Dec. 30, 1913, in Leeds, to Jay B. and Myrtle (Lee) McNown. He attended school in Sedan and later attended Pittsburg State University to obtain his teaching degree.

On Nov. 5, 1938, he married Grace McMillan in Sedan.

An employee of Beech Aircraft for 38 years, McNown was a member of the Douglass First Christian Church, Douglass Masonic Lodge and Wichita Consistory.

Survivors include his wife, Grace McNown, Douglass; a son, Jerry McNown, Wichita; six daughters, Virginia Smith, Golden, Colo., Joyce Kent and Patsy Dorsett, both of Wichita, Martha Cathey and Jill Dankert, both of Douglass, and Janet Giesen, Harper; a brother, Don McNown, Towanda; four sisters, Lorene Runyan, Sedan, Alta Fern Ehrlich, Delaware, Okla., Louise Seward, Elwood, Neb., and Peggy Ward, Wichita; 13 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and six stepgreat-grandchildren.

Margine Dubois

UDALL - Margine Dubois, 66, of rural Udall, died Feb. 7, 2000, at William Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Burial will be in Ninnescah Cemetery at Udall.

Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday.

A memorial has been established with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Dubois was born Dec. 23, 1933, at El Reno, Okla., to Paul and Dollie (Williams) Clovis. She attended El Reno and Okarche, Okla., schools.

On Sept. 21, 1951, she married Carl C. Dubois in San Luis Obispo, Calif. They lived and worked in California, Oklahoma and Kansas during their marriage.

Her husband died Feb. 12, 1995.

Survivors include four sons, Dwayne Dubois, Ronald Dean Dubois, Robert Eugene Dubois and Larry Ray Dubois, all of Udall; two brothers, Paul "Junior" Clovis, Oklahoma City, and Charles Clovis, El Reno, Okla.; and a sister, Peggy Matthews, Oklahoma City.
