Fern Farris

HOISINGTON - Fern M. Farris, 77, of Hoisington, died Feb. 24, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Feb. 28, 2000, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. The Rev. Carl Willis officiated. Burial was in Hoisington Cemetery.

Memorials to the American Heart Association are suggested. They may be sent in care of the funeral home.

Farris was born Aug. 26, 1922, in Texas County, Mo., to Leota Catherine (Scott) and Newton Henry Barton.

On March 15, 1937, she married Walter Farris in Texas County, Mo. He died Sept. 19, 1967.

On June 2, 1963, she married Edgar A. Farris at Yates Center. He died Aug. 7, 1988.

She had lived in Hoisington for 27 years after moving there from El Dorado.

A homemaker, she was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Hoisington.

Survivors include seven daughters, Debbie Pierce, Winfield, June Erwin, Emporia, Melba Baker and Sherrie Eichman, both of El Dorado, Linda Currie, Pueblo West, Colo., Sheila Phillips, Hoisington, and Kim Schneider, Great Bend; a son, Jack D. Farris, Leon; a sister, Neva McColgin, Licking, Mo.; 26 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Maxine Hoyt

DEXTER - Bertha Maxine Hoyt, 83, of Dexter, died Feb. 25, 2000, at her home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Dexter Cemetery. Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service until 9 p.m. today.

A memorial has been established with the Winfield Area Emergency Medical Service First Response Fund. Contributions may be made at the funeral home.

Born Jan. 15, 1917, at Cambridge, Hoyt was a daughter of Harland Eugene and Mary Grace (Simons) Waldroupe. She attended Cambridge schools.

On Nov. 1, 1934, she married Thomas R. Love in Cowley County. He died in 1966.

On Sept. 13, 1967, she married Arthur G. Hoyt Jr. at Miami, Okla. They lived in Dexter.

Hoyt had been employed by the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center for a short time.

Survivors include her husband, Arthur G. "Junior" Hoyt, and a son, George Love, both of Dexter; five daughters, Arlene Seeliger, Burden, Diana Blevins, Waukesha, Wis., Wilma Hoyt Stuckey, Wichita, Arthureta Hoyt Courtney, Ponca City, and Esther Hoyt Mayer, Chesapeake, Va.; a brother, Maurice Waldroupe, Winfield; two sisters, Margaret Scott, Winfield, and Melba Huss, Bidwell, Ohio; 22 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

A son, Arnold R. Love, died in 1991.

Charles Monroe

ARKANSAS CITY - Charles Wesley Monroe Sr., 73, of Arkansas City, died Feb. 26, 2000, at the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church. The Revs. Sherman Beasterfeld and Wade C. Graber will officiate. Burial will be in Parker Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

Monroe was born Feb. 3, 1927, in Oakhurst, Okla., to Virginia (Gaffney) and John Thomas Monroe. He was raised and educated in Oakhurst, rural Skiatook and Sperry, all in Oklahoma, and graduated from Sperry High School in 1943.

From Aug. 21, 1946, until enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1951, Monroe served in the National Guard. He served in Korea and was discharged in 1954.

On Oct. 9, 1966, Monroe married Norma Jean Morhain in Arkansas City. He worked as an inspector for General Electric at Strother Field for 13 years.

He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church, the Arkansas City Kiwanis Club and the Spencer Ralston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1254. He had served on the funeral detail for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Norma Monroe, and two sons Charles Monroe Jr. and Thomas Monroe, all of Arkansas City; a brother, Danny Lee Monroe, of Catoosa, Okla; and two grandchildren.

Wesley Moore

John Wesley Moore, 52, of 101 Minnesota, Winfield, died Feb. 25, 2000, at his home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial with military rites will be in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 p.m. today.

Memorials have been established with American Syringomyelia Alliance Project Inc. and Victory in the Valley in Wichita. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Born Sept. 2, 1947, in Winfield, Moore was a son of Charles Duward and Dorothy May Moore. He attended Burden schools and graduated from Central High School in 1965.

Moore worked for the Wakefield Ranch and was employed by Bair Oil Co. of Burden. He served with the U.S. Army in Vietnam as an infantryman.

On Aug. 24, 1969, he married Sharon Lea Spencer in Winfield. They lived in Burden before moving to Winfield in 1971.

Moore was employed by the City of Winfield, Morton Buildings at Strother Field and the Cowley County Highway Department. He then resumed working for the City of Winfield, first at the water treatment facility and then the park department beginning in 1977. He retired as superintendent of the park department in 1997 due to failing health.

Moore was a member of the Burden Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon Moore, and two sons, Wesley Scott Moore and Travis John Moore, all of Winfield; a daughter, Misty Lea Hendrix, Park City; a brother, Charles Dwayne Moore, Winfield; and two grandchildren;

Letha Rising

Letha Archer Rising, 93, longtime Winfield resident, died Feb. 24, 2000, at Winfield Rest Haven.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 28, 2000, at the Evangelical Free Church. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with the Evangelical Free Church Building Fund and Hospice Inc. Contributions may be made through Miles Funeral Service.

Rising was born March 27, 1906, in Winfield, to Amanda (Taylor) and Nathaniel Mood Archer. When she was a child, the family moved to Ohio for a short time before returning to Winfield where she attended Winfield High School.

On June 20, 1926, she married Lewis E. Rising. She worked as a nurse's aide for several years at William Newton Memorial Hospital and Good Samaritan Village.

She grew up in the Tisdale community and was a past member of the Tisdale United Methodist Church where she accepted Christ at a revival. She was baptized at Grouse Creek in Dexter. She was a member of the Evangelical Free Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Lillian M. Rising Grunwald, two brothers, Dale Archer and Mace Archer, and two sisters, Nadine Peck and Ruth Sparks, all of Winfield; a granddaughter, a great-granddaughter and a great-grandson expected in June.

Dean Sailsbury

HAVEN - E. Dean Sailsbury, 73, of Haven, died Feb. 25, 2000, at Hutchinson Hospital.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Haven United Methodist Church. The Rev. Richard Brooks will officiate. Military honors and burial will be at Laurel Cemetery.

Friends may call until 9 tonight at Van Campen Funeral Home.

Memorials may be sent to the Haven Emergency Medical Technicians, the United Methodist Church or the Haven Public Library in care of the funeral home.

Sailsbury was born in Labette County, July 20, 1926, to Katie (Haynes) and Dewey Sailsbury.

During World War II, he served in the United States Navy.

On Aug. 3, 1950, he married Bliss Ann Baker at Parsons.

He had lived five years in Winfield and nine years in Salina and in Haven since 1969. He was owner/operator of Haven Redi-Mix since 1969.

Sailsbury served as mayor of Haven from 1983 to 1987 and served on the city council from 1976 to 1981. He was a past president of Kansas Redi-Mix Association and on the board of directors at the Yoder State Bank. He was a member of The Haven Golf Association.

Survivors include his wife, Bliss Sailsbury, a son, Craig Sailsbury, and a daughter, Sandra Williams, all of Haven; two brothers, Dewey Sailsbury and Everett Sailsbury, both of Hollister, Mo.; a sister, Patricia Morin, Iola; and six grandchildren.

Pete Bozman

DOUGLASS - Peter A. "Pete" Bozman, 57, of Douglass, died Feb. 24, 2000, at William Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield.

Services were at 11 a.m. Feb. 28 in Douglass Cemetery under the direction of Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home.

Bozman was born Feb. 5, 1941, in Los Angeles, to Virgil and Juanita (Stoddard) Bozman.

On Nov. 2, 1970, he married Louise Williams in Nowata, Okla.

Bozman was a former partner of Horns Unlimited in Marionville, Mo., for many years before moving to Douglass.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of Derby and the Moose Lodge of Douglass.

Survivors include his wife, Louise Bozman, Douglass; five sons, Troy, Steven, Marty and Michael Bozman, all of Springfield, Mo., and Bryce Bozman, Douglass; three brothers, Junior Stoddard, Lake Charles, La., Melvin Bozman, Springfield, Mo., and David Bozman, Monet, Mo.; two sisters, Priscilla Bozman, Los Angeles, and Carol Ann Carlson, Beeville, Texas; three half-brothers, Jerry, Curtis and Eugene Stoddard, and four half-sisters, Mabel Anne, Linda, Brenda and Debbie (last names not listed), all of Lake Charles, La.; and 34 grandchildren.
