Margaret Ayres
Margaret E. Ayres, 83, of 412 W. 14th, Winfield, died April 2, 2000, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Mizpah Cemetery
in Wakefield.
Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
Ayres was born Oct. 11, 1916, in Joplin, Mo., to Margaret (Bragg) and Alonzo Crum. When she was a child, the family moved to Arkansas City where she was educated.
She married William Crawford Roberts in Arkansas City. They made their home in Arkansas City until they divorced.
She later moved to Enid, Okla., where she met and married Maurice Ayres in 1942. He died in 1990.
A homemaker, she was a member of the Mulvane Church of the Nazarene.
Survivors include two sons, Wayne Roberts, Oxford, and Kenneth Ayres, Mulvane; a sister, Velma Black, Winfield; a grandson and a granddaughter.
Edythe Benson
Services for Edythe Caroline Ovedia Benson were held at 10 a.m. April 3 at the First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Steve Souther officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.
Irma Scholfield was the organist. Special music included "Morning Has Broken" and "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God."
A memorial has been established with the First Presbyterian Church.
Miles Funeral Service had charge of arrangements.
Don Doughty
LARAMIE, Wyo. - Don Doughty, 67, of Laramie, Wyo., formerly of Winfield, died March 31, 2000, while visiting in Houston, Texas.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Matthew's Cathedral in Laramie. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Mount Hope Cemetery
in Lander, Wyo.
A memorial has been established with St. Matthew's Cathedral, 104 S. Fourth, Laramie, WY 82070.
Doughty was born Jan. 17, 1933, in Eureka, to Eula Bernadine (Young) and Don Doughty. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1951 and from Southwestern College in 1955.
His wife, Marilyn, died in 1977.
He was retired from teaching and the insurance business.
Survivors include a daughter, Kim Elaine Henry, Houston; a son, Don Mason Doughty, Jamestown, N.Y.; a sister, Peggy Day, Wichita; and two granddaughters.
Delphia Smith
OXFORD - Delphia Combs Smith, 87, of Oxford, died April 2, 2000, at Riverview Manor in Oxford.
Services will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church. The Rev. Curtis Fike will officiate. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Oliver-Hawks Funeral Home until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday.
A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Smith was born April 24, 1912, in Westville, Okla., to Sallie (Gibson) and Andrew Jackson Thurman. The family moved to Mehan, Okla., in 1926.
She married Charles William Combs on May 7, 1929, in Stillwater, Okla. They moved to Oxford in 1939. He died Aug. 26, 1972.
On Sept. 15, 1978, she married Ira Smith in Lincoln, Neb. They lived in Oxford. He died March 31, 1983.
She had done domestic work in Oxford homes for many years.
She was a member of the Oxford First Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Harley W. "Jack" Combs, Moberly, Mo., a daughter, Dollie Henderson, Mulvane; 15 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
Two stepsons, Edward Combs, and a stepdaughter, Edna Brandenbur, preceded her in death.
Robert Jones
MOLINE - Robert Earl Jones, 65, of Moline, died April 3, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard. The Rev. Harold Tucker will officiate. Burial will be in Moline Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with the First Baptist Church and Ferguson-Spease American Legion Post 388, both of Moline. Contributions may be made at the funeral home.
Jones was born July 23, 1934, in Moline, to M. Evelyn (Moore) and Earl Raymond Jones. He lived with his family on a farm near Moline and graduated from Moline High School in 1952.
On Oct. 27, 1952, he married Betty Jean Ledbetter in Bentonville, Ark. In April 1954 he joined the United States Navy whee he served four years of active duty as an air traffic controller first class at the U.S. Navy base in San Diego, Calif. He later served four years in the reserves.
After his discharge in 1958, the family returned to Moline where he was employed by the Santa Fe Railroad as a brakeman and conductor for 13 years. During this time and for the remainder of his life, he was a stockman. He also bought and sold real estate and was an insurance salesman for several years.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Moline and American Legion Post 10 of Winfield.
A stillborn daughter preceded him in death in 1953.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Jones, Moline; a daughter, Sharon Kuepker, Colwich; a sister, Vicki Stewart, Moline; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Delphia Smith

Sophia Meyer
ARKANSAS CITY - Sophia Marie Eisenhauer Meyer, 93, of Arkansas City, died April 5, 2000, at Medicalodge East in Arkansas City.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Redeemer Lutheran Church. Pastor Mark Boxman will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
Friends may call at Hawks Funeral Home until 8 tonight and Friday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. The casket will be closed at the church.
Memorials have been established with the Redeemer Lutheran Church building fund and Friendship Meals. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Meyer was born July 28, 1906, in Burr, Neb., in Otoe County, to Anna (Rauckman) and George Eisenhauer. When she was four, the family moved to Carlton and in 1916, to Newkirk, Okla.
On Jan. 11, 1927, she married John Jensen Meyer at St. John Lutheran Church in Newkirk. They farmed in the Kay County area until moving to Newkirk in 1940 and then to Arkansas City in 1942.
A homemaker, she was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Guild, and, for 58 years, the Friendly Neighbor Club.
Survivors include a son, Donald Meyer, Winfield; two daughters, Mildred Rickords, Arkansas City, and Wilma Hynd, Newkirk; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, three stepgreat-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Peggy Moore
ROSE HILL - Peggy Ann Moore, 61, of Rose Hill, died April 3, 2000.
Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Rose Hill Baptist Church.
Memorials have been established with the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association.
Smith Mortuary, Derby, has charge of arrangements.
She was a manager at Health Care Billing Consultants Inc.
Survivors include her husband, Kenith Moore, Rose Hill: three sons, Garland Moore, Douglass, Mitchell Moore, Shreveport, La., and Kenneth Moore, Andover; her mother, Elsie Robbins, Sapulpa, Okla.; a sister, Sharon Morris, Tulsa; three brothers, Frank Graham, Springdale, Ark., and Terry Graham and Walter Graham, both of Wichita; her stepmother, Thelma Graham, Wichita; and six grandchildren.
