Rosemary Thurber

Services for Rosemary Thurber were held at 10 a.m. April 4 in the Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. K.B. Murray officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Vocal music included "The Old Rugged Cross," "In the Garden" and "Angels Among Us."

Honorary casket bearer was Jim Groom.

Casket bearers were John Groom, Bob Jackson, Bob Johndrow, Keith Kocher and Justin Thurber.

Memorials have been established with the American Diabetes Association and the American Arthritis Foundation.

Patrick Yorks

RALEIGH, N.C. - Patrick Michael Yorks, 28, of Raleigh, N.C., formerly of Peabody, died April 1, 2000, at the Wake Medical Center in Raleigh as a result of a tree-trimming accident.

Local services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Wheeler Funeral Home Chapel in Cedar Vale. The Rev. Roger Megli will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Vale Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday.

A memorial has been established with the Centura Bank in the name of Patrick Yorks and can be sent in care of the funeral home.

Yorks was born Dec. 22, 1971, in Lancaster, Ohio, to Michael Yorks and Nancy (Olson) Freel. He graduated from Peabody High School in 1990.

After graduation he served in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Bragg, Ky. Upon discharge he moved to Raleigh and was working as a tree trimmer.

He was engaged to marry Sonja Stafford of Raleigh in June.

Survivors include his mother, Nancy Freel, Cedar Vale; his father, Michael Yorks, Des Moines, Iowa; his fiancee, Sonja Stafford, Raleigh; three sisters, Maria Tiger and Cindy Omstead, both of Wichita, and Christina Yorks, Kent, Wash.; and his grandparents, Floyd and Katherine Olson, Minneapolis, Minn.

Maxine Schuyler

Services for Maxine M. Schuyler were held at 1:30 p.m. March 28 at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home. The Rev. Shawn Sturm officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Keith Anglemyer was the organist. Wilma Anglemyer sang "I'll Fly Away" and "Jesus Loves Me."

Honorary casket bearers were Joe Anglemyer, Harroll Davis and George Buckman.

Casket bearers were David Sodowsky, Terry Martindale, Gary Rhodes, Mark Richardson, Ronnie Gray and Bob Hurst.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association, 347 S. Laura, Wichita, KS 67211-1518.

Evelyn Simpson

ARKANSAS CITY - Evelyn L. Simpson, 79, of Arkansas City, died April 6, 2000, at the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Lawn Cemetery near Arkansas City. Jesse Kindred will officiate.

The family will receive friends at Hawks Funeral Home tonight from 6 to 8. The casket will also be open Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Simpson was born Aug. 9, 1920, near Dillworth, Okla., in Kay County, to May (Thursa) and Roger C. Werther. She was raised in Sumner County and graduated from Geuda Springs High School in 1939.

In 1940 she married William O. Rich in Neosho, Mo. She lived in Missouri until moving to Arkansas City in 1944.

On Oct. 20, 1948, she married Gerald L. Simpson in Enid, Okla. They lived in Arkansas City. He died on June 14, 1988.

She had worked in Arkansas City at several pharmacies - Crutherard's, Kerr's, Albert's and Taylor's - until retiring in the mid-1980s. She had also made quilts for several years out of her home.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry Rich, Arkansas City, and Garry Rich, New York City; a daughter, Judy Walker, Houston; two brothers, Robert Werther, Borger, Texas, and Earl Werther, Gallop, N.M.; four sisters, Winifred Kinslow and Dorothy Stockton, both of Arkansas City, Ruby Keeter, Phoenix, Ariz., and Mary Ellen Valenzula, California; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one stepgreat-grandchild.

John Shafer

John L. Shafer, 77, formerly of 1502 Fuller, Winfield, died April 7, 2000, at Grouse Valley Manor in Dexter.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church in Winfield. Masonic and military burial rites will be at Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Home from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8.

Memorials have been established with Grouse Valley Manor and the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Shafer was born July 23, 1922, in Dexter, to Minnie (Rush) and Robert F. "Mike" Shafer. He was educated in Dexter schools and graduated from Dexter High School in 1940.

During World War II he served in the Army infantry at Fort Benning, Ga., from 1943 to 1944.

On Dec. 31, 1948, he married Beulah Lee Dungey in Winfield at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.A. Dungey. The Shafers made their home in Winfield. Mr. Shafer worked at Boeing until 1963 when he began working as a rural mail carrier in Rock. He retired in 1968 due to a disability. He had been a resident of Grouse Valley Manor since 1987.

A member of the First United Methodist Church in Winfield, he was also a member and past commander of Winfield American Legion Post 10 where he served on many committees, past master and 50-year member of the Dexter Masonic Lodge 156 and a past member of the Rural Letter Carriers Association.

He was a coach and manager of the American Legion Junior and Babe Ruth baseball leagues, past editor of the American Legion "Bombshell" newsletter, an organizer and planner of the Veterans Day parade for many years and in charge of the centennial parade in 1961.

Survivors include his wife, Beulah Shafer, Winfield; two daughters, Jan Carson and Margaret Wells, both of Emporia; two sons, Donald Shafer, Emporia, and John D. Shafer, Moline; a sister, Melva Ruth Hobbs, Arkansas City; two brothers, Cecil Shafer, Topeka, and Jack Shafer, Arkansas City; six grandchildren and a great-grandson.

Judy Johnson

A celebration of the life of Judy Johnson was held at 10:30 a.m. April 1 at Grace United Methodist Church. The Revs. Jerre W. Nolte and Ticia Bennett, Louise Schuppener and Daniel Miller were the celebrants. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Music included "As Dew from Heaven Distilled," "Hymn of Promise," "Children of the Heavenly Father" and "Eternal Mind, The Potter Is." A tape of "Amazing Grace," performed by Spirit, a New Orleans jazz group to which Judy belonged, was played as was a tape of "The Lord's Prayer," with Judy playing the piano and her husband, Frank Johnson, playing the saxophone.

Miller gave the Swedish affirmation of faith from Philippians 4.

Honorary casket bearers was Phil Johnson.

Casket bearers were Glen Ricke, Bob Sippel, Arliss Burns, Duane Johnson, Robert Johnson, Bob Lewis and Larry Merideth.

Memorials have been established with Grace United Methodist Church, the Winfield Municipal Band and the Southwestern College Music Department.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Christine Mefford

ARKANSAS CITY - Christine Mefford, 89, of Arkansas City, died April 6, 2000, at Presbyterian Manor Health Care Center in Arkansas City.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Blessing Heights Church of God-Apostolic Faith in Arkansas City. Burial will be in Newkirk Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in her name. Contributions may be made through Hawks Funeral Home.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 Sunday. The casket will also be open from 9 a.m. to noon Monday at the funeral home.

Mefford was born April 21, 1910, in Parise, N.M., to Frances (Stewart) and Cecil Leonard. The family moved to Amarillo, Texas, when she was four years old and later moved to Leslie, Ark. After graduating from high school, she did some substitute teaching. Later the family moved to Center, Okla. After her father's death, she moved with her mother and brother to Perry, Okla., where she married John Francis "Frank" Mefford on Oct. 14, 1931.

They moved to Ponca City where they farmed until moving to a farm in Newkirk in the fall of 1933. The Meffords moved to Arkansas City in 1941. Mrs. Mefford worked in the wiener department of Mauer-Neurer Rodeo Meats until retiring in 1975. Mr. Mefford died June 18, 1994.

She was a founding member of the Blessing Heights Church in Arkansas City.

Survivors include two sons, Harvey C. Mefford, Arkansas City, and Dale Mefford, Sand Springs, Okla.; five daughters, Donna Richey, Webb City, Okla., Yvonne Foster, Continental Divide, N.M., Gail Gammill, North Canton, Ohio, Mary Lou Deans, Rocky Mount, N.C., and Cheryl Ghram, Arkansas City; 19 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Cleo Rush

CEDAR VALE - Cleo Rush, 94, of Cedar Vale, died April 7, 2000, at William Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Cedar Vale. Burial will be in Cedar Vale Cemetery.

Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday at Wheeler Funeral Home of Cedar Vale.

Memorials have been established with the Baptist Church and the Gideons and can be sent in care of the funeral home.

Rush was born on Sept. 23, 1905, in Leeds, to Edna (Ross) and Edward Huffman. She graduated from Cedar Vale High School and continued her education at Stillwater A&M in Oklahoma and then at Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburg where she achieved her bachelor's degree in 1963. She did some graduate work in library science in Pittsburg and at Emporia State Teachers College.

On May 23, 1931, she married William Franklin Rush in Cedar Vale. He died July 11, 1974.

She taught in small schools in Oklahoma and Kansas. In 1946 the family moved to Coffeyville where she was librarian in Field Kindley High School from 1946 to 1971. After retirement, the Rushes returned to Cedar Vale where she was instrumental in organizing the Cedar Vale Memorial Library.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Dan Rush,and two sisters, Pauline Scott and Lois Fogle, all of Cedar Vale; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
