Fritz Cass

HOWARD - Francis "Fritz" Cass, 89, longtime resident of rural Severy, died May 1, 2000, at Howard Twilight Manor.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Zimmerman Funeral Home. The Rev. Alan Hunter will officiate. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Cass was born Nov. 8, 1910, on a farm northeast of Howard, to Emma (Fear) and Bernie Cecil Cass. He attended Pleasant Hill rural school and grew up in the Elk County area.

On April 4, 1934, he married Leota Clair Barnaby in Independence.

Cass farmed and raised livestock for many years.

In 1940 he was baptized in a creek west of Howard and he remained a Christian throughout his life. He played the fiddle with several bands and was a former member of the Grange and a longtime member of the co-op.

Survivors include his wife, Leota "Lee" Cass, Severy; a son, James T. Cass, Fall River; a sister, Marjorie Marrs, Claremore, Okla.; a grandson, four stepgrandchildren, 10 stepgreat-grandchildren and three stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

A son, Francis Lee Cass, preceded him in death.

Mary Elrod

WICHITA - Mary Jeannine Elrod, 63, formerly of Florence, died May 1, 2000, at Sand Piper Bay health care center in Wichita.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Highland Cemetery in Winfield. The Rev. Deede Evans will officiate.

Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc.

Elrod was born Aug. 27, 1936, in Cowley County. Raised by her mother and stepfather, Elvera and John Davis, she graduated from Winfield High School in 1954.

She had worked as a food service supervisor for Christ Villa, Kansas Masonic Home and Sedgwick Plaza, all in Wichita, until ill health caused her to retire. She moved to Florence but recently returned to Wichita.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Sally Baldwin, Arroyo Grande, Calif.; and a friend, Jo Eva Blair, Wichita.

Ross Whitney

Ross LeClere Whitney, 90, of Winfield, died April 30, 2000, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

A memorial service will be held later and will be announced by Miles Funeral Service.

A memorial has been established with the First Presbyterian Church Renovation Fund. Contributions may be made at the funeral home or church.

Whitney was born Aug. 29, 1909, in Degrey, S.D., to Minnie Leora (LeClere) and Mark Hackett Whitney. He graduated from high school in Pierre, S.D.

On April 15, 1931, he married Selma Robinson in Washington, D.C., where they made their home.

Whitney worked for the U.S. State Department. He was in charge of personnel management in the foreign services and retired after 32 years.

After retirement he drove a school bus. At age 75 he was a bank wirer. He also volunteered his time at the Red Cross, driving a van to transport the elderly to doctor appointments.

His wife died in 1996. Following her death, he moved to Winfield.

Survivors include two sons, Larry Whitney, Winfield, and Chuck Whitney, Tampa, Fla.; two sisters, Garnett Cass and Gloria Allender; four granddaughters and three great-grandchildren.

William Peters

AMARILLO, Texas - William "Bill" Rice Peters, 60, of Amarillo, died April 29, 2000.

Services were held at 4 p.m. May 2 at Arden Road Baptist Church with Pastor Dale Bigham officiating. Burial was in Llano Cemetery. Schooler Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society, District Office, 3915 Bell Avenue, Amarillo, TX 79109.

Peters was born Oct. 6, 1939, in Detroit. He served in the United States Navy. In 1963 he married Patricia Ann Harmon in Winfield.

Peters lived in Albuquerque, N.M., for 13 years before moving to Amarillo in 1974. He worked as an engineer for Sandia National Laboratories at Pantex.

Survivors include his wife, Pat Peters, and two sons, Matthew R. Peters and Michael J. Peters, all of Amarillo; a sister, Elizabeth Kinch, Derby; and one grandchild.

Glenn Silvis

ROSE HILL - Glenn W. Silvis, 66, of Rose Hill, died May 3, 2000, at his home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. Military burial honors will be in Wilmot Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight. The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8.

Memorials have been established with Hospice Inc. and Rose Hill United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the church or funeral home.

Silvis was born June 12, 1933, in Marienville, Pa., to Birdena (Gesin) and Doyle Silvis. He was educated in Marienville and as a young man worked on a dairy farm, cut wood and set pins at a bowling alley.

In May 1953 he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He also spent time in Kansas, Montana, Michigan, Thailand and Vietnam and was on temporary duty in Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, Japan, the Philippines, Australia, Korea and North Africa. He retired from the Air Force as a chief master sergeant in 1977, following 24 years of service.

After his retirement he spent 10 years at Boeing as an aircraft quality assurance inspector.

On Feb. 12, 1956, he married Phylis Joy Adams in Topeka.

Silvis attended Rose Hill United Methodist Church and was a member of the Derby Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife, Phylis Silvis, Rose Hill; a son, Duane Wesley Silvis, Augusta; two daughters, Cynthia Dale Kerr, Rose Hill, and Pamela Rene Silvis, Lansing; four brothers, Arland Silvis, Ontario, Calif., Myron Silvis, Marienville, Pa., Cornelius Silvis, Jamestown, N.Y., and Charles Silvis, Sandy, Ore.; a sister, Vonda Kloke, Pocahontas, Ill.; and nine grandchildren.

Robert Price

HERMITAGE, Tenn. - The Rev. Dr. Robert P. Price, 91, of Hermitage, formerly of Winfield, died May 4, 2000.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Grace United Methodist Church in Mount Juliet, Tenn. The Rev. Ken Edwards will officiate. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park in Martinsville, Va. Hermitage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with the Grace United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 2905 N. Mount Juliet Road, Mount Juliet, Tenn. 37076.

Price was an ordained Methodist pastor for 61 years, a local church pastor for 16 years, a college professor for 19 years and a volunteer minister in churches and prisons for 26 years. He was the head of the psychology department at Southwestern College from 1958 to 1963.

Survivors include a son, the Rev. R. Preston Price; a brother, William Dalton; three sisters, Helen Price McCandliss, Loula Price Nicks and Sallie Price Powers; two grandsons and a great-grandson.

Cecil Coffey

Services for Cecil R. Coffey were held at 11 a.m. May 6, 2000, at the First Christian Church. The Rev. Shawn Sturm officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Winfield American Legion Post 10 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544 performed military graveside honors.

Martha Brandenburg was the organist, and Arlan and Wilma Anglemyer were vocalists. Music included "How Great Thou Art" and "The Old Rugged Cross."

Honorary casket bearers were former members of "F" Battery, Second Battalion, 161st Field Artillery: Jack Embrey, Henry Kampschroeder, Donald Fowler, Joseph Whitehead, Wayne Birdsong and Clay Lemert.

Casket bearers were Bruce, John and Roger Coffey, Rick White, Scott Sturm and T.J. Gott.

Memorials have been established with the First Christian Church and the Brain Injury Association of Kansas.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Charles Dietrick

Charles Edward "Ed" Dietrick, 88, of Winfield, died April 20, 2000, in Winfield.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Highland Cemetery. Cremation has taken place. The Rev. Fred Houston will officiate.

Anyone wishing to sign a register book can do so at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home through Friday.

Dietrick was born June 4, 1911, in Pine Bluff, Ark., to Sue Gladys (Kilmer) and Joshua Alexander Dietrick. The family moved to Winfield where he graduated from high school in 1929. He graduated from Southwestern College with a pre-medicine degree in chemistry in 1933.

On Oct. 8, 1937, he married Ann Marie Marcum in Kingman. She died April 13, 1990.

While in Kingman, Dietrick owned and operated a laundry business. The family moved to Wichita and then to Salina where he was engaged in the consumer loan business. He was appointed state small-loan commissioner and served a two-year term in Topeka. After the family returned to Winfield in the 1970s, he was self-employed doing antique refurbishing and selling business supplies.

Dietrick was active in the Elks Lodge and Kiwanis and Lions clubs and attained the Sublime Degree of the Master Mason.

Survivors include two sons, Charles Parker Dietrick, Cambridge, Mass., and Rex Edward Dietrick, San Marcos, Calif.; a brother, Donald Dietrick, and a friend, Mary Scott Jarvis, both of Winfield; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
