Merle Jordan
GRENOLA - Willard Merle Jordan, 95, formerly of rural Grenola, died June 19, 2000, at Walnut Hill Nursing Center in Winfield.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Greenlawn Cemetery. The Revs. Don Foster and Larry Bowyer will officiate.
Memorials have been established with the Grenola Historical Society and the Grenola United Methodist Church. Contributions can be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
Jordan was born Sept. 25, 1905, near Grenola, to Charles and Lottie Belle (Logston) Jordan. He attended school in the Grenola community.
On Feb. 5, 1927, he married Margaret Neubecker at Howard.
Jordan was a longtime farmer and rancher and also worked at the Moline and Cedar Vale sale barns until he was injured by a horse in 1974.
Jordan was a former member of the watershed district board and a member of the Grenola school board when Grenola High School was built. He served on several other boards and was a longtime member of the Grenola Christian Church.
His wife died July 27, 1989.
Survivors include a son, R.G. Jordan, and a daughter, Beverly Wolfe, both of Grenola; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Evelyn Laurie
GRENOLA - Evelyn Delores Laurie, 56, a longtime resident of Grenola, died June 19, 2000, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Grenola Christian Church with the Rev. Wallace Wartick officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with the Grenola Christian Church and the American Diabetes Association. Contributions can be made at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard.
Laurie was born Nov. 13, 1943, at Woodston, to Joseph P. and Lucille Vorestine (Ensley) Boulanger. She attended school in Woodston and Elk Falls before graduating from Howard High School in 1962.
She was employed in the Moline area after high school.
On Aug. 7, 1966, she married Rolland Merle Laurie at Grenola. She was a homemaker and employed by the Kansas Social and Rehabilitation Service's in-home care program for many years.
Laurie had served as the Grenola representative on the Elk County Council on Aging and on the board for the Grenola Senior Center. She was a member of the Osage Nation and the Grenola Christian Church.
Her husband died April 14, 1998.
Survivors include her companion, Charles Barnett, Grenola; two sons, Donnie Laurie, Mulvane, and Martin Laurie, Ada, Okla.; two daughters, Karen Clubb, Grenola, and Betty Krause, Parsons; three brothers, Wayne Boulanger, Independence, Phillip Boulanger, Brunswick, Ga., and Edward Boulanger, Eureka; a sister, Patricia Corle, Moline; and two grandchildren.
Nettie Thompson
ARKANSAS CITY - Services for Nettie M. Thompson were held at 10:30 a.m. May 19, 2000, in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. The Rev. Ken Davidson officiated, and family members served as casket bearers.
Memorials have been established with Hospice Inc. and Senior Services of Wichita.
Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Harold Cadwell
Services for Harold Dean Cadwell were held at 2 p.m. June 20, 2000, at First Baptist Church. The Rev. Warren Smith officiated. Burial was in Mount Vernon Cemetery.
Marilyn Buffum was the organist, and J.K. Campbell sang "Beyond the Sunset" and "How Great Thou Art."
Casket bearers were Charles Cadwell, Glen, Greg, Mike and Scott Chattam and Cory Young.
A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Ben Green
Ben Green, 77, of 1714 E. 11th, Winfield, died June 19, 2000, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight.
A memorial has been established with the Burden Volunteer Fire Department. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
Green was born June 19, 1923, in Marshall County, to Elizabeth (Flower) and Emil Green. He was educated in Prairie Ridge School. Following eighth-grade graduation, he moved to Kokomo, Colo., where he lived with his sister, Lydia, and worked in mines until World War II.
Following the war, he was employed by Rural Electric Supply Co. of Lamar, Mo. In 1947 he transferred to the Winfield area where he met and married Norma Lee Leach in 1948 in Udall. In 1949 they moved to Burden.
In 1963 Green began working for the Burden Elevator Co. and worked there for many years. In the late 1970s he began employment with the Cowley County Highway Department.
Green was a member of the United Methodist Church, Clinton Lodge Ancient Free & Accepted Masons and Order of Eastern Star, all of Burden, and several bluegrass music associations. He also played guitar and sang at area nursing homes.
Survivors include his wife, Norma Green, Winfield; two sons, Norman Green, Winfield, and Robert Green, Mulvane; two brothers, Joe Green, Wichita, and Harold Green, Avoca, Iowa; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Patricia Taylor
WICHITA - Patricia (Brennan) Taylor, 83, of Wichita, retired journalist and homemaker, died June 19, 2000.
A Rosary service will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday at Downing & Lahey Mortuary East Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Mount Vernon Cemetery
near Winfield.
Memorials have been established with St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, the University of Montana Foundation and the American Cancer Society.
Taylor was a reporter and editor for the Great Falls (Mont.) Tribune and the Casper (Wyo.) Star-Tribune and a contributor to the Wichita Eagle's "My Turn" column, Active Aging and the Montana Historical Society Journal.
She completed a bachelor's degree in journalism at the University of Montana in 1938.
Taylor was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Delta Delta Delta sorority, the Wichita Art Association, Women in Communications, the Junior League of Denver and Great Falls and the University of Montana Alumni Association.
She volunteered her services for St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, the Wichita Council of Catholic Women, the Catholic Life Center, Delta Delta Delta Alumni Chapter, the Larksfield Place Resource Center and the Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Society.
Her husband, Fred Taylor, formerly of Winfield, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, James Taylor, Claremont, Calif.; a sister, Mary B. Harstad, Glendive, Mont.; and a granddaughter.
Lela Tibbs
Lela B. Tibbs, 73, of 1112 E. 11th, Winfield, died June 20, 2000, in Winfield.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Akron Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday.
Tibbs was born July 1, 1926, on a farm near Eufaula, Okla., to Ada (Dunegan) and James Henry Ashley. She was educated in Wagoner, Okla., rural schools.
On Jan. 2, 1946, she married John Edward Tibbs in Kiowa. They farmed for 33 years after moving to the Winfield area in 1959. Her husband died Oct. 21, 1998.
Survivors include her daughter, Barbara Tibbs, Chanute; a sister, Anna Button, Ulysses; and four brothers, Ellis Ashley, Rogers, Ark., David Ashley and James Ashley, both of Wichita, and Phines Ashley, Ore City, Texas.
Benjamin Green
Services for Benjamin L. Green were held at 2 p.m. June 22, 2000, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. John Stone officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery. Clinton Lodge Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Burden performed graveside rites.
David Green sang "He Took Your Place" and "Will the Circle Be Unbroken?"
Honorary casket bearers were Brad McMinn, Larry Mossman, Bud Sweet and Mike Vargas.
