Edward Hankins
TOPEKA - Edward Ray Hankins, 67, of Topeka, died July 3, 2000, at Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center in Topeka.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Day Funeral Home, 1030 Mission Road, Wellington. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Shawnee Heights United Methodist Church, 6020 SE 44th St., Tecumseh.
Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight.

Hankins was born March 19, 1933, in Burden, to Ruth Ellen (Woodruff) and Daniel Ray Hankins. He was raised in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School. He received bachelor of science and master's degrees from Pittsburg State Teachers College.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955.
On June 26, 1955, he married Rose Marie Nichols in Oxford.
From 1958 to 1964 he served as an industrial arts teacher and basketball coach in Humboldt where he lived. From 1964 to 1978 he lived in Abilene where he was a physical education teacher and coached basketball, tennis and golf and was assistant football coach. He later became athletic director and vice principal of Abilene High School.
In 1978 he moved to Topeka where he became a vocational educational specialist for the Kansas State Department of Education. He later became coordinator for technical education at Kaw Area Technical School before retiring May 12, 1995.
He was a member of Shawnee Heights United Methodist Church, Capitol Post 1 American Legion, Phi Delta Kappa International, United States Tennis Association and the former Sunset Lions Club. He served as an ambassador for the Wood Valley Racquet Club and as a member of the board of directors of the Boys and Girls Club of Topeka.
Survivors include his wife, Rose Marie Hankins, Topeka; a daughter, Kammi Root, Winfield; a son, Ken Hankins, Wichita; a sister, Dee Ann Robinson, Mulvane; and two grandchildren.
Thad McCabe
Thad McCabe, 79, of Route 3, Winfield, died July 4, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. Military graveside services will be performed at Memorial Lawn Cemetery
in Arkansas City.
Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday.
A memorial has been established with the World War II Veterans Memorial. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
McCabe was born Sept. 25, 1920, in Geuda Springs, to Ruth (Quinn) and Marion D. McCabe. He graduated from Geuda Springs High School in 1938.
During World War II, he served in the Fifth Armored Division of the U.S. Army where he received many honors and medals, including the Bronze Star. He then joined the U.S. Air Force and served in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. He retired from the Air Force as a senior master sergeant on June 1, 1973, following 25 years of service.
In 1973 he moved to Winfield. On Jan. 4, 1989, he married Vera Barth in Rockport, Texas. They wintered in Texas.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and the Elks Lodge, all of Winfield; and the Masonic Lodge in Fort Worth, Texas.
Survivors include hs wife, Vera McCabe, Winfield; two sons, Steven Marion McCabe, Portland, Ore., and Dean Logan McCabe, Lancaster, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Leanna Wallerstedt, California, and Sandra Lee Allen, Tampa, Fla.; a brother, Logan McCabe, Lubbock, Texas; a sister, Margaret Christian, Wellington; three grandsons, two stepgrandchildren and one stepgreat-granddaughter.
Eli Smith
ARKANSAS CITY - Eli Vernon Smith, 72, of Arkansas City, died July 2, 2000, at Medicalodge North Post Acute and Rehabilitation Center in Arkansas City.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Hawks Funeral Home. The Rev. James Watson Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.
Smith was born on March 30, 1928, in Coyle, Okla., to Willie Mae (Benson) and Charles George Smith. He graduated from Oklahoma City High School.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.
His wife, Anna Marie Lolar Smith, died Jan. 30, 1996, after 30 years of marriage. The had lived in Las Vegas before moving to Winfield in the early 1960s and to Arkansas City in 1969.
He had worked for Eby Construction and Coon Construction and was a member of the laborers' union for several years.
Smith was a life member of Shelton-Beaty American Legion Post 18.
Survivors include his brother, James Smith, Oxford; and a sister, Mary Ivey, Oklahoma City.
Georgia Boggs
MANCHESTER, Conn. - Georgia May "Jo" (Lilleston) Boggs, 85, of Manchester, died July 5, 2000, at her home.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Manchester. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery
in Winfield.
Holmes-Hatkins Funeral Home of Manchester is in charge of the service. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is in charge of burial.

Boggs was born April 4, 1915, in Wichita, to Georgia (Terwilliger) and W.F. Lilleston. She married Frederick L. Boggs of Winfield.
A resident of Manchester since 1987, she was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Orford Parish, Daughters of the American Revolution, the Shakespeare Club and University Club.
Survivors include two daughters, Clara B. Schupak, Philadelphia, and Rebecca R. Jones, Manchester; and five grandchildren.
Ruth Broce
ARKANSAS CITY - Ruth V. Broce, 84, of Arkansas City, died July 4, 2000, in Wichita.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the First American Baptist Church in Arkansas City. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the building fund of the First American Baptist Church. Contributions may be left at the church or Hawks Funeral Home.
Friends may call at the funeral home tonight until 8.
Broce was born Dec. 29, 1915, on a farm north of Anthony, to Nora Vanilla (Osborn) and William Garfield Perry. She graduated from Anthony High School and did post-secondary work as well.
On Aug. 28, 1935, she married Harold J. Broce in Anthony. They lived in Harper County for nine years, then moved to a farm in Maple City where they lived for 32 years. They had lived in Arkansas City for the past 24 years.
She was a member of the First American Baptist Church and the Dexter Order of Eastern Star where she was a past worthy matron and past district aide.
Survivors include her husband, Harold Broce, Arkansas City; two daughters, Diana Grose, and Linda Broce, both of Arkansas City; two sons, Bill Broce, Lost Springs, and Keith Broce, Arkansas City; a brother, Cecil Osborn, Anthony; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Jack Fitch
ARKANSAS CITY - Jack D. Fitch, 87, of Arkansas City, died July 5, 2000, at Medicalodge North Post Acute and Rehabilitation Center in Arkansas City.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Riverview Cemetery.

Fitch was born Sept. 4, 1912, in Arkansas City, to Carrie Maude (Smith) and Edward Jackson Fitch. He was raised in Arkansas City and attended local schools. In 1940 he moved to Los Angeles.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. He returned to Arkansas City in 1946. During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Air Force. Following his discharge, he went to work for the U.S. Post Office in Los Angeles.
After he retired in 1972, he returned to Arkansas City.
Survivors include a sister, Jeanne Fitch, Arkansas City.
Howard Morton
A memorial service for Howard Morton, 91, who died June 30, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Grace United Methodist Church.
Morton willed his body the the University of Kansas Medical Research Hospital in Kansas City, Kan.
Memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church and Cumbernauld Village Hope Fund.
Survivors include a son, Herbert Morton, Winfield; a daughter, Winifred "Freddie" Lear, Longview, Texas; a brother, Cliff Morton, Enid, Okla.; two sisters, Ida Farmer, Muskogee, Okla., and Alyce Loper, Houston, Texas; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services for John Arthur Crill were held at 2 p.m. July 6 at Oak Hill Cemetery
