Thummel, Alice LaVerne Thummel, 62, died Monday, June 6, 2005 at the Atchison Medicalodge.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, June 9th, 2005 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, with Rev. Russ Cooper officiating. Burial will follow in the Sugar Creek Cemetery, Rushville, MO. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services on Thursday at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the NEK Multi-County Hospice, or the Common Good Fellowship Church. Condolences to the family may be sent on line to www.beckerdyer.com.

Alice L. Strawhacker was born on Jan. 15, 1943 in Platte County, MO., the daughter of Milton L. and Sarah J. (Bradley) Strawhacker. She attended Rushville Grade School, and DeKalb High School. She worked as a waitress and cook for many local restaurants, including Texaco and Lamp Lighter, Riverhouse, and was a cook for Medicalodge for over 7 years. She was member of the Rushville Christian Church and enjoyed reading, collecting pigs, was a avid K.U. Basketball fan, and especially loved her grandchildren.

Alice was married to Larry Boatright in June 1959. They were later divorced. She was married to Dennis R. Thummel in Aug. 1966. They too were later divorced. Survivors include four sons; Robbie and his wife Amy Boatright, Leavenworth, KS., Dennis and his wife Nancy Thummel, Atchison, KS., August “Ted” Thummel, Salina, KS., and George and his wife Aimee Thummel, Platte City, MO., a daughter; Alice R. “Missy” Roets, Salina, KS., two brothers; Dennis L. Strawhacker, Atchison, and Christopher C. Strawhacker, Stanberry, MO., two sisters; Joyce German, St. Joseph, MO., and Phyllis Shaefer, Hiawatha, KS., and sixteen grandchildren. Her parents, a daughter, Deborah Marie Calhoon, and one granddaughter preceded her in death.

Franklin, Henrietta Marie Franklin, 85 years old, died Monday, June 6, 2005 at the Atchison Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, June 10th, 2005 at the Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Robert Ziegler officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 P.M. on Thursday at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association, or Trinity Lutheran School Endowment Assoc. Condolences to the family may be left on line at www.beckerdyer.com.

Henrietta Handke was born on June 23, 1919 in Atchison, KS., the daughter of Henry and Hulda (Winkler) Handke. She graduated from Atchison High School and attended Atchison Business School. She worked most of her life as a housewife and homemaker. She had worked for short time as a waitress at the Atchison County Sale Barn. Mrs. Franklin was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Corinthians Circle of the church, a member of the Bendena Homemakers Club, and enjoyed gardening, and square dancing.

She was married to Franklin Peuker on Mr. Peuker preceded her in death on Oct. 3, 1951. She was later married to Riley C. Franklin, on Sept. 4, 1954. Mr. Franklin also preceded her in death on Aug. 24, 1989. Survivors include three sons; Franklin and his wife Cheryl Peuker, Topeka, KS., Henry L. and his wife Sharon Peuker, Bendena, KS., and Lester and his wife Susan Peuker, St. Joseph, MO., two step daughters; Marcille Hanlan, Blue Springs, MO., and Janice Handke, Atchison, KS., a sister, Ruth Anna Kimmi, Atchison, KS., seven grandchildren, eight step grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren. Her parents, and two brothers Lewis and Wilbur Handke preceded her in death.

Cline, James E. Cline, 81 years old, of Atchison, KS. died Saturday, June 4, 2005 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, June 8th, 2005 at the Trinity Lutheran Church, with Rev. Robert Ziegler officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Atchison, KS. The family will receive friend from 7 to 8:30 PM on Tuesday, June 7, 2005 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. The body will be moved to the church one hour prior to services. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Trinity Lutheran School Grant Fund, or the Trinity Lutheran Church Scholarship Fund. Condolences to the family may be sent on-line to www.beckerdyer.com.

James E. Cline was born on Jan. 29, 1924 in Iatan, MO., the son of Everett A. and Daisey Della (Parr) Cline. Jim worked as the molding supervisor, in the molding department for the former L.F.M./Rockwell International. He retired in 1983 after thirty-five years of work at the plant here in Atchison. Mr. Cline was a U.S. Army veteran having served in New Guinea, Philippine Islands, and Tokyo, Japan during World War II. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, served as a usher, an elder, and member of Pastor’s Sunday School Class. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post #1175, Atchison, KS. Mr. Cline enjoyed camping, fishing, car racing and go-cart racing.

Mr. Cline was married to Betty J. Hill on April 14, 1942 in St. Joseph; MO. Mrs. Cline survives of the home, Atchison, KS. Additional survivors include six sons; James W. and his wife Diane Cline, Mound View, MN., Thomas D. and his wife Connie Cline, Atchison, KS., Ronald E. and his wife, Judy Cline, Atchison, Ks., Donald E. and his wife, Catherine Cline, Tacoma, WA., Michael and his wife Betty Cline, Atchison, KS., and Paul C. and his wife Tracy Cline, Atchison, KS., a daughter and her husband Samuel Hitchens, Atchison, KS., a sister, Mrs. Marie Welder, Amazonia, MO., twenty-two grandchildren and thirty-six great grandchildren. His parents, a son; Gary R. Cline, two brothers; Lloyd and Joe Cline also preceded him in death.

Medlock, Virginia (Norton) Medlock, 96 years old, of Atchison, KS., died Wednesday, June 1, 2005 at the Atchison Senior Village.

Memorial services will be held at 3:00 PM on Monday, June 6, 2005 at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Peter Del Nagro officiating. The body has been cremated and private family interment will be in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM-3:00 PM on Monday, at First Presbyterian Church. Memorial contributions are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church or the American Cancer Society and may be sent to the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home who is in charge of the arrangements. Virginia Norton was born on Feb. 8, 1909 in Kansas City, MO., the daughter of Henry J. and Sally I. (McQueen) Norton. She attended grade school in Kansas City, graduated from the Northeast High School, Kansas City, MO. She moved to Atchison in 1928 and worked as a teacher for the U.S.D. #409 Atchison for over 26 years. She received her Masters degree in 1961 from the University of Kansas and retired as a first grade teacher in 1973. Mrs. Medlock was a member and first women elder of the First Presbyterian Church, Atchison; She also served as a Deaconess, Trustee and church treasurer for many years. Mrs. Medlock was a 50-year member of the PEO Chapter J, a member of the American Association of University Women, a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, and a life member of the National Education Assoc. She enjoyed reading, playing bridge.

She was married to Charles L. Medlock on Aug. 4, 1936 in Kansas City, MO., Mr. Medlock preceded her in death on Nov. 5, 1954. Her parents and two sisters also preceded her in death. Survivors include three sons, Gordon E and wife Barbara Medlock, Granger, Indiana, Charles L. and wife Mary Beth Medlock, Bartlesville, OK, and Dr. Paul N. and wife Claudia Medlock, Houston, TX., Eight Grandchildren ,19 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. div align="right">

< Gilliland, VALERA E. “TOY” GILLILAND, 51 years old, of Lancaster, KS. died Wednesday, June 1, 2005 at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

Memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, June 7, 2005 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. The body has been cremated and interment of the cremated remains will follow the service at the Lancaster Cemetery, Lancaster, KS. The family will receive friends from 1-2 PM on Tuesday at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Memorial contributions are suggested to help with final expenses. Valera Elizabeth Rossiter was born on May 22, 1954 in Fairview, New Mexico the daughter of Harold and Barbara (Burck) Rossiter. She graduated from Raytown South High School, Raytown, MO. Mrs. Gilliland owned and operated the Lancaster Café, Lancaster, KS. for many years and had worked for 5 years at the Golden Star Mfg. She enjoyed bowling, playing softball, and playing darts.

Survivor’s include three sons; Stanley M. Rumford, Atchison, Ks., Michael B. and his wife Richelle Rumford, Topeka, KS., and Patrick L. Gilliland, Lancaster, KS., a daughter, Jamie Harden, Lancaster, KS., her parents; Harold and Barbara Rossiter, Warsaw, MO., two brothers; Harold Rossiter, Jr., Raytown, MO., and James Rossiter, Colorado Springs, CO., a sister; Mrs. Barbara Blair, Everest, KS., two granddaughters, Samantha Harden, and Piper Schuh.

MILLER, Dorothy L. (Joyce) Miller, 70 years old of Denton, KS. died Wednesday, May 25, 2005 at the Atchison Hospital following a lengthy illness.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, May 28th, 2005 at the St. Benedicts Church, Bendena, KS. with Fr. Mike Koller as Celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Benedicts Cemetery, Bendena. A parish rosary will be recited at 6:30 PM on Friday, May 27th, followed by visitation until 9:00 PM at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, KS. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Dorothy L. (Joyce) Miller, RN Scholarship Fund, to be used for students in pursuit of a degree in nursing.

Dorothy Lucile Joyce was born on October 12, 1934 in Atchison, KS. the daughter of John Martin and Olive Lucille (Kout) Joyce. She attended grade school at Mt. Vernon, a one room grade school, graduated from Denton High School, 1952. She graduated from the St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in 1955. Mrs. Miller was a licensed registered nurse and practiced orthopedic nursing for several years in several different states including, MO., CA., TX., IL, and KS. From 1974 – 1986 Mrs. Miller was a nurse for Dr. Yoder’s practice in Denton, KS., from 1986-1991 she worked at the Heartland Health, St. Joseph, Mo.. From 1991-1996, Mrs. Miller worked as the Atchison Home Health Nurse. She retired in 1996 after 41 years of nursing. Mrs. Miller was a member of the St. Benedict’s Church, Bendena, KS., a member of the Ladies Council, and Parish Council of the church. She was a member of the Denton Alumni Association, the St. Joseph’s Hospital Nursing Association, and the Doniphan County Cheerio Club. She enjoyed flowers, birds, trees, sewing, traveling all over the world, including Western Europe,Panama, United Kingdom, Ireland, Mexico, Canada, and 49 states. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren, and her nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was married to Richard Wayne Miller on December 27, 1955 at St Benedicts Church, Bendena, KS. Mr. Miller survives of the home, Denton, KS. Additional survivors include two sons; Richard D. “Rick” and his wife Julie Miller, Lawrence, KS., Patrick C. “Pat” and his wife Sheri Miller, Farmington Hills, MI., two daughters; Barbara A. and her husband Blaine Holder, Atchison, KS, Deborah S. and her husband David Van Laar, New Brunsfels, TX., two brothers, John H. Joyce, St. Joseph, MO., and Gerald W. Joyce, Denton, KS., a sister, Rose Mary Dodge, Denton, KS., twelve grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

GREEN, Margaret Green, 92, Atchison, KS passed away Wednesday, May 18, 2005 at Atchison Hospital.

Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, May 21, 2005 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with the Rev. Lee Hendon officiating. Burial at Sunset Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 7:00-8:30 P.M. Friday at the funeral home, and 1 hour prior to services. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church and left in care of the funeral home. Mrs. Green was born March 27, 1913 in Corning, KS the daughter of Harve and Mae (Hiner) Hiltibrand. She was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She was a member of the First Christian Church and the CWF (Christian Women’s Fellowship). She had worked for Ramsey’s, and Runyan’s and Tober’s as a sales clerk for a number of years. Margaret enjoyed collecting antiques and making jewelry trees.

Margaret married Charles Virgil Green on June 26, 1930 in Hiawatha, KS. He preceded her in death on July 23, 1983. She was also preceded in death by a son Charles Virgil Green, Jr. in 1977 and 2 sisters.

She is survived by sisters Gertrude Ramsey of Denver, CO and Mary Montgomery of Rossville, KS. 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

SHELL, Helen L. Shell, 92 years old, of Fallbrook, CA., died Tuesday, May 3, 2005 in Fallbrook, CA.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, May 6th, 2005 at the Berry-Bell & Hall Mortuary, 333 N. Vine St., Fallbrook, CA., Graveside services and burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, May 11th, 2005 at the Evergreen Cemetery, Effingham, KS. with Rev. Jeff Cochran officiating. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association of San Diego, CA. The Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Mrs. Shell was born on April 21, 1913 in Everest, KS .Mrs. Shell was a homemaker and Pharmacist’s Assistant. Mrs. Shell was a member of the Cypress Twirlers Square Dance Club, and had volunteered for over 10 years at the La Paloma Community Hospital in Orange County.

Survivors include; two sons and their wife’s, Howard W. and Ingerlise Shell, and Lewis K. and Darla M. Shell, all of Fallbrook, CA., five grandchildren, John, Glenn, Lyle, Mark and Kari, and three great grandchildren.
