Mary Mosley

CEDAR VALE - Mary Louise (Love) Mosley, 88, formerly of Nashville, Tenn., died Aug. 23, 2000, at Cedar Vale Community Hospital. Harpeth Hill Funeral Home of Nashville will announce arrangements. Burial will be in their cemetery.

Wheeler Funeral Home of Cedar Vale is in charge of local arrangements.

Mosley was born Dec. 1, 1911, in Christian County, Ky., to Lillian (Stamper) and Roy David Love. She was raised in Christian County and attended Western State University in Bowling Green, Ky., for three years. She completed her degree at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

On April 28, 1950, she married John H. Mosley. He died in 1971.

For 30 years she worked for the federal government in Washington, D.C. She worked for the Veterans Administration; the Department of the Navy; the Health, Education and Welfare Department; and the Department of the Interior and retired as an office manager for the Department of Transportation in 1971.

She moved to Nashville where she attended the Baptist Church and was active in the Tennessee Historical Society. She also was a member of the Kentucky Historical Society.

She moved to Cedar Vale to be near her sister.

Survivors include her sister, Kathryn McMahan, Cedar Vale; nine nephews and four nieces.

Audie Vicars

Services for Audie Maxine Vicars were held at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 23 at Central Baptist Church. The Rev. Ken Beckner officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

John Dalton was the vocalist. Gwen Lumbert was the organist. Vocal music included "In the Garden" and "You'll Never Walk Alone."

Casket bearers were Duane Burleson, Neil Dickson, Keith Lawless, Larry McCaslin, Larry Smith and Lloyd Stuckey.

Memorials have been established with Central Baptist Church and Victory in the Valley of Wichita.

Miles Funeral Service had charge of arrangements.

Fred Axtell

MOLINE - Fred Lawrence Axtell, 100, longtime resident of Moline, died Aug. 15, 2000, at Elk Manor Nursing Home in Moline.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Moline Cemetery. The Rev. John Foust will officiate.

A memorial has been established with Elk Manor Nursing Home.

Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard is in charge of arrangements.

Axtell was born Aug. 9, 1900, in Perry, in Jefferson County, to Irene (True) and Myron Axtell. He attended grade school in Argonia and graduated from Argonia High School. He also graduated with a bachelor of science degree in education from Pittsburg State University.

On May 16, 1936, he married Hazel Etta Knabe in Dodge City. They moved to Moline where he became the publisher of The Moline Advance. He was a newspaper publisher for many years and remained a commercial printer until his retirement. He had been a resident of Elk Manor since Aug. 15, 1989. Mrs. Axtell died April 8, 1999.

He was a member of the Moline Christian Church.

Survivors include a sister, Grace Taylor, Sun City, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

Billy Ledgerwood

CAMBRIDGE - Services for Billy L. Ledgerwood Sr. were held at 10 a.m. Aug. 23, 2000, in Cambridge Cemetery. The Rev. Shawn Sturm officiated.

Music included "The Lord's Prayer." Janelle Ledgerwood and Tristen Ledgerwood were soloists.

Winfield American Legion Post 10 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3544 provided military honors.

A memorial has been established with the Cambridge First Baptist Church.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Leanore Downing

ARKANSAS CITY - Leanore M. Downing, 81, of Arkansas City, died Aug. 27, 2000, at her home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery chapel. Hawks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions can be made to the First Southern Baptist Church Food Pantry through the funeral home.

Downing was born Sept. 25, 1918, in Missouri and graduated from Arkansas City High School.

On May 28, 1938, she married Joe Loren Downing in Newkirk. He died Sept. 21, 1990.

Downing was a waitress at the 166 Grill and Hillcrest Bowling Lanes and also worked at Mauer Neurer Meat Packing Plant.

She was a member of First Southern Baptist Church and the Order of Eastern Star. She also participated in a women's bowling league and in activities at the senior center.

Survivors include two sons, Larry Downing, Arkansas City, and Michael Downing, Fort Worth, Texas; two brothers, Bill Buck, California, and Frances Buck, Oregon; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Ruby Brotherton

MOLINE - Ruby A. Brotherton, 96, a longtime Longton resident, died Aug. 27, 2000, Elk Manor Nursing Home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Longton Cemetery with the Rev. Ted D. Davis officiating.

Memorials have been established with Hospice Inc. and the Longton Senior Center. Contributions can be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Brotherton was born Sept. 8, 1903, at Longton, to Alphard Millard and Anna Adelia (Blair) Atkinson. She attended school at Weir and Arcadia before moving with her family to Goodman, Mo.

On Dec. 22, 1920, she married Tony Sam Brotherton at Pineville, Mo., and they lived in Missouri until moving to Longton in 1944.

The couple moved to Wichita in the 1950s, and she worked at Hawk's Drug Store. They returned to Longton in 1962, and she operated the senior center for many years.

Her husband died in 1970.

Brotherton attended the First Baptist Church of Longton.

Survivors include a son, Max Brotherton, and a sister, Treva Kramer, both of Longton, 17 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great-grandchildren.

Marcella Burks

MANHATTAN - Marcella LeeAnn Burks, 24, of Manhattan, formerly of Arkansas City, died Aug. 25, 2000, at Stormont-Vail Medical Center in Topeka.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Arkansas City. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

A memorial scholarship fund has been established in her name. Contributions may be made through the Kansas State University Foundation, 2323 Anderson Ave., Manhattan, KS 66502, or through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

Burks was born Nov. 9, 1975, in Arkansas City. She attended Arkansas City schools and graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1994. In high school she participated in the Close-Up Leadership Program, Black Student Union and SADD. She was also on the student council and the girls golf team and a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Burks attended Kansas State University where she was dedicated to recruiting and retaining African-American students on campus. She was active in the Black Student Union which she served as assistant treasurer, treasurer, vice president and president. She also served as vice treasurer, treasurer, inside accounts specialist and registrar for the executive board of the Big 12 Council on Black Student Government.

She organized the first K-State Black Women's Day and received the mayor's proclamation during the last Martin Luther King Jr. Day. She worked as a student assistant in the KSU Office of Diversity and Dual Career Development, providing assistance to further the university's goal of appreciating diversity.

She served as Basileus of the Kappa Pi chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Most recently she served as a camp counselor for the First Tee National Golf Academy for underprivileged youth.

Burks graduated from K-State in May with a bachelor's degree in psychology with a minor in leadership studies and pre-law. She began a job with Kansas State University as special programs coordinator on Aug. 21.

She was an active member of St. James AME Church of Arkansas City.

Survivors include her parents, Janice E. Fulcher, Arkansas City, and Lamar E. Burks, Tulsa; a sister, Marshala Ann Burks, Dallas; a brother, Scott Preston Jr., Junction City; her grandparents, Annie Fulcher, Arkansas City, and Mr. and Mrs. Sam Burks, Tulsa; and her boyfriend, Derrick Evans, Denver.

Bradley Hughes

OLNEY, Ill. - Dr. Bradley B. Hughes, 41, of Olney, died Aug. 26, 2000, in Olney.

Private services will be held Wednesday in May Chapel, Lawrenceville, Ill. The Rev. David A. McNabb will officiate, and Summers-Kistler Funeral Home of Olney is in charge of arrangements.

The Dr. Bradley B. Hughes Scholarship Fund has been established at Palmer College of Chiropractic, 1000 Brady St., Davenport, IA 52803.

Hughes was born Dec. 7, 1958, in Manhattan, to Jack and Norma Jo (Baker) Hughes.

He graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Olney and the American Chiropractic Association.

Survivors include his wife, Wendy (Cook) Hughes, Noblesville, Ind.; a son, Blake Hughes, Carmel, Ind.; a daughter, Macy Hughes, Anderson, Ind.; a stepson, Seth Cook, Noblesville, Ind.; his father, Jack Hughes, Olney, Ill.; his sister, Rebecca Piper, Lawrenceville, Ill.; and his grandmother, Elsie Baker, Winfield.
