Josephine Livesay

Josephine Alice "Jo" Livesay, 70, of Winfield, died Aug. 27, 2000, at Good Samaritan Village.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in G.A.R. Cemetery in Miami, Okla.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9.

A memorial has been established with the American Lung Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Livesay was born March 18, 1930, in Picher, Okla., to Irene (Carbaugh) and Charles Jackson. She was raised in Picher and graduated from high school there in 1948.

In November 1950 she married Richard Livesay in St. Louis, and they resided in Picher. They later divorced.

In 1951 Livesay graduated from nursing school in St. Louis. After graduation, she worked at Picher Hospital until it closed. She then worked for Miami Baptist Hospital for 35 years until her retirement in 1990.

She was a member of the First Christian Church of Picher.

Survivors include a son, Everett Livesay, Winfield; a daughter, Paula Livesay Hawkins, Houston; her mother, Irene Jackson, Winfield; and three grandchildren.

Kathryn Ramsey

PONCA CITY - Kathryn Edith Ramsey, 74, longtime Ponca City resident, died Aug. 25, 2000, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center.

Services were to be at 10 a.m. today in Miller-Stahl Funeral Chapel, Newkirk, with the Rev. Virgil Swift officiating. Burial was in Newkirk Cemetery.

Ramsey was born March 19, 1926, in Montgomery County, Misssissippi, to Pearl Marcellus and Elyse (Bibey) Hester. She attended school in Montgomery County.

In 1944 she moved to Ponca City where she worked in Woolworth Department Store.

On Dec. 11, 1945, she married Ivan Dean Ramsey in Winfield. They lived in Arkansas City, California and Kansas City before moving to Ponca City.

Ramsey attended Southern Baptist churches.

Survivors include her husband, Ivan Ramsey, and a daughter, Deanna Hass, both of Ponca City; two sisters, Betty Jones, Ponca City, and Norma Hutchison, Tulsa; and one grandson.

A son, Harold Ivan Ramsey, preceded her in death.

John Downing

ARKANSAS CITY - John Clinton Downing, 80, of Arkansas City, died Aug. 27, 2000, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Riverview Cemetery. Capt. Tom McDowell of the Salvation Army will officiate. Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with the Salvation Army.

Downing was born Sept. 19, 1919, in Guthrie, Okla., to Della Estelle (Smith) and James B. Downing. He was raised in Guthrie and graduated from Guthrie High School in 1939.

Before World War II he was a member of the Oklahoma Civilian Conservation Corps. During the war he served in the U.S. Army as an armored car commander. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

On March 21, 1964, he married Elva Marie Downing in Marlow, Okla. She died in 1980.

Downing worked as an engineer for the Santa Fe Railroad for 43 years before retiring in 1985.

He was a longtime member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, Spencer-Ralston Post 1254 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Sheldon-Beaty Post 18 of the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include a son, James Downing, Oklahoma; a daughter, Selina Graham, Arkansas City; and a grandson.

Louis Hall

Louis B. Hall, 83, of Winfield, died Aug. 28, 2000, at Riverview Manor in Oxford.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church. Burial will be private. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with the scholarship fund at Trinity Lutheran Church.

Hall was born June 17, 1917, in Grosse Ile, Mich., to Winifred (Inglis) and Douglas Hall. He was raised in Illinois and graduated from Flossmoor (Ill.) High School. He attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

During World War II Hall served in the U.S. Army.

On Dec. 12, 1944, he married Janis C. Campbell. They lived in Anaheim, Calif., and Pacific City, Ore., before moving to Winfield. She died Sept. 7, 1991.

From 1952 to 1981 Hall worked as an industrial engineer for Hughes Aircraft.

He was active in the Lutheran Church and schools in communities in which he lived. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

A constitutional scholar, he had written many articles. He was actively interested in current political and social issues.

Survivors include two daughters, Marjorie Hall-Bicker, Winfield, and Winifred Corey, Temecula, Calif.; a sister, Barbara Ady, Palo Alto, Calif.; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

A son, Richard Hall, died in 1996.

Mary Dunbar

Mary L. Dunbar, 56, of 1507 Manning, Winfield, died Aug. 29, 2000, at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital in El Dorado.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday.

A memorial has been established with First Christian Church. Contributions may be made at the funeral home.

Dunbar was born July 15, 1944, in Kansas City, Mo., to Frances E. (Wheeler) and Jesse J. Spencer. As a young girl she lived in Osawatomie where she graduated from high school in 1962. She was first employed by Osawatomie State Hospital that same year.

On Oct. 2, 1976, she married Charles R. Dunbar in Winfield, and they lived in Winfield.

Employed at Winfield State Hospital & Training Center before her retirement in 1997, she worked for the state of Kansas for 32 years. She graduated from Butler County Community College as a licensed practical nurse.

In 1998 she began employment at the El Dorado Correctional Facility.

Dunbar was a member of the First Christian Church and served on the Kansas State Nursing Board for eight years. She helped with the Walnut Valley Festival from 1982 to 1997 and was involved with the Kansas State Mental Health Aides Association.

Survivors include her husband, Charles R. Dunbar, and a son, Charles L. Dunbar, both of Winfield; three sisters, Barbara Zuel and Florence Harclerode, both of Osawatomie, and Cheryl York, Paola; and one granddaughter.

Floyd Barkman

WICHITA - Floyd J. Barkman, 77, of Wichita, formerly of Winfield, died Aug. 30, 2000, at his home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Old Mission Funeral Home in Wichita.

Memorials have been established with the American Cancer Society and Hospice Inc. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Barkman was born June 28, 1923, in Pawhuska, Okla., to Norma A. (Lindsay) and Ira D. Barkman. When he was five years old, the family moved to a farm near Winfield. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1941.

After graduation Barkman attended welding school in Wichita. Then he moved to San Diego where he worked for Consolidated Aircraft and became an instructor.

On March 12, 1944, he married Belva "Penny" Shrader in Ocean Beach, Calif. They made their home in San Diego.

Shortly after they married, he was drafted into the Army. He served in the Army Air Corps for three months, then returned to San Diego. In 1945 he was called back for another three months.

Barkman and his family then returned to Kansas to farm about 10 miles east of Winfield where they lived until 1969. Barkman and his wife left the farm, and he became self-employed in direct sales.

He was a member of American Legion Post 4 in Wichita.

Survivors include his wife, Penny Barkman, Wichita; three sons, Floyd J. Barkman, Hutchinson, and Donald L. Barkman and Kenneth D. Barkman, both of Tulsa; a brother, Ira D. Barkman, California; three sisters, Marie Brooks, Newton, Darlene Roe, Derby, and Barbara Watters, Illinois; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Edward Haines

DOUGLASS - Edward C. Haines, 81, a retired farmer, died Aug. 30, 2000, in Wichita.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Lone Star Cemetery east of Douglass. The Rev. Keith Dudeck will officiate. Hilyard-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Haines was born Oct. 21, 1918, in Satanta, to Edward Cleveland and Sarah Maxwell Haines.

On March 3, 1949, he married Margaret Knostman in Kansas City, Mo. She died in 1974.

On Oct. 17, 1975, he married Virginia Kunkel in Douglass.

Haines was a member of the Augusta United Methodist Church, Latham Masonic Lodge, Augusta Order of Eastern Star and Wichita Consistory and Midian Shrine.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Haines, Douglass; a daughter, Mary Lynn Reed, Wichita; two sons, Larry Haines, Excelsior Springs, Mo., and Max Haines, McPherson; a sister, Jody Jesperson, Providence R.I.; two brothers, George Haines, Wichita, and Fred Haines, Kelseyville, Calif.; a stepson, Glenn Kunkel, Chanute; one grandson, one great-granddaughter, two stepgrandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
