Elsie Morris

Elsie L. Morris, 86, of 905 Alexander, Winfield, died Sept. 14, 2000, at her residence.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service.

A memorial has been established with the First Baptist Church. Contributions may be made through the church or funeral home.

Morris was born Jan. 31, 1914, in rural Winfield, to Blanche R. (Rockwell) and Thaddeus O. Morris. She lived in Winfield all her life. In 1934 she graduated from Winfield High School.

Morris was employed by Winfield Laundry as a press person for 11 years. She retired in 1961.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Circle Ladies Group and William Newton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

Survivors include two cousins, Carl Morris, Shady Side, Md., and Oliver Mooney, Carlsbad, Calif.

Helen Black

Helen Black, 87, of 815 Loomis, Winfield, died Sept. 17, 2000, at her home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorials have been established with the Alzheimer's and Related Diseases Foundation and the First United Methodist Church.

Black was born Oct. 3, 1912, in Kendall, Mich., to Nellie (Rood) and George F. Wenrich.

On Oct. 3, 1935, she married William J. Black in Winfield. She had a beauty shop in her home for several years.

Black was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Friendship Meals bridge club and a former member of Queen City Chapter 138, Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include her husband, William J. Black, Winfield; a daughter, Jean Martin, Denver, Iowa; a sister, Nellie Crowley, California; two brothers, Harold Wenrich, Belle Plaine, and Ben Wenrich, Eugene, Ore.; and two grandchildren.

Donald Evers

ENID, Okla. - Donald F. Evers, 66, of Enid, died Sept. 16, 2000, at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Redeemer Lutheran Church. The Rev. Dwayne J. Schroeder will officiate, and burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions can be made through the funeral home to the Horn of Plenty or Lutheran Hour Ministries.

Evers was born March 8, 1934, near Breckinridge, Okla., to Belva (Bacon) and Julius J. Evers. He attended Union School District 30 and graduated from Garber High School in 1952. He joined the United States Navy during the Korean War and served from 1953 to 1957.

On April 19, 1958, he married Rose Maly.

Evers worked for Champlin Petroleum Co. as a data processor for 24 years, as Garfield County third deputy for 11 years until his retirement in 1999 and as an advisor for Peoples First in Enid.

He was a volunteer for Meals On Wheels, coordinator for Horn of Plenty and secretary-treasurer of the Enid zone of the Lutheran Layman's League. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church where he served as an elder and was past president of the congregation.

Survivors include his wife, Rose Evers, Enid; two daughters, Kimberly Bowlin, Winfield, and Brenda Andrew, Oklahoma City; a son, John Evers, Enid; his father, Julius J. Evers, and two sisters, Beatrice Green and Donita Southwick, all of Garber; a brother, Verlon Evers, Oklahoma City, and five grandchildren.

Elizabeth Purdy

Elizabeth L. Purdy, 92, of Winfield, died Sept. 18, 2000, at Cumbernauld Village.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. The Rev. Steve Souther will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Cowley County Mental Health Association in memory of Muriel Carpenter.

Purdy was born Nov. 8, 1907, near Udall, to Grace B. (Kimball) and Donald C. McKinlay. She attended rural schools and Udall schools and graduated from Winfield High School.

She also attended Southwestern College and graduated from the College of Emporia. She taught school for four years.

In 1936 she married Herbert Preston Carpenter. He died in 1959.

In 1960 she married Robert Manley Purdy. He died in 1967.

Purdy had lived in Wichita prior to moving to Winfield in 1970.

A member of the First Presbyterian Church, Purdy was a deaconess and member of the Women's Circle. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Community Council, the 20th Century Club in Wichita and the Tri Psi group.

Survivors include a daughter, Margaret Carpenter Peterson, Boulder, Colo.; two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

A daughter, Muriel Carpenter, preceded her in death.

Alice Allen

WICHITA - Alice Mable Allen, 91, formerly of Denver, died Sept. 18, 2000, at Briarwood Nursing Center in Wichita.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Moline Cemetery. Lloyd G. Zimmerman will officiate.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Allen was born Dec. 6, 1908, in Waubay, S.D., to Gertrude (Johnson) and Charles Milton Spearbeck. She began school in Waubay before moving with her family to Minneapolis, Minn., in 1914. In 1922 she moved to Tacoma, Wash., then returned to South Dakota in 1929.

In 1934 she married Clement Lester McLean. They lived in Aberdeen, S.D., where she was a homemaker and worked as a commercial seamstress. Her husband preceded her in death.

In the 1960s she moved to Denver where she married Gilbert Charles Allen in 1966. He also preceded her in death.

Allen moved to Wichita in March 1999 to be near her daughter.

She attended the Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Greta Ware, Derby; three sons, Lester McLean, Thousand Oaks, Calif., Harold McLean, Corona, Calif., and LeRoy McLean, Sedgwick, Colo.; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Barbara Mullen

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Barbara Alice Goodenough Mullen, 96, of Corpus Christi, died Sept. 18, 2000, in Corpus Christi.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Falfurrias (Texas) Burial Park. Maxwell P. Dunn Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mullen was born March 20, 1904, in Ruston, La., to Sarah (Milner) Price and Fred Goodenough. The family moved to Falfurrias when she was 14. After graduating from Falfurrias High School, she attended Southwest Texas College in San Marcos. The family moved to Corpus Christi in the mid-1920s.

Her husband, O.L. Mullen, died in 1988.

Survivors include two stepsons, Bud Mullen, Wichita, and Gene Mullen, Marysville, Wash.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth Purdy

Elizabeth L. Purdy, 92, died at Cumbernauld Village in Winfield on Sept. 18, 2000.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. The Rev. Steve Souther will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 tonight.

A memorial has been established with the Cowley County Mental Health Association in memory of Muriel Carpenter.

Donald Askins

MULVANE - Donald E. Askins, 62, of Mulvane, died Sept. 19, 2000.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Mulvane Cemetery. Senter-Smith Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Legion Post 136, 410 SE Louis Drive, Mulvane, KS 67110.

Askins was born Aug. 1, 1938, in Winfield, to Iris and Carl Askins.

On April 8, 1972, he married Donna Aimes in Mulvane.

Askins was a 20-year veteran of the U.S Air Force, retiring with the rank of technical sergeant. He owned Askins Heating and Air Conditioning until his retirement.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Askins, Mulvane; a daughter, Susan Perry, Fayetteville, N.C.; two sons, Keith Askins, Lily, Pa., and Michael Askins, Mulvane; his parents, Carl and Iris Askins, Winfield; a brother, Wayne Askins, Copan, Okla.; two sisters, Geraldine Palmer, Arkansas City, and Lila Platter, Fairview, Okla.; and 11 grandchildren.

A son, Leland Askins, preceded him in death.
