James Johnson

ARKANSAS CITY - James O. "Jim" Johnson, 73, of Arkansas City, died Oct. 17, 2000, at Medicalodge East.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Greenwood Cemetery in Eureka. The Rev. Bill Coburn will officiate.

The family suggests memorials to the donor's favorite charity in Johnson's memory. Contributions may be made through Campbell-Kelley Funeral Home in Eureka.

Johnson was born Dec. 6, 1926, in Eureka, to Opal (Wilson) and Audie O. Johnson. He lived in Eureka with his Grandmother Mary "Nan" Wilson and Aunt Dolly Wilson-Buckler until 1969. He lived in the Conway Springs Nursing Home for 20 years. Since 1989 he lived first at Focus Developmental Center and later at Southwind Residential Services, both in Winfield.

Survivors include two brothers, Ron Johnson, Kimberling City, Mo., and Phil Rush, Conway Springs.

Anna Miles

Anna H. Waldron Miles, 98, lifelong Winfield area resident, died Oct. 18, 2000, at Good Samaritan Village.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon to 9 p.m. Friday.

A memorial has been established with the Cowley County Mental Health Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Miles was born Dec. 8, 1901, on a farm east of Winfield, to Catherine May (Gann) and John Lewis Brant. She was educated in rural schools.

In 1929 she married Roy Miles. They lived in Winfield throughout their marriage. She helped her husband and son at the White Lily Cafe which they owned for several years. Her husband died April 16, 1965.

A member of the First Baptist Church, she was also affiliated with the American Legion auxiliary.

Survivors include three sons, Stanton Miles, Rockport, Texas, Jim Miles, Wichita, and Don Miles, Winfield; nine grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.

A son, Bob Miles, preceded her in death.

Mary Shepherd

Services for Mary E. Griggs Shepherd were held at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 17 at Trinity Lutheran Church. The Rev. Roderick Hathaway officiated. Private inurnment was held at Union-Graham Cemetery.

Diane Glasgow was the organist. Mark Schotte sang "Going Home." The congregation sang "Amazing Grace," "The Lord Is My Shepherd" and "Go, My Children, with My Blessing."

Memorials have been established with the Winfield Public Library and Trinity Lutheran Church.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Alta Grimes

TULSA - Alta Mary Grimes, 98, of Tulsa, formerly of Winfield, died Oct. 6, 2000, in Tulsa.

Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Oct. 11 at All Souls Unitarian Church. The Rev. Marlin Lavanhar officiated.

Donna VanDall was the organist. Terry Casey was the bagpiper.

Music included "Amazing Grace" and "I'll Fly Away."

Grimes was born Oct. 31, 1901, in rural Winfield, to Teresa Ellen (Miller) and James Walter Allen. She attended Victory Point rural school and Southwestern College.

She retired from Flint Steel where she was employed as an executive secretary.

Grimes was a member of All Souls Unitarian Church and the Tulsa Historical Society.

Her husband, Wirt Walton Grimes, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a sister, Theresa Alice Tucker, Tulsa.

Diane Willhoite

WICHITA - Diane L. Willhoite, 55, of Wichita, formerly of Winfield, died Oct. 19, 2000.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at West Heights United Methodist Church.

A memorial has been established with Victory in the Valley, 917 N. Market, Wichita, KS 67214.

Cochran Mortuary has charge of arrangements. Condolences may be e-mailed to the family via www.cochranmortuary.com.

Willhoite was an insurance biller and coder at Via Christi Medical Management and a member of the American Society of Professional Coders. For 10 years she lived in Winfield and was a nurse at Snyder Clinic.

Survivors include her husband, Charles Willhoite, Wichita; two daughters, Suzanne Willhoite, Valley Falls, and Tara Willhoite, Wichita; a son, Tracy Willhoite, Valley Falls; a brother, Thomas Brummett, Omaha, Neb.; and three grandchildren.

Richard Brown

Services for Richard Donovan Brown were held at 2 p.m. Oct. 20 at the First Christian Church. The Rev. Shawn Sturm officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Keith Anglemyer was the organist. Arlan and Wilma Anglemyer sang "How Great Thou At" and "It Is No Secret." The congregation sang "Amazing Grace."

Masonic ceremonies were conducted by members of Winfield Lodge 110 Ancient Free & Accepted Masons.

A United States Air Force color guard from McConnell Air Force Base performed military graveside services.

Honorary casket bearers were Richard Brock, Ron Farnsworth, Fred Fry, David Hall and Mary Spencer.

Casket bearers were Harry Evans, Norman Hearn, Ron Mozingo, Don Roberts, Dan Spangler, John Stoabs, Steve Tackett and Tom Wood.

Memorials were established with Winfield Troop 314 Boy Scouts of America and First Christian Church.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Chester Hobart

Services for Chester G. Hobart were held at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 18 in the Cedar Vale First Baptist Church. The Revs. Stanley Upchurch and Bill Alley officiated. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery in Grenola.

Evalyn Upchurch was the organist. Mark Johnson was the vocalist.

Honorary casket bearers were Zeb Hart, Paul Fulsom, Max Vaughan, Eldon Nelson and Roy McNow.

Casket bearers were Jim Powell, Kenny Bates, Ronnie Rogers, Craig Sweaney, Perry Fulsom and Sam Juul.

Memorials have been established with Hospice Inc. and the Cedar Vale First Baptist Church.

Eileen Doucette

Eileen T. Doucette, 74, of 3610 Quail Hollow Drive, Winfield, died Oct. 23, 2000, at her home.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at Holy Name Catholic Church at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Inurnment will be in Lynn, Mass. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc.

Doucette was born Dec. 18, 1925, in Lynn, Mass., to Lillian (Goodrich) and John McDonald. She was raised and educated in Lynn.

On July 13, 1955, she married Russell A. Doucette in Lynn. He died Jan. 3, 1980.

Doucette worked in production control for General Electric in Lynn until retiring in 1988.

She moved to Florida in 1991 and to Winfield in 1999.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lynn.

Survivors include her daughter, Susan Russell, Winfield; her son, Russell J. Doucette, Lake Forest, Calif.; her sister, Ruth Hickey, Lynn; and four grandchildren.

Vivian Poole

Vivian L. Poole, 87, of Winfield, died Oct. 22, 2000, at Good Samaritan Village in Winfield.

In accordance with her wishes, her body was donated to the University of Kansas Medical School for research. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Poole was born April 20, 1913, in Washington, D.C., to Billie (Mitchell) and Ray Weadon.

In 1932 she married John Poole. They later divorced.

After finishing high school she moved to New York in 1941 and worked for Voice of America until 1951. She then returned to Washington where she worked for the State Department as an efficiency expert until her retirement in 1968.

In May 1953 she married Thomas K. Myer in Silver Spring, Md. He died in 1993.

After her retirement, she did a lot of traveling. She moved to Winfield in 1996 to be with her family.

Survivors include a daughter, Melissa Whitney, Winfield; a sister, Peggy Murphy, Spokane, Wash.; and two grandchildren.
