Mattie Phillips

Mattie N. Phillips, 95, of Winfield, died Oct. 29, 2000, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday.

A memorial has been established with the First Presbyterian Church. Contributions may be made through the church or funeral home.

Phillips was born Feb. 22, 1905, in Emporia, to Nannie (Banks) and James L. Campbell. After her mother died when Phillips was 7, she lived with her aunt, Mrs. Squire Johnson, in Winfield and attended Winfield schools.

At St. John's College she studied organ performance and music. She also studied piano at Southwestern College.

In 1928 she married Leroy Phillips in Newkirk, and they resided in Winfield. She worked at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center for 10 years before her retirement in 1972. Her husband died in 1981.

A member of the First Presbyterian Church, she served as a deacon and on several committees. She was a member of the Murray Sunday School class, Merri-Mac Mariners, Tuesday at 10 Bible Study and Janet Hodson Circle.

She was also a member of Manila Chapter 22, Order of Eastern Star, and held four grand offices during her more than 50 years of membership.

Survivors include a daughter, Leoda Pryor, Winfield; a stepdaughter, Tressie Griffie, Los Angeles; five grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

A son, James Morris Matthews, preceded her in death.

Conception Tarin

Conception J. Tarin, 62, of 1602 Manning, Winfield, died Oct. 31, 2000, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

A Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Friday at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Name Catholic Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 10 a.m. until time for the Rosary.

A memorial has been established with Holy Name Catholic Church.

Tarin was born Jan. 5, 1938, in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico, to Adelia Jimenez and Agapito Tarin. He was educated in Mexico and served in the Mexican army.

On Oct. 12, 1964, he married Maria Carrasco. He lived in Presidio, Texas, before moving to Winfield in 1979.

A mariachi musician, he was employed by Daniels Ready Mix as a driver.

Survivors include his wife, Maria Tarin, Winfield; four daughters, Rosa Orosco, Mireya Retina and Marivel Suastegui, all of Phoenix, and Nubia Tarin, Derby; four sons, Conception Tarin Jr., Phoenix, and Ervey Tarin, Auden Tarin and Javier Tarin, all of Winfield; three brothers, Jesus Tarin, Ferman Tarin and Lupe Tarin, and a sister, Angelina Hernandez, all of New Mexico; and 16 grandchildren.

William Foster

LAMAR, Mo. - William Clarence Foster, 87, of Lamar, died Oct. 24, 2000, following a short illness.

Services were held Oct. 29 in Lohmeyer-Konantz Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Doug Oakes officiated. Burial was in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Music included "Who Holds Tomorrow?" and "Whispering Hope." Soloist was Mike Gage, and organist was Jacque Gage. Casket bearers were his grandchildren.

Foster was born Feb. 11, 1913, on a farm between Burden and Atlanta, to Effie (Moore) and William T. Foster. He attended Hardscrabble Rural School and graduated from Burden High School in 1930.

On Feb. 23, 1934, he married Mary L. Cunningham in Wichita. She died Dec. 28, 1984.

Foster had lived in Barton County, Mo., since 1965, moving there from Cabool, Mo. He was a cattle and crop farmer until his retirement in 1975.

He was a member of the First Christian Church in Lamar.

Survivors include a daughter, LeAnn Campbell, Lamar; two sons, Sam Foster, Lamar, and Eddie Foster, Bonnie Lake, Wash.; a sister, Iris Jackson, Winfield; a brother, Billy Foster, Fairfax, Okla.; 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

A son, Bill Foster, preceded him in death.

Eldon Shugart

SEVERY - Eldon Elmer Shugart, 86, longtime resident of Severy, died Nov. 1, 2000, at Howard Twilight Manor.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church. The Rev. Kibum Kim will officiate. Burial will be in South Lawn Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with Hospice Inc. and Howard Twilight Manor. Contributions may be left with Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Shugart was born Aug. 28, 1914, in McDonough County, Ill., to Rachel D. (Spiker) and Leroy Elmer Shugart. The family moved to Missouri when he was a child. They later moved to a farm near Climax where he attended school.

On July 30, 1940, he married Agnes Louise Dixon in Howard.

Shugart was a bulk agent for Standard Oil until his retirement in March 1976.

He was a past noble grand of the Odd Fellows Lodge in Severy. At an early age he joined the Christian Church in LaBelle, Mo., and transferred his membership to the Severy United Methodist Church in 1945.

Survivors include his wife, Louise Shugart, Severy; a son, LeRoy Shugart, McPherson; six daughters, Lois Klepper, Severy, Janice Korte, Wellington, Linda Crismas, Humboldt, Carol Shugart, LaCygne, Jo Shugart, Springfield, Mo., and Beth Shugart, Wichita; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Viola Whitehill

ARKANSAS CITY - Viola Schifferdecker Whitehill, 103, retired homemaker and teacher, of Arkansas City, died Oct. 30, 2000, at Presbyterian Manor Health Care Center.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Cremation has taken place.

Memorials have been established with the First United Methodist Church and the Presbyterian Manor Good Samaritan Fund. Contributions may be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

Whitehill was born Aug. 22, 1897, in Norborne, Mo., to Arabelle (Merriman) and August Schifferdecker. She was raised in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School with a normal training certificate to teach school.

She taught in Windsor, Colo., and in several schools in and around Arkansas City.

On Aug. 1, 1923, she married Merril C. Whitehill in Winfield. They made their first home in Arkansas City before moving to Zionville, Ind., when the Shell Refinery closed. They later moved to Decatur, Ill., before returning to Arkansas City. Her husband died Oct. 9, 1965.

Whitehill was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, Arkansas City Retired Teachers Association and historical society.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Bernice McAtee

ELLSWORTH - Bernice McAtee, 83, of Ellsworth, died Nov. 2, 2000, at Smoky Hill Rehabilitation in Salina.

A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at Parsons Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Bernard's Catholic Church. The Rev. Daniel Scheetz will officiate. Burial will be in Ellsworth Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Memorials have been established with St. Bernard's Catholic Church and Saline County Dialysis.

McAtee was born Feb. 5, 1917, in Ellsworth, to Tillie (Jiricek) and Lewis Talsky.

On Feb. 4, 1936, she married Frank McAtee in Ellsworth. He died April 2, 1989.

A lifelong resident of Ellsworth, she was co-owner of McAtee's 45 Restaurant.

She was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church and the church's altar society.

Survivors include four sons, Lewis McAtee, Ellsworth, Frank McAtee Jr., Carrollton, Mo., Patrick McAtee, Winfield, and Michael McAtee, New Castle, Ind.; 13 grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

Concepcion Tarin

Concepcion J. Tarin, 62, of 1602 Manning, Winfield, died Oct. 31, 2000, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

A Rosary will be said at 7 tonight at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Name Catholic Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home tonight until time for the Rosary.

A memorial has been established with Holy Name Catholic Church.

Wallace Wolf

SOUTH HAVEN - Wallace Wendell "Bud" Wolf, 86, of South Haven, died Nov. 2, 2000, at Sumner Regional Medical Center in Wellington.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Hope United Methodist Church near Geuda Springs. Pastor Greg Lindenberger will officiate. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery at Ashton.

Memorials have been established with the Shrine Plane of Mercy and Mount Hope United Methodist Church.

Friends may call at Frank Funeral Home in Wellington until 9 tonight.

Wolf was born Sept. 26, 1914, in Portland, to Amy (Fredickson) and Henry Wolf. On Aug. 4, 1940, he married Lulabel A. Gann.

A retired farmer and stockman, Wolf served as a Sumner County commissioner for 16 years.

Wolf was a member of Sumner Lodge 203 Ancient Free & Accepted Masons, Caldwell; Wichita Consistory of Midian Shrine; Winfield Elks Lodge and the Walnut Valley Old-Time Fiddlers, Pickers & Singers. He served in leadership positions in many agricultural organizations and in 4-H. He was also a member of Mount Hope United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Lulabel Wolf, South Haven; a daughter, Nancy Carter, Dallas; a son, Wallace Wolf Jr., The Dalles, Ore.; a brother, Henry Wolf Jr., Caldwell; three sisters, Harriett Coulter and Anna Mae Roseberry, both of Oxford, and Lois Jordan, Wichita; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
