Angela Ruiz

Angela Maria Ruiz, 19, of Winfield, died Nov. 1, 2000, following a motor vehicle accident.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Miles Funeral Service.

A memorial has been established with Eastridge. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Ruiz was born Oct. 5, 1981, in Escondido, Calif., to Dona Lin Cavanaugh and Jose Manuel Ruiz. She was raised in California until the age of 13. Then she moved to Winfield to live with her aunt and uncle, Bonnie and John Reyes.

Ruiz received her general equivalency diploma and attended classes for a semester at Cowley County Community College. She was employed at the Main Course as an assistant manager. She also worked part-time babysitting for Tammy Bradley and Kisti Jacoby.

Survivors include her fiance, Dal Lockwood, and his children, Bryce and Jayden Lockwood, all of Winfield; her mother, Dona Lin Cavanaugh, and her father, Manuel Ruiz, both of California; her sister, Brandee Ruiz, Winfield; her foster parents, Charles and Trudy Yingling, Winfield; and her grandparents, Shirlee Cavanaugh, John Cavanaugh, Jesus Ruiz and Solidad Ruiz.

Alan Archer

IOLA - Alan D. Archer, 58, of Iola, died Oct. 31, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

Services were at 1 p.m. Nov. 2 in Highland Cemetery in Iola. The Rev. Joe Ketcher officiated. Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Archer was born May 8, 1942, in Winfield, to Beryle E. (Oliver) and Clay W. Archer. He moved to Iola with his parents in 1951 and graduated from Iola High School in 1962.

He worked at odd jobs for numerous people.

Survivors include his uncles, Mace Archer and Dale Archer, and his aunts, Nadine Peck and Ruth Sparks, all of Winfield.

Vaughn Guthrie

WELLINGTON - Vaughn D. Guthrie, 65, of Wellington, a conductor for Burlington Northern/Santa Fe Railroad, died Nov. 3, 2000.

A celebration service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church. Watson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Carrie Guthrie, Wellington; two sons, Wesley Guthrie, Wichita, and Larry Guthrie, Glendale, Ariz.; a daughter, Linda Guthrie, Derby; and six grandchildren.

Memorials have been established with the Kansas Wildlife Federation and the Foundation for the Blind.

Blanche Harris

HOWARD - Blanche Evelyn Harris, 66, homemaker, of Howard, died Nov. 3, 2000, at Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville.

Services were at 1 p.m. Monday in Grace Lawn Cemetery. Pastor Robin Haines officiated. Lloyd G. Zimmerman sang "The Old Rugged Cross."

A memorial has been established with the Flint Hills Assembly of God. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home.

Harris was born Dec. 17, 1933, on a farm near Elk City, to Lucy (Smith) and Cleo Hughes. She attended school in the Elk City area.

On Jan. 31, 1954, she married Charles Leslie Harris in Howard. They made their home in Longton for several years before returning to the Howard community. After the death of her husband on March 23, 1989, she lived in Moline for a few years before returning to Howard.

Survivors include three sons, Fred Harris, Gary Harris and Steve Harris, and a daughter, Mary Holroyd, all of Howard.

Mattie Phillips

Services for Mattie N. Phillips were held at 2 p.m. Nov. 3, 2000, at the First Presbyterian Church. The Revs. Steve Souther and Diane Massey officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

The Rev. Earnest McClure gave a condolence and prayer. Arvenia Hughes gave condolences. Pat Crawford offered a tribute.

June Vasey was the organist. Special music included "God Will Take Care of You" and "His Grace and Mercy."

Honorary casket bearers were Bill Brooks, Jim Conrod, James Crawford, David Gorum, Ora Johnson, Luke Loud, George Lowe, Bill Sutton, Bill Tharp and Larry Whitney.

Casket bearers were Larry D. Griffie, Leslie M. Griffie, Vernon J. Jones, Yule Jones II, Larry McPherson and Tom Ozbun.

A memorial has been established with the First Presbyterian Church.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Michael Smith

Michael D. Smith, 42, of Route 4, Winfield, died Nov. 4, 2000, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

A college education fund has been established for Smith's children. Contributions may be made through Citizens Bank of Kansas, Home National Bank or Miles Funeral Service.

Smith was born Sept. 30, 1958, in Winfield, to Alice F. (Richards) and Paul Dean Smith. He was raised in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 1976. In 1978 he received an associate's degree in mechanics from Cowley County Community College.

As a youth he started working in agriculture, first for Stanley Graham and later for Carrol Wray Campbell. In 1982 he began employment with the Cowley County Road and Bridge Department and had recently completed 18 years of service.

On Sept. 5, 1986, he married April J. White in Miami, Okla. They lived and farmed in the Winfield community throughout their marriage.

Smith was active on the Walnut Township Board of Directors and had been affiliated for many years with 4-H and FFA.

Survivors include his wife, April Smith, three daughters, Courtney Smith, Cassie Smith and Chelsea Smith, and his parents, Paul D. and Alice F. Smith, all of Winfield; and four sisters, Karen Thompson, Apache Junction, Ariz., Deanna Schwartze, Kansas City, Kan., Paula Dillon, Wichita, and Judy Kraus, Winfield.

Conception Tarin

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for Conception J. Tarin at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 4, 2000, at Holy Name Catholic Church. The Rev. Bernard Gorges officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Music was by the Mariachi Azteca band of the Robert Chavez family of Wichita.

Casket bearers were Benny Swisher, Russell Leffew, LeRoy Giddens, Mario Suastegui, Frank Alvarado, John Reyes, James Elkins, Charles Velz, Octavio Carrasco, Carlos Carrasco, Juan Carrasco, Bobby Tarin, Edgar Tarin, Danielle Hovey, Betty Daniels and Roland Hovey.

A memorial has been established with Holy Name Catholic Church.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Clifford Wesbrook

SHELL KNOB, Mo. - Clifford Joe Wesbrook, 76, of Shell Knob, died Nov. 2, 2000, at his home.

Services were at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 6 at Williamson Funeral Home. The Rev. Corky Johnson officiated, and burial was in Lake Park Memorial Gardens. A flag presentation was made by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2203.

Wesbrook was born March 4, 1924, in Hooser, to Alice (Harness) and Sterling "Joe" Wesbrook. He was educated in Cedar Vale and helped harvest wheat and worked in a flour mill. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy.

On April 7, 1946, he married Dolores V. Gagnier in Yakima, Wash. For 13 years he resided in the Yakima Valley. He later lived in Kansas and Oklahoma. For several years he was an electrician for Cessna Aircraft in Wichita. In 1993 he moved to Shell Knob.

Wesbrook was a member of the First Christian Church and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2203.

Survivors include his wife, Dolores Wesbrook, Shell Knob; three sons, Kenneth Wesbrook, Richard Wesbrook and Scott Wesbrook, all of Arkansas City; three daughters, Susan Wheeler, Marshfield, Mo., Virginia Carlson, Ozark, Mo., and Margaret Wesbrook, Shell Knob; four sisters, Margaret Wesbrook and Aliene Bolton, both of Augusta, and Ruth Hestand and Ruby Stafford, both of Arkansas City; 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Mary, preceded him in death.

Lloyd Dowler

Lloyd A. Dowler, 90, of Winfield, died Nov. 4, 2000, at his home.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association.

Dowler was born Nov. 23, 1909, in Dexter, to Addie (Chambers) and W.W. Dowler. He was raised and educated in Cowley County.

On Dec. 12, 1933, he married Margaret Roberts. She died Nov. 11, 1982.

Dowler had been a farmer, a construction worker and a welder with Sonner Burner Co. He retired after working for Smith-Moon Co. During retirement he took farm-related jobs and worked part time for Bob Sherrard in construction until a few years ago.

Survivors include three daughters, Bonnie Gilmore, Arkansas City, Barbara Hopper, Oxford, and Betty Fish, Crystal, Minn.; two brothers, Roy Dowler, Arkansas City, and Fred Dowler, Wichita; five grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, 10 stepgreat-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
