Barbara Brumley

ARKANSAS CITY - Barbara Brumley, 63, of Arkansas City, died Nov. 9, 2000, at her home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Hawks Funeral Home. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 1 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 9 a.m. to noon.

A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Brumley was born May 25, 1937, in Ponca City, to Nettie Bell (Hudson) and Charles Walter Jackson. In 1947 the family moved to Arkansas City where Brumley attended public school. She later earned her General Equivalency Degree and graduated from Lawrence College with degrees in psychology and sociology. She then earned a degree in cosmetology.

In 1953 she married and divorced Donald Sitton.

She then married Garland Gamble who died in 1959.

She later married Arthur Jack Brumley in Bartlesville where they resided until he died in 1963. At that time she and her children moved to Arkansas City.

She attended Blessing Heights Church.

Survivors include eight children, Bea-Jay Brumley, Billy Brumley and Vicki Brumley, all of Arkansas City, Bobby Brumley, Winfield, Valerie Brooks, Joelton, Tenn., Dianna White, Overland Park, Richard Gamble, Wichita, and Charles Gamble, St. Louis; two brothers, Delbert Jackson, Arkansas City, and Melvin Jackson, Wellington; three sisters, Nick Pridmore, Fort Worth, Texas, Charlene Bailey, St. Joseph, Mo., and Goldie Pope, Arkansas City; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Doris Cummings

SEVERY - Doris Permelia Cummings, 84, of Severy, died Nov. 8, 2000, at Howard Twilight Manor.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Severy Church of the Nazarene. Pastor Terry Buchanan will officiate. Burial will be in South Lawn Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Severy Church of the Nazarene. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home.

Cummings was born July 10, 1916, in Howard, to Addie Pearl (Redmond) and Charles Eugene Templer. She attended Bunker Hill rural school and graduated from Howard High School in 1935.

On Oct. 15, 1941, she married John Marshall Cummings in Eureka. A homemaker, she was a lifetime resident of Elk and Greenwood counties.

Cummings was a member of the Union Center Homemakers, Elk County Extension Council and Severy Senior Center board and was chairwoman of the Farm Bureau board. She was also a member of the Severy Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include her husband, John Cummings, Severy; three sons, Kenneth Cummings, McPherson, Don Cummings, Emporia, and Allen Cummings, Howard; two daughters, Carolyn Hughes, California, Mo., and Rita Nienstedt, Fort Scott; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Robert Cook

Services for Robert G. Cook were held at 11 a.m. Nov. 10, 2000, in Tisdale Cemetery. The Rev. Ellie Foster officiated. Vocal music was "In the Garden."

Honorary casket bearers were Glynn Alexander, Delbert Graham, Philip Miller, Ralph Miller, Don Roberts, Joe Scholfield, Jim Smith and Raymond Wallace.

A memorial has been established with Tisdale United Methodist Church.

Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Ada Dunbar

Ada E. Dunbar, 82, of 1120 Lowry, Winfield, died Nov. 11, 2000, at Good Samaritan Village.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Union-Graham Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

A memorial has been established with First Christian Church. Contributions may be made through the church or funeral home.

Dunbar was born Feb. 24, 1918, in Winfield, to Matilda Frances (Williams) and Richard Hoyt Barnett. She was raised in Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 1935. She attended Southwestern College for two years and taught for a year at the Summit School near Wilmot.

On June 17, 1939, she married L. Leyton Dunbar. They made their first home in Winfield. They later lived in Vancouver, Wash., before returning to Winfield in 1945.

Dunbar was employed in the Cowley County Assessor's Office for many years. She also served as court-appointed conservator and guardian for many clients in Cowley County.

Her husband died Jan. 21, 1982.

A longtime member of First Christian Church, she was also a longtime affiliate of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a devoted worker and supporter of the Democratic Party and had served many years with local election boards.

Survivors include a son, Charles R. Dunbar, 1507 Manning, Winfield; a grandson and a great-granddaughter.

Charlie Ferguson

LONGTON - Charlie Gilliam Ferguson Jr., 51, of Longton, died Nov. 10, 2000, at the home of his caregiver, Robert Weaver, in Longton.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Community Christian Church. Pastor David Sanchez will officiate. Cremation has taken place.

A memorial has been established with the Community Christian Church. Contributions may be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Ferguson was born Nov. 18, 1948, in Potter County, Texas, to Betty Jane (Duvall) and Charlie Gilliam Ferguson.

He married Annette Marie Besherse in Helena, Mont. They later divorced.

Ferguson was a professional truck driver and lived in many locations in the United States during his lifetime.

Survivors include his sons, Michael and Scott Ferguson, both of Eureka, Calif.; his daughters, Misty Besherse, Eureka, Calif., and Amanda Walker, Apple Valley, Calif.; his mother, Betty Peterson, Nowata, Okla.; and two grandchildren.

Wayne Hatfield

HOWARD - Wayne Lamoine Hatfield, 82, of Howard, died Nov. 12, 2000, at Howard Twilight Manor.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Zimmerman Funeral Home. The Rev. Kibum Kim will officiate. Carter-Rader American Legion Post 149 will conduct military services in Grace Lawn Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with the Howard United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Hatfield was born Dec. 24, 1917, in Belle Plaine, to Lillie Mae (Cox) and George Milton Hatfield. He attended school in Belle Plaine and Wichita.

Hatfield was employed as circulation manager for the Wichita Beacon before joining the United States Army Air Corps on Aug. 23, 1943. He served with the Eighth Air Force in Europe during World War II and was honorably discharged on Dec. 6, 1945. After the war, he returned to work at the Wichita Beacon.

On Dec. 26, 1946, he married Joyce Denning in Wichita. This marriage later ended.

In 1958 Hatfield moved to California where he owned and operated an industrial catering business. He returned to Wichita in 1971 and continued his catering business until his retirement in 1979.

On Jan. 31, 1976, he married Anita (Winn) Frye in Moline. They lived in Wichita before moving to Elk County in 1980. They later lived in Howard.

Hatfield was a member of Carter-Rader American Legion Post 149, the Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a longtime member of the Howard United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Anita Hatfield, Howard; a son, Christopher Hatfield, Santa Cruz, Calif.; two daughters, Jill Pettingill, San Jose, Calif., and Cindy Olson, Santa Cruz, Calif.; four stepdaughters, Betty Lou Conner, Belleview, Wash., and Janet Landon, Genny Forcum and Myrna Clayton, all of Wichita; his brothers, George Hatfield Jr., Douglass, and Lawrence Hatfield, Wichita; 11 stepgrandchildren, 14 stepgreat-grandchildren and one stepgreat-great-grandchild.

A stepson, Terry Denning, preceded him in death.

Alma Williams

ARKANSAS CITY - Alma Williams, 85, of Arkansas City, died Nov. 11, 2000, at her home.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Newkirk cemetery.

Memorials have been established with the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association. Contributions may be made through Hawks Funeral Home.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Williams was born Jan. 31, 1915, in Fredricktown, Mo., to Ethel Mae (Boyer) and Acle Edward Hicks.

On March 14, 1934, she married Aulus Emery Williams in El Reno, Okla. They moved to Arkansas City in 1953. Mr. Williams died Oct. 30, 1981.

She married his brother, Wesley Ellis Williams, on Sept. 15, 1989, in Winfield. He died May 6, 1994.

Williams worked at Arkansas City Memorial Hospital as the dietary department supervisor for 26 1/2 years before retiring in 1980.

She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Winfield.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Earl Williams, Lampe, Mo., and A. Leon Williams, Arkansas City; three daughters, Mary Helen Wahlenmaier, Lakewood, Calif., and Frances Ruth Pappan and Peggy Sue Acosta, both of Arkansas City; four sisters, Sylvia Bates, Seal Beach, Calif., Esther Eason, Lakewood, Calif., Dora Hivey, Bakersfield, Calif., and Beulah Thompson, Tulare, Calif.; 14 grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, three stepgreat-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

A daughter, Georgia Mae Williams, and a stepdaughter, Janie Young, preceded her in death.

Phyllis Brown

ARKANSAS CITY - Phyllis E. Brown, 79, of Arkansas City, died Nov. 11, 2000, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the North Summit Church of Christ. The Rev. Wayne Robbins will officiate.

A memorial has been established with the American Diabetes Foundation. Contributions may be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

Brown was born Nov. 27, 1920, in Wellington, to Vera D. (McManis) and Roy E. Meyer. She graduated from Wellington High School in 1938.

On Nov. 11, 1939, she married Lawrence F. Brown. They lived in various cities, including Wichita and Pittsburg, before moving to Arkansas City in 1973.

Brown was a small-parts assembler at Cessna in Strother Field and also a cake decorator.

Her husband preceded her in death.

Survivors include two daughters, Saundra "Sandy" Quintero and Belle Evinger, both of Arkansas City; two sisters, Virginia White and Hazel McDaniel, both of Wichita; three brothers, Bob Meyer, California, Kenneth Meyer, Tucson, Ariz., and Jimmy Meyer, Wichita; four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
