Vida McConn

Services for Vida Marie McConn were held at 11 a.m. Nov. 16, 2000, in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. Deacon Tom Herlocker officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Kim Tapia sang "The Lord's Prayer." Jean Wooddell was the organist.

Casket bearers were Tony Kaufman, Jose Cornejo, Joey Gutierrez, Mike Gibbons, Tom Turner and Tom Sweeney.

Memorials have been established with Hospice Inc. and the Cancer Center of Kansas at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Melba Bechtel

ARKANSAS CITY - Melba LaVerne Bechtel, 77, of Arkansas City, died Nov. 18, 2000, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Riverview Cemetery. The Rev. Lance Carrithers will officiate.

A memorial has been established with the First United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

Bechtel was born Sept. 6, 1923, in Geuda Springs, to Girthia S. (Clift) and James B. Rutter. She was raised and educated in Geuda Springs and later attended Cowley County Community College and Southwestern College.

On Dec. 26, 1942, she married Harley F. Bechtel in Denver. The couple made their home in Arkansas City, Anthony and Dodge City before returning to Arkansas City in 1963.

Bechtel taught school in Ashton and Oak Grove schools and at Jefferson Elementary.

Survivors include her husband, Harley Bechtel, Arkansas City; a son, Dr. Randy Bechtel, Carl Junction, Mo.; a daughter, Lanna Austin, Arkansas City; a brother, Delbert Rutter, Arkansas City; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Ruby Callison

Ruby Florence Callison, 85, of 716 N. Tweed, Winfield, died Nov. 18, 2000, at William Newton Memorial Hospital.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Central Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

A memorial has been established with the Central Baptist Church Steeple Building Fund. Contributions may be made at the church or funeral home.

Callison was born Sept. 5, 1915, on a farm near Dexter, to Ida Florence (Sowers) and Elmer Ellsworth Daniel. She was raised in Dexter and graduated from Dexter High School in 1933. After high school, she worked as a clerk at McClellan's department store.

On June 20, 1937, she married Ernest H. Callison in Winfield. They lived in Winfield where she was a homemaker. In 1971, they moved to Edmond, Okla., and in 1978 they retired and moved to Wichita. In 1989, they returned to Winfield and resided at Cumbernauld Village. Her husband died Oct. 5, 1999.

Callison was a member of Central Baptist Church. While she attended First Baptist Church, she was involved in the Women's Mission Society and was superintendent of the Bible school. She was also a Cub Scout den mother. Bible school students in several churches knew her as the "Cookie Lady." Her crafts were marketed in Oklahoma City as "made by a little old lady from Kansas."

Survivors include three sons, Keith Callison, Wichita, Norman Callison, Winfield, and Daniel Callison, Bloomington, Ind.; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Arthur Green

ARKANSAS CITY - Arthur LeRoy Green, 72, of Arkansas City, died Nov. 18, 2000, at Medicalodge North Post Acute Care Center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Friends who wish may assist the family in the purchase of a grave marker. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Green was born Sept. 8, 1928, in Vega, Texas, to Nettie and Samuel E. Green. He was raised and educated in Vega and in California.

On April 15, 1949, he married Bessie Josephine Wilson in Avenal, Calif. They made their home in California before moving to Arkansas City in 1974.

Green worked for McCullough Tool Co. as an oil field worker while living in California. After moving to Arkansas City he worked for Stephenson Welding Co. until retiring in 1993.

He was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church.

His wife preceded him in death.

Survivors include a son, Jack Green, Russellville, Ark.; a daughter, Tamie Green, Arkansas City; three brothers, Ivan Green and Ronnie Green, both of Colorado, and George Green, California; three sisters, Erlene Spangler, Taft, Calif., and Doris Dengle and Becky Ray, both of Fresno, Calif.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Betty Martin

OXFORD - Betty L. Martin, 70, of Oxford, died Nov. 19, 2000, at her residence.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Miles Funeral Service. Cremation has taken place.

Memorials have been established with the First Christian Church of Winfield, Hospice Inc. and the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be made at the funeral home.

Martin was born Feb. 24, 1930, in Wichita, to Elsie Ellen (Evans) and Walter Anderson Willis. She was raised in Udall and graduated from Udall High School in 1948. She then worked for Dabler Insurance Co. in Wichita.

On March 15, 1954, she married Wheeler Eugene Martin at Braman, Okla., and they made their home in Udall. After the 1955 tornado, they moved to Wichita and lived there until 1969. While in Wichita, she worked for Security Abstract and Title as a legal secretary.

They moved to Belle Plaine in 1969 and in 1977 moved to a farm near Oxford. Later they moved into town. She held many part-time jobs but the last one was at Bagot Drugstore in Oxford. She retired in 1985.

Martin was a member of the First Christian Church in Winfield. At the church, she was past president and secretary of the Lydia Club and also involved in the Women's Fellowship. She was also a member of a PTA in Wichita; an Opti Mrs. and involved with Cicero Extension Homemaker Unit.

Survivors include her husband, Wheeler Martin, Oxford; her sons, Dwayne A. Martin, Mulvane, and Greg E. Martin, Belle Plaine; and two grandchildren.

Roberta Reed

ARKANSAS CITY - Alice Roberta Reed, 82, of Arkansas City, died Nov. 19, 2000, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Longwood Cemetery east of Ponca City. Pastor Jackie Crafton will officiate.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc. Contributions may be made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

Reed was born Jan. 31, 1918, in Kay County, Okla., to Evalyn I. (Meek) and Joe L. Gillespie. She was raised and educated in Kay County and lived around Ponca City.

On May 29, 1936, she married Arlie M. Reed. They lived in Blackwell before moving to Arkansas City in 1981. Her husband died in 1991.

Reed was a homemaker and attended the First Pentecostal Church in Arkansas City.

Survivors include two sons, Richard L. Reed, Arkansas City, and Kenneth L. Reed, Winfield; two daughters, Patricia A. Lyles, Blackwell, and Carol A. Payne, Ponca City; a sister, Juanita Baughman, Sperry, Okla.; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Mildred Vestal

CLYDE - Mildred Bell Vestal, 92, formerly of Longton, died Nov. 18, 2000, at Park Villa Care Home in Clyde.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church of Longton. Pastor Ted D. Davis will officiate. Burial will be in Longton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard.

Vestal was born Sept. 22, 1908, on a farm south of Longton to Ada May (Berry) and Lum D. Kimzey. She attended rural school at Cove and Pleasant Hill before attending Longton High School.

On July 8, 1929, she married Garrett Lester Vestal at Elk Falls. She was a partner with her husband in their farming operation south of Longton for 41 years. He died in 1978.

She recently moved to Clyde to be near her son.

Vestal was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Longton.

She is survived by a son, Harold Vestal, Clyde; a daughter, Betty Olmstead, Parsons; a stepson, George Vestal, and a brother, Ralph Kimzey, both of Independence; a foster sister, Ada Banning, Fredonia; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

A daughter, Lillian Dillinger, preceded her in death.

Carl Gene Wolfe

GRENOLA - Carl Gene Wolfe, 72, longtime resident of Grenola, died Nov. 17, 2000, of injuries in a horse accident southwest of Moline.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Grenola United Methodist Church. The Rev. Don Foster will officiate. Ferguson-Spease American Legion Post 388 will conduct military services in Greenlawn Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with the Grenola United Methodist Church and Ferguson-Spease American Legion Post of Moline. Contributions may be left at Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.

Wolfe was born Aug. 25, 1928, on a farm south of Grenola, to Fern Adeline (Wolfe) and Ray Bagsley. He attended school in the Grenola area and became a farmer at an early age. On Jan. 13, 1954, he entered the United States Army and served in Korea until his discharge on Nov. 22, 1955.

On July 15, 1960, he married Beverly Faye (Jordan) Hawley at Grenola, and they made their home in the Grenola community. Wolfe was a longtime farmer and rancher and was employed for many years at Boeing Aircraft Co. in Wichita. After retiring from Boeing, he continued operating his farm and working cattle.

He was a member of Ferguson-Spease American Legion Post, Kansas and Oklahoma Steam and Gas Engine Association and Grenola United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly Wolfe; his sons, Elmer Wolfe, Eugene Wolfe and John Wolfe, all of Grenola; his half-brothers, Wayne Scobee, Barstow, Calif., Wilbur Scobee, Wellington, and Walter Scobee, Carthage, Mo., and five grandchildren.

Margaret Seal

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Margaret K. "Peggy Seal, 90, of Kansas City, died Nov. 3, 2000, at Woodbine Nursing Home.

Services were held Nov. 6 in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Porter Funeral Home, Kansas City, Kan., was in charge of arrangements.

A memorial was established with Kansas City Hospice.

Seal was born Sept. 30, 1910, in Winfield. A supervisor in the garment industry, she retired in 1975.

Seal was a member of Victory Hills Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Jack Seal, Kansas City, Mo.; a son, Merlin Middleton, Kansas City, Kan.; a brother, George W. Duncan, Winfield; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
