Vivian Engelland
ARKANSAS CITY - Vivian Marie Engelland, 61, of Arkansas City, formerly of the Howard area, died Dec. 14, 2000, at Methodist Hospital in Houston.
A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard. The Rev. Lyle Bolen will officiate, and private burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with the Center for Basic Cancer Research at Kansas State University. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
Engelland was born March 25, 1939, near Howard, to Paul Harrah and Mildred Margaret (Matthew) Brown. She attended Elk County schools and graduated from Kansas State University in 1963 with a bachelor's degree in home economics.
On Sept. 1, 1963, she married Jack Engelland at Howard.
Engelland was employed as a social worker at Lyons for many years and also lived in Hutchinson and Wichita. She had been employed as a job placement director for the state in recent years.
In 1998, she moved to Arkansas City.
Survivors include a son, Jon Engelland, Branson, Mo.; a daughter, Amy Neisler, Denver; a brother, J.D. Brown, Peck; a sister, Maurine Smith, Burden; and one grandchild.
Virginia Nichols
Services for Virginia Marlene Nichols were held at 2 p.m. Dec. 20, 2000, at Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Rick Hathaway officiated.
Vocal music included "In the Garden" and "How Great Thou Art."
Burial was in Udall Cemetery.
Robert Heffley, Mike Kennedy, Doug Morrison and Jim, Tom and Mike Smith were casket bearers.
A memorial has been established with the Salvation Army.
Ella Smith
Ella Elizabeth Smith, 84, of 1500 E. 10th, Winfield, formerly of Lansing, Iowa, died Dec. 20, 2000, at her home after a long illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Lansing, Iowa. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery
in Lansing.
A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc. Contributions can be made through Miles Funeral Service.
Born Dec. 27, 1915, in Alma, Wis., she was a daughter of Thomas and Frances (Ward) Marum. She grew up in Lake City, Minn., and graduated from high school there.
She attended Red Wing Teachers College in Minnesota and Buffalo County Teachers College in Wisconsin and for several years taught in elementary schools.
Then she moved to Minneapolis, Minn., and worked for the Hennepin County Selective Service Board during the war and for Lever Brothers Co.
On March 16, 1946, she married Charles M. Smith in Minneapolis. They lived in Lansing, Iowa, and she worked at Kee High School and De Soto area schools.
Smith was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Lansing, and the church women's group. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and past president, secretary and treasurer of the library board.
Survivors include two sons, Scott Smith, Fairhaven, Mass., and Tim Smith, Winfield; two sisters, Mary Bielefeldt, Wichita, and Cary Marum, Minneapolis; and three grandchildren.
Her husband died in 1991.
Herbert Greeley
Services for Herbert J. Greeley were held at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 21, 2000, in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. The Rev. Shawn Sturm officiated, and "In the Garden" was the music.
Burial was in Highland Cemetery. Family members were casket bearers.
A memorial has been established with the Winfield Food Pantry.
Mabel Smith
BURDEN - Services for Mabel Smith were held at 2 p.m. Dec. 14, 2000, at Wheeler Funeral Home. The Rev. Stanley Upchurch officiated, and burial was in Burden Cemetery.
Vocalist was Jeleanne Osborn. Organist was Evelyn Upchurch.
Honorary casket bearers were Brandon Smith, Tate Osborn, Chris King, Chris Benest and Robert Smith Jr.
Casket bearers were Jimmy Osborn, Jimmy Hiatt, Mike Smith, Bobby Smith, Tyler Osborn and Tyson Osborn.
Memorials have been established with the Burden Fire Department and Hope Foundation at Cumbernauld Village.
Dorothea Smith
ARKANSAS CITY - Dorothea S. Smith, 77, of Arkansas City, died Dec. 19, 2000, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
Private inurnment will be in the International Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery
in Ponca City. Hawks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Smith was born Feb. 21, 1923, in Woodward, Okla., to Homer Dodge and Lena M. Ely Caine. She lived in the Ponca City area.
In 1960 she married Louis A. Smith. They lived on the East Coast before retiring and moving to Arkansas City.
Survivors include her husband, Louis Smith, Arkansas City; a son, Jim Asher, Coeur D'Alene, Idaho; and a brother, Homer Dodge Caine Jr., Oklahoma.
Kermit Sterns
BURDEN - Kermit I. Sterns, 61, of Burden, a retired law enforcement officer, died Dec. 21, 2000.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lakeview Funeral Home, 12100 E. 13th, Wichita.
Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Sterns, Burden; a son, Monty Wayne Sterns, Granite Falls, N.C.; a daughter, Rhonda Jayne Kent, Kansas City, Mo.; two stepsons, Gerald Wayne Lowe, Wichita, and Earl Lowe, Andover; two stepdaughters, Jeanie Davis and Peggy Jane Breaker, both of Andover; four grandchildren, 12 stepgrandchildren and eight stepgreat-grandchildren.
Joyce Burton
AUGUSTA - Joyce G. Burton, 67, of Augusta, a homemaker, died Dec. 21, 2000.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Hillside Funeral Home.
Survivors include two sons, Ronald Watson Jr., Irving, Texas, and James Watson, Winfield; two daughters, Sherry Jack, Winfield, and Zee Tovar, Augusta; six sisters, Betty Armel, Denton, Texas, Marie Patrick, Era, Texas, Hazel Caras, McKinney, Texas, Faye Etter, Gainesville, Texas, Edna Lauderback, Dennison, Texas, and Shirley Parson, Sherman, Texas; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Emma Anderson
PONCA CITY - Emma Faye Anderson, 81, a longtime Ponca City resident, died Dec. 22, 2000, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center.
Her service was to be at 2 p.m. today at First Freewill Baptist Church. Pastor David L. Bigger officiated, and burial was in Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel.
Born June 14, 1919, in Lyle, she was a daughter of John Morgan and Florence Nightingale (Hogan) Struble. She attended Glencoe, Okla., schools.
On Nov. 12, 1938, she married Kenneth "Andy" Anderson in Cushing, Okla. They moved to Ponca City in 1940. She was a homemaker.
Anderson attended First Freewill Baptist Church.
Her husband preceded her in death.
Survivors include three daughters, Wanda Gard and Carrol McKee, both of Ponca City, and Betty Hinkley, Winfield; 11 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Marie Crow
DEXTER - Services for M. Marie Adams Crow were held at 2 p.m. Dec. 23, 2000, at the First Christian Church. The Rev. Norman Reeves officiated, and he and Diane Reeves sang "In the Garden." Pat Muntz was the organist.
Interment was in Dexter Cemetery.
Honorary casket bearers were grandsons Phillip and Steven Spinks.
Casket bearers were grandsons James and Jeremy Crow, Jason Portenier, Joshua Shultz and Aaron and Matthew Spinks.
Memorials have been established with Dexter Christian Church, Grouse Valley Manor and the Dexter High School Scholarship Fund.
Miles Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Frances Lewis
Frances V. Lewis, 86, formerly of Burden, died Dec. 23, 2000, at Winfield Rest Haven.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Burden Cemetery.
Friends may call at Wheeler Funeral Home from 1 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Memorials have been established with Central Baptist Church and Winfield Rest Haven.
Lewis was baorn Aug. 12, 1914, in Burden, to William and Orpha (Gray) Gatton. She was raised and educated in Burden. After graduating from Pittsburg State University, she taught school for a year.
She married Melvin Lewis, and they owned and operated Lewis Chevrolet Garage in Burden. He preceded her in death.
Lewis moved to Winfield and worked as a bookkeeper at the General Motors dealership. She was a member of Central Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Daniel, Albuquerque, N.M., and four brothers, David Gatton, Burden, Asa Gatton, Buena Park, Calif., and Bill and Bud Gatton, St. Petersburg, Fla.
