Leonard Biddle

Leonard R. Biddle, 79, of 5 Roberts Court, Winfield, died Dec. 27, 2000, at his home following an extended illness.

His service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon to 9 p.m. Friday.

Memorials have been established with Hospice Inc., the Cancer Center of Kansas in Winfield and the First Baptist Church. Contributions can be made through the church or funeral home.

Biddle was born Feb. 28, 1921, in Winfield, to Jesse Amos and Ethel (Ramsey) Biddle. He grew up on a farm near Winfield and graduated from Winfield High School in 1940.

A veteran of World War II, Biddle served with the U.S. Army in Normandy and the Rhineland in the European Theatre.

On Feb. 1, 1948, he married Iris Rush, and they lived in Winfield.

Biddle worked for a company that laid telephone cable and then for the Winfield Co-op as a bulk agent and was self-employed as a television repairman. He was employed by General Electric as a mechanic from 1968 until retiring in 1985.

Biddle was a longtime member and deacon of the First Baptist Church. He was a member of Winfield Masonic Lodge 110, American Legion Post 10 and Order of the Eastern Star and had been a volunteer for Friendship Meals.

Survivors include his wife, Iris Biddle, and a son, Nathan Biddle, both of Winfield; three brothers, Lawrence and Raymond Biddle, both of Winfield, and Ralph Biddle, Tecumseh, Okla.; three sisters, Mabel Coon, Augusta, Lila Walsmith, Derby, and Shirley Rush, Winfield; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Thelma Brougher

HOWARD - Thelma Louise Brougher, 92, of Howard, died Dec. 27, 2000, in Greenwood County Hospital at Eureka.

Her service will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard with the Rev. Ted Smith officiating.

A memorial has been established with Howard Twilight Manor. Contributions can be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home.

Born May 3, 1908, near Piedmont, she was a daughter of Joseph Albert and Flossie (Smith) Hon. She attended rural schools in Greenwood County.

On Dec. 22, 1927, she married Fern Walter Brougher in Greenwood County. They lived on a farm northwest of Howard before moving to a farm northeast of Moline in 1953. They moved into Moline in 1975 and later lived in Howard for 10 years. The couple lived at Cottonwood Point Retirement Home in Augusta before moving to Howard Twilight Manor in April.

Brougher was a former member of the Jolly Janes Club in Howard.

Survivors include her husband, Fern Brougher, Howard; a son, Wayne Brougher, Eureka; two daughters, Betty Bolt, El Dorado, and Barbara Gaffney, Augusta; two brothers, Harold Hon, Neodesha, and Leland Hon, Chiloquin, Ore.; two sisters, Lucille Kerr and Lillie Belle Small, both of Sarasota, Fla.; and three grandchildren.

Tommy Johnson

Tommy Reed Johnson, 63, of 212 E. Fifth, Winfield, died Dec. 27, 2000, at William Newton Hospital.

Miles Funeral Service will announce arrangements.

Johnson was born Oct. 16, 1937, in Tahlequah, Okla., to Tom and Lena Johnson.

He served with the U.S. Air Force and resided in California, Springfield, Mo., and Anthony before moving to Winfield. He had been physically disabled for many years.

Survivors include a daughter, Terri Lynn Johnson, Anthony.

Wilma Jean Martin

ARKANSAS CITY - Wilma Jean Martin, 74, of Arkansas City, died Dec. 27, 2000, at Presbyterian Manor Health Care Center.

Her service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hawks Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Chambers officiating. A private burial will be in Parker Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until the service on Saturday.

Born Jan. 17, 1926, in Arkansas City, she was a daughter of Walter A. and Jennie A. (Ferguson) Sorenson. She graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1944 and later attended cosmetology school.

On March 21, 1950, she married Harold Lee Martin in Winfield, and they resided in Arkansas City. He died Oct. 22, 1993.

Martin was a beautician for 18 years and a longtime member of Central Christian Church.

Survivors include her sister, Ina Myers, Cheney; a sister-in-law, Dixie Sorenson, Choctaw, Okla.; a niece and two nephews.

Charles Turek

STANFORD, Ill. - Charles D. Turek, 89, of Stanford, died Dec. 24, 2000. He was a former businessman, volunteer and musician.

Among the survivors is a daughter, Ruth Ann Yeary, Winfield.

A memorial has been established with the Winfield Arts and Humanities Council.

Zora Turner

Services for Zora Turner were held at 10 a.m. Dec. 27, 2000, at Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Gerald Graber officiated, and vocal music included "Amazing Grace," "In the Garden," "Precious Memories" and "How Great Thou Art."

Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Casket bearers were Kenny Harpool, Alfred, Larry and Lorent Meritt and Jack and Jerry Venn.

A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society.

Earl Busby

LONGTON - Earl Tillman Busby, 71, died Dec. 27, 2000, at his home in Longton.

His service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Christian Community Church in Longton with Pastor Dave Sanchez officiating. Ferguson-Spease American Legion Post 388 of Moline will conduct military services in Longton Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with Ferguson-Spease American Legion Post 388 and the American Heart Association. Contributions can be made through Zimmerman Funeral Home.

Busby was born July 3, 1929, at Longton, to Benjamin Tillman and Alice Lee (Vollars) Busby. He graduated from Longton High School and served with the U.S. Army as a paratrooper during the Korean Conflict.

He was married and divorced twice.

Busby was employed as a firefighter in Wichita during the early 1950s and later worked for Boeing Aircraft Co. in Knob Noster, Mo. He was employed as a supervisor for Lear Jet in Wichita for several years before retiring and moving to Longton in the mid-1990s.

Busby was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1186, Independence, and Ferguson-Spease American Legion Post 388, Moline.

Survivors include four daughters, Marianne Madrigal, Houston, Julie Gordon, Dallas, and Susan Carnahan and Robyn Busby, both of Wichita; a brother, Robert Busby, Crane, Texas; a sister, Zona Harris, Lakin; and three grandchildren.

Lloyd Casebolt

Services for Lloyd Junior "Casey" Casebolt were held at 10 a.m. Dec. 28, 2000, at Miles Funeral Service. Joel Newton officiated.

Vocal music included "Silver Wings," performed by Merle Haggard; "Daddy's Hands," by Holly Dunn; and "Amazing Grace," by the Statler Brothers.

Burial was in Ozro Cemetery.

Honorary casket bearers were Jim Bowman, Farrell Edwards and Burl Loving.

Casket bearers were Justin Abraham, Dustin and Keith Casebolt, Rob Hayes and Robby and Tim Heinz.

A memorial has been established with Medicalodge of Douglass.

Florence Hedricks

ARKANSAS CITY - Florence Louise Kelly Hedricks, 79, of Arkansas City, died Dec. 27, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Joseph Campus in Wichita.

Her service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Hawks Funeral Home with Pastor Wayne Baker officiating. A private burial will be in Cedar Vale Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 this evening.

Born June 9, 1921, in Vinita, Okla., she was a daughter of Archie M. and Freda L. (Cassel) Leighty. She attended schools in Missouri.

She married Ralph Ewing and Joseph Morland before marrying Ernest C. Kelly on June 13, 1951, in Amarillo, Texas. They lived in Cedar Vale, Vinita and Newkirk before moving to Arkansas City in 1986. Her husband died March 11, 1993.

Survivors include three daughters, Gladys Tyler, Jean Ewing and Carolyn Thurman, all of Arkansas City; three stepsons, Ernest Kelly Jr., Carrollton, Mo., Virgil Kelly, North Kansas City, Mo., and John Kelly, Cameron, Mo.; three stepdaughters, Margaret Ellen Veach, Tina, Mo., Annabelle Gregg, Independence, and Ola Mae Russell, Blue Springs, Mo.; three brothers, Floyd Leighty, Tulsa, Fred Leighty, Guthrie Center, Iowa, and Robert Leighty, Oklahoma City; a sister, Lois Boothe, Stanford, Texas; eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

Frances Lewis

BURDEN - Services for Frances V. Lewis were held at 2 p.m. Dec. 28, 2000, in Burden Cemetery. The Rev. Art Hays officiated.

Memorials have been established with Central Baptist Church and Winfield Rest Haven.

Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
