Maxine McCollum

HOWARD - Golda Anetta Maxine McCollum, 77, of Howard, died Jan. 10, 2001, at Mercy Hospital in Independence.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Zimmerman Funeral Home. Pastor Robin Haines will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery at Eureka.

Memorials have been established with the Flint Hills Assembly of God and Elk County Health Department. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

McCollum was born Jan. 17, 1923, in Hutchinson, to Jesse and Esther Merinda (Carlson) James. At an early age she moved with her family to Wichita and graduated from Wichita East High School in 1941.

On June 18, 1947, she married Grover Earl McCollum in Wichita. They made their home in Wichita until moving to a farm north of Fall River. After her husband's death in 1976, she moved to El Dorado where she remained until moving to Howard in 1991.

A homemaker, she was a member of the Flint Hills Assembly of God.

Survivors include six daughters, Marie Pepper and Cindy Lewis, both of Leon, Fran Sprague, El Dorado, Judy Wiseman and Peggy Criger, both of Howard, and Bobby Richmond, Marion; a brother, Herbert Lee James, Hartford, Vt.; 15 grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and six stepgreat-grandchildren.

Joann Morton

ARKANSAS CITY - Joann Morton, 55, of Arkansas City, died Jan. 13, 2001, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Pastor Tim Milby will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery at Winfield.

A memorial has been established with the American Diabetes Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Morton was born Feb. 14, 1945, in Athens, Tenn., to Lucille (Collins) and Valmond Beech. She moved to Arkansas City from Claremore, Okla., in 1978. She was employed at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center from 1987 until its closing and recently with Presbyterian Manor.

On April 13, 1989, she married Howard Morton Jr. in Arkansas City. They made their home in rural Arkansas City.

Survivors include her husband, Howard Morton, Arkansas City; four sons, J.K. "Jody" Dentmon Jr., Germany, Howard Morton III and Jeff Morton, both of Belle Plaine, and Heath Morton, Concordia; four daughters, Patty, Washington, Cindy White, Niota, Tenn., Leslie Hall, Winfield, and Monica Kahki, Marietta, Ga.; three brothers, Bob Beech, Greenback, Tenn., Valmond Beech Jr., Los Angeles, and Tommy Beech, Trion, Ga., a sister, Gail Blackmon, Summerville, Ga.; and 15 grandchildren.

Verena Heyman

EL DORADO - Verena R. "Rena" Heyman, 73, of El Dorado, died Jan. 14, 2001, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Carlson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery at Winfield.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society through Carlson Funeral Home.

Heyman was born July 28, 1927, in Oklahoma, to Bertha Verena (Speer) and William Ross Weger. She formerly owned the Potwin Cafe and also worked as a presser for Best Cleaners. She had made her home in El Dorado for many years.

On Jan. 28, 1951, she married Guy Heyman in Las Vegas. He died June 30, 2000.

Survivors include a son, William H. Heyman, Hutchinson; a sister, Loretta B. Weller, Winfield; and a grandson she raised, Willliam C. Heyman, El Dorado.

Helen Neff

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Helen Maye Neff, 83, of Fort Collins, died Jan. 13, 2001, at a local nursing home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Grandview Cemetery at Fort Collins. Bohlender Funeral Chapel in Fort Collins is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Neff was born Oct. 14, 1917, in El Dorado, to Mertie (Wilcox) and Arlie Redburn.

She married Sterling Charles "Buck" Neff Nov. 22, 1947, in Dodge City. They moved from Dodge City to Boulder, Colo., in 1958; from Boulder to Cambridge in 1979, and from Kansas to Fort Collins in 1997. Her husband died June 2, 1997.

A homemaker, Neff was a member of the Methodist Church and had been a Girl Scout leader.

Survivors include two daughters, Lowella Maye Fencl, Fort Collins, and Tonya Lavell, Elkton, Ohio; four brothers, Alfred, Melvin and Howard Redburn, all of Wichita, and Walter Redburn, Dodge City; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Chester Payne

Chester D. Payne, 79, of Winfield, died Jan. 14, 2001, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Prairie Lawn Cemetery at Wellington. The Rev. Jerre Nolte and Pastor Doris Schlessman will officiate.

Friends may call at Day Funeral Home until 9 Tuesday and from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday. The family will greet friends from 7 to 8:30 today at the funeral home.

A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society, 400 N. Broadway, Wichita, KS 67202. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Payne was born Sept. 6, 1921, in Broken Arrow, Okla., to Grace Lee (Berry) and Chester Herman Payne. He grew up in Wellington and graduated from Wellington High School in 1939.

On Dec. 8, 1939, he and Billie Lee Roth were married in Winfield. They lived in Wellington where he worked for 35 years as a Santa Fe Railroad engineer. After retirement, he and his wife moved to Anderson, Mo., where they lived for 22 years before moving to Winfield in 1997.

Survivors include his wife, Billie Payne, Winfield; four sons, Mike Payne, Coldspring, Texas, Pat Wayne, Wichita, Tim Payne, Winfield, and Jeff Payne, Overbrook; two daughters, Lana Glaysher, Bentonville, Ark., and Deanna Fuller, Winfield; a sister, Betty Raithel, Wichita; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Douglas Hunter

ARKANSAS CITY - Family services for Douglas Larry Hunter were held at 4 p.m. Jan. 10, 2001, at Hawks Funeral Home. The Rev. Tom Davis, Hospice chaplain, officiated.

Music included "From a Distance," by Bette Midler, "Go Rest High on That Mountain," by Vince Gill, "The Love Theme," by St. Elmo's Fire, and "What a Wonderful World," by DiBlasio.

A public service was held at 4 p.m. Jan. 12 at the Brown Center of Cowley County Community College. Sid Regnier and Robert Burton delivered the eulogy.

Music included "In a Godda Da Vida," by Iron Butterfly; the James Bond theme, by the Art of Noise; and "Choose Something like a Star," by Doug Judd.

A faculty rock band, made up of Gary Gackstatter, Steve Butler, Chris Mayer and David Bostwick, also performed.

Honorary casket bearers were Mike Holland, Robert Jordan Jr., Willie Hall, Tom Majher, Robert Burton, Sid Regnier, Bobbie Alexander, Greg Turner, Jack McVey and Doug Judd.

An honor detail from Fort Riley provided military honors.

Evelyn Combs

Evelyn M. Combs, 88, of 1320 Wheat Road, a Winfield resident for nearly 70 years, died Jan. 15, 2001, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Burden Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. to service time Friday.

A memorial has been established with the First Presbyterian Church. Contributions may be made through the church or funeral home.

Combs was born May 3, 1912, at Erwin, S.D., to Alma E. (Bouchie) and Charles W. Parsons. She was raised in South Dakota and graduated from Watertown High School.

On Aug. 12, 1931, she married Raymond O. Combs in Yankton, S.D. They moved to Winfield in 1932.

She was employed as a pharmacy assistant at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center for 16 years before her retirement in 1972.

Her husband died July 2, 1976.

Combs resided at Walnut Towers before moving to Good Samaritan Village.

A member of First Presbyterian Church, she was also affiliated with the Winfield Elks Lodge Ladies Auxiliary and Pythian Sisters, Wellington Temple Chapter.

Survivors include a son, Glenn R. Combs, Branson, Mo.; a daughter, Linda L. Cook, Wichita; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Ellen Myers

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. - Ellen Mae Myers, 78, of University Place, formerly of Howard, died Jan. 3, 2001, at her home.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Zimmerman Funeral Home in Howard. The Rev. Dale Cornett will officiate. Sharon Hughes will be the pianist, and Barbara Greenwood will sing "Amazing Grace" and "The Old Rugged Cross." Private burial will be in Altoona Cemetery.

A memorial has been established with Hospice of Tacoma, P.O. Box 5296, Tacoma, WA 98415. Contributions may be left with the funeral home.

Myers was born Sept. 21, 1922, in Coffeyville, to Hazel Ellen (Blaker) and Earl Martin Brewer. She graduated from high school in the Coffeyville area.

On July 19, 1946, she married Eugene Taylor Myers in Wichita. They lived in Wichita, El Dorado and Winfield before moving to Howard in 1976. Her husband died Oct. 19, 1997.

Myers lived near a daughter in Montclair, Va., before moving to University Place.

A homemaker, she was employed as a cook for many years. She was a past member of the Carter Rader Post 149 American Legion Auxiliary and a member of the First Baptist Church of Howard.

Survivors include two daughters, Melissa Anderson, Winfield, and Earline Smith, University Place, Wash.; a brother, Dee Brewer, Union City, Calif.; a sister, Jean Bradley, Santa Clarita, Calif.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
