Bruce Hollingsworth

ARKANSAS CITY - Bruce D. Hollingsworth Sr., 72, of Arkansas City, died Feb. 8, 2001, at Medicalodge North Post Acute Center in Arkansas City.

Cremation has taken place. Private services will be held. Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Hollingsworth was born May 9, 1928, in Arkansas City, to Norma (Owens) and Jesse Hollingsworth. He graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1946.

After serving with the U.S. Air Force for three years, he joined the U.S. Army and served for 20 years across the world.

On March 23, 1957, he married Evelyn E. Stoney in Sitka, Alaska.

He was a member of the American Legion.

Survivors include a son, Bruce Hollingsworth Jr., Winfield; five daughters, Jessica Hollingsworth, Janice Hollingsworth and Sharon Marquez, all of Arkansas City, Kim Chattin, Wellington, and Norma Hollingsworth, Portland, Ore.; two brothers, Jesse Hollingsworth, Wichita, and Richard Hollingsworth, Arkansas; two sisters, Nyla June Weiss, Wichita, and Virginia Hollingsworth, Las Vegas; 20 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

His wife and two daughters, Virginia Hollingsworth and Mona Hollingsworth, preceded him in death.

Evelyn Burdick

DISNEY, Okla. - Evelyn Dean Burdick, 72, of Disney, formerly of Dexter, died Feb. 8, 2001, after a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Dexter Cemetery. Pastor Jim Bible will officiate.

Friends may call at Turner Funeral Chapel in Langley, Okla., through Sunday.

The family has requested memorial contributions be sent to the Cancer Center of Kansas at William Newton Hospital.

Burdick was born March 17, 1928, in Anthony, to Alice (Smith) and Ernie W. Meeks. She attended school in Union Ridge.

On June 21, 1947, she married Clifford Burdick in Winfield. They resided in Dexter where she owned and operated the Hometown Cafe'. A homemaker, she was also employed by Binney & Smith in Winfield during the 1970s and worked for a time for the Maple City school.

Burdick was a 50-year member of Chapter 6, Order of Eastern Star, and a member of the Dexter Christian Church.

The Burdicks moved to Disney in 1996.

She is survived by her husband, Clifford Burdick, Disney; three daughters, Sharian Shelton, Jay, Okla., Vonnie Bible, McLean, Texas, and Janet Tinch, Elcot, Colo.; nine sisters, two brothers, nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Benita Shields

BELLA VISTA, Ark. - Benita Mossman Shields, 92, of Bella Vista, formerly of Winfield, died Feb. 8, 2001, in the Concordia Care Center.

Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home from 8 to 11 a.m. Monday. Private burial services will follow in Highland Cemetery.

Shields was born March 31, 1908, in Winfield, to Zoa (Foster) and Dr. Frank E. Mossman.

She graduated from Morningside College, Sioux City, Iowa, in 1928 and was granted a Master of Arts degree in concert violin and musicology from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., in 1934.

She taught music in public schools in Kansas and Oklahoma and at Morningside College.

During World War II she served in the American Red Cross as program planner and director in Ceylon and Agra, India.

Following the war, she married Frederick Shields of Spokane, Wash. The marriage ended in divorce.

For many years Shields was associated with Columbia Artists and Civic Music in New York City and traveled to New England and Canada. After retiring she moved to Greensboro, N.C., and in 1994 moved to Bella Vista.

Survivors include a brother, Dr. Frank H. Mossman, Upland, Calif.; three nieces and two great nieces.

Alfred Brown

ARKANSAS CITY - Alfred R. Brown Jr., 81 of Arkansas City, died Feb. 9, 2001, at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in Cambridge Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from noon to 9 p.m. Monday. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 Monday evening.

A memorial has been established with the Oxford High School Industrial Arts Program. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Brown was born May 20, 1919, in Winfield, to Annabel (Higgins) and Alfred R. Brown. He was raised in Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1938.

After graduation he went to California and worked in construction. He was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1942. He served with both the Eighth and Ninth Armored Tank Divisions in Europe and was a veteran of the Battle of the Bulge. He was honorably discharged in November 1944.

On May 27, 1944, he married Marion E. Warren of Fort Scott in DeRitter, La.

After Brown's discharge, he worked at several jobs before beginning his college education. He graduated from Fort Scott Junior College in 1949 and from Southwestern College in 1951 with a bachelor of arts degree in education. While in college, he played baseball and later played semi-professional baseball as well.

A career educator, he taught 32 years in Lost Springs, Dexter and Oxford. Most of his teaching career was in coaching and industrial arts where his students received many awards for their wood projects.

After retiring, he and his wife moved to Bartlesville to be near their children. In 1998 they returned to Arkansas City.

Survivors include his wife, Marion Brown, Arkansas City; two daughters, Margie Brookshire, Bartlesville, and Janice Sims, Arkansas City; a son Robert Brown, Bartlesville; two sisters, Barbara Ledgerwood, Durango, Colo., and MaryLou Ashcraft, Burden; a brother, Lynn Brown, Overland Park; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Benny Gray

Benny Paul Gray, 65, of 1316 Menor, Winfield, died Feb. 7, 2001, at his home.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Maple City Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to service time.

Memorials have been established with the American Diabetes Association and the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Gray was born Jan. 11, 1936, in Maple City, to Audine (Brown) and Dean Lewis Gray. When he was six, the family moved to Howard where they lived on a farm. He graduated from Howard High School.

After high school he worked for other farmers and ranchers. Later he moved to Winfield. He went to work at Cessna Aircraft and retired after 32 years of service in 1998. When his parents moved to Winfield, he devoted his time to caring for them.

Survivors include three brothers, Roy Dean Gray, Hominy, Okla., Willis Gray, Augusta, and Eddie Gray, Osage, Okla.; five sisters, Ruby Cook, Cleveland, Okla., Betty Jo Callahan and Rosemary Floyd, both of Liberal, Barbara Burrell, Wichita, and Patricia Proctor, Hominy, Okla.

Adron Shockey

Adron V. Shockey, 79, of 321 W. 11th, Winfield, died Feb. 8, 2001, at William Newton Hospital.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Miles Funeral Service. Military rites will follow in Oxford Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Memorials have been established with the American Lung Association and the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Shockey was born Nov. 27, 1921, in Oxford, to Bessie K. (Overley) and Stanley L. Shockey. The family moved to Winfield when he was two. He graduated from Winfield High School in 1940 and attended Southwestern College.

On Oct. 5, 1941, he married Christina Abildgaard at the First United Methodist Church in Winfield. They made their home in Winfield.

On Nov. 27, 1942, he entered the United States Army Air Corps as a second lieutenant. He was a pilot. On Sept. 19, 1945, he was honorably discharged to the Air Corps Reserves and was again discharged Aug. 15, 1954.

After World War II, he returned to Winfield and farmed for 10 years. He later worked for Winfield State Hospital & Training Center as the farm and dairy supervisor. After that division was sold, he worked as grounds maintenance supervisor until his retirement in April 1984.

Shockey was a member of the First United Methodist Church and American Legion Post 110.

Survivors include his wife, Christina A. Shockey, Winfield; two sons, Stuart A. Shockey, Houston, Texas, and Loren D. Shockey, Salina; a daughter, Kaellen D. Mirth, Houston; a brother, Winfred Shockey, Winfield; three sisters, Dr. V. Mae Leopold, Odessa, Mo., Savinha Harpending, Camarillo, Calif., and Loretta Louise Ralph, Ventura, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

Mark Williams

ATLANTA - Mark Williams, 36, of Atlanta, died Feb. 7, 2001, at his home.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Littleton Cemetery near Mulvane.

Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday.

A memorial has been established with the American Heart Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Williams was born Sept. 20, 1964, in Winfield, to Velma Loreena (Keahey) and Ramon David Williams. He attended grade school in the Atlanta and Cambridge areas. In 1984 he graduated from Central of Burden High School and attended Cowley County Community College for a short time. After college he worked at Wal-Mart in Winfield.

He served in the United States Army a short time before being honorably discharged to the Reserves.

Williams returned to his family and was part of a custom harvesting crew that worked from Kansas to Colorado to Wyoming. He then worked for Rubbermaid and later for the Cowley County Highway Department in Burden. At the time of his death, he was employed at Future Beef in Arkansas City.

He was a member of the Kansas-Oklahoma Gas & Steam Engine Club and raised Longhorn cattle.

Survivors include his parents, Ramon and Velma Williams, Atlanta; three sisters, Deborah Williams, Sandra Williams, and Cheryl Williams; and a brother, Royce Williams, all of Arkansas City.
