Lura Hall

HOWARD - Lura Diantha Hall, 106, longtime resident of Howard, died Feb. 14, 2001, at Howard Twilight Manor.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Grace Lawn Cemetery. Pastor Tony Pameticky will officiate.

A memorial has been established with the Howard Senior Center. Contributions may be left at Zimmerman Funeral Home.

Hall was born April 12, 1894, in Kingman County, to Emma Belle (Flood) and John Andrew McAllister. She attended school near Spivey.

On Sept. 29, 1915, she married Kenneth Columbus "K.C." Hall in Wichita. She was a homemaker and was employed at Beech Aircraft during World War II. In 1946 the family moved to Elk County where they owned and operated a ranch west of Howard. In the early 1980s, she and her husband moved into Howard. He died Nov. 3, 1983.

Hall was a member of the First Congregational Church while living in Wichita and a longtime member of the former Presbyterian Church of Howard.

Survivors include three sons, Hugh Hall, Sarona, Wis., Phil Hall, Longmont, Colo., and Don Hall, Howard; two daughters, Gertrude Lindig, Fort Morgan, Colo., and Margaret Roberson, Chattanooga, Tenn.; three sisters, Allie Friend, Wichita, Lillian Washburn, Cleveland, Okla., and Kittie Rustenbach, Ponca City; 16 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Lois Rogers

HOWARD - Lois Nadine Rogers, 77, formerly of Phillipsburg, died Feb. 13, 2001, at Howard Twilight Manor.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Fairview Cemetery at Phillipsburg. Pastor Joel Hiesterman will officiate.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc. of Wichita. Contributions may be left at Zimmerman Funeral Home.

Rogers was born Oct. 31, 1923, near Phillipsburg, to Zora (Loughery) and Francis William Jacobs. She graduated from Phillipsburg High School in 1941.

On March 11, 1945, she married Dale Robert Rogers in Phillipsburg. In 1948 they moved to a farm in eastern Colorado but returned to Phillips County in 1950.

A farm wife, Rogers devoted her life to caring for her family. She and her husband retired from farming in 1991. He died Feb. 27, 1998, and she moved to Howard in March of that year to be near her son and his family.

She was a former member of the Order of Eastern Star and served many years as a Cub Scout leader. She was a longtime member of the First Christian Church of Phillipsburg.

Survivors include two sons, Rod Rogers, Howard, and Rich Rogers, Bennington; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

David Hutchins

Services for David R. Hutchins were held at 2 p.m. Feb. 14, 2001, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Stanley Upchurch officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Special music was "Never Say Die," by the Dixie Chicks.

Casket bearers were Justin Burgell, Steve Ellsworth, Cory Grove, Ron Redenius, Brian Shew and Mark Simpson.

Elvin Phipps

BELLE PLAINE - Elvin Ray Phipps, 67, of Belle Plaine, died Feb. 15, 2001, at his home.

A retired high school biology teacher, he taught in El Dorado for 17 years and in Wellington for 18 years.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc. Contributions can be left at Oliver-Hawks Funeral Home of Oxford, which will announce arrangements.

Natalia Lara

WEBB CITY, Okla. - Natalia Cabrera Lara, 72, of Webb City, died Feb. 14, 2001, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

A prayer service will be held at 7 tonight in Grace Memorial Chapel of Ponca City. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Shidler, Okla. The Rev. Leonard Higgins will preside. Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery in Ponca City.

Lara was born Dec. 29, 1928, in Mexico, to Vidal and Emilia (Aguilar) Cabrera. She lived in Ponca City for several years and was employed as a nurse at Grandview Hospital for 10 years.

On June 28, 1975, she married John Rafael Lara in Escondido, Calif. There she was employed in the electronics division of the Asterguard Co. prior to moving to Webb City in 1991.

She was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband, John Lara, Webb City; a son, John Lupe Reyes, Winfield; a daughter, Loretta Reyes, Ponca City; a stepson, John Lara Jr.; five stepdaughters, Mary Lou, Dora, Barbara, Janet and Susan; four brothers, Antonio, John, Juan and Matias Cabrera; 11 sisters, Bernadine Torres, Matilda Vasquez, Inez Smith, Pauline Cruz, Julie Goldsmith, Josepha Cabrera, Josephine Walters, Petra Groover, Dorothy Cheeks, Marlene Beams and Anita Ornales; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A son, Benito, preceded her in death.

Elvin Phipps

BELLE PLAINE - Elvin Ray Phipps, 67, Belle Plaine, died Feb. 15, 2001, at his home.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Oxford Christian Church. The Rev. Danny Ginn will officiate. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery.

Friends may call at Oliver-Hawks Funeral Home from 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Phipps was born Dec. 2, 1933, in Wellington, to Ethel Mae (Carson) and Merle Clark Phipps. When he was nine years old, the family moved to a farm near Belle Plaine. He graduated from Oxford High School in 1951 and from Ottawa University in 1957 with a teaching degree in biology.

Following graduation he taught in Manhattan, then moved to Wellington where he taught three years in the high school. He attended Emporia State College for a year, then taught high school biology in El Dorado for 17 years. In 1980 he returned to Wellington and taught 15 years of high school biology until he retired in 1995.

On Jan. 30, 1955, Phipps married Marian Gant in Eureka. They lived on his family's farm from 1970 until his death.

He was a member of the Wellington Teachers association and the National Education Association.

Survivors include his wife, Marian Phipps, Belle Plaine; two sons, Merle "Ed" Phipps, Oxford, and Mark Phipps, Independence, Mo.; three daughters, Doris O'Rourke, Fayetteville, Ga., Wanda Gordon, Woodland Park, Colo., and Marsha Salerno, Wichita; two sisters, Eva Christine Cain, Arkansas City, and Carolyn Davis, Oxford; and nine grandchildren.

Adrian Horton

POTSDAM, N.Y. - Adrian C. Horton, 72, of Potsdam, died Feb. 15, 2001, at Canton-Potsdam Hospital.

A memorial service will be held in Potsdam at Garner Funeral Home in the spring. Burial will be in Bayside Cemetery, Potsdam.

Horton was born Oct. 7, 1928, in Sackets Harbor, N.Y., the son of Charles Guy and Charlotte Hayes Horton. He attended Sackets Harbor Schools. In 1946, he left school and entered the United States Marine Corps and served his country until 1949. He was honorably discharged and returned to Sackets Harbor High School, graduating in 1951.

On August 12, 1951, he Married Eileen M. Walker in Sackets Harbor. After their marriage, Horton took an apprenticeship at the New York Air Brake in Watertown, N.Y. He remained there as a journeyman machinist until 1958, when he moved to Beaver Falls, N.Y. , where he worked for Beaverite. He remained there until moving to Pottsdam in 1963, when he became an employee at the Nekoosa-Edwards Paper Mill in Unionville, N.Y. He remained there until 1966 when he went to work for the General Motors Corporation in Massena, N.Y., where he was a tool and dye machinist until retiring in 1987.

He was a past president and vice president of the Seacom Federal Credit Union and a member of the United Auto Workers Association.

Survivors include his wife, Eileen Horton, Potsdam; a son, Darryl P. Horton, Winfield; a daughter, Dianne Bustamante, San Juan Capistrano, Calif., and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother Robert Horton and sister Roberta Bishop.

Betty Cline

WICHITA - Betty Jane Cline, 81, of Wichita, former longtime resident of Winfield, died Feb. 18, 2001, at Wesley Medical Center.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

A memorial has been established with Victory in the Valley in Wichita. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Cline was born July 29, 1919, in Winfield, to Bretta (Breitweg) and Stanley Rutter. She was raised and educated in Winfield.

In June 1938 she married Walter G. Cline in Wichita, and they made their home in Winfield. He died in November 1979.

Cline was employed for many years in the dietary department at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center. She retired in 1975 due to failing health.

Cline had resided in Wichita since 1990.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Winfield.

Survivors include a daughter, Pat McDaniel, Wichita; a granddaughter and a great-grandson.

Coleitto Taylor

Coleitto Thelma Taylor, 89, of, 1523 E. 13th, Winfield, died Feb. 16, 2001, at her home.

Services will be at 2 p.m Tuesday at Miles Funeral Service. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery north of Arkansas City.

Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 tonight and until service time Tuesday.

Memorials have been established with the American Arthritis Foundation and the First United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the church or funeral home.

Taylor was born Nov. 7, 1911, on a farm near Maple City, to Nellie (Awalt) and Charles Foster. She was raised in the Arkansas City and Winfield areas and attended Rose Valley rural school east of Winfield. She later lived in the New Salem area.

On Feb. 3, 1938, she married Alfred E. Taylor in Pittsburg.

The Taylors lived and worked on a farm northwest of Winfield in the Udall area for over 35 years. She was also employed in laundry service at Winfield State Hospital and Training Center for over 20 years. Following her retirement, the couple moved to Winfield in 1978.

Taylor was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was formerly affiliated with the Oxford United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Alfred Taylor, Winfield; three sons, Edward Taylor, Todd, N.C., and Gaylord Taylor and Loren Taylor, both of Wichita; two daughters, Thelma Wallace, Winfield, and Joyce Grieve, Udall; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
