Carl Cowen

CEDAR VALE - Carl Day Cowen, 90, of Cedar Vale, died Feb. 19, 2001, at the Cedar Vale hospital.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Cesko Czech Cemetery near Caldwell.

Friends may call at Wheeler Funeral Home until 7 tonight.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Inc.

Cowen was born Sept. 27, 1910, in Joplin, Mo., to Carrie Estella (Day) and Thadeous Carlie Cowen. He was raised and educated in the Joplin area and moved to the Cedar Vale area in the 1930s.

He was a farmer-stockman and also managed the Round Mound and Cedar Vale cemeteries.

On Nov. 17, 1940, he married Alice Mae Hybsha in Sedan. She died Aug. 23, 1993.

Survivors include a brother, Thomas Cowen, Joplin, Mo.; and three sisters, Louise Parker, Blackwell, Marguerite Peoples, Lyons, Colo., and Ethel Mae Crane, Missoula, Mont.

Lucille Potter

Lucille Eudaley Potter, 91, formerly of 1820 E. 15th, Winfield, died Feb. 17, 2001, at Winfield Rest Haven.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Memorial Park Cemetery, Edmond, Okla.

Friends may call at Miles Funeral Service until 9 tonight.

Memorials have been established with the Maude Carpenter Children's Center in Wichita and the Winfield Church of Christ. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Potter was born June 14, 1909, in Coolidge, Texas, to Luella (Goolsby) and William A. Carley. She was educated in Texas public schools and later attended Westminster Junior College and Abilene (Texas) Christian College where she received her teacher certification.

During the 1930s she taught in public schools in Texas.

She married James Richard Eudaley, and they resided in San Jose', Calif., throughout their marriage. He died July 11, 1962.

On May 1, 1968, she married Earl E. Potter in Wichita, and they resided in Winfield. He died Jan. 17, 1987.

Potter had resided at Winfield Rest Haven since 1987.

A homemaker, she was a member of the Winfield Church of Christ and a past worthy matron of the Order of Eastern Star in San Jose'. She was a life member of Queen City Chapter 138 Order of Eastern Star in Winfield and had been a volunteer for the William Newton Hospital Auxiliary and Winfield Rest Haven.

Survivors include a daughter, Erla K. Mueller, Kingman; seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Marcia Douglass, preceded her in death.

Steven Hardman

ARKANSAS CITY - Steven W. Hardman, 51, of Arkansas City, died Feb. 19, 2001, at Medicalodge East.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Cremation has been effected.

A memorial has been established with Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Hardman was born April 24, 1949, in Arkansas City, to Nila (Matthews) and Melvin Hardman. He graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1967 and received a bachelor's degree in business administration from Northwestern Oklahoma State University. In the 1980s he worked at Medicalodge East as an assistant administrator.

Survivors include a son, Kraig Wigley, Arkansas City; a daughter, Shannon Wendt, Geuda Springs; a brother, Jerry Hardman, Arkansas City; a sister, Maureen Boyd, Roanoke, Va.; five granddaughters and one great-granddaughter.

Peg Young

Zelma "Peg" Young, 88, formerly of Hunter, Okla., died Feb. 19, 2001, at Good Samaritan Village in Winfield.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Hunter First Baptist Church. Burial will be in White Cemetery in Hunter.

Friends may call at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday.

A memorial has been established with the Baptist Missionary Society.

Young was born Oct. 19, 1912, in Hunter, to Edith Etelka (Donaldson) and Lucien G. Young. She was raised in the Hunter area and graduated from Hunter High School in 1930.

Young worked for the local telephone company, then for the United States Postal Service as a clerk in the Hunter post office for 30 years.

Young was a member of the Hunter First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and participated in various singing groups.

Survivors include a brother, Glenn M. Young, Hunter, and a sister, Lataine York, Winfield.

Coleitto Taylor

Services for Coleitto Thelma Taylor were held at 2 p.m. Feb. 20, 2001, in Colonial Chapel of Miles Funeral Service. The Rev. Rick Thornton officiated. Burial was in Memorial Lawn Cemetery near Arkansas City.

Keith Anglemyer was the organist, and Kathy Waite sang "In the Garden" and "Just a Closer Walk With Thee."

Honorary casket bearer was Glen Taylor. Casket bearers were Jeff and Nathan Grieve, Steve Peresko, Garren Taylor and Clark and Kyle Wallace.

Memorials have been established with the American Arthritis Association and the First United Methodist Church.

William Black

William J. Black, 89, of 815 Loomis, Winfield, died Feb. 19, 2001, at his home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. Masonic rites will be performed. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with Hospice Inc. and the First United Methodist Church.

Black was born Feb. 3, 1912, in Waynesville, Mo., to Lewis V. and Clara (Pipkin) Black. He was raised and educated in Missouri and moved to Winfield in 1935.

On Oct. 3, 1935, he married Helen Wenrich. She died Sept. 17, 2000.

Black worked for Van's Poultry and operated the Skelly Service Station at 13th and Main before working for Cessna.

He was a 55-year member and past master of the Ancient Free & Accepted Masons and a member of the Wichita Consistory and the First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his daughter, Jean Martin, Denver, Iowa; a sister, Sofia Duncan, Winfield; and two grandchildren.

Steven Cain

WICHITA - Steven L. Cain, 50, of Wichita, formerly of Winfield, died Feb. 19, 2001, in Denton, Texas, while on a golfing trip.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Resthaven Mortuary, 11800 West U.S. 54.

A memorial has been established with the Alzheimer's Association.

Cain was born in southern California and moved to Winfield while in his teens. He attended Winfield High School where he met his wife, the former Peggy Goggans.

In 1974 he graduated from Wichita State University with a degree in accounting.

Cain started working at Twin Lakes National Bank 23 years ago and took over as president in 1990. He was interested in computers and was working on the bank's first Web site when he died.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Cain, and two sons, Chris Cain and Curtis Cain, all of Wichita; his parents, Fred and Mary Seward, and two brothers, Mike Cain and Randy Seward, all of Eagle Rock, Mo.; two sisters, Lisa Liggett, Eureka Springs, Ark., and Dianna Seward, Cassville, Mo.; and one grandchild.

Carl Cowen

CALDWELL - Services for Carl Day Cowen were held at 11 a.m. Feb. 21, 2001, in Cesko Czech Cemetery at Caldwell. The Rev. Bob Smith officiated.

A memorial has been established with Cedar Vale Community Hospital.

Wheeler Funeral Home of Cedar Vale was in charge of arrangements.

Nathaniel Bierig-Meece

Nathaniel Alexander Bierig-Meece, four-month-old son of Ambur Jeanine Bierig of Winfield and Fredrick Alexander Meece of Derby, died Feb. 21, 2001, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Hawks Funeral Home in Arkansas City. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to noon Monday.

A memorial has been established with the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Wesley Medical Center. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Nathaniel was born Oct. 16, 2000, in Winfield.

Survivors in addition to his parents include a sister, Belinda Bierig, Shreveport, La.; his grandparents, Wanda and William Erb, Arkansas City, and Fred and Noemi Meece, Derby; and a great-grandmother, Florence Erb, and a great-great-grandmother, Edna Hamm, both of Arkansas City.

Annie Joy

SAN ANTONIO - Annie Catherine Elder Larson Joy, 87, of San Antonio, formerly of Udall, died Feb. 17, 2001, in San Antonio.

Services have been held.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Larson was born Nov. 4, 1913, in Fayetteville, Ark., to Sadie and Ralph Elder.

She lived near Udall and taught school for 30 years, 25 of them in Douglass and Udall elementary schools and six years in Texas schools.

Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Young, San Antonio, and Gay Armstrong, La Mesa, Calif.; two sons, Kenneth Joy, Wichita, and George Joy Jr., Boerne, Texas; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
